Abstract:There are many different algebraic, geometric and combinatorial objects that one can attach to a complex polynomial with distinct roots. In this article we introduce a new object that encodes many of the existing objects that have previously appeared in the literature. Concretely, for every complex polynomial $p$ with $d$ distinct roots and degree at least 2, we produce a canonical compact planar 2-complex that is a compact metric version of a tiled phase diagram. It has a locally CAT(0) metric that is locally Euclidean away from a finite set of interior points indexed by the critical points of $p$, and each of its 2-cells is a metric rectangle. From this planar rectangular 2-complex one can use metric graphs known as metric cacti and metric banyans to read off several pieces of combinatorial data: a chain in the partition lattice, a cyclic factorization of a d-cycle, a real noncrossing partition (also known as a primitive d-major), and the monodromy permutations for the polynomial. This article is the first in a series.

Abstract:In this work we provide a novel approach for computing the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a square matrix. We demonstrate that each coefficient can be efficiently represented by a set of circle graphs. Thus, one can employ a diagrammatic approach to determine the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial.

Abstract:To any combinatorial triangulation T of a square, there is an associated polynomial relation among the areas of the triangles of T . With the goal of understanding this polynomial, we consider polynomials obtained from by choosing l of its variables and specializing to these variables by zeroing out the remaining variables. We show that for fixed l , the set of integer polynomials that appear as irreducible factors of such specializations is finite. We compute this area encyclopedia for . We also show that in any dissection of a square into l triangles, the areas of the triangles must satisfy a polynomial in . Our results are obtained by studying the rational map that associates to each drawing of T the tuple of areas of the triangles in that drawing. By analyzing the ways of approaching the base locus, we derive restrictions on points of the closure of the image of this map.

Abstract:A $\mathbf{GL}$-variety is a (typically infinite dimensional) variety modeled on the polynomial representation theory of the general linear group. In previous work, we studied these varieties in characteristic 0. In this paper, we obtain results in positive characteristic: for example, we prove a version of Chevalley's theorem on constructible sets. We give an application of our theory to strength of polynomials.

Abstract:In this paper, we enumerate parallelogram polycubes according to several parameters. After establishing a relation between Multiple Zeta Function and the Dirichlet generating function of parallelogram polyominoes, we generalize it to the case of parallelogram polycubes. We also give an explicit formula and an ordinary generating function of parallelogram polycubes according to the width, length and depth, by characterizing its projections. Then, these results are generalized to polyhypercubes.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 947-964, March 2024. We show that the eigenpolytopes of graphs are universal in the sense that every polytope, up to affine equivalence, appears as the eigenpolytope of some positively weighted graph. We next extend the theory of graphical designs, which are quadrature rules for graphs, to positively weighted graphs. Through Gale duality for polytopes, we show a bijection between graphical designs and the faces of eigenpolytopes. This bijection proves the existence of graphical designs with positive quadrature weights and upper bounds the size of a minimal graphical design. Connecting this bijection with the universality of eigenpolytopes, we establish three complexity results: It is strongly NP-complete to determine if there is a graphical design smaller than the mentioned upper bound, it is NP-hard to find a smallest graphical design, and it is #P-complete to count the number of minimal graphical designs.

Abstract:A graph $X$ is said to be a pattern polynomial graph if its adjacency algebra is a coherent algebra. In this study we will find a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph to be a pattern polynomial graph. Some of the properties of the graphs which are polynomials in the pattern polynomial graph have been studied. We also identify known graph classes which are pattern polynomial graphs.

Abstract:On the generalized tangent bundle of a smooth manifold, we study skew-symmetric endomorphism satisfying an arbitrary polynomial equation with real constant coefficients. We study the compatibility of these structures with the de Rham operator and the Courant-Dorfman bracket. In particular we isolate several conditions that when restricted to the motivating example of generalized almost complex structure are equivalent to the notion of integrability.

Abstract:The A-polynomial encodes hyperbolic geometric information on knots and related manifolds. Historically, it has been difficult to compute, and particularly difficult to determine A-polynomials of infinite families of knots. Here, we compute A-polynomials by starting with a triangulation of a manifold, then using symplectic properties of the Neumann-Zagier matrix encoding the gluings to change the basis of the computation. The result is a simplification of the defining equations. We apply this method to families of manifolds obtained by Dehn filling, and show that the defining equations of their A-polynomials are Ptolemy equations which, up to signs, are equations between cluster variables in the cluster algebra of the cusp torus.

