Synthetic aspects of stereoselective hydroformylation

Abstract:The hydroformylation of olefins is well known as one of the industrially most important processes which rely on homogeneous catalysis. Additionally, the hydroformylation represents an ideal atom economic C/C-bond forming reaction with unique opportunities for application in target-oriented organic synthesis, provided that selectivity and in particular stereoselectivity in the course of this metal-catalyzed addition reaction can be controlled. This Account describes recent developments on new and efficient concepts making use of substrate-direction to control stereoselectivity throughout the course of the hydroformylation reaction. Emphasis is given to the concept of substrate-bound catalyst-directing groups which allow for high levels of acyclic stereocontrol. Applications of these new stereoselective variants of the hydroformylation reaction in the context of organic synthesis are discussed. Additionally, recent applications of stereoselective hydroformylation as part of Domino-type processes are covered.

Abstract:One‐pot synthetic procedures allow multiple chemical transformations circumventing the isolation of intermediates and thus saving time, energy and feedstocks. Within the scope of one‐pot processes, cascade, domino, or tandem procedures are even more efficient, as multiple reactions can occur in parallel. Hydroformylation is an industrially relevant reaction particularly suitable for this kind of methodology, as the primary products (aldehydes) are usually converted into compounds containing other functionalities. In addition to examples of transformations of the substrate before the hydroformylation step or the transformation of the aldehyde into other functionalities, we highlight a novel approach, in which an additional functionalization takes place in a remote site of the substrate molecule, along with the hydroformylation of the carbon‐carbon double bond.

Abstract:An efficient methodology for synthesizing a small library of easily tunable and sterically bulky ligands for asymmetric hydroformylation (AHF) has been reported. Five groups of alkene substrates have been tested with excellent conversions, moderate-to-excellent regio- and enantioselectivities. Among the best result of the reported literature, application of ligand 1 c in the highly selective AHF of the challenging substrate 2,5-dihydrofuran yielded almost one isomer in up to 99 % conversion along with enantiomeric excesses (ee) of up to 92 %. Highly enantioselective AHF of dihydropyrrole substrates is achieved using the same ligand, with up to 95 % ee and up to >1:50 β-isomer/α-isomer ratio.

Abstract:A hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP)-promoted hydroxydifluoromethylation of aniline, indole, and pyrrole derivatives with difluoroacetaldehyde ethyl hemiacetal has been developed. This protocol provides a facile and straightforward approach to access diverse difluoromethylated carbinols in good to excellent yields under mild conditions. Furthermore, gram-scale and synthetic derivatization experiments have also been demonstrated.

Abstract:The rhodium‐catalyzed hydroformylation of alkynyl sulfides under mild conditions is described. The method gives access to α‐sulfenyl acroleins with good regioselectivities (ratio α/β up to 89/11) and is applicable to variously substituted substrates. It is effective even on more complex substrates, such as cysteine and cholesterol derivatives. To demonstrate the synthetic potential of the obtained products, (Z)‐3‐cyclohexyl‐2‐methylsulfenyl acrolein was selected as an example and its sulfur atom selectively oxidized to the corresponding sulfoxide or sulfone. Acid‐promoted (Z) to (E) isomerization of the double bond occurred during oxidation. The three obtained sulfenyl‐, sulfinyl‐, and sulfonyl‐functionalized acroleins have been then used as dienophiles to access cyclohexene carbaldehydes.

Status and future aspects of industrial hydroformylation

Abstract:Since the discovery of hydroformylation more than 60 years ago, a very large demand for aldehydes has developed. Today, aldehydes having chain lengths of 2-18 carbon atoms are produced. The reaction of propene to butanal plays the most important role here. Competition is very harsh in these markets because of overcapacities and alternative products, The most active catalyst systems are Rh complexes modified with phosphorus-containing ligands. Attempts are being made to utilize these systems, which have become established for the production of butanal, for industrial processes for the reaction of longer-chain olefins. Industrial research is being increasingly concentrated, with fewer and fewer companies carrying out most of the work. The focus of industrial research is the development and handling of catalysts. There is increasing interest in the development of two-phase reactions.

Abstract:Investigation on asymmetric hydrogenation of olefins is of great importance in both pharmaceutical molecule synthesis and chemical industry due to the high demand for enantiopure compounds. The established methods often require geometrically pure olefins. The enantioconvergent reaction provided the possibility to access a single stereoisomer via hydrogenation of E/Z-olefin mixtures; however, a polar functional group next to the carbon-carbon double bond was usually necessary. Here, we reported a cobalt-catalyzed enantioconvergent hydrogenation of readily available minimally functionalized E/Z-olefin mixtures. This strategy shows good functional group tolerance and provides an alternative means to enantioconvergent transformation. The preliminary mechanistic studies indicated that cobalt-catalyzed isomerization was the key to achieve the convergent transformation.

Abstract:Transition-metal-catalyzed hydroformylation reactions constitute one of the most powerful tools for C-C bond formation in organic synthesis and represent an outstanding example of the application of homogeneous catalysis on an industrial scale. This process allows for the straightforward conversion of inexpensive chemical feedstock into broadly applicable aldehydes, which serve as major building blocks for numerous chemical products. These products are highly valuable for the chemical industry and used as plasticizers, detergents, and surfactants on a million ton scale. Moreover, aldehydes serve as versatile chemical intermediates for the production of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Currently, most of the bulk hydroformylation processes rely on rhodium-based catalysts. The increasing demand and resulting high cost of this precious metal has resulted in alternative transition-metal catalysts becoming highly desirable. The following Review summarizes the progress achieved utilizing Ru, Ir, Pd, Pt, and Fe catalysts in hydroformylation reactions.

