Abstract:This paper attempts to establish a conceptual framework for the solution of blockchain-driven supply chain finance. This framework is designed to facilitate the coordination relationship between buyer and seller. Besides, it alleviates implementation inefficiency in discrete supply chain financial instruments, such as reverse factoring and dynamic discounting. In addition, this paper proposes the value drivers of blockchain technology and elaborates its unique characteristics in the application of supply chain finance. Although blockchain technology is considered a breakthrough financial technology, research on its impact on supply chain finance is scanty. Therefore, this paper contributes to the future development of supply chain finance based on the latest technological innovations.

Abstract:Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in supply chains often struggle to obtain external financial resources from banks, due to their poor supply chain visibility. Prior studies suggest that adopting blockchain technology can enhance supply chain visibility, thus facilitating access to supply chain finance (SCF). In this study, we compare the traditional SCF mode with the blockchain-enabled SCF mode within the framework of a dual-channel closed-loop supply chain (CLSC). Our analysis incorporates both prepayment financing and accounts receivable financing or purchase order financing into the analytical model. Our main findings are as follows. Firstly, adopting blockchain technology leads to a reduction in the interest rate, enabling the manufacturer and the retailer to raise their buy-back prices. This increase in buy-back prices subsequently encourages greater recycling of used products. Secondly, in a context marked by high cross-price elasticity, we observe abrupt pricing fluctuations in both online and offline sales channels. However, adopting blockchain technology can effectively mitigates these fluctuations, thus ensuring the sustained stability of demand in both sales channels. Thirdly, in the blockchain-enabled mode, equilibrium wholesale price, offline sales price, manufacturer’s buy-back price, and retailer’s buy-back price are higher compared to those in the traditional mode. Conversely, the equilibrium direct sales price is lower in the blockchain-enabled mode than in the traditional mode. Fourthly, changes in interest rates and cross-price elasticity have analogous impacts on pricing dynamics in both the traditional and blockchain-enabled modes. Fifthly, adopting blockchain technology leads to an all-win outcome for participants in SCF arrangements only when the benefits of blockchain-enabled traceability and reduced interest rates outweigh the costs associated with hosting and access.

Abstract:Supply Chain Finance (SCF) is an effective method to lower financing costs and improve financing efficiency and effectiveness, and it has gained research momentum in recent years. This paper adopts a systematic literature review methodology combined with bibliometric, network and content analysis based on 348 papers identified from mainstream academic databases. This review provides insights not previously fully captured or evaluated by other reviews on this topic, including key authors, key journals and the prestige of the reviewed papers. Using rigorous bibliometric and visualisation tools, we identified four research clusters, including deteriorating inventory models under trade credit policy based on the EOQ/EPQ model; inventory decisions with trade credit policy under more complex situations; interaction between replenishment decisions and delay payment strategies in the supply chain and roles of financing service in the supply chain. Based on the clusters identified, we carried out a further content analysis of 112 papers, identifying research gaps and proposing seven actionable directions for future research. The findings provide a robust roadmap for further investigation in this field.

Abstract:Supply Chain Finance (SCF), an important way of integrating industry and finance that has emerged in recent decades, has attracted the interest of both industry and academia. A large number of conceptual studies on SCF support the theory that SCF benefits supply chains by alleviating financing problems and maintaining stability. The focal firms which are the main SCF practices provider help alleviating the financing problem of their partners by weakening part of the working capital management. However, SCF-oriented practice on the focal firm and traditional corporate finance theory which earing profit by improving working capital management are not aligned. This paper attempts to provide empirical evidence to explain this phenomenon on the SCF-oriented perspective. Secondary panel data analysis is employed. The impact of focal firms providing SCF services is used to represent SCF practices in the supply chain since focal firms dominate SCF activities. Cash Conversion Cycle (time perspective), trade credit and prepayment (volume perspective) of the focal firms are independent variables of the analysis. Three type of performances, financial, risk and operations, are dependent variables of the analysis. This study found that a focal firm providing SCF can conditionally improve their firm’s financial performance, risk levels and operations management. Results from different industrial analyses suggest that tertiary industries are best suited to implementing SCF activities. Providing SCF also benefits the firm-level performance of state-owned enterprises. This is the first paper that comprehensively analyses the effects of SCF implementation with different firm characteristics from both a time perspective and a volume perspective.

