Abstract:Because of serious environmental pollutions, the detection of hazardous and explosive nitro-aromatic compounds using metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has been a promising research field in the current scenario. Here, we report a new fluorescent MOF, [Zn2(TCPE)(tta)2]·2DMF·4H2O·2Me2NH2+ (HNU-34, H4TCPE = 1,1,2,2-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)ethylene, 1H-tta = 1H-tetrazole), which possesses a three-dimensional configuration and one-dimensional channels along the c-axis. It can serve as a luminescence sensor for the detection of nitrophenol explosives through different quenching effects, especially for mononitrophenol and dinitrophenol. The detection limits of 2,6-dinitrophenol and trinitrophenol are 29.45 and 36.15 nM, respectively, which are among the high level of the reported MOF sensors, especially for dinitrophenol.

Abstract:Rapid and real-time detection of 2, 4, 6-trinitrophenol (TNP) is of great importance for the living environment and human health. Herein, we constructed an innovative ratiometric fluorescence imprinted sensor with fast response and high selectivity based on magnesium and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (Mg, N-CDs) and chromium telluride quantum dots (r-CdTe) self-assembled in zirconium-based metal organic frameworks (UiO-66) combined with imprinted polymers for the detection of TNP. In the protocol, the introduction of UiO-66 with large specific surface area and porosity using as carrier material significantly enhanced the mass transfer rate, which improved the sensitivity of the Mg, N-CDs/r-CdTe@UiO-66@MIP (LHU@MIP). And the Mg, N-CDs with high quantum yields and r-CdTe were selected as fluorescence emitting elements to yield fluorescence signal, achieving signal amplification. The dual-channel strategy enabled the sensor to not only display a fast fluorescence response, but also generate a dual-response signal under the action of internal filtering effect (IFE). Combining these advantages, the LHU@MIP had a wide linear range (1–100 μM), good detection sensitivity (0.56 μM), and a distinct color change (from blue to pink). Meanwhile, for accurate on-site analysis, we designed a portable smart sensing platform with a color recognizer application. The smartphone enabled visual sensing of TNP by capturing fluorescent images and converting them into digital values. More importantly, the platform was successfully utilized for the analysis of TNP in the simulated actual samples with considerable results. Therefore, the developed platform was characterized by low cost, portability, ideal specificity, and provided a strategy for on-site monitoring of TNP.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) fluorescent materials have significant advantages in detecting organic pollutants and metal ion pollution. A zinc metal organic framework nanofiber fluorescent membrane (Zn(Eu)MOF@PAN NFM) was prepared by doping the lanthanide metal Eu using an electrospinning and impregnation process. The structure and morphology of the membrane was characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR and XPS. The results show that the membrane has good fluorescence performance and can successfully and efficiently detect nitrobenzene (NB; detection limit = 0.861 ppm, Ksv = 0.143 ppm- 1), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP; detection limit = 0.631 ppm, Ksv = 0.178 ppm- 1), benzaldehyde (BA; detection limit = 0.981 ppm, Ksv = 0.051 ppm-1) and Fe3+ ions (detection limit = 3.418 ppm, Ksv = 3.210x10- 3 ppm-1) in solution. In terms of repeatability and stability, the test results are obviously better than the property of the powder.
A Highly Efficient Fluorescent Sensor Based on AIEgen for Detection of Nitrophenolic Explosives

Abstract:The detection of nitrophenolic explosives is important in counterterrorism and environmental protection, but it is still a challenge to identify the nitroaromatic compounds among those with a similar structure. Herein, a simple tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivative with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics was synthesized and used as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of nitrophenolic explosives (2, 4, 6-trinitrophenol, TNP and 2, 4-dinitrophenol, DNP) in water solution and in a solid state with a high selectivity. Meanwhile, it was found that only hydroxyl containing nitrophenolic explosives caused obvious fluorescence quenching. The sensing mechanism was investigated by using fluorescence titration and 1H NMR spectra. This simple AIE-active probe can potentially be applied to the construction of portable detection devices for explosives.

Abstract:There has been an investigation to detect nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) using fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). However, the vagueness of the sensing mechanism has hindered the development of efficient sensors. Here we have explored a two-dimensional (2D) MOF, Zr-BTB nanosheets, as a rapid (as short as 10 s), sensitive, and selective sensor for low-concentration 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP); its limit of detection for 2,4-DNP was quantified to be as low as 0.013 μM (2.40 ppb). The molecular sensing mechanism and the specific site were investigated using FTIR, UV-vis absorption, XPS, and 2D ssNMR spectroscopy and combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work presents insight into florescence-quenching mechanisms for the sensitive sensing of NACs at the molecule level, which may provide valuable ideas for designing novel MOF sensors for NACs detection.

