In this paper, we give the construction of random measures concentrated on random Markov-self-similar fractals and prove that under quite weak conditions random Markov-self-similar measures exist and satisfy certain self-similarity property.

Abstract:We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $\Phi$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $\Phi(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

Abstract:It is well-known that for a Brownian motion, if we change the medium to be inhomogeneous by a measure μ, then the new motion (time changed process) will diffuse according to a different metric D(·, ·). In [27], Kigami initiated a general scheme to construct such metrics through some self-similar weight functions g on the symbolic space. In this paper we give an in-depth study of this construction on the nested fractals and the generalized Sierpinski carpets; we assume further that the weight functions g := ga is generated by the “symmetric” weights a. LetM be the set of a such that Dga defines a metric, and let S be the boundary ofM. We provide a recursive weight transfer construction to obtain the M on the nested fractals, and illustrate the construction by the Lindstrøm snowflake; for the Sierpinski carpet we use a symmetric argument directly to obtain theM. Our main result is to characterize the metrics from ga, a ∈ S satisfy the metric chain condition (MCC), and are equivalent to the geodesic metrics. The MCC is used for the lower estimate of the sub-Gaussian heat kernel. This together with the upper estimate in [27] allows us to have a concrete class of metrics for time change, and for the two sided sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimate.

In order to provide concrete models to Kigami’s theoretical construction, in this paper, we give a thorough study of his metric on two classes of fractals of primary importance: the nested fractals and the generalized Sierpinski carpets; we assume further that the weight functions g ≔ g a are generated by “symmetric” weights a . Let M be the domain of a such that D ga defines a metric, and let S be the boundary of M . One of our main results is that the metrics from g a satisfy the metric chain condition if and only if a ∈ S. To determine M and S , we provide a recursive weight transfer construction on the nested fractals, and a basic symmetric argument on the Sierpinski carpet. As an application, we use the metric chain condition to obtain the lower estimate of the sub-Gaussian heat kernel. This together with the upper estimate obtained by Kigami allows us to have a concrete class of metrics for the time change, and the two-sided sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimate on the fundamental fractals.
Geometric and Combinatorial Properties of Self-similar Multifractal Measures

Abstract:For any self-similar measure $\mu$ in $\mathbb{R}$, we show that the distribution of $\mu$ is controlled by products of non-negative matrices governed by a finite or countable graph depending only on the IFS. This generalizes the net interval construction of Feng from the equicontractive finite type case. When the measure satisfies the weak separation condition, we prove that this directed graph has a unique attractor. This allows us to verify the multifractal formalism for restrictions of $\mu$ to certain compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}$, determined by the directed graph. When the measure satisfies the generalized finite type condition with respect to an open interval, the directed graph is finite and we prove that if the multifractal formalism fails at some $q\in\mathbb{R}$, there must be a cycle with no vertices in the attractor. As a direct application, we verify the complete multifractal formalism for an uncountable family of IFSs with exact overlaps and without logarithmically commensurable contraction ratios.

On Constructions of Fractal Spaces Using Replacement and the Combinatorial Loewner Property

Abstract:The combinatorial Loewner property was introduced by Bourdon and Kleiner as a quasisymmetrically invariant substitute for the Loewner property for general fractals and boundaries of hyperbolic groups. While the Loewner property is somewhat restrictive, the combinatorial Loewner property is very generic -- Bourdon and Kleiner showed that many familiar fractals and group boundaries satisfy it. If $X$ is quasisymmetric to a Loewner space, it has the combinatorial Loewner property. Kleiner conjectured in 2006 that the converse to this holds for self-similar fractals -- the hope being that this would lead to the existence of many exotic Loewner spaces. We disprove this conjecture and give the first examples of spaces which are self-similar, combinatorially Loewner and which are not quasisymmetric to Loewner spaces. In the process we introduce a self-similar replacement rule, called iterated graph systems (IGS), which is inspired by the work of Laakso. This produces a new rich class of fractal spaces, where closed form computations of potentials and their conformal dimensions are possible. These spaces exhibit a rich class of behaviors from analysis on fractals in regards to diffusions, Sobolev spaces, energy measures and conformal dimensions. These behaviors expand on the known examples of Cantor sets, gaskets, Vicsek sets, and the often too difficult carpet-like spaces. Especially the counterexamples to Kleiner's conjecture that arise from this construction are interesting, since they open up the possibility to study the new realm of combinatorially Loewner spaces that are not quasisymmetric to Loewner spaces.