Abstract:In this paper,we consider a supply chain with a supplier,a downstream buyer and a financial institution,where the supplier is facing financial constraints.We construct a multi-stage decision-making model with or without accounts receivable financing,respectively.After our analysis,we get the expected profits of participants in the supply chain in all stages.Through numerical analysis,we further research the values of the supply chain financing with accounts receivables to supply chain members and the entire supply chain.Our work shows that,small and medium suppliers without financing couldn′t produce in succession,but could when they get accounts receivable financing,and they also could produce optimal production in a shorter period in a fast-growing market.When there is supply chain financing,the buyer may achieve sustained earnings growth because he receives continuous supply,and he benefit more from accounts receivable financing when the seller has more initial capital.The financial institution gets large financing income when the seller has less initial capital,but he will gain less benefit when the seller become strong enough.The small and medium suppliers,buyer and financial institution all benefit from accounts receivable financing.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to show how firm financial management techniques may be used to improve over all supply chain profitability and performance. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses a case‐based approach to demonstrate how supply chain financial management techniques, such as cash‐to‐cash and shared weighted average cost of capital (WACC), can reduce the financial costs experience by a supply chain. Findings This paper provides a methodology to identify and quantify the potential opportunities to increase profitability throughout the supply. Scenarios are offered that illuminate potential supply chain improvements gained by collaborative management of cash‐to‐cash cycles and sharing WACC with trading partners. Research limitations/implications These financial techniques are readily available for use in collaborative supply chain structures. Practical implications Coordinating financial management across the supply chain is a potential tool to align and improve the financial performance of collaborating firms. This method extends to the supply chain those historically firm‐centric financial management concepts such as return on capital and cash flow. The impact is reduced overall cost generated by leveraging the financial strength of the entire supply chain. During economic downturns and times of tight credit proactively managing financials across the supply chain may be the only way some suppliers remain afloat. Originality/value Two firm level financial management approaches are extended and they are adopted for use across the supply chain: cash‐to‐cash management; and leveraging a shared supply chain financing rate. This paper builds on the increasing body of research and practice that suggests trading firm‐optimized for supply chain optimized performance reduces overall cost and improves customer value.

Abstract:Supply chain finance (SCF) is an innovative solution dedicated to optimising financial flows in supply chains, and has drawn tremendous attention from academia and industry. Considering the ever-evolving nature of SCF, the existing literature reviews in this field are limited due to a lack of integration of recent findings. Motivated by the limitation, we attempt to fill this gap by investigating the novel achievements that have been reported in the current literature. By conducting a systematic literature review, we selected 99 qualified papers published between 2010 and the first quarter of 2021, and then used descriptive analysis to identify the literature characteristics, followed by in-depth content analysis. We synthesised nine research dimensions in the selected SCF literature. By virtue of comprehensive analysis, we illustrated the embedded mechanisms among all participants in SCF practices, updated the SCF research framework, summarised the most dominant methods applied in current research, made two classifications of the financial service providers (FSPs) and SCF instruments, and provided five future research directions. The significance of this paper lies in providing both a novel theoretical foundation for academic researchers and a practical guide for industrial practitioners.

Abstract:It is widely agreed that supply chains encompass and integrate material, information, and financial flows across organizations. There is a robust history and continually expanding research agenda investigating supply chain management practice and theory associated with material and information flows and processes. However, the management of financial flows from a supply chain perspective and in combination with the other flows, usually referred to as supply chain finance (SCF), has been under-investigated. Our understanding of SCF approaches and solutions in purchasing and supply management (PSM) is only starting to form. The purpose of this editorial is to provide some grounding of initial studies and concepts of SCF, illustrate new and emerging thought in this discourse with articles published in this special issue, and speculate how the SCF domain may evolve in theory and practice with the advent of new digital technologies and big data analytics.

Contributions to Game Theory and Management

Abstract:The research is devoted to joint working capital management in supply chains aiming to improve joint working capital management methods through minimization of financial supply chain costs on working capital using Supply Chain Finance (SCF) Solutions. Though SCF applicability in Financial Supply Chain management has recently been studied to relieve access to capital sources, managerial perspective of SCF solutions is still uninvestigated as well as few other areas. The research suggests a managerial algorithm that contains four developed models: the model of Collaborative cash conversion cycle two models of SCF solutions and the model of Joint Working Capital optimization. The models imply using such SCF solutions as Factoring, Reverse Factoring and Inventory Financing to improve Joint Working Capital in terms of costs on it and liquidity of both supply chain members and entire chain, providing the optimal conditions of SCF solutions. Quantitative optimization with SCF solutions demonstrates on the cases of supply chains the improvement of financial position and liquidity of all chain members. The research has a potential to de applied in businesses since the algorithm represents a comprehensive managerial tool for Joint Working capital management in supply chains. It might be used to achieve optimal cash conversion cycle values for minimal supply chain costs on working capital constrained by liquidity and profitability target levels.

