Abstract:Buoyed by the excitement around secure decentralized applications, the last few decades have seen numerous constructions of distributed randomness beacons (DRB) along with use cases; however, a secure DRB (in many variations) remains an open problem. We further note that it is natural to want some kind of reward for participants who spend time and energy evaluating the randomness beacon value -- this is already common in distributed protocols. In this work, we present RandGener, a novel $n$-party commit-reveal-recover (or collaborative) DRB protocol with a novel reward and penalty mechanism along with a set of realistic guarantees. We design our protocol using trapdoor watermarkable verifiable delay functions in the RSA group setting (without requiring a trusted dealer or distributed key generation).

Cooperative Secure Transmission by Exploiting Social Ties in Random Networks

Abstract:Social awareness and social ties are becoming increasingly popular with emerging mobile and handheld devices. Social trust degree describing the strength of the social ties has drawn lots of research interests in many fields in wireless communications, such as resource sharing, cooperative communication and so on. In this paper, we propose a hybrid cooperative beamforming and jamming scheme to secure communication based on the social trust degree under a stochastic geometry framework. The friendly nodes are categorized into relays and jammers according to their locations and social trust degrees with the source node. We aim to analyze the involved connection outage probability (COP) and secrecy outage probability (SOP) of the performance in the networks. To achieve this target, we propose a double Gamma ratio (DGR) approach through Gamma approximation. Based on this, the COP and SOP are tractably obtained in closed-form. We further consider the SOP in the presence of Poisson Point Process (PPP) distributed eavesdroppers and derive an upper bound. The simulation results verify our theoretical findings, and validate that the social trust degree has dramatic influences on the security performance in the networks.

Traceable random numbers from a nonlocal quantum advantage

Abstract:The unpredictability of random numbers is fundamental to both digital security and applications that fairly distribute resources. However, existing random number generators have limitations-the generation processes cannot be fully traced, audited, and certified to be unpredictable. The algorithmic steps used in pseudorandom number generators are auditable, but they cannot guarantee that their outputs were a priori unpredictable given knowledge of the initial seed. Device-independent quantum random number generators can ensure that the source of randomness was unknown beforehand, but the steps used to extract the randomness are vulnerable to tampering. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate a fully traceable random number generation protocol based on device-independent techniques. Our protocol extracts randomness from unpredictable non-local quantum correlations, and uses distributed intertwined hash chains to cryptographically trace and verify the extraction process. This protocol is at the heart of a public traceable and certifiable quantum randomness beacon that we have launched. Over the first 40 days of operation, we completed the protocol 7434 out of 7454 attempts -- a success rate of 99.7%. Each time the protocol succeeded, the beacon emitted a pulse of 512 bits of traceable randomness. The bits are certified to be uniform with error times actual success probability bounded by $2^{-64}$. The generation of certifiable and traceable randomness represents one of the first public services that operates with an entanglement-derived advantage over comparable classical approaches.

Robust Randomness Amplifiers: Upper and Lower Bounds

Abstract:A recent sequence of works, initially motivated by the study of the nonlocal properties of entanglement, demonstrate that a source of information-theoretically certified randomness can be constructed based only on two simple assumptions: the prior existence of a short random seed and the ability to ensure that two black-box devices do not communicate (i.e. are non-signaling). We call protocols achieving such certified amplification of a short random seed randomness amplifiers. We introduce a simple framework in which we initiate the systematic study of the possibilities and limitations of randomness amplifiers. Our main results include a new, improved analysis of a robust randomness amplifier with exponential expansion, as well as the first upper bounds on the maximum expansion achievable by a broad class of randomness amplifiers. In particular, we show that non-adaptive randomness amplifiers that are robust to noise cannot achieve more than doubly exponential expansion. Finally, we show that a wide class of protocols based on the use of the CHSH game can only lead to (singly) exponential expansion if adversarial devices are allowed the full power of non-signaling strategies. Our upper bound results apply to all known non-adaptive randomness amplifier constructions to date.