Abstract:Hydroformylation is an industrial process that allows for the production of aldehydes from alkenes using transition metals. The reaction can be carried out in water, and the catalyst may be recycled at the end of the reaction. The industrial application of rhodium-catalyzed aqueous hydroformylation has been demonstrated for smaller olefins (propene and butene). Unfortunately, larger olefins are weakly soluble in water, which results in very low catalytic activity. In an attempt to counteract this, we investigated the use of amphiphilic oleic succinyl-cyclodextrins (OS-CDs) synthesized from oleic acid derivatives and maleic anhydride. OS-CDs were found to increase the catalytic activity of rhodium during the hydroformylation of water-insoluble olefins, such as 1-decene and 1-hexadecene, by promoting mass transfer. Recyclability of the catalytic system was also evaluated in the presence of these cyclodextrins.

Abstract:Hydroformylation of alkenes, the most important homogenously catalyzed industrial process, has been widely used into the manufacture of aldehydes, and the resulting aldehydes are further converted into high value-added alcohols, acids and other derivatives. For hydroformylation processes, homogeneous catalysts represent the advantages of specific reactive sites, prominent activity and selectivity, while heterogeneous catalysts represent the advantages of easy recyclability, separation of catalysts and products. However, poor recyclability of traditional homogeneous metal complex catalysts, low reactivity and stability of heterogeneous metal nano-catalysts are still huge challenges. Notably, construction of catalytic materials that integrate the advantages of homo- and heterogeneous catalysis provides new opportunities for highly efficient heterogeneous hydroformylation. Herein, research progress of the catalytic materials that merge homo- and heterogeneous catalysis in hydroformylation are reviewed (classic liquid-liquid biphasic systems are not included owing to insightful discussion reported in previous reviews have been made) on the synthesis, material characteristics and application according to classification of their diverse property, and their perspectives for the near future are prospected.

Abstract:The first highly regioselective and general osmium-catalyzed hydroformylation of olefins to aldehydes is reported. The combination of Os-3(CO)(12) and imidazoyl-substituted phosphine ligands allows n-selective (up to 99%) hydroformylation of bulk aliphatic as well as functional alkenes in good yields (64-87%).

Abstract:In the presence of phosphine oxides, specifically triphenylphosphine oxide (P14), the cobalt-catalyzed hydroformylation of olefins takes place under mild conditions compared to traditional processes. It is shown that the addition of P14 dramatically improves the preactivation of the classic cobalt precatalyst, thus saving time and energy. Abstract:Hydroformylation of olefins can generate linear and branched aldehydes, and the branched aldehydes are attractive precursors for the synthesis of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Hydroformylation is considered an important strategy of green chemistry because of its intrinsic atom economic nature and recent development of highly selective protocols. We herein summarize the advances of hydroformylation showing branched selectivity in organic synthesis. A mechanistic discussion is provided prior to the examples of synthetically useful branchselective hydroformylation reactions. Branch-selective hydroformylation can further contribute to the construction of chiral molecules and the design of one-pot synthesis. This review aims to provide information about catalyst selection, reaction conditions, and substrate scope of branch-selective hydroformylation, and inspire further development in this chemistry.

Abstract:Utilization of renewable biomass resources to transform them into value-added platform molecules has aroused widespread attention. Anethole (AN) is widely considered to be a significant chemical owing to its extensive application in food additives, daily necessities and pharmaceuticals. Therefore, reducing the dependence on natural fennel oil is a rational approach. We report a "green" and effective pattern of stereoselective conversion of biomass-derived 4′-methoxyphenylacetone (4-MOPP) into trans -AN. We employed a "domino" strategy of catalytic transfer hydrogenation and dehydration promoted by an interesting Lewis/Brønsted bifunctional acid catalyst, which was developed by template-free self-assembly of Hf 4+ and phenylphosphonic acid (PA) followed by grinding sulfonation. Importantly, by simply adjusting composite components, PA–Hf–SO 3 H (1.5 : 1) exhibited a favorable amorphous inorganic–organic structure with specific surface area (135.59 m 2 g −1 ), affluent mesopores (4.01 nm), indispensable Lewis/Brønsted acidic sites, as well as strong hydrophobicity and stability. The optimal reaction conditions were investigated by the single-factor method and response surface methodology; a high yield of 98.3% with excellent reusability was demonstrated. The corresponding kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were determined, and a feasible reaction mechanism proposed. Finally, the developed model showed a wide range of substrate versatility, thereby providing a promising catalytic strategy for the effective synthesis of AN or other high-value molecules.

Abstract:The hydroformylation of olefins is one of the most important homogeneously catalyzed processes in industry to produce bulk chemicals. Despite the high catalytic activities and selectivity’s using rhodium-based homogeneous hydroformylation catalysts, catalyst recovery and recycling from the reaction mixture remain a challenging topic on a process level. Therefore, technical solutions involving alternate approaches with heterogeneous catalysts for the conversion of olefins into aldehydes have been considered and research activities have addressed the synthesis and development of heterogeneous rhodium-based hydroformylation catalysts. Different strategies were pursued by different groups of authors, such as the deposition of molecular rhodium complexes, metallic rhodium nanoparticles and single-atom catalysts on a solid support as well as rhodium complexes present in supported liquids. An overview of the recent developments made in the area of the heterogenization of homogeneous rhodium catalysts and their application in the hydroformylation of short-chain olefins is given. A special focus is laid on the mechanistic understanding of the heterogeneously catalyzed reactions at a molecular level in order to provide a guide for the future design of rhodium-based heterogeneous hydroformylation catalysts.