Abstract:Supply chain finance belongs to trust-inducing financial innovation in essence.From the perspective of risk control,this paper connects with the situation of supply chain finance in practice and reveals why supply chain finance can reduce the credit risk by using the theories of intermediate organization and games.Besides,the paper also points out the theoretical source for the supply chain finance to reduce credit risks,which lies in the effect of supply chain's strength on the adjustment of credit risk and restriction from dynamic games between big and small enterprises along the supply chain.However,commercial banks still need to take some measures to control the latent credit risks during the practice of supply chain finance.

Abstract:Supply chain finance is an effective mechanism to alleviate informational asymmetry between banks and SMEs and facilitate successful financing. C ompanies are becoming increasingly aware that maintaining close relationships with stable suppliers is crucial for the efficient development of supply chain finance. This study, based on a sample of Chinese listed companies from 2010 to 2022, examines the relationship between supply chain finance, supplier stability, and corporate risk-taking. The findings indicate that: 1. Supply chain finance positively influences supplier stability; 2. Corporate risk-taking mediates the relationship between supply chain finance and supplier stability; 3. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that the impact of supply chain finance on supplier stability is more pronounced in western regions and non-heavy pollution industries.

Abstract:Operations and finance are two sides of the same coin. In supply chains, operations management aims to match the supply with demand of material flows, whereas corporate finance seeks to match the supply with demand of monetary flows. With increasing availability of huge amounts of data, operations and finance interfaces in a cycle of material, financial, and information flows. For example, Fintech is re-shaping supply chains, as it has fueled innovative financial products and services that rely on extensive operational data. It has given rise to new business models aimed at directly improving operational performance by alleviating financial frictions, and it has disrupted traditional processes in the delivery of financial services, leading to a wide range of new opera-tional challenges and opportunities. In this special issue, 14 papers were subsequently extended, double-blind reviewed and revised according to the regular IJPE process. A brief summary of the papers is presented below, assigning the papers to categories that reflect their main characteristics. We hope that this gives a good impression of recent research streams in operation and finance in supply chains, and can motivate future studies. We express our sincere gratitude to Prof. T. C. E. Cheng and Prof. Stefan Minner for their strong support of this special issue.

A Model of Supply Chain Finance

Abstract:This article develops a model in which an intermediary uses a supply chain finance (SCF) program to fund suppliers. The SCF program pools liquidity from suppliers and meanwhile provides immediate payment to suppliers with pressing liquidity needs. We show that the intermediary optimally selects not only suppliers with positive profitability but also suppliers with negative profitability who, however, contribute to the liquidity pool. Inserting the model to an otherwise standard monetary framework, we show that with higher nominal interest rates, the SCF program emphasizes the liquidity contribution more and the profitability contribution less. Deviating from the Friedman rule, where only suppliers with positive profitability are selected, may lead to welfare gains.

Abstract:<p>This study develops a supply chain finance adoption model to investigate the key drivers and corresponding outcomes of supply chain finance adoption decisions. We examine the impacts of perceived capital pressure, order fulfillment cycle, and inventory turnover cycle on three types of supply chain finance adoption (accounts receivable finance, inventory finance, accounts payable finance). In addition, we examine the impacts of three types supply chain finance adoption on the performance of supply chain cost reduction. We use data collected from 683 companies of eight industries in China to test our proposed relationships. The results show that perceived capital pressure and order fulfillment cycle are significant predictors of supply chain finance adoption decisions. Accounts receivable finance and inventory finance significantly influence supply chain cost reduction. This study is one of the first attempts to conduct large sample empirical investigation in supply chain finance research. Our findings enhance the understanding of supply chain finance adoption for both academics and practitioners.</p>

Abstract:Supply Chain Finance is as a portfolio of financing and risk mitigation practices and techniques to optimize the management of the working capital and liquidity invested in supply chain processes and transactions. SCF techniques existing on the market can be divided into three categories: receivable purchase, advanced payable, and loans. These financing solutions are significantly ‘eventdriven’, since they aim at satisfying the financial requirements of buyers and sellers, that are triggered by purchase orders, invoices, receivables, other claims, and related pre-shipment and post-shipment processes along the increasingly complex supply chains in which they are involved. Along the way from raw material procurement to production, sales and end-users, several source of risks can threaten the possibility of completing the transactions and the regular functioning of supply chain finance. Digitization can help in managing these risks, facilitating the control of the factors underlying them.

Abstract:This paper examines the past and the future of the interface of operation management and finance with Fintech in supply chain. First, we investigate the evaluation of operation management and finance in supply chain from 2011 to 2021 using CiteSpace. After analyzing all papers retrieved from Web of Science, we find that the number of information and financial flow-focused papers has increased steadily over the years. Second, we conducted a two-round survey to construct a research framework for the field of supply chain operation and finance with Fintech, and identify five important research topics for researchers. Third, to help both firm managers and investors understand supply chain finance in the Fintech era, we explain the relationship between operation capacities and investment elements.
