Abstract:MRI technology has been widely used in brain connectivity analysis to explore the neurobiological mechanism of ASD. Analysis of brain structural connectivity found atypical growth and development in patients with ASD, excessive growth in infancy, and excessive decline in functions from adolescence to middle age. Functional connectivity analysis suggests that default mode network (DMN) may be related to theory of mind (ToM) and self-referential processing, abnormal salience network (SN) connections can lead to social communication disorders, and abnormal reward network (RN) may be related to repetitive and restricted behaviors. Effective connectivity analysis found that information transmission between brain regions was abnormal in ASD patients, which was associated with social dysfunction. This article introduces the latest development of MRI research, and discusses the differences between ASD patients and normal human brain connections, so as to provide theoretical reference for further investigations of the neural activity mechanism of ASD patients.
Altered Inter‐ and Intrahemispheric Functional Connectivity Dynamics in Autistic Children

Abstract:Emerging evidence has associated autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with static functional connectivity abnormalities between multiple brain regions. However, the temporal dynamics of intra- and interhemispheric functional connectivity patterns remain unknown in ASD. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were analyzed for 105 ASD and 102 demographically matched typically developing control (TC) children (age range: 7-12 years) available from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange database. Whole-brain functional connectivity was decomposed into ipsilateral and contralateral functional connectivity, and sliding-window analysis was utilized to capture the intra- and interhemispheric dynamic functional connectivity density (dFCD) patterns. The temporal variability of the functional connectivity dynamics was further quantified using the standard deviation (SD) of intra- and interhemispheric dFCD across time. Finally, a support vector regression model was constructed to assess the relationship between abnormal dFCD variance and autism symptom severity. Both intra- and interhemispheric comparisons showed increased dFCD variability in the anterior cingulate cortex/medial prefrontal cortex and decreased variability in the fusiform gyrus/inferior temporal gyrus in autistic children compared with TC children. Autistic children additionally showed lower intrahemispheric dFCD variability in sensorimotor regions including the precentral/postcentral gyrus. Moreover, aberrant temporal variability of the contralateral dFCD predicted the severity of social communication impairments in autistic children. These findings demonstrate altered temporal dynamics of the intra- and interhemispheric functional connectivity in brain regions incorporating social brain network of ASD, and highlight the potential role of abnormal interhemispheric communication dynamics in neural substrates underlying impaired social processing in ASD.

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder whose core deficit is social dysfunction. Previous studies have indicated that structural changes in white matter are associated with autism spectrum disorder. However, few studies have explored the alteration of the large-scale white-matter functional networks in autism spectrum disorder. Here, we identified ten white-matter functional networks on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data using the K-means clustering algorithm. Compared with the white matter and white-matter functional network connectivity of the healthy controls group, we found significantly decreased white matter and white-matter functional network connectivity mainly located within the Occipital network, Middle temporo-frontal network, and Deep network in autism spectrum disorder. Compared with healthy controls, findings from white-matter gray-matter functional network connectivity showed the decreased white-matter gray-matter functional network connectivity mainly distributing in the Occipital network and Deep network. Moreover, we compared the spontaneous activity of white-matter functional networks between the two groups. We found that the spontaneous activity of Middle temporo-frontal and Deep network was significantly decreased in autism spectrum disorder. Finally, the correlation analysis showed that the white matter and white-matter functional network connectivity between the Middle temporo-frontal network and others networks and the spontaneous activity of the Deep network were significantly correlated with the Social Responsiveness Scale scores of autism spectrum disorder. Together, our findings indicate that changes in the white-matter functional networks are associated behavioral deficits in autism spectrum disorder.

