Abstract:We are reporting, for the first time in the literature, theoretical Kerr spectra of Co|Pt multilayer systems as obtained on a first principles basis including multiple reflections and interferences from all the boundaries in-between the layers.

Abstract:In this paper calculated magneto-optical Kerr rotation spectra of Co/Pd, Co/Pt, and Co/Cu multilayers are presented. For Co/Pd and Co/Pt multilayers with a top Co layer the size of Kerr rotation \theta(K)\ increases with increasing modulation wavelength. For Co/Cu multilayers with a top Co layer \theta(K)\ increases with modulation wavelength increasing to 40 nm and then decreases with the modulation wavelength further increasing to 60 nm. For all these multilayers with a top non-magnetic layer \theta(K)\ decreases with increasing modulation wavelength. The optical constant effect of the non-magnetic sublayer is discussed.

Abstract:The effect of Cu doping in Pt spacer layers on the magneto-optical properties of sputtered Pt/Co multilayers has been investigated. It was found that the polar Kerr rotation theta(k), ellipticity epsilon(k), refractive index n and absorptive index k show an oscillation behavior as a function of the Cu content x, reflective index R keeps almost constant with the decreasing wavelength lambda, three theta(k), peaks appear at x = 0.03, 0.12, 0.25, respectively. Values of conductivity tensor sigma(1xx), sigma(2xx), sigma(1xy) and sigma(2xy) in the PtCu layers have been derived from experimental theta(k), epsilon(k), n, and k values at wavelength 770 nm. The oscillation of the polar Kerr rotation theta(k) may be resulted from spin polarized quantum size effects in the PtCu layers.

Abstract:The effects of doping Ni into the Pt spacer layer on the polar Kerr rotation θk and perpendicular anisotropy Ku of the sputtered Pt/Co multilayers have been investigated. A similar tendency of the variations of Ku and θk with the doping concentration of Ni specifies that they arise from the same source, the spin-orbit coupling. An enhanced magneto-optical effect appears in Pt1−xNix/Co multilayers at x=0.08 and can be attributed to variation of the off-diagonal elements of the conductivity tensor.

Abstract:The effect of Cu doped into Pt spacer layers on magneto-optical properties for sputtered Pt/Co multilayers has been investigated. The polar Kerr rotation θk oscillates with the content of Cu in Pt spacer layers, and an obvious enhancement of θk at the first and second peaks on its oscillation curve can be seen. The numerical calculation indicates that the components of conductivity tensor in PtCu layers make a simultaneous oscillation with the polar Kerr rotation. These behaviors may result from the spin polarization in PtCu layers.

Abstract:Pt1-xMnx/Co multilayers were prepared by magnetron sputtering. The crystal structure was analyzed by large and small angle X-ray diffraction. The relationship between structure and magnetooptical properties of PtMn/Co multilayers was studied. By measurement and analysis, the Kerr spectrum, Kerr ellipticity spectrum and Kerr loop show the Changing rules with the increase of doped Mn concentration. The physical mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:The results of theoretical investigation of magnetooptical properties of CoPt-based nanostructures are presented. Within the effective medium method, namely, the symmetrized Maxwell Garnett approximation, spectral dependences of the transverse effect are calculated for ferromagnetic granules with allowance for the size effect. The simulation showed good agreement of the experimental and theoretical data in the visible region of the spectrum.

Abstract:The polar Kerr rotation, Kerr ellipticity and optical constant n and k change regularly with the increase of Mn doping in Pt layer of Pt/Co multilayers. Through calculation and analyses, in heavy Mn doping the change of the Kerr rotation is due to the off-diagonal elements of dielectric tensor. However, in light Mn doping the change of Kerr rotation results from the change in the magneto-optical and optical constants. The enhanced magneto-optical Kerr rotation is due to the enhancement of Pt spin-orbit coupling. The variation of Pt spin-polarization results in the change of diagonal and off-diagonal elements of dielectric tensor.

