Abstract:Parity-time (PT) PT ) symmetry provides a new technique for the manipulation of oscillation modes in the field of microwave photonics. In this paper, we conceive and experimentally demonstrate a simple PT-symmetric all-optical microwave oscillator (AOMO) based on a single polarimetric loop, overcoming the challenges of manipulating gain and loss and mutual coupling ratio and perfect control of the geometry in the dual-loop configurations. We also uncover the analytics of the PT-symmetry condition in an AOMO with a detailed nonquantum description. By controlling the polarization rotation angle of the PT-symmetric structure, two mutually coupled loops with balanced gain and loss are easily conceived, enabling the proposed AOMO to operate in the single mode. The optical-optical feedback modulation and oscillatory frequency selection are implemented using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect, respectively. Benefiting from the SOA's cross-gain modulation, the SBS-based frequency selection, and the PT- symmetric breaking, dual-wavelength optical signals can be achieved with wideband tunability, very low beating phase noise, and high stability. In the experiment, we successfully generated an oscillating signal tuning from 3 to 30 GHz, and the measured phase noise reached - 103.2 dBc/Hz at 10 GHz and - 90.69 dBc/Hz at 30 GHz at 10-kHz offset frequency.
Parity-time-symmetric frequency-tunable optoelectronic oscillator with a single dual-polarization optical loop

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a parity-time (PT)-symmetric frequency-tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) in which the PT symmetry is implemented based on a single dual-polarization optical loop. By employing the inherent birefringence of a z-cut lithium niobate (LiNbO3) phase modulator (PM), two mutually coupled optoelectronic loops supporting orthogonally polarized light waves with one experiencing a gain and the other a loss are implemented. By controlling the gain, loss, and the coupling coefficients between the two loops, the PT symmetry breaking condition is met, which enables the OEO to operate in single mode without using an ultranarrow passband optical or microwave filter. The frequency tunability is realized using a microwave photonic filter (MPF) implemented using the PM and a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG). The proposed PT-symmetric OEO is experimentally evaluated. A stable and frequency-tunable microwave signal from 2 to 12 GHz is generated. The phase noise of the generated signal at 11.8 GHz is measured, which is -124dBc/Hz at a frequency offset of 10 kHz.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian photonics, relaying on parity-time (PT) symmetry, have shown promise in achieving mode selection for optical or microwave single-mode oscillation. Typically, a PT-symmetric system is constructed using two coupled loops with identical geometry. This article utilizes the PT-symmetry property to select a single frequency mode in an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO). However, traditional OEO implementations often involve discrete components, limiting widespread adoption due to factors such as size, weight, power consumption, and cost. Our aim in this paper is to leverage integrated components within the OEO loop. The proposed structure incorporates an integrated micro-ring resonator (MRR) with a high-quality factor (Q-factor) that serves both as a modulator and a resonator. Additionally, we suggest employing an adjustable integrated power splitter utilizing a micro heater to balance the gain and loss of two mutually coupled OEO loops. In this configuration, two integrated photo detectors (PD) are also utilized. In this setup, the single-frequency mode can be easily identified by simultaneously utilizing the properties of PT-symmetry and an integrated high-Q-factor resonator, obviating the need for a narrowband microwave filter. By adjusting the center frequency of the microwave photonic filter (MPF), the frequency of the generated signal can be tuned over a wide range. For instance, setting the generated frequency of the microwave signal to 11.5 GHz results in a measured phase noise of − 76.5 dBc/Hz at a 10-kHz offset frequency, with a side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 40 dB.

Abstract:An optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is a microwave photonic system consisting of an amplified optoelectronic feedback loop to generate a microwave signal. To reduce the phase noise, the feedback loop must be long to ensure a high Q factor, which is usually implemented by incorporating a long optical fiber in the loop. The key limitation of using a long fiber is that a large number of closely spaced longitudinal modes exist in the feedback loop, which makes single-frequency oscillation difficult to achieve. In this article, we propose to incorporate a photonic integrated microdisk resonator (MDR) in an OEO to implement parity-time (PT) symmetry as well as frequency tuning. By employing the reciprocity of light propagation in the MDR, two mutually coupled optoelectronic loops having an identical geometry with one having a gain coefficient and the other a loss coefficient, identical in magnitude, to form a PT-symmetric OEO that support single-frequency oscillation, are implemented. The tuning of the frequency is realized by thermally tuning the MDR. Experimental results show a microwave signal with a frequency that is tunable from 2 to 12 GHz is realized. The phase noise of the generated microwave signal at a frequency of 11.5 GHz is -117.3 dBc/Hz at a 10-kHz frequency offset. The use of a photonic integrated microdisk resonator makes the entire PT symmetric system have high potential for full photonic integration.

