Abstract:The factor structure, reliability, and validity of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS; S. H. Lovibond & P. F. Lovibond, 1995) and the 21-item short form of these measures (DASS–21) were examined in nonclinical volunteers (n = 49) and patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) diagnoses of panic disorder (n = 67), obsessive–compulsive disorder (n = 54), social phobia (n = 74), specific phobia (n = 17), and major depressive disorder (n = 46). This study replicates previous findings indicating that the DASS distinguishes well between features of depression, physical arousal, and psychological tension and agitation and extends these observations to the DASS–21. In addition, the internal consistency and concurrent validity of the DASS and DASS–21 were in the acceptable to excellent ranges. Mean scores for the various groups were similar to those in previous research, and in the expected direction. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract:Objective Questionnaires are commonly used to assess and screen pain-related, psychological symptoms in patients with chronic pain. In Germany, the "German pain questionnaire" provided by the German Pain Society used for this purpose includes the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS). This study aims to analyze the DASS by fitting its data to the Rasch model to test the psychometric quality. Study design and setting In this cross-sectional study, 932 patients with chronic pain answered the DASS. The 21-item short version was tested via Rasch analysis using the parameters threshold order, fit to the model, Differential Item Functioning, unidimensionality and reliability. Results The Rasch analysis results showed a low reliability, misfitting items, Differential Item Functioning or multidimensionality. It was necessary to remove items from the subscales to improve fit to the Rasch model. A revised depression subscale of the DASS-21 was the only scale that achieved all the required psychometric parameters. The summation of all items to a total scale was not supported. Conclusion More research is required on somatic free measurement of psychological symptoms in patients with chronic pain. The results demonstrate that the development of a new instrument or a revision of existing instruments for screening of psychological symptoms in chronic pain are needed.

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to examine the impact of childhood trauma on HPA axis activity both in depression patients and healthy controls in order to determine the role of HPA axis abnormalities in depression and to find the differences in HPA axis functioning that may lead certain individuals more susceptible to the depressogenic effects of childhood trauma. Eighty subjects aged 18-45 years were recruited into four study groups (n = 18, depression patients with childhood trauma exposures, CTE/ MDD; n = 17, depression patients without childhood adversity, non-CTE/MDD; n = 23, healthy persons with childhood trauma, CTE/non-MDD; and n = 22, healthy persons without childhood adversity, non-CTE/non-MDD). Each participant collected salivary samples in the morning at four time points: immediately upon awakening, 30, 45, and 60 min after awakening for the assessment of CAR and underwent a 1 mg-dexamethasone suppression test (DST). Regardless of depression, subjects with CTE exhibited an enhanced CAR and the CAR areas under the curve to ground (AUCg) were associated with their childhood trauma questionnaire (CTQ) physical neglect scores and CTQ total scores. In addition, the CTE/MDD group also showed a highest post-DST cortisol concentration and a decreased glucocorticoid feedback inhibition among four groups of subjects. The present findings suggested that childhood trauma was associated with hyperactivity of HPA axis as measured with CAR, potentially reflecting the vulnerability for developing depression after early life stress exposures. Moreover, dysfunction of the GR-mediated negative feedback control might contribute to the development of depression after CTE. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Breast cancer impacts the psychological well-being of women, leaving them at risk of developing depression, anxiety, and other stress-related disorders. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21) is a widely used measure, although empirical evidence regarding its psychometric properties in the breast cancer population is limited. The purpose of this study was to conduct an exhaustive analysis of the psychometric properties of the DASS-21 in a sample of Spanish women diagnosed with breast cancer. Participants were 289 breast cancer patients who completed the DASS-21 and other questionnaires measuring life satisfaction, positive and negative affect, flourishing, perceived stress, and breast cancer-specific stressors. In terms of validity evidence based on the internal structure of the DASS-21, adequate fit indices were obtained for the model based on three first-order factors (depression, anxiety, stress) and one second-order factor (general psychological distress). Reliability coefficients (McDonald's omega) ranged from .84 to .95. Validity evidence based on relationships with other variables was also provided by moderate and strong correlations with well-being indicators and stress measures. The results support the use of the DASS-21 for measuring general psychological distress in the breast cancer context, where it may provide useful information for the design of psychological interventions with patients.