Abstract:A series of Co/Pt974Mn26(xPtMn nm)modulated multilayers with the thickness of PtMn layer x ranging from 096 to 168nm have been prepared by a magnetron sputtering system on 40nm thick PtMn buffer.With combined small-and large-angle x-ray analyses,the layered and crystal structure of the samples were investigated.Magnetic hysteresis loops and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy(PMA) were obtained by means of altermating-gradient magnetometer(AGM) and magnetic torque methods.Saturation magnetization,PMA and the Kerr spectrum of the samples were also investigated.Through analyses,we obtained the variation of Kerr rotation with the increase of PtMn thickness,which was ascribed to the reduction of the polarization of Pt atom and the interlayer alloys.

Abstract:In this paper we present the calculated magneto-optical Kerr rotation spectra of Fe/Pd and Co/Pd multilayers based on two different assumptions. Firstly the spin-polarization of the Pd layers and its additional magneto-optical Kerr effect in Fe/Pd and Co/Pd multilayers are assumed negligibly small. Secondly the Pd layer is assumed to be spin-polarized. The calculated spectra with the latter assumption agree with the measured spectra by modifying the parameters. The Pd layers are suggested to induce an additional magneto-optical Kerr effect and thus enhance magneto-optical Kerr effect in these multilayers.
Surface Effects and Structural Dependence of Magneto-Optical Spectra: Ultrathin Co Films Andcoptnalloys and Multilayers

Abstract:First-principles calculations of the optical conductivities and magneto-optical Kerr effects for bulk and thin films of Co and for CoPtn alloys (n = 1 and 3) and multilayer (n = 3) are carried out using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave method with the local spin density approximation. For fee bulk Co, we obtain a negligible dependence of the polar Kerr rotation on the direction of magnetization. By contrast, the calculated Kerr spectra of CoPtn are found to be very sensitive to structural changes. For Co(001) and Co(111) ultrathin films, the surface effects cause a redshift for the high-energy peaks in the magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) spectra, mainly due to band narrowing. Except for the free standing Co(001) monolayer, the profile of their MOKE spectra, however, is very close to that of bulb Co. [S0163-1829(99)04313-1].

Abstract:We have studied the magneto-optical Kerr effect and optical reflectance of perpendicular magnetized Co/Pt films on self-assembly two-dimensional polystyrene spheres. It is shown that the magneto-optical and the reflectance spectra are correlated to each other. Calculations have shown that the magneto-optical Kerr rotation and the Kerr ellipticity spectra are governed by the resonant coupling of light to the excitations of surface plasmon polaritons and modified by the sphere diameters. These effects lead to the possibility of developing new magnetoplasmonic nanosensors.

Abstract:A series of rf sputtered [NiCo(1.3 nm)/Cu(tCu)]25 multilayers with tCu=0.5–4.0 nm was prepared and the behavior of interlayer coupling, magnetoresistance, and magneto-optical Kerr effect was studied. A concurrent oscillation in the magnitude of the magnetoresistance and magneto-optical Kerr effect in visible wavelength range as a function of Cu layer thickness was observed. The changes of both the optical and magneto-optical transition due to interlayer coupling may be responsible for the magneto-optical activities.

Abstract:A series of RF sputtered NiCo/Cu multilayers was prepared and the correlation of the interlayer coupling and magnetooptical Kerr effect (MOKE) was studied. A concurrent oscillation of the magnetoresistance ratio and the maximum Kerr rotation (θ2k+η2k)1/2 with Cu layer thickness was observed. The oscillation of the Kerr rotation is attributed to changes in the band structure related to the antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling, leading to changes in the optical and magnetooptical transitions.

Abstract:The influence of interfaces on the magneto-optical Kerr effect in the Co/Ni multilayer has been investigated. It was found that the magnetic-optical Kerr rotation varies with the numbers of interfaces (x) in the Co/Ni multilayer, which indicated that the interface states play an important role in the Kerr effect. Moreover, ellipticity and optical constants n and k are also found to vary with x. Some possible mechanisms have been discussed.