Abstract:A widely frequency-tunable parity-time (PT)-symmetric optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on a silicon microdisk resonator (MDR) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed OEO, two mutually coupled optoelectronic loops having an identical geometry with one having a gain and the other a loss, which are equal in magnitude, are implemented by employing the reciprocity of light propagation in an MDR, to form a PT-symmetric OEO. Thanks to the PT symmetry, single-frequency oscillation with low phase noise is implemented. The tuning of the frequency is realized by thermally tuning the MDR. The proposed OEO is demonstrated experimentally. A wide frequency tunable range from 2 to 12 GHz is realized. The phase noise is measured to be -105 dBc/Hz at a 10 kHz frequency offset, which can be further reduced if the loop length is increased.

Abstract:An optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is a time delay oscillator (TDO) that uses photonics technology to provide the long delay required to generate pristine microwave carriers. Parity-time (PT) symmetry concepts applied to an OEO offer the potential to achieve combined low phase noise and high sidemode suppression. A TDO composed of a pair of identical ring resonators coupled by a 2x2 coupler is modelled, and the coupler transmission matrix required for the oscillator to be PT- symmetric is derived. In a first configuration, the coupler is interpreted as the composition of a gain/loss block and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) block. In practice, there are excess losses that must be compensated by a special dual amplifier with saturation characteristics compatible with PT- symmetry. The PT- symmetry phase transition determined by the gain/loss and the MZI differential phase parameters is found to be global and not local in its effect on modes. This is resolved by placing a short delay line within one arm of the MZI resulting in a frequency dependent and hence local mode-selective PT- symmetry phase transition. In addition, it is demonstrated that the first configuration may be transformed into a second but equivalent configuration as a cross-injection dual TDO with imbalanced delays. The local PT- symmetry phase transition may then be understood in terms of the Vernier effect. Advantageously, the second configuration enables the special dual amplifier to be replaced by a pair of matched but otherwise independent amplifiers. Thereby, the second configuration is amenable to practical implementation as a dual OEO using standard RF-photonic and RF-electronic components. The theory is validated by complex envelope model simulations using Simulink and phase model analytic results evaluated using MATLAB. There is excellent agreement between the theoretical and simulation results.

Abstract:An electrically tunable frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) with operation based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and phase modulation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this OEO configuration, the phase modulator in combination with an optical filter is employed to produce a frequency-doubling microwave signal, while the SBS effect provides the narrowband filtering and ensures the oscillation of the feedback driving signal at the fundamental frequency. By varying the Brillouin pump signal obtained from double-sideband-carrier-suppression modulation, the frequency tunability is realized. In our experiment, a continuous tunable frequency-doubling signal from 21.4 to 25 GHz is generated when the tuning signal applied to the intensity modulator is tuned from 200 MHz to 2 GHz.

Abstract:A novel realization of a tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) and two tunable microwave phase shifters (PS) is experimentally demonstrated. By adjusting the time delay of the microwave signal which is sent to two radio frequency (RF) ports of DPMZM, the center frequency of the multiband microwave photonics filter (MMPF) can be tuned. When the OEO feedback loop is closed, single-frequency microwave signals with a tuning range from 3.6 to 15.6 GHz are generated. The side mode suppression ratio is 67 dB, and the phase noise is measured to be - 104 dBc/Hz when the oscillation frequency is 9.2 GHz. The frequency drift is less than 24 kHz in 1600 s without phase-locked or compensation devices.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a voltage-controlled frequency-tunable optoelectronic oscillator based on a dispersion-induced microwave photonic filter (MPF), which is implemented with a carrier phase-shifted double sideband modulation in a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM), a linear chirped fiber Bragg grating and a polarization multiplexed composite cavity. By simply adjusting the DC bias voltage of the DPMZM, the central frequency of the dispersion-induced MPF is shifted and the oscillation frequency of optoelectronic oscillator can be tuned. A detail theoretical analysis is provided, which is validated by a proof of concept experiment.

Abstract:Parity–time (PT) symmetry has been intensively exploited in optoelectronic oscillators (OEOs), enabling mode selection in mutually coupled feedback loops. However, two mutually coupled feedback loops are usually established to achieve a spatial PT-symmetric architecture, which increases system complexity and instability. Here, we propose and experimentally prove a PT-symmetric OEO based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). The PT symmetry is implemented in an overlapping spatial loop in which the gain and loss are realized based on SBS gain and SBS loss, respectively. By adjusting the pump power and the polarization states of the probe and pump lights, the gain and loss can be balanced, thus achieving stable single-mode oscillation. In experiment, a 9.66 GHz microwave signal with a side-mode suppression ratio of 41 dB is generated. At 10 kHz offset frequency, the single-sideband phase noise reaches as low as −120.1 dBc/Hz. This demonstration opens new avenues to enhance mode selectivity in an OEO and can potentially be integrated on a chip.