Power Beacon Assisted Wiretap Channels with Jamming

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel power beacon-assisted wiretap channel, where an energy constrained source, powered by a dedicated power beacon, aims to establish secure communications with a legitimate user in the presence of an eavesdropper. The power beacon and the source are assumed to have multiple antennas, while the legitimate user and the eavesdropper are equipped with a single antenna each. Considering a time-switching protocol, the power beacon first charges the source through wireless power transfer, and then acts as a friendly jammer to assist the source for secure communication. Depending on the available channel state information (CSI) at the power beacon, we propose several different jamming schemes for secrecy performance enhancement. Closed-form expressions are derived for the achievable secrecy outage probability of the proposed schemes. In addition, simple and accurate approximations are obtained at the high signal-to-noise ratio regime. The outcomes suggest that jamming is an effective approach to improve the secrecy performance: with full CSI available at the power beacon, employing simple zero-forcing scheme attains significant secrecy diversity gain and without the CSI of the eavesdropper link, jamming provides only some array gain. Moreover, we show that the proposed limited feedback-based random beamforming is an effective approach, which may outperform the antenna selection scheme. Furthermore, numerical results reveal that there exists a unique time switching ratio that maximizes the effective secrecy throughput.
A Data Sharing Model for Blockchain Trusted Sensor Leveraging Mimic Hash Mechanism

Abstract:Blockchain, as a distributed trust database, has been widely applied in the field of trustworthy sharing of Internet of Things (IoT) sensor data. A single hash mechanism has achieved, to some extent, the trustworthy on-chain storage of blockchain sensor data, that is, the consistency of data on and off the chain. However, it still faces potential security risks such as collision attacks, short password attacks, and rainbow table attacks. To address this issue, this paper proposes a resiliently secure blockchain sensor data trustworthy sharing model based on a mimic hash mechanism. Specifically, in response to the security risks that may arise from the single hash mechanism, this study innovatively introduces a mimic hash mechanism and proposes two methods for constructing mimic hashes based on Verifiable Random Function (VRF) and Cyber Mimic Defense (CMD) in dedicated Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and open public networks, respectively. Theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that this model effectively solves the problem of trustworthy on-chain storage of sensor data in edge computing environments, enhancing the trustworthiness and security of the data on the chain.
Untappable key distribution system: a one-time-pad booster

Abstract:One-time-pad (OTP) encryption simply cannot be cracked, even by a quantum computer. The need of sharing in a secure way supplies of symmetric random keys turned the method almost obsolete as a standing-alone method for fast and large volume telecommunication. Basically, this secure sharing of keys and their renewal, once exhausted, had to be done through couriers, in a slow and costly process. This paper presents a solution for this problem providing a fast and unlimited renewal of secure keys: An untappable key distribution system is presented and detailed. This fast key distribution system utilizes two layers of confidentially protection: 1) Physical noise intrinsic to the optical channel that turn the coded signals into stealth signals and 2) Privacy amplification using a bit pool of refreshed entropy run after run, to eliminate any residual information. The resulting level of security is rigorously calculated and demonstrates that the level of information an eavesdropper could obtain is completely negligible. The random bit sequences, fast and securely distributed, can be used to encrypt text, data or voice.

A proposal for founding mistrustful quantum cryptography on coin tossing

Abstract:A significant branch of classical cryptography deals with the problems which arise when mistrustful parties need to generate, process or exchange information. As Kilian showed a while ago, mistrustful classical cryptography can be founded on a single protocol, oblivious transfer, from which general secure multi-party computations can be built. The scope of mistrustful quantum cryptography is limited by no-go theorems, which rule out, inter alia, unconditionally secure quantum protocols for oblivious transfer or general secure two-party computations. These theorems apply even to protocols which take relativistic signalling constraints into account. The best that can be hoped for, in general, are quantum protocols computationally secure against quantum attack. I describe here a method for building a classically certified bit commitment, and hence every other mistrustful cryptographic task, from a secure coin tossing protocol. No security proof is attempted, but I sketch reasons why these protocols might resist quantum computational attack.

Abstract:Transmitter-side channel state information (CSI) of the legitimate destination plays a critical role in physical layer secure transmissions. However, channel training procedure is vulnerable to the pilot spoofing attack (PSA) or pilot jamming attack (PJA) by an active eavesdropper (Eve), which inevitably results in severe private information leakage. In this paper, we propose a random channel training (RCT) based secure downlink transmission framework for a time division duplex (TDD) multiple antennas base station (BS). In the proposed RCT scheme, multiple orthogonal pilot sequences (PSs) are simultaneously allocated to the legitimate user (LU), and the LU randomly selects one PS from the assigned PS set to transmit. Under either the PSA or PJA, we provide the detailed steps for the BS to identify the PS transmitted by the LU, and to simultaneously estimate channels of the LU and Eve. The probability that the BS makes an incorrect decision on the PS of the LU is analytically investigated. Finally, closed-form secure beamforming (SB) vectors are designed and optimized to enhance the secrecy rates during the downlink transmissions. Numerical results show that the secrecy performance is greatly improved compared to the conventional channel training scheme wherein only one PS is assigned to the LU.