Abstract:Despite extensive investigations of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21) since its development in 1995, its factor structure and other psychometric properties still need to be firmly established, with several calls for revising its item structure. Employing confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), this study examined the factor structure of the DASS-21 and five shortened versions of the DASS-21 among psychiatric patients (N = 168) and the general public (N = 992) during the COVID-19 confinement period in Saudi Arabia. Multigroup CFA, Mann Whitney W test, Spearman’s correlation, and coefficient alpha were used to examine the shortened versions of the DASS-21 (DASS-13, DASS-12, DASS-9 (two versions), and DASS-8) for invariance across age and gender groups, discriminant validity, predictive validity, item coverage, and internal consistency, respectively. Compared with the DASS-21, all three-factor structures of the shortened versions expressed good fit, with the DASS-8 demonstrating the best fit and highest item loadings on the corresponding factors in both samples (χ2(16, 15) = 16.5, 67.0; p = 0.420, 0.001; CFI = 1.000, 0.998; TLI = 0.999, 0.997; RMSEA = 0.013, 0.059, SRMR = 0.0186, 0.0203). The DASS-8 expressed configural, metric, and scalar invariance across age and gender groups. Its internal consistency was comparable to other versions (α = 0.94). Strong positive correlations of the DASS-8 and its subscales with the DASS-21 and its subscales (r = 0.97 to 0.81) suggest adequate item coverage and good predictive validity of this version. The DASS-8 and its subscales distinguished the clinical sample from the general public at the same level of significance expressed by the DASS-21 and other shortened versions, supporting its discriminant validity. Neither the DASS-21 nor the shortened versions distinguished patients diagnosed with depression and anxiety from each other or from other psychiatric conditions. The DASS-8 represents a valid short version of the DASS-21, which may be useful in research and clinical practice for quick identification of individuals with potential psychopathologies. Diagnosing depression/anxiety disorders may be further confirmed in a next step by clinician-facilitated examinations. Brevity of the DASS-21 would save time and effort used for filling the questionnaire and support comprehensive assessments by allowing the inclusion of more measures on test batteries.

Abstract:Depression, anxiety, and stress continue to be among the largest burdens of disease, globally. The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 Items (DASS-21) is a shortened version of DASS-41 developed to measure these mental health conditions. The DASS-41 has strong evidence of validity and reliability in multiple contexts. However, the DASS-21, and the resulting item properties, has been explored less in terms of modern test theories. One such theory is Item Response Theory (IRT), and we use IRT models to explore latent item and person traits of each DASS-21 sub-scale among people living in Malaysia. Specifically, we aimed to assess Classical Test Theory and IRT properties including dimensionality, internal consistency (reliability), and item-level properties. We conducted a web-based cross-sectional study and sent link-based questionnaires to people aged 18 and above in a private university and requested to roll out the link. Overall and individual sub-scales' Cronbach's alpha of the DASS-21 indicates an excellent internal consistency. The average inter-item correlation and corrected inter-item correlations for each of the sub-scales indicated acceptable discrimination. On average, DASS-21 total scores and sub-scale scores were significantly higher among female participants than males. The Graded Response Model had better empirical fit to sub-scale response data. Raw summated and latent (IRT estimated) scores of the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress sub-scales, and overall DASS-21 were strongly correlated. Thus, this study provides evidence of validity supporting the use of the DASS-21 as a mental health screening tool among Malaysians. Specifically, standard error of measurement was minimized to provide robust evidence of potential utility in identifying participants who are and are not experiencing these mental health issues. Additional research is warranted to ensure that test content culturally appropriate and accurately measuring cultural norms of depression, anxiety, and stress.