Abstract:Neuroimaging studies have shown that autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) may be associated with abnormalities in brain structures and functions at rest as well as during cognitive tasks. However, it remains unclear if functional connectivity (FC) of all brain neural networks is also changed in these subjects. In this study, we acquired functional magnetic resonance imaging scans from 93 children with ASD and 79 matched healthy subjects. Group independent component analysis was executed for all of the participants to estimate FC. One-sample t-tests were then performed to obtain the networks for each group. Group differences in the different brain networks were tested using two-sample t-tests. Finally, relationships between abnormal FC and clinical variables were investigated with Pearson's correlation analysis. The results from one-sample t-tests revealed nine networks with similar spatial patterns in these two groups. When compared with the controls, children with ASD showed increased connectivity in the right dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus and left middle frontal gyrus (MFG) within the occipital pole network. Children with ASD also showed decreased connectivity in the left gyrus rectus, left middle occipital gyrus, right angular gyrus, right MFG and right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), orbital part within the lateral visual network (LVN), the left IFG, right precuneus, and right angular gyrus within the left frontoparietal (cognition) network. Furthermore, the mean FC values within the LVN showed significant positive correlations with total score of the Childhood Autism Rating Scale. Our findings indicate that abnormal FC extensively exists within some networks in children with ASD. This abnormal FC may constitute a biomarker of ASD. Our results are an important contribution to the study of neuropathophysiological mechanisms in children with ASD.
Altered Developmental Trajectories in Intrinsic Function between Default, Salience, and Executive Networks in High-Functioning Autism

Abstract:Although many studies have focused on abnormal patterns of brain functional connectivity in Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), one important factor, the developmental effect of brain networks was largely overlooked. To clarify the abnormal developmental trajectory of brain functional connectivity in ASD, we focused on the age-related changes in three core neurocognitive networks: default mode network (DMN), salience network (SN) and central executive network (CEN, also divided into left and right CEN, i.e., lCEN and rCEN). The development of intrinsic functional connectivity (iFC) within and between these networks were analyzed in 107 Chinese participants, including children, adolescents, and adults (54 patients with ASD and 53 typically developed (TD) participants; ages 6-30 years). We found that diagnosis-related distinctions in age-related changes suggest three maturation patterns in networks9 or nodes9 iFC: delayed (iFC between SN and rCEN), ectopic (iFC between SN and DMN, and iFC between posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and right anterior insula/dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC)), and failure maturation (iFC between dACC and ventral medial prefrontal cortex). Compared with age-matched TD participants, ASD patients in children and adolescents exhibited hypo-connectivity, while that in adults showed hyper-connectivity. In addition, an independent verification based on Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE) datasets confirmed our findings of developmental trajectories in ASD group, which also showed unchanged functional connectivity with age between DMN and SN and increasing iFC between rCEN and SN. The conspicuous differences in the development of three core networks in ASD were demonstrated, which may lead a nuanced understanding towards the abnormal brain network maturation trajectory of autism.

Functional data were preprocessed and analyzed using harmonized protocols, and brain module dynamics was assessed using a multilayer network model. We further leveraged postmortem brain-wide gene expression data to identify transcriptomic signatures associated with ASD-related alterations in brain dynamics.RESULTS: Compared with healthy control participants, individuals with ASD exhibited a higher global mean and lower standard deviation of whole-brain module dynamics, indicating an unstable and less regionally differentiated pattern. More specifically, individuals with ASD showed higher module switching, primarily in the medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate gyrus, and angular gyrus, and lower switching in the visual regions. These alterations in brain dynamics were predictive of social impairments in individuals with ASD and were linked with expression profiles of genes primarily involved in the regulation of neurotransmitter transport and secretion as well as with previously identified autism-related genes.CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first to identify consistent alterations in brain network dynamics in ASD and the transcriptomic signatures related to those alterations, furthering insights into the biological basis behind this disorder.