Correlated Randomness Teleportation via Semi-trusted Hardware-Enabling Silent Multi-party Computation

Abstract:With the advancement of the trusted execution environment (TEE) technologies, hardware-supported secure computing becomes increasingly popular due to its efficiency. During the protocol execution, typically, the players need to contact a third-party server for remote attestation, ensuring the validity of the involved trusted hardware component, such as Intel SGX, as well as the integrity of the computation result. When the hardware manufacturer is not fully trusted, sensitive information may be leaked to the third-party server through backdoors, steganography, and kleptography, etc. In this work, we introduce a new security notion called semi-trusted hardware model, where the adversary is allowed to passively or maliciously corrupt the hardware. Therefore, she can learn the input of the hardware component and might also tamper its output. We then show how to utilize such semi-trusted hardwares for correlated randomness teleportation. When the semi-trusted hardware is instantiated by Intel SGX, to generate 10k random OT's, our protocol is 24X and 450X faster than the EMP-IKNP-ROT in the LAN and WAN setting, respectively. When SGX is used to teleport Garbled circuits, the resulting two-party computation protocol is 5.3-5.7X and 43-47X faster than the EMP-SH2PC in the LAN and WAN setting, respectively, for the AES-128, SHA-256, and SHA-512 evaluation. We also show how to achieve malicious security with little overhead.

Abstract:In a device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying cellular network, any user is a potential eavesdropper for the transmissions of others that occupy the same spectrum. The physical-layer security mechanism of theoretical secure capacity, which maximizes the rate of reliable communication from the source user to the legitimate receiver and ensure unauthorized users learn as little as information as possible, is typically employed to guarantee secure communications. As hand-held devices are carried by human beings, we may leverage their social trust to decrease the number of potential eavesdroppers. Aiming to establish a new paradigm for solving the challenging problem of security and efficiency tradeoff, we propose a social trust-aware D2D communication architecture that exploits the social-domain trust for securing the physical-domain communication. In order to understand the impact of social trust on the security of transmissions, we analyze the system ergodic rate of social trust aided communications via stochastic geometry, and our result based on a real data set shows that the proposed social trust aided D2D communication increases the system secrecy rate by about 63% compared with the scheme without considering social trust relation. Furthermore, in order to provide implementation mechanism, we utilize matching theory to implement efficient resource allocation among multiple users. Numerical results show that our proposed mechanism increases the system secrecy rate by 28% with fast convergence over the social oblivious approach.

Abstract:As a key technology in cognitive radio, cooperative spectrum sensing has been paid more and more attention. In cooperative spectrum sensing, multi-user cooperative spectrum sensing can effectively alleviate the performance degradation caused by multipath effect and shadow fading, and improve the spectrum utilization. However, as there may be malicious users in the cooperative sensing users, sending forged false messages to the fusion center or neighbor nodes to mislead them to make wrong judgments, which will greatly reduce the spectrum utilization. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an intelligent anti spectrum sensing data falsification (SSDF) attack algorithm using trust-based non consensus message passing algorithm. In this scheme, only one perception is needed, and the historical propagation path of each message is taken as the basis to calculate the reputation of each cognitive user. Every time a node receives different messages from the same cognitive user, there must be malicious users in its propagation path. We reward the nodes that appear more times in different paths with reputation value, and punish the nodes that appear less. Finally, the real value of the tampered message is restored according to the calculated reputation value. The MATLAB results show that the proposed scheme has a high recovery rate for messages and can identify malicious users in the network at the same time.