Abstract:This study evaluated the dimensionality, invariance, and reliability of the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale–21 (DASS-21) within and across Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Romania, Taiwan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and the United States ( N = 2,580) in college student samples. We used confirmatory factor analyses to compare the fit of four different factor structures of the DASS-21: a unidimensional model, a three-correlated-factors model, a higher order model, and a bifactor model. The bifactor model, with three specific factors (depression, anxiety, and stress) and one general factor (general distress), presented the best fit within each country. We also calculated ancillary bifactor indices of model-based dimensionality of the DASS-21 and model-based reliability to further examine the validity of the composite total and subscale scores and the use of unidimensional modeling. Results suggested the DASS-21 can be used as a unidimensional scale. Finally, measurement invariance of the best fitting model was tested across countries indicating configural invariance. The traditional three-correlated-factors model presented scalar invariance across Canada, Hong Kong, Romania, Taiwan, and the United States. Overall, these analyses indicate that the DASS-21 would best be used as a general score of distress rather than three separate factors of depression, anxiety, and stress, in the countries studied.

Abstract:Cross-culturally measurement invariant instruments are useful for the assessment of mental symptoms across cultures. The current study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties and measurement invariance of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS-21) (DASS) across Pakistan and Germany. German participants were recruited through an online survey (N = 1323), while Pakistani participants were recruited through online survey or paper-and-pencil survey (N = 1841). The DASS-21 showed good reliability, construct and structure validity in both countries. The DASS-21 indicated partial weak (stress subscale) and partial strong measurement invariance (depression and anxiety subscales) between both countries. Latent mean comparison of depression and anxiety symptoms between Pakistani and German students indicated that Pakistani university students experience more symptoms of depression and anxiety. Results suggest that the DASS-21 could be used in Pakistan and Germany, but caution should be taken when making direct comparisons between the two countries.

Abstract:Introduction The Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) is recognized as being a widely used measure for the assessment of negative emotional states. While the DASS-21 has been widely used for assessing mental health in Pakistan, limited research has been done regarding its factor structure and measurement invariance. Objectives To assess the factor structure and measurement invariance of the DASS-21 among young adults in Pakistan. Methods A large sample of 1361 Pakistani young adults had completed the scale during the current study comprising 666 males and 695 females with a mean age of 24.51 years. Results Excellent internal consistency reliability was found for the overall DASS-21 and its three subscales (depression, anxiety and stress) ranging from r = .86 to .71 (Cronbach alpha). Moreover, the three subscales were strongly and significantly associated with one another. Additionally, the results showed a good fit of the three-factor model and the one-factor model of the DASS-21 aimed at assessing gender psychological distress. Strong measurement invariance was found regarding gender therefore showing that the DASS-21 is understood and interpreted similarly by males and females. However, little evidence was found regarding the three subscales (depression, anxiety and stress) for the measurement of three distinct constructs. Conclusions These findings confirm the utility of the DASS-21 for measuring mental health in Pakistan among young adults. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Abstract:Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, Ahead of Print. Despite widespread evidence-based treatments for addressing internalizing concerns, many youth do not demonstrate reliable or clinically meaningful improvement. Regular progress monitoring, consisting of measurement and feedback, offers the opportunity to improve outcomes in real time. The 21-item Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS-21; Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995) has potential as a progress-monitoring tool for internalizing concerns in youth; however, limited psychometric data are available to support this use. The purpose of this study was to investigate the dependability of data obtained from the DASS-21 when completed by adolescents in a clinical setting. This study also aimed to understand the feasibility and utility of using the DASS-21 as a progress-monitoring tool from youth and clinicians' perspectives. Generalizability and dependability analyses were conducted to determine the number of ratings needed to obtain a dependable estimate of youth functioning within 1 week. Whereas two daily ratings were needed to dependably estimate total distress, results for the depression, anxiety, and stress subscales indicated that two to five data points would be needed over the course of the week. Finally, results demonstrate the usability of the DASS-21 from both youth and clinician perspectives when used in a progress-monitoring context.