Abstract:A newly developed electrospun nanofibrous film sensor based on tetrakis(4-methoxylphenyl) porphyrin (TMOPP) and polystyrene showed favorable fluorescence sensing performance towards four nitroaromatic explosives. The morphology of nanofibers was uniform with diameters of 300-400 nm. The sensing nanofibrous film possessed satisfactory reproducibility amongst three batches, reversibility with loss of sensing signal only similar to 10% after six quenching-regeneration cycles, and selectivity to give minimal response to common interferents. Using amine modification as a new approach and by introducing a porogen, the nanofibrous film sensor exhibited a highly sensitive response towards parts-per-billion levels of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene vapor, and parts-per-trillion levels of picric acid vapor, respectively. This work provides a facile and promising strategy to construct portable optical devices for nitroaromatic explosive detection.

Abstract:A new three-dimensional luminescence Zn-MOF sensor with the molecular formula [Zn-4(mu(3)-OH)(2)(ptptc)(1.5) (DMA)(H2O)(2)]center dot 2DMA (complex 1) for the selective sensing of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (2,4-DNPH), picric acid (PA), La3+ and Ca2+ has been synthesized from terphenyl-3,3', 5,5'-tetracarboxylic acid (H(4)ptptc) and zinc nitrate under solvothermal conditions. XRD analysis reveals that complex 1 crystallizes in monoclinic system P2(1)/n space group and consists of a three-dimensional network with one-dimensional channels, which are expected to facilitate the diffusion, concentration and detection processes. Real-time fluorescence quenching responses and good reversibility were observed in the fluorescence titration experiments with nano-molar scale detection limits for 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (2,4-DNPH, 100 nM) and picric acid (PA, 500 nM). Noticeable emission band shift from 365 nm to 420 nm was observed when treated complex 1 with La3+ and a new emission band centered at 475 nm appeared when treated complex 1 with Ca2+ in the metal ions sensing experiments. In virtue of its high selectively, good sensitively and recyclability complex 1 could be a promising fluorescent sensor for explosives and metal ions. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) is widely present in the ecological environment and has great harmful effects on humans, so it is necessary to detect DNPH in environmental samples. Chitosan, the second abundant renewable biological material in natural, has the advantages of wide sources, good biodegradability and good biocompatibility. Naphthalimide is a kind of classical fluorophore and has widely applications in fluorescent probe field. In this paper, a new fluorescent probe CTS-NA-OAc for DNPH detection was developed, which was constructed by using chitosan as skeleton and naphthalimide as the fluorophore. This probe displayed a highly specific "turn-off" fluorescence response toward DNPH, accompanied by the fluorescence color change from green to colorless. Its detection limit for DNPH was calculated to be 4.9×10−7 M and much lower than that of the corresponding model compound NA-OAc. The interference experiments showed that other competing analytes have no influence on the detection of DNPH in a complex environment. In addition, the coordination mechanism of CTS-NA-OAc with DNPH was investigated by 1H NMR titration and DFT calculations. Inspired by the above prominent performances, the probe CTS-NA-OAc was successfully applied to the detection of DNPH in real water and soil samples.

Abstract:In recent years, due to the abuse of antibiotics, nitro explosives and pesticides, which have caused great harm to the environment and human health, social concerns have prompted researchers to develop more sensitive detection platforms for these pollutants. In this paper, a novel two-dimensional Zn (II) coordination polymer, [Zn(L)0.5(1,2-bimb)]·DMF (1), [H4L=[1,1':4',1''-terphenyl]-2, 2'',4, 4'' -tetracarboxylic acid, 1,2-bimb = 1,2-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene] was synthesized using a hydro-solvothermal method. Among commonly used organic solvents, 1 exhibits significant stability. Fast and efficient fluorescence response can be achieved for tetracycline (TET), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), fluazinam (FLU), and abamectin benzoate (AMB) with low detection limits. A binary intelligent logic gate device with FLU and AMB as chemical input signals is successfully constructed, which provides a new idea for biochemical detection. In addition, a portable visual test paper has been prepared, which has high sensitivity, good selectivity, and simple operation. It can be used for rapid detection of pollutants in daily life and has broad application prospects. Finally, a detailed discussion was conducted on the fluorescence sensing mechanism of 1 for detecting TET, 4-NP, AMB and FLU.
A dual-response ratiometric fluorescence imprinted sensor based on metal-organic frameworks for ultrasensitive visual detection of 4-nitrophenol in environments