Abstract:A wideband frequency-tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on a narrowband phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PSFBG) and wavelength tuning of the laser is proposed and demonstrated. With assistance of an optical single-sideband modulator, the PSFBG with a narrow transmission peak acts like an equivalent high-Q microwave filter to select the oscillation frequency. Frequency tunability of the OEO can be simply realized by tuning the wavelength of a laser source. An X-band optoelectronic oscillating signal with frequency tunable at wide range from 8.4 to 11.8 GHz is generated and its performance is investigated in the experiment.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a frequency tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on a spectral-subtraction-induced microwave photonic filter (MPF), which is implemented by a subtraction operation of transmission responses between two high-pass filters of different cutoff frequency. By changing the bandwidth of a tunable optical filter or the wavelengths of two laser sources, the central frequency of the synthesized single-pass MPF is shifted and the oscillation frequency of OEO can be tuned. In the experiment, frequency-tunable oscillation signals from 7.8 to 14.2 GHz at a step of ~ 1.25 GHz are generated and its performance is investigated.

Abstract:An optically tunable frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (FD-OEO) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and carrier phase-shifted double sideband (CPS-DSB) modulation is proposed and demonstrated. SBS effect provides narrowband filtering for the OEO to generate an oscillation signal with frequency equal to the Brillouin frequency shift, while a CPS-DSB modulation by using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator is implemented to double the oscillation frequency. Owing to the wavelength-dependent Brillouin frequency shift, frequency tunability is realized by tuning the wavelength of the laser source. In the experiments, frequency-doubling microwave signals from 18.38 to 18.74 GHz are generated when the wavelength of the laser source is tuned from 1565 to 1535 nm.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a multifunctional optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) mainly composed of a phase modulator in tandem with a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator. Simultaneous operations of low-phase-noise ultra-flat optical frequency comb (OFC) generation, prescaled electrical clock (EC) recovery, and error-free fourfold demultiplexing of an injected 4 x 25-Gb/s optical time-division multiplexing differential phase-shift keying signal are achieved with the proposed OEO. The generated nine-tone OFC has a flatness within 0.7 dB. The timing jitters of optical and EC signals are 117 and 112 fs, respectively.

Abstract:An optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) with a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG) is proposed and demonstrated in this letter. The PS-FBG acts as a high Q dual-bandpass optical filter and therefore the need of long fiber and narrow-band microwave filter in the OEO loop is eliminated. The PS-FBG is a fiber-based optical component, which makes the structure compact. Tunability of the proposed OEO is also investigated.

Abstract:A simple realization of frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) using a phase modulator and a chirp fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this OEO configuration, the phase modulator in combination with an optical filter is working as doubled-sideband phase modulation to produce a frequency-doubling microwave signal, while the CFBG ensures the oscillation of feedback driving signal at fundamental frequency by converting the phase-modulated signal to intensity-modulated signal. As a result, a self-oscillating fundamental microwave signal at 8 GHz and frequency-doubled microwave signal at 16 GHz are simultaneously obtained.

Abstract:A widely tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on a broadband phase modulator and a tunable optical bandpass filter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A tunable range from 4.74 to 38.38 GHz is realized by directly tuning the bandwidth of the optical bandpass filter. To the best of our knowledge, this is the widest fundamental frequency tunable range ever achieved by an OEO. The phase noise performance of the generated signal is also investigated. The single-sideband phase noise is below -120 dBc/Hz at an offset of 10 KHz within the whole tunable range.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian photonics based on parity-time (PT) symmetry has been considered an effective solution to achieve mode selection for optical or microwave single-mode oscillation. A PT-symmetric system is usually implemented using two mutually coupled elements with identical geometry or a single element based on precise longitudinal refractive index modulation. In this study, we propose a novel scheme to achieve PT symmetry based on polarization mode manipulation in a single optical loop. By controlling the polarization states of two light waves that are propagating along the clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) directions in the single optical loop, two equivalent mutually-coupled loops with identical geometry and a balanced gain and loss are formed. Based on this concept, a wavelength-tunable single-mode fiber laser with a sub-kHz linewidth is realized. The tunability is achieved by thermally tuning the wavelength of an integrated microdisk resonator (MDR) incorporated in the optical loop. Experimental results show that a continuously tunable single-mode laser with a sub-kHz linewidth of 640 Hz and a wavelength tuning range from 1552.953 to 1554.147 nm is realized. The key advantages of using a single optical loop to implement PT symmetry include greatly simplified implementation and highly improved stability. The demonstration opens new avenues to implement high-performance PT-symmetric systems for applications in photonic and microwave photonic systems.