Mental Health Measurement in a Post Covid-19 World: Psychometric Properties and Invariance of the DASS-21 in Athletes and Non-athletes

Abstract:Psychological science faces a call to action researching the implications of the corona virus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic. Rapid reviews have reported that maintaining rigorous research standards is a priority for the field, such as ensuring reliable and valid measurement, when investigating people's experience of Covid-19 (O'Connor et al., 2020). However, no research to date has validated a measure mental health symptomology for an athlete population. The current research addresses this gap by examining the internal consistency, factor structure, invariance, and convergent validity of the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21; Lovibond and Lovibond, 1995) in two athlete samples. Participants completed the DASS-21 and sport-specific measures of mental health such as the Profile of Mood States - Depression subscale (POMS-D), Sport Anxiety Scale-2 (SAS-2), Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ), and Athlete Psychological Strain Questionnaire (APSQ). In sample one (n = 894), results of exploratory structural equation modeling indicated that a three-factor model provided good fit to the data, but a bifactor model provided better fit. Factor loadings indicated minimal misspecification and higher loadings on the general-factor. Invariance testing suggested equivalence across gender, athletic expertise, sport type, and injury status. Further, latent mean differences analyses indicated that females and injured athletes scored higher than male and non-injured athletes on all DASS-21 factors reporting higher mental health symptomology, those with more expertise scored higher on the general-factor and depression and those with less expertise scored higher on anxiety and stress, and no differences between team and individual athletes. In sample two (n = 589), the bifactor structure was replicated. Results largely supported the scales convergent validity with depression predicting POMS-D scores, whereas all three subscales predicted the SAS-2, ABQ, and APSQ scores. Internal consistency was acceptable in both samples. The current work provides initial support for use of the DASS-21 as an operationalisation of mental health symptomology in athletes. Theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed.
Psychometric properties of the 23-Item Clinician Administered Dissociative States Scale (CADSS) in a psychological trauma population

Abstract:Objective: Dissociative symptoms are both a pathological consequence of exposure to psychological trauma as well as a side effect of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist medications; therefore, accurate and valid assessment of these symptoms is important. The psychometric properties of the 23-item Clinician Administered Dissociative States Scale (CADSS) have been characterized in the ketamine and esketamine literatures. Here, we examine its performance in a sample with and without posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a history of exposure to psychological trauma. Methods: Participants with a history of psychological trauma with (N = 148) and without (N = 100) the diagnosis of PTSD and healthy participants without a psychiatric disorder or history of trauma (N = 28) were assessed with the 23-item CADSS and other psychometric and neuropsychological assessments. Analyses were performed to examine internal consistency, convergent and discriminant validity, factor structure, differential performance in populations reported to be more or less likely to report dissociative symptoms (e.g., patients with and without PTSD), and sensitivity to change resulting from exposure to trauma-related sights and sounds. Results: The 23-item CADSS was found to have high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.91) and a single-factor structure. CADSS total scores in trauma-exposed participants with PTSD were higher than those in trauma-exposed participants without PTSD and non-traumatized non-PTSD participants. Finally, veterans with Iraq combat-related PTSD showed a significant increase in CADSS total score after exposure to combat-related slides and sounds. Conclusion: The 23-item CADSS, already validated as a tool to measure dissociation related to administration of NMDA receptor antagonist medication, performs in a reliable and valid manner in the assessment of dissociation in psychologically traumatized participants.
Criterion validity of a single-item measure of fear avoidance behavior following mild traumatic brain injury

Abstract:Maladaptive coping such as fear avoidance behavior can prolong recovery from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Routine assessment of fear avoidance may improve management of mTBI. This study aimed to validate a single-item measure of fear avoidance to make its assessment more pragmatic. The present study is a secondary analysis of a clinical trial that involved adults with persistent post-concussion symptoms ( N = 90, 63% female). Participants completed the single-item fear avoidance rating, a validated legacy measure of fear avoidance (Fear Avoidance Behavior after Traumatic Brain Injury; FAB-TBI), and measures of anxiety (General Anxiety Disorder-7), depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9), post-concussion symptoms (Rivermead Postconcussion Symptoms Questionnaire), and disability (World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 12.0). Questionnaires were completed twice, at baseline (mean 18.1 weeks post injury) and again 12–16 weeks later following study-delivered rehabilitation in addition to usual care. We analyzed the associations (Spearman's correlations) and agreement (weighted Kappa) between the single-item and FAB-TBI at baseline, posttreatment, individual FAB-TBI item scores, and the change in scores between baseline and posttreatment. In addition, we examined correlations between the single-item fear avoidance measure and related constructs, including anxiety, depression, post-concussion symptoms, and disability. The single-item fear avoidance measure correlated strongly with the FAB-TBI both at baseline and following treatment ( ρ = 0.63 − 0.67, p < .001), and moderately with FAB-TBI item scores ( ρ = 0.4 − 0.6). The correlation between the change in these scores from baseline to posttreatment was moderate ( ρ = 0.45, p < .001). Agreement between the single-item fear avoidance measure and discretized FAB-TBI scores was moderate (κ = 0.45 − 0.51). Before and after treatment, the single-item fear avoidance measure correlated moderately with anxiety ( ρ = 0.34), depression ( ρ = 0.43), post-concussion symptoms ( ρ = 0.50), and disability ( ρ = 0.43). The FAB-TBI was more strongly correlated with these measures ( ρ = 0.53 − 0.73). In summary, the present study supports the criterion validity of the single-item fear avoidance measure. This measure may be a useful screening and monitoring tool for patients with mTBI but is not a substitute for the FAB-TBI questionnaire.