Abstract:A dual-response ratiometric fluorescence imprinted sensor based on visible/near-infrared emission was established for ultrasensitive, selective and visual detection 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The molecularly imprinted polymer was incorporated in the ratiometric sensing system consisting of visible emission carbon dots@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (CDs@ZIF-8) and near-infrared emission cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots. The CDs@ZIF-8 enhanced the emission of CDs and the fluorescence sensing performance. Compared to short wavelength of fluorophore, the near-infrared emission CdTe is less interference caused by auto-fluorescence of sample. The ratiometric fluorescence imprinted sensor exhibited dual response for 4-NP at 420 nm and 703 nm and a wide concentration response range. Moreover, a good linear response was existed in the two concentration ranges of 0.1 pM-3.0 pM and 0.05 μM-30 μM with the detection limit of 0.08 pM and 0.05 μΜ, respectively. Significantly, the fluorescence color changes can be observed from purple to pink to red with the naked eye. The fluorescence quenching mechanism of the ratimetric fluorescence imprinted sensor was discussed in detail. The ratiometric fluorescence imprinted sensor was used to detect 4-NP in various real samples with satisfactory recoveries of 97.5-106.3%, which provided an interesting avenue for the rapid detection of pollutant with high sensitivity, high selectivity and visualization in real environment.

Abstract:Nitrophenol is a common industrial intermediate with a potential threat to human health. Luminescent metal–organic frameworks (LMOFs) make it possible to detect nitrophenol rapidly and sensitively, but this method still suffers from the confusion of nitrophenol analogs and the lack of portability. In this paper, by loading two lanthanide metal ions Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ into mixed-ligand LMOF Uio-66-(COOH) 2 /NDC, a multiple-emissive luminescent sensor array for three nitrophenol isomers was obtained. Through the diverse response of the three luminescence centers to the three nitrophenol isomers and the linear discriminant analysis method, nanoscale Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ @Uio-66-(COOH) 2 /NDC exhibits excellent capability to recognize three nitrophenol isomers at concentrations ranging from 40 to 100 μM, distinguish binary or ternary mixtures at 60 μM and achieve semi-quantification in concentrations ranging from 0 to 80 μM. Furthermore, as a proof of concept, a film-based array sensor is prepared by doping Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ @Uio-66-(COOH) 2 /NDC nanoparticles in sodium alginate hydrogel, which shows excellent portability and optical stability while maintaining the distinguishing performance to nitrophenol. Considering the diversity of LMOFs and hydrogels, the strategy of constructing the MOF/hydrogel film-based array sensor is expected to provide new ideas for the distinction of more analogs and make the application of LMOFs in real life full of possibilities.

Abstract:Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) as an efficient and convenient sensing material for environmental pollutants have attracted widespread attention in recent years. Here in, we synthesized a series of lanthanide co‐doping MOFs, EuxTb1‐x‐MOFs (x=0, 0.005, 0.00667, 0.01, 0.02 and 1) under solvothermal conditions. The luminescence colors can be adjusted by changing metal molar mass ratios and altering excitation wavelength. Fortunately, a near white‐light‐emitting material Eu0.01Tb0.99‐MOF was obtained under the excitation at 350 nm, whose CIE coordinates of (0.3444, 0.3409) are very close to standard white light coordinates (0.3333, 0.3333). We further studied the fluorescence sensing performances of Eu‐MOF, Tb‐MOF and Eu0.01Tb0.99‐MOF towards NACs. The results indicate that all MOFs can selectively detect 4‐nitroaniline, 4‐nitrophenol and 2‐nitrophenol with good sensitivity and recyclability.

Highly Stable Luminescent Metal–Organic Frameworks for Ultrasensitive Detection of Nitroaniline Isomers: Application in In Situ Imaging of Toxic Pesticides