Abstract:In this article we presented a scalar-relativistic + spin–orbit coupling local-density electronic calculation on magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) for Heusler alloys Co2TiSn and Co2ZrSn. Though both alloys have very similar electronic band structures, the MOKE spectra exhibit quite different features. Kerr rotation spectrum of Co2TiSn showed two strong peaks near 3.8 and 6.7eV while Co2ZrSn had four smaller Kerr rotations in the Kerr spectra. The calculated maximum Kerr angles of Co2TiSn were estimated about -0.94∘ and -0.59∘ with Lotentzian δ=0.1 and 0.2eV, respectively. It is concluded that the contribution from Ti (or Zr) site to the optical conductivity is quite crucial in Heusler alloys.

Abstract:A series of Co/Cr/Pd modulated multilayers with Cr layer thickness X-Cr ranging from 0 to 1.13 nm have been prepared by magnetron sputtering system on 40 nm thick Pd buffer. With combimed small- and large-angle X-ray analyses, the layered and crystal structure of the samples were investigated. The magnetic hysteresis loops and domain structure were perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and the coercivity of the multilayers decrease with the increase of Cr thickness,which was ascribed to the reduction of the polarization of Pd atoms and the interlayer roughness, respectively. The Kerr rotation and ellipticity of the multilayers were also studied. The decrease of Kerr rotation with the increase of the Cr thickness was assumed to be due to the decrease of the polarization of Pd atoms.

Abstract:For sputtered Co57Mn43/Si film samples with different ferromagnetic thickness, the spectra of the complex magneto-optical polar Kerr rotation and optical constants were ex-situ measured. For 5 nm-thick Co57Mn43 film, the Kerr rotation around 4.3 eV was enhanced by a factor of about 10 times with lower loss of the signal intensity as compared to the thick film. Numerical calculations show that the enhancement effect is attributed to an interplay between optical properties of Co57Mn43 and substrate Si that has a strong interband transition (E2) near 4.3 eV.

Abstract:The magneto-optic properties of sputtered multilayers Fe-Si (1.9 nm)/Cr and Co-Nb/Pd (1.4 nm) are studied by magneto-optical spectrometer and ellipsometer. For multilayers Co-Nb/Pd(1.4 nm) both calculated and measured polar Kerr rotation theta(K) increase with increasing magnetic layer thickness d(m). For small d(m) there are great differences between the measured and calculated theta(K) spectra especially in the short-wavelength range. It is suggested that the Pd atoms are spin-polarized and have an additional magneto-optic effect. For multilayers Fe-Si/Cr theta(K) has minima at Cr layer thicknesses of 1.0 and 1.9 nm. With further increasing Cr layer thickness, theta(K) decreases to zero, which can be explained in terms of the conventional optical constant effect.

Abstract:In this paper the results of ferromagnetic resonance study of sputtered Co/Pt multilayers, with a fixed Co layer thickness of 15 Å, are presented. For these multilayers with small Pt layer thickness, in addition to a uniform resonance mode, a spin wave resonance mode is found to exist, which confirms the existence of an interlayer coupling between the neighboring Co layers. Simultaneously, the effective magnetization 4πMeff and the resonance linewidth ΔH are found to change correlatively with varying Pt layer thickness. This phenomenon can be explained as a result of an interplay between the interlayer coupling and the low-dimensional effect.

Abstract:The Kerr spectra as function of wavelength, incident angle and layer number are calculated with 4 × 4matrix method. It is found that the calculated results are in good agreement with experimental ones for [Co(0.3 nm)/Pt (0.4 nm)] ×43/glass (1.21 mm) and [Co (0.4 nm)/Pt (1.1 nm)] × 53/glass (1 mm). In addition,for [Co (0.3 nm)/Pt (0.4 nm)]×43/glass (1.21 mm), it shows a maximum Kerr rotation at N = 10. For[Co (0.4 nm)/Pt (1.1 nm)]×53/glass (1 mm), the calculated Kerr rotation as a function of incident anglereveals maximum when the incident angle is 89°.