Abstract:Background: The Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) are designed to identify quickly and differentiate between the symptoms of depression and anxiety in the non-clinical population. Different versions (original and short) were validated in many cultures. Nevertheless, there are no data of factorial validity of the different versions of this scale in Polish culture. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the factor structure using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and internal consistency of DASS-42 (original version) and two short versions (DASS-21 items and DASS-12 items) in the Polish population. Methods: The DASS-42 was administered to a non-clinical sample, broadly representative of the general Polish adult population ( n = 1,021) in terms of demographic variables. The DASS-21 and DASS-12 version used in this study comprise seven and four items from each of the following corresponding three subscales of the Polish version of DASS-42. Results: There were two models that fitted best for DASS-42: (a) modified three correlated factors (depression, anxiety, and stress) with cross-loadings and (b) second order (general factor of psychological distress) and three factors with cross-loadings. There were also two models that fitted best for DASS-21 and DASS-12: (a) modified three correlated factors (depression, anxiety, and stress) and (b) second order (general factor of psychological distress) and three factors. Conclusions: All three versions of DASS appear to have an acceptable factorial structure. However, the shorter versions (DASS-21 and DASS-12) may be more feasible to use in general medical practice and also be less burdensome to participants.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose Accurate measurement of latent abilities is essential for valid inference. The Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) assesses the “ability to bounce back”from stressful situations, and resilience may play a role in concussion recovery. Questions regarding the factor structure of the BRS have been explored in other populations, but evidence of its measurement quality in concussion is lacking. The present study investigated the psychometric properties of the BRS in concussed adolescents within a Rasch framework. Method 927 participants aged 12 to 18 (M = 14.7; 50.3% female) underwent clinical evaluation within 30 days of injury in the ConTex study. The BRS contains 6 items rated on a 5-point Likert scale (Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree), half of which are reverse scored. The Rasch Rating Scale Model was applied and item fit statistics and dimensionality were examined to assess the degree of fit of the data to the Rasch model. Results Item difficulties ranged −0.82 to 0.77. Item fit was adequate based on mean-square infit and outfit values. The BRS demonstrated sufficient targeting except for participants at the highest and lowest range of latent ability. Unidimensionality testing indicated the presence of a secondary dimension. Conclusions The BRS showed suboptimal fit with the Rasch model based on lack of unidimensionality. However, violations likely reflect item wording effects and not a substantive dimension that merits scale modification. Application of Rasch and other item response theory methodologies can enable development of more psychometrically sound and clinically informative tools for use in the context of concussion outcomes.

Abstract:Background: The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 Items (DASS-21) is commonly used to assess the mental health of students, but there is a need for further clarification regarding its equivalence, structure, and core items. Methods: We conducted a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on a sample of 7943 Chinese students to examine the performance of the DASS-21 and assess measurement invariance. Additionally, we utilized network analysis to investigate the structure and centrality of students' mental health. Results: Our findings revealed a stable three-factor structure for the DASS-21, characterized by high correlations among depression, anxiety, and stress. The DASS-21 demonstrated strict invariance across genders and weak invariance across levels of education. Network analysis indicated that symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress form clusters, with some symptoms exhibiting strong correlations with each other. Conclusion: Our study highlights a substantial interrelation among depression, anxiety, and stress, revealing a structurally clustered pattern. Network analysis underscores the interconnectedness and centrality of these symptoms, recommending a shorter version of the DASS, and emphasizing the imperative for targeted interventions aimed at improving the psychological well-being of students.
Accuracy of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) for Screening on Comorbid Internalizing Disorders among Youth in Substance Use Disorder Treatment