Abstract:Cognitive radio (CR) is a promising technology that brings about remarkable improvement in spectrum utilization. To tackle the hidden terminal problem, cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) which benefits from the spatial diversity has been studied extensively. Since CSS is vulnerable to the attacks initiated by malicious secondary users (SUs), several secure CSS schemes based on Dempster-Shafer theory have been proposed. However, the existing works only utilize the current difference of SUs, such as the difference in SNR or similarity degree, to evaluate the trustworthiness of each SU. As the current difference is only one-sided and sometimes inaccurate, the statistical information contained in each SU's historical behavior should not be overlooked. In this article, we propose a robust CSS scheme based on Dempster-Shafer theory and trustworthiness degree calculation. It is carried out in four successive steps, which are basic probability assignment (BPA), trustworthiness degree calculation, selection and adjustment of BPA, and combination by Dempster-Shafer rule, respectively. Our proposed scheme evaluates the trustworthiness degree of SUs from both current difference aspect and historical behavior aspect and exploits Dempster-Shafer theory's potential to establish a 'soft update' approach for the reputation value maintenance. It can not only differentiate malicious SUs from honest ones based on their historical behaviors but also reserve the current difference for each SU to achieve a better real-time performance. Abundant simulation results have validated that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing ones under the impact of different attack patterns and different number of malicious SUs.

Abstract:Meeting the ever-increasing demands for trustworthy wireless communication is crucial in modern networks. In this work, we investigate physical layer security in a slotted ALOHA scheme with randomly distributed users. Specifically, we evaluate a system where users are randomly distributed in a ring around the base station (BS), while eavesdroppers are distributed in rings around them. We propose that legitimate users allocate a fraction of their transmit power to generate artificial noise (AN) to increase the probability of secure transmission. To evaluate the performance of the proposed trustworthy slotted ALOHA scheme, we introduce a new metric called secrecy outage rate and derive a closed-form expression for this metric, which involves the outage probability at both the BS and the eavesdropper. Simulation results validate the theoretical analysis and demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme over a benchmark scheme without AN, as well as the usefulness of the proposed metric.
A Game-theoretic Approach for Provably-Uniform Random Number Generation in Decentralized Networks

Abstract:Many protocols in distributed computing rely on a source of randomness, usually called a random beacon, both for their applicability and security. This is especially true for proof-of-stake blockchain protocols in which the next miner or set of miners have to be chosen randomly and each party's likelihood to be selected is in proportion to their stake in the cryptocurrency. Current random beacons used in proof-of-stake protocols, such as Ouroboros and Algorand, have two fundamental limitations: Either (i)~they rely on pseudorandomness, e.g.~assuming that the output of a hash function is uniform, which is a widely-used but unproven assumption, or (ii)~they generate their randomness using a distributed protocol in which several participants are required to submit random numbers which are then used in the generation of a final random result. However, in this case, there is no guarantee that the numbers provided by the parties are uniformly random and there is no incentive for the parties to honestly generate uniform randomness. Most random beacons have both limitations. In this thesis, we provide a protocol for distributed generation of randomness. Our protocol does not rely on pseudorandomness at all. Similar to some of the previous approaches, it uses random inputs by different participants to generate a final random result. However, the crucial difference is that we provide a game-theoretic guarantee showing that it is in everyone's best interest to submit uniform random numbers. Hence, our approach is the first to incentivize honest behavior instead of just assuming it. Moreover, the approach is trustless and generates unbiased random numbers. It is also tamper-proof and no party can change the output or affect its distribution. Finally, it is designed with modularity in mind and can be easily plugged into existing distributed protocols such as proof-of-stake blockchains.

Can a Multi-Hop Link Relying on Untrusted Amplify-and-Forward Relays Render Security?

Abstract:Cooperative relaying is utilized as an efficient method for data communication in wireless sensor networks and the Internet of Things (IoT). However, sometimes due to the necessity of multi-hop relaying in such communication networks, it is challenging to guarantee the secrecy of cooperative transmissions when the relays may themselves be eavesdroppers, i.e., we may face with the untrusted relaying scenario where the relays are both necessary helpers and potential adversary. To obviate this issue, a new cooperative jamming scheme is proposed in this paper, in which the data can be confidentially communicated from the source to the destination through multiple untrusted relays. In our proposed secure transmission scheme, all the legitimate nodes contribute to providing secure communication by intelligently injecting artificial noises to the network in different communication phases. For the sake of analysis, we consider a multi-hop untrusted relaying network with two successive intermediate nodes, i.e, a three-hop communications network. Given this system model, a new closed-form expression is presented in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region for the Ergodic secrecy rate (ESR). Furthermore, we evaluate the high SNR slope and power offset of the ESR to gain an insightful comparison of the proposed secure transmission scheme and the state-of-arts. Our numerical results highlight that the proposed secure transmission scheme provides better secrecy rate performance compared with the two-hop untrusted relaying as well as the direct transmission schemes.