Abstract:We study random recursive constructions in which the contracting vectors have different distributions at different stages. With such constructions, the one parameter family of martingales are introduced and the probabilistic behaviours of the limit random objects (not identically distributed) are discussed. Abstract:In many branches of engineering, Banach contraction mapping theorem is employed to establish the convergence of certain deterministic algorithms. Randomized versions of these algorithms have been developed that have proved useful in data-driven problems. In a class of randomized algorithms, in each iteration, the contraction map is approximated with an operator that uses independent and identically distributed samples of certain random variables. This leads to iterated random operators acting on an initial point in a complete metric space, and it generates a Markov chain. In this paper, we develop a new stochastic dominance based proof technique, called probabilistic contraction analysis, for establishing the convergence in probability of Markov chains generated by such iterated random operators in certain limiting regime. The methods developed in this paper provides a general framework for understanding convergence of a wide variety of Monte Carlo methods in which contractive property is present. We apply the convergence result to conclude the convergence of fitted value iteration and fitted relative value iteration in continuous state and continuous action Markov decision problems as representative applications of the general framework developed here.

Abstract:Under the assumption that a self-similar measure defined by a one-dimensional iterated function system with overlaps satisfies a family of second-order self-similar identities introduced by Strichartz et al., we obtain a method to discretize the equation defining the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the corresponding fractal Laplacian. This allows us to obtain numerical solutions by using the finite element method. We also prove that the numerical eigenvalues and eigenfunctions converge to the true ones, and obtain estimates for the rates of convergence. We apply this scheme to the fractal Laplacians defined by the well-known infinite Bernoulli convolution associated with the golden ratio and the 3-fold convolution of the Cantor measure. The iterated function systems defining these measures do not satisfy the open set condition or the post-critically finite condition; we use second-order self-similar identities to analyze the measures.

Abstract:We consider several distances between two sets of points, which are modifications of the Hausdorff metric, and apply them to describe some fractals such as $\delta$-quasi-self-similar sets, and some other geometric notions in Euclidean space, such as tilings with quasi-prototiles and patterns with quasi-motifs. For the $\delta$-quasi-self-similar sets satisfying the open set condition we obtain the same result as a classical theorem due to P. A. P. Moran. In this paper we try to gaze on fractals in an aspect of their "form" and suggest a few of related questions. Finally, we attempt to inquire an issue -- what nature and behavior do non-crystalline solids that approximate to crystals show?

Abstract:The topological and metrical equivalence of fractals is an important topic in analysis. In this paper, we use a class of finite state automata, called $\Sigma$-automaton, to construct psuedo-metric spaces, and then apply them to the study of classification of self-similar sets. We first introduce a notion of topology automaton of a fractal gasket, which is a simplified version of neighbor automaton; we show that a fractal gasket is homeomorphic to the psuedo-metric space induced by the topology automaton. Then we construct a universal map to show that psuedo-metric spaces induced by different automata can be bi-Lipschitz equivalent. As an application, we obtain a rather general sufficient condition for two fractal gaskets to be homeomorphic or Lipschitz equivalent.

Abstract:Any Borel probability measure supported on a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure on the real line possesses a discrete inverse measure. We study the validity of the multifractal formalism for the inverse measures of random weak Gibbs measures supported on the attractor associated with some $C^1$ random dynamics encoded by a random subshift of finite type, and expanding in the mean. The study requires, in particular, to develop in this context of random dynamics a suitable extension of the results known for heterogeneous ubiquity associated with deterministic Gibbs measures.

Abstract:In this work, we define the notion of unimodular random measured metric spaces as a common generalization of various other notions. This includes the discrete cases like unimodular graphs and stationary point processes, as well as the non-discrete cases like stationary random measures and the continuum metric spaces arising as scaling limits of graphs. We provide various examples and prove many general results; e.g., on weak limits, re-rooting invariance, random walks, ergodic decomposition, amenability and balancing transport kernels. In addition, we generalize the Palm theory to point processes and random measures on a given unimodular space. This is useful for Palm calculations and also for reducing some problems to the discrete cases.

Abstract:This paper is concerned mainly with the macroscopic fractal behavior of various random sets that arise in modern and classical probability theory. Among other things, it is shown here that the macroscopic behavior of Boolean coverage processes is analogous to the microscopic structure of the Mandelbrot fractal percolation. Other, more technically challenging, results of this paper include: (i)The computation of the macroscopic Minkowski dimension of the graph of a large family of Levy processes; and(ii)The determination of the macroscopic monofractality of the extreme values of symmetric stable processes.

Abstract:This is a survey on the sample path properties of Markov processes, especially fractal properties of the random sets and measures determined by their sample paths. The class of Markov processes considered in this paper include Levy processes in R-d, diffusions on fractals and on Rd, Feller processes determined by pseudo-differential operators and so on. We summarize recent results for Levy processes such as the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of their ranges, level sets, and multiple points; regularity properties of local times and self-intersection local times; multifractal analysis of the occupation measures and sample paths. Our emphasis is on general Markovian techniques that are applicable to other Markov processes.