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of neurodevelopmental disorders. Brain mapping has shown that functional brain connections are altered in autism. This study investigated the pattern of brain connection changes in autistic people compared to healthy people. This study aimed to analyze functional abnormalities within the brain due to ASD, using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance images of 26 individuals with ASD and 26 healthy controls were obtained from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE) database. The DPARSF (data processing assistant for resting-state fMRI) toolbox was used for resting-state functional image processing, and features related to functional connections were extracted from these images. Then, the extracted features from both groups were compared using an Independent Two-Sample T Test, and the features with significant differences between the two groups were identified. Compared with healthy controls, individuals with ASD showed hyper-connectivity in the frontal lobe, anterior cingulum, parahippocampal, left precuneus, angular, caudate, superior temporal, and left pallidum, as well as hypo-connectivity in the precentral, left superior frontal, left middle orbitofrontal, right amygdala, and left posterior cingulum. Our findings show that abnormal functional connectivity exists in patients with ASD. This study makes an important advancement in our understanding of the abnormal neurocircuits causing autism.
State-dependent changes of connectivity patterns and functional brain network topology in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract:Anatomical and functional brain studies have converged to the hypothesis that Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are associated with atypical connectivity. Using a modified resting-state paradigm to drive subjects' attention, we provide evidence of a very marked interaction between ASD brain functional connectivity and cognitive state. We show that functional connectivity changes in opposite ways in ASD and typicals as attention shifts from external world towards one's body generated information. Furthermore, ASD subject alter more markedly than typicals their connectivity across cognitive states. Using differences in brain connectivity across conditions, we classified ASD subjects at a performance around 80% while classification based on the connectivity patterns in any given cognitive state were close to chance. Connectivity between the Anterior Insula and dorsal-anterior Cingulate Cortex showed the highest classification accuracy and its strength increased with ASD severity. These results pave the path for diagnosis of mental pathologies based on functional brain networks obtained from a library of mental states.

Alterations of functional connectivities associated with autism spectrum disorder symptom severity: a multi-site study using multivariate pattern analysis

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a highly heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder. The estimation of ASD severity is very important in clinical practice due to providing a more elaborate diagnosis. Although several studies have revealed some resting-state functional connectivities (RSFCs) that are related to the ASD severity, they have all been based on small-sample data and local RSFCs. The aim of the present study is to adopt multivariate pattern analysis to investigate a subset of connectivities among whole-brain RSFCs that are more contributive to ASD severity estimation based on large-sample data. Regression estimation shows a Pearson correlation value of 0.5 between the estimated and observed severity, with a mean absolute error of 1.41. The results provide obvious evidence that some RSFCs undergo notable alterations with the severity of ASD. More importantly, these selected RSFCs have an abnormality in the connection modes of the inter-network and intra-network connections. In addition, these selected abnormal RSFCs are mainly associated with the sensorimotor network, the default mode network, and inter-hemispheric connectivities, while exhibiting significant left hemisphere lateralization. Overall, this study indicates that some RSFCs suffer from abnormal alterations in patients with ASD, providing additional evidence of large-scale functional network alterations in ASD.
Altered dynamic functional connectivity of insular subregions could predict symptom severity of male patients with autism spectrum disorder

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties with social communication and restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior. This disorder was characterized by widespread abnormalities involving distributed brain networks. As one such key network node, the insular cortex has been regarded as a research focus of ASD neuropathology. The insula is a functionally complex brain structure. However, it is not fully clear if dynamic characteristics of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (R-fMRI) signals in insular heterogeneous could be used to depict abnormalities in ASD. To address this question, we investigated dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) of 12 insular subregions. Data were obtained from 44 individuals with ASD and 65 typically developing age-matched controls (TDC). We assessed dFC by sliding-window method and quantified its temporal variability. Multivariable linear regression models were constructed to determine whether dFC support complementary information about symptom severity of individuals with ASD rather than static functional connectivity (sFC). The results showed that individuals with ASD exhibited dFC and sFC alterations in distinct insular subregions. Some brain regions showed only abnormal dFC but not sFC with insular subregions. These abnormal dFC could significantly predict the symptom severity of individuals with ASD. Our findings might advance our knowledge about the potential of insular heterogeneity and dynamic characteristics in understanding the neuropathology mechanism of ASD and in developing neuroimaging biomarkers for clinical applications.