Abstract:We study the geometry of the image of the nonnegative orthant under the power-sum map and the elementary symmetric polynomials map. After analyzing the image in finitely many variables, we concentrate on the limit as the number of variables approaches infinity. We explain how the geometry of the limit plays a crucial role in undecidability results in nonnegativity of symmetric polynomials, deciding validity of trace inequalities in linear algebra, and extremal combinatorics - recently observed by Blekherman, Raymond, and F. Wei. We verify the experimental observation that the image has the combinatorial geometry of a cyclic polytope made by Melánová, Sturmfels, and Winter, and generalize results of Choi, Lam, and Reznick on nonnegative even symmetric polynomials. We also show that undecidability does not hold for the normalized power sum map.

Abstract:We classify recurrent configurations of the sandpile model on the complete bipartite graph K_{m,n} in which one designated vertex is a sink. We present a bijection from these recurrent configurations to decorated parallelogram polyominoes whose bounding box is a m*n rectangle. Several special types of recurrent configurations and their properties via this bijection are examined. For example, recurrent configurations whose sum of heights is minimal are shown to correspond to polyominoes of least area. Two other classes of recurrent configurations are shown to be related to bicomposition matrices, a matrix analogue of set partitions, and (2+2)-free partially ordered sets. A canonical toppling process for recurrent configurations gives rise to a path within the associated parallelogram polyominoes. This path bounces off the external edges of the polyomino, and is reminiscent of Haglund's well-known bounce statistic for Dyck paths. We define a collection of polynomials that we call q,t-Narayana polynomials, defined to be the generating function of the bistatistic (area,parabounce) on the set of parallelogram polyominoes, akin to the (area,hagbounce) bistatistic defined on Dyck paths in Haglund (2003). In doing so, we have extended a bistatistic of Egge, Haglund, Kremer and Killpatrick (2003) to the set of parallelogram polyominoes. This is one answer to their question concerning extensions to other combinatorial objects. We conjecture the q,t-Narayana polynomials to be symmetric and prove this conjecture for numerous special cases. We also show a relationship between Haglund's (area,hagbounce) statistic on Dyck paths, and our bistatistic (area,parabounce) on a sub-collection of those parallelogram polyominoes living in a (n+1)*n rectangle.

Differential algebra of polytopes and inversion formulas

Abstract:We use the differential algebra of simple polytopes to explain the remarkable relation of the combinatorics of the associahedra and permutohedra with the compositional and multiplicative inversion of formal power series. This approach allows to single out the associahedra and permutohedra among all graph-associahedra and emphasizes the significance of the differential equations for polytopes derived earlier by one of the authors. We discuss also the link with the geometry of Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces $\bar M_{0,n}$ and provide a new interpretation of the combinatorics of cyclohedra in relation with the classical Faà di Bruno's formula.

Generalized Voronoi Diagrams and Lie Sphere Geometry

Abstract:We use Lie sphere geometry to describe two large categories of generalized Voronoi diagrams that can be encoded in terms of the Lie quadric, the Lie inner product, and polyhedra. The first class consists of diagrams defined in terms of extremal spheres in the space of Lie spheres, and the second class includes minimization diagrams for functions that can be expressed in terms of affine functions on a higher-dimensional space. These results unify and generalize previous descriptions of generalized Voronoi diagrams as convex hull problems. Special cases include classical Voronoi diagrams, power diagrams, order $k$ and farthest point diagrams, Apollonius diagrams, medial axes, and generalized Voronoi diagrams whose sites are combinations of points, spheres and half-spaces. We describe the application of these results to algorithms for computing generalized Voronoi diagrams and find the complexity of these algorithms.