Abstract:A powerful and promising route for developing chemically stable luminescent sensors for visible sensing of toxic pesticides in water and actual food samples is presented. Herein, a novel twofold interpenetrated luminescent metal–organic framework (MOF), Cd-TM, is prepared by incorporating 2-methyl-1H-imidazole-5-carbaldehyde as the imidazole-containing tridentate coordination linker and the luminescent organic bridging linker 4,4′,4″-tricarboxyltriphenylamine (H3tca) into a framework. Thanks to the imidazole coordination and structurally interpenetrated nature, the MOF exhibits high fluorescence stability and water stability up to 6 months. Fluorescence titration experiments reveal that Cd-TM shows rapid and ultrasensitive fluorescence response to p-nitroaniline compared with other nitroanilines with the limit of detection of about 8 nM. In particular, the Cd-TM material also shows high sensitivity to detect dicloran (DCN, 2,6-dichloro-4-nitroaniline) pesticides with the structure similar to that of p-NA. The detection limit is 7.6 nM, which is found to be superior to those of the recently reported MOF-based sensors. In addition, the detection mechanism of DCN is studied by FT-IR analysis, SEM/EDX elemental mapping, XPS, and theoretical calculations. Practically, the recoveries of spiked environmental samples were found to be satisfactory (95.8–106.4%). Further, Cd-TM is also used for the rapid in situ nondestructive imaging detection of pesticide residues in simulated fresh agricultural products. These results indicate that Cd-TM has the potential to detect organophosphorus pesticide contamination with rapid in situ imaging via easy-to-read visual signals.

Abstract:The authors describe a fast response-recovery characteristics of optical sensing platform based on a luminescent thin film composed of a nano-flake metal organic framework (MOF) of the type [Eu4(NDC)6(H2O)5]·3H2O (referred to as Eu-NDC), where NDC stands for naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylate. The film can be prepared within 20 s and shows strong luminescence (with excitation/emission maxima at 355/614 nm) that is characteristic for Eu(III) ion sensitized by the electron-rich ligands. The structure of the MOF films is confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, and their surface morphology is examined by scanning electron microscopy. The luminescence of the sensor film is strongly quenched by picric acid (PA), and this finding is exploited in a sensing scheme for PA with good selectivity over other nitroaromatic explosives. The limit of detection for PA is 0.67 μM. The luminescence quenching mechanisms were also investigated. The sensor is easily prepared, stable, and can be recycled by rinsing with water. Abstract:2,4,6-Trinitrophenol (TNP) is an important chemical and widely applied in industry. However, on account of its high toxicity, flammability and explosive nature, just trace amounts of TNP may cause potential threats to ecosystem and human security, so it is significant to establish a rapid and reliable method for the detection of TNP. Herein, a novel amphiphilic fluorescent probe TPE-CD was successfully designed and synthesized by the functionalization of hydrophilic β-cyclodextrin with a hydrophobic Aggregation Induced Emission (AIE) fluorophore. Moreover, spherical nanoparticles formed in H2O/CH3OH solution with the increase of water fraction (fw). Fluorescence titration of TNP indicated that TPE-CD exhibited excellent sensitivity to TNP with LOD = 0.31 μmol L−1 and Ksv = 3.06×104 L mol−1. The introduced β-cyclodextrin remarkably enhanced the ability of TPE-CD rather than its precursor TPE-COOH to capture TNP molecules through forming spherical nanoparticles, improving the fluorescence quenching efficiency. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results confirmed that the response mechanism of TPE-CD to TNP involved Photoinduced Electron Transfer (PET) and Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) with PET being predominant. Furthermore, the probe showed excellent selectivity and anti-interference to aqueous TNP samples. Moreover, the test strips prepared by soaking in TPE-CD solution also exhibited good sensitivity to TNP, providing a convenient, rapid and reliable method for the detection of TNP.

Abstract:One of the effective ways to prevent environmental pollutants from entering the human body and causing cancer is to detect them efficiently and sensitively in the external environment, even trace detection. Herein, we developed a rare Eu(II)-MOF (Eu(II)-Phen) as near infrared (NIR) probe to construct high instantaneous anodic electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for trace detection of environmental pollutants. Eu(II)-Phen was synthesized by the reductant of glycine and the protectant of oleylamine, which avoided using a large amount of inert gas to prevent Eu2+ from oxidizing into Eu3+. The Eu(II)-Phen possessed high-efficiency ECL with the aid of tripropylamine (TPA) coreactant, which was certified by DFT, electrochemical and ECL characterization. Then, the double enhancement mechanism prompted the ECL efficiency to enhance: i) the high energy transfer efficiency brought from the antenna effect of ligand to Eu2+, ii) the faster and more generation of coreactant radical (TPA(center dot)) catalyzed by Fe3O4-Ag NRs. Moreover, under NIR emission, the constructed ECL sensor with Eu(II)-Phen can work stably in the harsh environment such as heavy pollution. Given its high instantaneous luminous efficiency, NIR emission, self-enhancement and designable merits, the constructed ECL sensor represents a promising practical platform for trace environmental monitoring to prevent pollutants from attacking the human body.
Eu Doped Zn-Mofs Nanofiber Fluorescent Membrane and Its Multifunctional Detection of Nitrobenzene, 4-Nitrophenol, Benzaldehyde and Fe 3+