Altered topological properties of white matter structural network in adults with autism spectrum disorder

Abstract:Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability and is currently viewed as a disorder of brain connectivity in which white matter abnormalities. However, the majority of the research to date has focused on children with ASD. Understanding the topological organization of the white matter structural network in adults may help uncover the nature of ASD pathology in adulthood. Method: This study investigated the topological properties of white matter structural network using diffusion tensor imaging and graph theory analysis in a sample of 32 adults with ASD compared to 35 matched typically developing (TD) controls. Group differences in global and nodal topological metrics were compared. The relationships between the altered network metrics and the severity of clinical symptoms were calculated. Results: Compared to TD controls, ASD patients exhibited decreased small-worldness and increased global efficiency. In addition, the reduced nodal efficiency and increased nodal degree were found in the frontal (e.g., the inferior frontal gyrus) and parietal (e.g., postcentral gyrus) regions. Furthermore, the altered topological metrics (e.g., increased global efficiency and reduced nodal efficiency) were correlated with the severity of ASD symptoms. Conclusion: These results indicated that the complicatedly topological organization of the white matter structural network was abnormal and may play an essential role in the underlying pathological mechanism of ASD in adults.
Attenuated effective connectivity of large-scale brain networks in children with autism spectrum disorders

Abstract:Introduction: Understanding the neurological basis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is important for the diagnosis and treatment of this mental disorder. Emerging evidence has suggested aberrant functional connectivity of large-scale brain networks in individuals with ASD. However, whether the effective connectivity which measures the causal interactions of these networks is also impaired in these patients remains unclear. Objects: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effective connectivity of large-scale brain networks in patients with ASD during resting state. Materials and methods: The subjects were 42 autistic children and 127 age-matched normal children from the ABIDE II dataset. We investigated effective connectivity of 7 large-scale brain networks including visual network (VN), default mode network (DMN), cerebellum, sensorimotor network (SMN), auditory network (AN), salience network (SN), frontoparietal network (FPN), with spectral dynamic causality model (spDCM). Parametric empirical Bayesian (PEB) was used to perform second-level group analysis and furnished group commonalities and differences in effective connectivity. Furthermore, we analyzed the correlation between the strength of effective connectivity and patients' clinical characteristics. Results: For both groups, SMN acted like a hub network which demonstrated dense effective connectivity with other large-scale brain network. We also observed significant causal interactions within the "triple networks" system, including DMN, SN and FPN. Compared with healthy controls, children with ASD showed decreased effective connectivity among some large-scale brain networks. These brain networks included VN, DMN, cerebellum, SMN, and FPN. In addition, we also found significant negative correlation between the strength of the effective connectivity from right angular gyrus (ANG_R) of DMN to left precentral gyrus (PreCG_L) of SMN and ADOS-G or ADOS-2 module 4 stereotyped behaviors and restricted interest total (ADOS_G_STEREO_BEHAV) scores. Conclusion: Our research provides new evidence for the pathogenesis of children with ASD from the perspective of effective connections within and between large-scale brain networks. The attenuated effective connectivity of brain networks may be a clinical neurobiological feature of ASD. Changes in effective connectivity of brain network in children with ASD may provide useful information for the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Abstract:Objective. Abnormal local and long-range brain connectivity have been widely reported in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet the nature of these abnormalities and their functional relevance at distinct cortical rhythms remains unknown. Investigations of intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs) and their coherence across whole brain networks hold promise for determining whether patterns of functional connectivity abnormalities vary across frequencies and networks in ASD. In the present study, we aimed to probe atypical intrinsic brain connectivity networks in ASD from resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) data via characterizing the whole brain network. Approach. Connectivity within individual ICNs (measured by spectral power) and between ICNs (measured by coherence) were examined at four canonical frequency bands via a time-frequency independent component analysis on high-density EEG, which were recorded from 20 ASD and 20 typical developing (TD) subjects during an eyes-closed resting state. Main results. Among twelve identified electrophysiological ICNs, individuals with ASD showed hyper-connectivity in individual ICNs and hypo-connectivity between ICNs. Functional connectivity alterations in ASD were more severe in the frontal lobe and the default mode network (DMN) and at low frequency bands. These functional connectivity measures also showed abnormal age-related associations in ICNs related to frontal, temporal and motor regions in ASD. Significance. Our findings suggest that ASD is characterized by the opposite directions of abnormalities (i.e. hypo- and hyper-connectivity) in the hierarchical structure of the whole brain network, with more impairments in the frontal lobe and the DMN at low frequency bands, which are critical for top-down control of sensory systems, as well as for both cognition and social skills.
Delineation of Functional Changes and Associated Cortical Transcriptomic Profiles for Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract:Abstract Background: Although abnormal functional activities or connectivities in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have been reported, yet, there is still lack of consistent findings of altered functional activities or connectivities and its associated genetic basis for ASD. Methods: Here, we aimed to identify consistent brain functional alterations and the biological genetic mechanisms in children and adults with ASD using a large sample of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from the Autism Brain Image Data Exchange dataset (ABIDE). Multi-site based meta-analyses were first employed and identified abnormal brain activity, local and global functional connectivities primarily localizing in frontal-temporal-occipital regions and default mode network (DMN) in individuals with ASD. Results: The significant correlations between the aberrant brain regions and clinical phenotypes related to social functions in ASD were found. Importantly, brain-wide transcriptome-neuroimaging spatial association analyses and the follow-up enrichment, tissue-specific expression, and protein-protein interaction analyses were conducted and identified the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms of ASD. Conclusions: Collectively, our findings link molecular and functional changes in ASD and provide new evidence for neuropathology and a potential precious treatment target for ASD.
Altered default mode network causal connectivity patterns in autism spectrum disorder revealed by Liang information flow analysis