Minimum Area Venn Diagrams Whose Curves are Polyominoes

Abstract:Venn diagrams are a graphical way to represent a set system. Each of the n sets is represented by a simple closed curve. The n curves subdivide the plane into 2^n open connected regions, each of which represents the intersection of its containing curves' sets. For example, two overlapping circles can divide the plane into 4 regions representing {}, A, B, and A intersect B. Three overlapping circles can also be used to represent the 2^3 ways in which 3 sets can intersect. One of the primary questions related to Venn diagrams concerns which shapes can be used for the curves. The previous examples used 2 and 3 circles, but a 4-set Venn diagram cannot be represented by 4 circles; instead, ellipses must be used. In this paper, we consider Venn diagrams whose curves are the outlines of polyominoes. In particular, we give examples of Venn diagrams where the curves are rotations and translations of a single polyomino, so-called congruent polyVenn diagrams. We also consider the problem of area-minimization (relative to a scaling factor) and present examples of Venn polyominoes which minimize area according to various constraints. At present, these examples do not generalize and so we develop an algorithm that comes close to minimizing the area. The algorithm is simple and utilizes symmetric chain decompositions of the Boolean lattice. We also provide asymptotic results that relate the area required by the algorithm's diagrams to the theoretical minimum area. We conclude by presenting some open problems related to Venn polyominoes and other shape-constrained Venn diagrams.

Abstract:A bstract Recent years have seen a surprising connection between the physics of scattering amplitudes and a class of mathematical objects — the positive Grassmannian, positive loop Grassmannians, tree and loop Amplituhedra — which have been loosely referred to as “positive geometries”. The connection between the geometry and physics is provided by a unique differential form canonically determined by the property of having logarithmic singularities (only) on all the boundaries of the space, with residues on each boundary given by the canonical form on that boundary. The structures seen in the physical setting of the Amplituhedron are both rigid and rich enough to motivate an investigation of the notions of “positive geometries” and their associated “canonical forms” as objects of study in their own right, in a more general mathematical setting. In this paper we take the first steps in this direction. We begin by giving a precise definition of positive geometries and canonical forms, and introduce two general methods for finding forms for more complicated positive geometries from simpler ones — via “triangulation” on the one hand, and “push-forward” maps between geometries on the other. We present numerous examples of positive geometries in projective spaces, Grassmannians, and toric, cluster and flag varieties, both for the simplest “simplex-like” geometries and the richer “polytope-like” ones. We also illustrate a number of strategies for computing canonical forms for large classes of positive geometries, ranging from a direct determination exploiting knowledge of zeros and poles, to the use of the general triangulation and push-forward methods, to the representation of the form as volume integrals over dual geometries and contour integrals over auxiliary spaces. These methods yield interesting representations for the canonical forms of wide classes of positive geometries, ranging from the simplest Amplituhedra to new expressions for the volume of arbitrary convex polytopes.

Abstract:Graphical functions are positive functions on the punctured complex plane $\mathbb{C}\setminus\{0,1\}$ which arise in quantum field theory. We generalize a parametric integral representation for graphical functions due to Lam, Lebrun and Nakanishi, which implies the real analyticity of graphical functions. Moreover we prove a formula that relates graphical functions of planar dual graphs.

Computational Complexity in Algebraic Combinatorics

Abstract:Algebraic Combinatorics originated in Algebra and Representation Theory, studying their discrete objects and integral quantities via combinatorial methods which have since developed independent and self-contained lives and brought us some beautiful formulas and combinatorial interpretations. The flagship hook-length formula counts the number of Standard Young Tableaux, which also gives the dimension of the irreducible Specht modules of the Symmetric group. The elegant Littlewood-Richardson rule gives the multiplicities of irreducible GL-modules in the tensor products of GL-modules. Such formulas and rules have inspired large areas of study and development beyond Algebra and Combinatorics, becoming applicable to Integrable Probability and Statistical Mechanics, and Computational Complexity Theory. We will see what lies beyond the reach of such nice product formulas and combinatorial interpretations and enter the realm of Computational Complexity Theory, that could formally explain the beauty we see and the difficulties we encounter in finding further formulas and ``combinatorial interpretations''. A 85-year-old such problem asks for a positive combinatorial formula for the Kronecker coefficients of the Symmetric group, another one pertains to the plethysm coefficients of the General Linear group. In the opposite direction, the study of Kronecker and plethysm coefficients leads to the disproof of the wishful approach of Geometric Complexity Theory (GCT) towards the resolution of the algebraic P vs NP Millennium problem, the VP vs VNP problem. In order to make GCT work and establish computational complexity lower bounds, we need to understand representation theoretic multiplicities in further detail, possibly asymptotically.