A New Scheme for Indirect Trust Calculation to Resist Bigmouth Attack in Wireless Ad Hoc Network

Abstract:With the introduction of trust mechanism into the wireless ad hoc network, security can be greatly improved, because trust information is shared among all nodes in the network. However, such a mechanism also has the potential vulnerability if the so-called 'big-mouth' nodes broadcast wrong trust information. Some measures have to be taken to filter the received trust information before it is fed to the trust aggregation system. In this paper, a new scheme is proposed to evaluate the confidence level of the broadcasted values and thus securely calculate the indirect trust. The basic assumption is that most nodes in the network are honest. Simulation results showed that the proposed scheme can effectively resist the bigmouth attack and the trust opinion can quickly converge to the correct value.

Abstract:Honest cooperation among individuals in a network can be achieved in different ways. In online networks with some kind of central authority, such as Ebay, Airbnb, etc. honesty is achieved through a reputation system, which is maintained and secured by the central authority. These systems usually rely on review mechanisms, through which agents can evaluate the trustworthiness of their interaction partners. These reviews are stored centrally and are tamper-proof. In decentralized peer-to-peer networks, enforcing cooperation turns out to be more difficult. One way of approaching this problem is by observing cooperative biological communities in nature. One finds that cooperation among biological organisms is achieved through a mechanism called indirect reciprocity. This mechanism for cooperation relies on some shared notion of trust. In this work we aim to facilitate communal cooperation in a peer-to-peer file sharing network called Tribler, by introducing a mechanism for evaluating the trustworthiness of agents. We determine a trust ranking of all nodes in the network based on the Monte Carlo algorithm estimating the values of Google's personalized PageRank vector. We go on to evaluate the algorithm's resistance to Sybil attacks, whereby our aim is for sybils to be assigned low trust scores.

Abstract:Various protocols exist by which a referee can be convinced that two observers share an entangled resource. Such protocols typically specify the types of communication allowed, and the degrees of trust required, between the referee and each observer. Here it is shown that the need for any degree of trust of the observers by the referee can be completely removed via the referee using classical and quantum communication channels appropriately. In particular, trust-free verification of Bell nonlocality, EPR-steering, and entanglement, respectively, requires two classical channels, one classical and one quantum channel, and two quantum channels. These channels correspond to suitable inputs of quantum randomness by the referee, which prevent the observers from mimicking entanglement using shared classical randomness. Our results generalize recent work by Buscemi [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 200401 (2012)], and offer a perspective on the operational significance of that work. They also offer the possibility of simpler experimental demonstrations of the basic idea of quantum-refereed nonlocality tests.

Abstract:We study the problem of an agent continuously faced with the decision of placing or not placing trust in an institution. The agent makes use of Bayesian learning in order to estimate the institution's true trustworthiness and makes the decision to place trust based on myopic rationality. Using elements from random walk theory, we explicitly derive the probability that such an agent ceases placing trust at some point in the relationship, as well as the expected time spent placing trust conditioned on their discontinuation thereof. We then continue by modelling two truster agents, each in their own relationship to the institution. We consider two natural models of communication between them. In the first (``observable rewards'') agents disclose their experiences with the institution with one another, while in the second (``observable actions'') agents merely witness the actions of their neighbour, i.e., placing or not placing trust. Under the same assumptions as in the single agent case, we describe the evolution of the beliefs of agents under these two different communication models. Both the probability of ceasing to place trust and the expected time in the system elude explicit expressions, despite there being only two agents. We therefore conduct a simulation study in order to compare the effect of the different kinds of communication on the trust dynamics. We find that a pair of agents in both communication models has a greater chance of learning the true trustworthiness of an institution than a single agent. Communication between agents promotes the formation of long term trust with a trustworthy institution as well as the timely exit from a trust relationship with an untrustworthy institution. Contrary to what one might expect, we find that having less information (observing each other's actions instead of experiences) can sometimes be beneficial to the agents.