Abstract:Liang information flow method was used to construct the causal connectivity network. The dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) and ventral MPFC are important causal sources in the default mode network (DMN) in ASD. The altered causal connectivity in the DMN is correlated with the clinical symptoms of ASD. The causal connectivity difference of DMN shows a hierarchical regulation model. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a pervasive developmental disorder with severe cognitive impairment in social communication and interaction. Previous studies have reported that abnormal functional connectivity patterns within the default mode network (DMN) were associated with social dysfunction in ASD. However, how the altered causal connectivity pattern within the DMN affects the social functioning in ASD remains largely unclear. Here, we introduced the Liang information flow method, widely applied to climate science and quantum mechanics, to uncover the brain causal network patterns in ASD. Compared with the healthy controls (HC), we observed that the interactions among the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dMPFC), ventral medial prefrontal cortex (vMPFC), hippocampal formation, and temporo‐parietal junction showed more inter‐regional causal connectivity differences in ASD. For the topological property analysis, we also found the clustering coefficient of DMN and the In‐Out degree of anterior medial prefrontal cortex were significantly decreased in ASD. Furthermore, we found that the causal connectivity from dMPFC to vMPFC was correlated with the clinical symptoms of ASD. These altered causal connectivity patterns indicated that the DMN inter‐regions information processing was perturbed in ASD. In particular, we found that the dMPFC acts as a causal source in the DMN in HC, whereas it plays a causal target in ASD. Overall, our findings indicated that the Liang information flow method could serve as an important way to explore the DMN causal connectivity patterns, and it also can provide novel insights into the nueromechanisms underlying DMN dysfunction in ASD.

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a pervasive neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by abnormalities in structure and function of the brain. However, how ASD affects the relationship between fiber-bundle microstructures and functional connectivity (FC) remains unclear. Here, we analyzed structural and functional images of 26 high-functioning adult males with ASD, alongside 26 age-, gender-, and full-scale IQ-matched typically developing controls (TDCs) from the BNI dataset in the ABIDE database. We utilized fixel-based analysis to extract microstructural information from fiber tracts, which was then used to predict FC using a multilinear model. Our results revealed that the structure–function relationships in both ASD and TDC cohorts were strongly aligned in the primary cortex but decoupled in the high-order cortex, and the ASD patients exhibited reduced structure–function relationships throughout the cortex compared to the TDCs. Furthermore, we observed that the disrupted relationships in ASD were primarily driven by alterations in FC rather than fiber-bundle microstructures. The structure–function relationships in the left superior parietal cortex, right precentral and inferior temporal cortices, and bilateral insula could predict individual differences in clinical symptoms of ASD patients. These findings underscore the significance of altered relationships between fiber-bundle microstructures and FC in the etiology of ASD.