Abstract:Introduction: Major depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are among the most prevalent comorbid mental disorders in youth addiction treatment. Hence, screening for these internalizing disorders should be part of the standard routine at intake in substance use disorder treatment. We investigated the usefulness of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) as a screener for this purpose. Methods: A nationally representative sample of 421 treatment-seeking youths aged 16-22 years with a primary cannabis, alcohol, cocaine, or amphetamine use disorder participated in the study. At intake, we administered the DASS-21 and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI; Sheehan et al., 1998) based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5), as "gold standard," as part of a broader baseline assessment of the Youth in transition study [Moska et al. BMC Psychiatry. 2021;21(1):1-11]. Results: At comparable sensitivity (0.80-0.84), based on the optimal cut-off value, specificity was higher for the DASS-21 total score detecting any DSM-5 internalizing disorder (0.62) than for the DASS subscales specifically detecting depression, anxiety, or PTSD (0.44, 0.49, and 0.51, respectively). Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses showed an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.80 for the DASS total score to detect any internalizing disorder ("good discrimination"), compared with AUC values of 0.70-0.75 of the DASS depression and anxiety subscales to detect DSM-5 depression, anxiety, and PTSD ("fair discrimination"). The optimal DASS total score cut-off value of ≥44 for detecting any internalizing disorder resulted in 0.81 sensitivity, 0.62 specificity, 0.80 positive predictive value, and 0.64 negative predictive value. Conclusion: Given the high prevalence of comorbid internalizing disorders in youth addiction care, the need to address these comorbid disorders in treatment, and the favorable accuracy of the DASS to detect these disorders, we recommend to implement the DASS-21 as routine screener in youth addiction treatment in the Netherlands.
Use of the Dementia Assessment Sheet for Community‐based Integrated Care System 21 Items among Chinese Community‐dwelling Older Adults

Abstract:AimThe objective of this study was to verify the reliability and validity of the Dementia Assessment Sheet for Community‐based Integrated Care System 21 items (DASC‐21) among Chinese community‐dwelling older adults, and to explore the related factors for dementia screening.MethodsThe study adopted a cross‐sectional design, and a total of 1152 participants aged ≥60 years were recruited from 26 locations in China. All data were collected using questionnaires through face‐to‐face interviews. The logistic regression model was used to evaluate the effect factors of DASC‐21 for dementia screening. The receiver operating characteristic curves were used to determine the optimal cut‐off points and the accuracy of the DASC‐21 for dementia and mild cognitive impairment screening.ResultsFor test–retest reliability, the Pearson correlation coefficient was 0.873 (P < 0.001). In the criterion‐related validity, the DASC‐21 scores were significantly and negatively correlated with the Mini‐Mental State Examination (r = −0.663, P < 0.001) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (r = −0.565, P < 0.001) scores. The results of the receiver operating characteristic analysis showed that there were different optimal cut‐off values for different age groups. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves were 95.6% and 90.3% for dementia and mild cognitive impairment screening using DASC‐21 after considering related effect factors.ConclusionsThe DASC‐21 was confirmed to be a valid and reliable instrument for dementia screening among Chinese community‐dwelling older adults. Our results suggested that the age, education level and 2‐week prevalence were important effect factors for dementia screening using the DASC‐21. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2021; 21: 705–711.

Abstract:The Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21) has three 7-item subscales (depression, anxiety, and stress). The current study aims assess the gender-based measurement invariance of the DASS-21 questionnaire in a Chinese university student sample from five different cities. The sample was composed of 13208 participants (62.3% female, mean age of 19.7 years, and <i>SD</i> age = 1.8). Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis supported full measurement invariance for the three subscales. The findings support the measurement invariance of DASS-21 scores across gender. Future research on the DASS should include additional validation across ethnicities and testing of all versions of the DASS.