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) fluorescent materials have significant advantages in detecting organic pollutants and metal ion pollution. Zinc metal organic framework nanofiber fluorescent membrane(Zn(Eu)-MOFs@PAN NFMs) is prepared of doping lanthanide metal Eu by electrospinning and impregnation process. The structure and morphology of the membrane is characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR and XPS. The results show that the membrane has good fluorescence performance, and can successfully and efficiently detect nitrobenzene (NB, detection limit, 0.861 ppm; Ksv= 0.143 ppm-1), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP, detection limit, 0.631 ppm; Ksv= 0.178 ppm-1), benzaldehyde (BA, detection limit, 0.981 ppm; Ksv= 0.051 ppm-1) and Fe3+ (detection limit, 3.418 ppm; Ksv= 3.210×10-3 ppm-1) in solution. In terms of repeatability and stability, the test results are obviously better than the powder test results.
Dye@Bio-Mof-1 Composite As A Dual-Emitting Platform for Enhanced Detection of A Wide Range of Explosive Molecules

Abstract:By incorporating a cationic dye within a metal-organic framework (MOF) through an ion-exchange process, a responsive dye@bio-MOF-1 composite has been synthesized, serving as a dual-emitting platform for enhanced detection of different kinds of nitro-explosives, especially nitroalkanes, nitramines, and nitrate esters. The dye@bio-MOF-1 composite was constructed with free amines on their well-defined cavities, which is essential for the capture of explosives into their confined nanospace. It was observed that the encapsulation of explosives into the constructed dye@bio-MOF-1 composite could dramatically alter the luminescent properties of the dyes as well as the MOF skeletons owing to the size exclusivity and confinement-induced effect. For nitroaromatics, the dye@bio-MOF-1 composite exhibits turn-off responses via fluorescence quenching. Unexpectedly, the composite shows unique turn-on responses for aliphatic nitro-organics via confinement-induced enhancement, demonstrating enhanced ability to detecting different kinds of explosives selectively in aqueous solution. Furthermore, the dye@bio-MOF-1 film was facilely fabricated, making the chemical sensing more convenient and easier to realize the discrimination of the targeted explosives. The dual tunable responses indicate that dye@bio-MOF-1 composites are favorable materials for molecular sensing. On the basis of the host-guest properties of the constructed dye@bio-MOF-1 composite, our work can be further extended to sensing specific analytes with remarkable turn-on sensing properties, in particular those difficult to recognize with conventional methods.

Abstract:Developing a fluorescence sensor capable of precisely identifying highly toxic nerve agents has become a focus of research, given that they are easily available and can be used by terrorists to threaten the security of the world. In this work, we designed a ratiometric fluorescence sensing platform with Cu 2+ -modified UiO-66-NH 2 (Cu 2+ @UiO-66-NH 2 ) and o-phenenediamine (OPD) as signal indicators and successfully used for the liquid and gas detection of the nerve agent simulant diethyl chlorophosphate (DCP). UiO-66-NH 2 obtained oxidase activity by simple Cu 2+ modification, which catalyzed the oxidation of OPD to give a yellow fluorescent product 2, 3-diaminophenazine (DAP). In this detection system, the fluorescence of UiO-66-NH 2 was greatly enhanced by blocking the ligand metal charge transfer (LMCT) process inside the framework by DCP. At the same time, the amino group of DAP was phosphorylated by DCP, and the attenuation of DAP fluorescence was observed by the static quenching effect. In addition, the Cu 2+ @UiO-66-NH 2 /OPD loaded agarose hydrogel device can be used to detect DCP vapor with naked eyes and showed satisfactory detection result (LOD: 6.65 ppb).

Abstract:A new Cd-MOF with 2D topology, [Cd(1,4-ndc)(DMA)] (1,4-H2ndc = 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic, DMA = N,N'-Dimethylacetamide), was successfully fabricated under a solvothemal condition and further characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, infrared spectrometry (IR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Cd-MOF can serve as a luminescent sensor for the detection of nitro explosives and organophosphorus pesticides (OPs), with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.1 μM for nitrobenzene and 3 nM for parathion-methyl. Meanwhile, Cd-MOF can still keep stable after detecting nitro explosives and OPs for ten cycles. On the whole, Cd-MOF shows good stability, high selectivity and superior reproducibility as a multifunctional luminescent sensor.