Divergent electroencephalogram resting-state functional network alterations in subgroups of autism spectrum disorder: a symptom-based clustering analysis

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by etiological and phenotypic heterogeneity. Despite efforts to categorize ASD into subtypes, research on specific functional connectivity changes within ASD subgroups based on clinical presentations is limited. This study proposed a symptom-based clustering approach to identify subgroups of ASD based on multiple clinical rating scales and investigate their distinct Electroencephalogram (EEG) functional connectivity patterns. Eyes-opened resting-state EEG data were collected from 72 children with ASD and 63 typically developing (TD) children. A data-driven clustering approach based on Social Responsiveness Scales-Second Edition and Vinland-3 scores was used to identify subgroups. EEG functional connectivity and topological characteristics in four frequency bands were assessed. Two subgroups were identified: mild ASD (mASD, n = 37) and severe ASD (sASD, n = 35). Compared to TD, mASD showed increased functional connectivity in the beta band, while sASD exhibited decreased connectivity in the alpha band. Significant between-group differences in global and regional topological abnormalities were found in both alpha and beta bands. The proposed symptom-based clustering approach revealed the divergent functional connectivity patterns in the ASD subgroups that was not observed in typical ASD studies. Our study thus provides a new perspective to address the heterogeneity in ASD research.
Resting-state Functional Under-Connectivity Within and Between Large-Scale Cortical Networks Across Three Low-Frequency Bands in Adolescents with Autism

Abstract:Although evidence is accumulating that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with disruption of functional connections between and within brain networks, it remains largely unknown whether these abnormalities are related to specific frequency bands. To address this question, network contingency analysis was performed on brain functional connectomes obtained from 213 adolescent participants across nine sites in the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE) multisite sample, to determine the disrupted connections between and within seven major cortical networks in adolescents with ASD at Slow-5, Slow-4 and Slow-3 frequency bands and further assess whether the aberrant intra-and inter-network connectivity varied as a function of ASD symptoms. Overall under-connectivity within and between large-scale intrinsic networks in ASD was revealed across the three frequency bands. Specifically, decreased connectivity strength within the default mode network (DMN), between DMN and visual network (VN), ventral attention network (VAN), and between dorsal attention network (DAN) and VAN was observed in the lower frequency band (slow-5, slow-4), while decreased connectivity between limbic network (LN) and frontal-parietal network (FPN) was observed in the higher frequency band (slow3). Furthermore, weaker connectivity within and between specific networks correlated with poorer communication and social interaction skills in the slow-5 band, uniquely. These results demonstrate intrinsic underconnectivity within and between multiple brain networks within predefined frequency bands in ASD, suggesting that frequency-related properties underlie abnormal brain network organization in the disorder.

Abstract:Neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is accompanied by abnormal functional and structural features in specific brain regions of the default mode network (DMN). However, little is known about the alterations of the topological organization and the functional connectivity (FC) of the DMN in ASD patients. Thirty-seven ASD patients and 38 healthy control (HC) participants underwent a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scan. Twenty DMN subregions were specifically selected to construct the DMN architecture. We applied graph theory approaches to the topological configuration and compare the FC patterns of the DMN. We then examined the relationships between the neuroimaging measures of the DMN and clinical characteristics in patients with ASD. The current study revealed that both the ASD and HC participants showed a small-world regimen in the DMN; however there were no significant differences in global network measures. Compared with the HC group, the ASD group exhibited significantly decreased nodal centralities in the bilateral anterior medial prefrontal cortex and increased nodal centralities in the right lateral temporal cortex and the right retrosplenial cortex. Patients with ASD displayed significantly reduced and increased FC within the DMN. Our findings demonstrated that ASD patients showed a pattern of disrupted FC metrics and nodal network metrics in the DMN, which could be a potential biomarker for objective ASD diagnoses and for the level of autism spectrum traits.
