Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

Abstract:Heavy flavor hadrons have long been considered as a probe of the quark–gluon plasma created in high energy nuclear collisions. In this paper, we review the heavy flavor properties under extreme conditions and the realization in heavy ion experiments. After a short introduction on heavy flavor properties in vacuum, we emphasize the cold and hot nuclear matter effects on heavy flavors, including shadowing effect, Cronin effect, and nuclear absorption for the former and Debye screening and regeneration for the latter. Then we discuss, in the frame of transport and coalescence models, these medium induced changes in open and closed heavy flavors in nuclear collisions and the comparison with nucleon–nucleon collisions. Considering the extremely strong electromagnetic and rotational fields generated in non-central nuclear collisions, which are widely studied in recent years, we finally investigate their effects on heavy flavor production and evolution in high energy nuclear collisions.

Abstract:With the aim of understanding the phase structure of nuclear matter created in high-energy nuclear collisions at finite baryon density, a beam energy scan program has been carried out at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). In this mini-review, most recent experimental results on collectivity, criticality and heavy flavor productions will be discussed. The goal here is to establish the connection between current available data and future heavy-ion collision experiments in a high baryon density region.

Abstract:The strong interaction between heavy quarks and the quark gluon plasma makes the open and hidden charm hadrons be sensitive probes of the deconfinement phase transition in high energy nuclear collisions. Both the cold and hot nuclear matter effects change with the colliding energy and significantly influence the heavy quark and charmonium yield and their transverse momentum distributions. The ratio of averaged quarkonium transverse momentum square and the elliptic flow reveal the nature of the QCD medium created in heavy ion collisions at SPS, RHIC and LHC energies.

Abstract:Heavy-flavour hadrons, containing at least one charm or beauty quark, are excellent probes of the deconfined medium created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, known as quark-gluon plasma. Results in smaller collision systems, such as proton-proton and p-Pb collisions, besides representing an important baseline for interpreting heavy-ion measurements, are crucial to test perturbative QCD calculations and hadronisation mechanisms in the absence of hot medium effects, as well as to search for commonalities with heavy-ion systems. Recently, measurements in proton-proton and p-Pb collisions have revealed unforeseen features with respect to the expectations based on previous results from ${\rm e}^{+}{\rm e}^{-}$ and ep collisions, showing that fragmentation fractions of heavy quarks are not universal. In this contribution, an overview of the most recent ALICE heavy-flavour measurements, along with the comparison to available calculations, will be discussed.

Abstract:We report the latest results on the search for the QCD critical point in the QCD phase diagram through high energy heavy-ion collisions. The measurements discussed are based on the higher moments of the net-proton multiplicity distributions in heavy-ion collisions. A non-monotonic variation in the product of kurtosis times the variance of the net-proton distribution is observed as a function of the collision energy with 3$\sigma$ significance. We also discuss the results of the thermal model in explaining the measured particle yield ratios in heavy-ion collisions and comparison of the different variants of hardon resonance gas model calculation to the data on higher moments of net-proton distributions. We end with a note that the upcoming programs in high baryon density regime at various experimental facilities will complete the search for the QCD critical point through heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:In high energy collisions nuclei are practically transparent to each other but produce very hot, nearly baryon-free, matter in the central rapidity region. Where do the baryons go? We calculate the energy loss of the nuclei using the color glass condensate model. Using a space-time picture of the collision we calculate the baryon and energy densities of the receding baryonic fireballs. For central collisions of large nuclei at RHIC and LHC we find baryon densities more than ten times that of atomic nuclei over a large volume which appear at high rapidities. These results can and are being used as initial conditions for subsequent hydrodynamic evolution and could test the equation of state of matter at very high baryon densities.

Abstract:We give a brief overview of recent theoretical and experimental results on the chiral magnetic effect and spin polarization effect in heavy-ion collisions. We present updated experimental results for the chiral magnetic effect and related phenomena. The time evolution of the magnetic fields in different models is discussed. The newly developed quantum kinetic theory for massive fermions is reviewed. We present theoretical and experimental results for the polarization of Λ hyperons and the ρ _00 value of vector mesons.

Abstract:Recent experimental results on the Λc+/D0 ratio in proton-proton ( pp ) collisions have revealed a significant enhancement compared to expectations based on universal fragmentation fractions/functions across different colliding systems, from e+e− to pp . This unexpected enhancement has sparked speculation about the potential effects of a deconfined medium impacting hadronization, previously considered exclusive to heavy-ion collisions. In this study, we propose a novel approach that assumes the formation of a small, deconfined, and expanding fireball even in pp collisions, where charm quarks can undergo rescattering and hadronization. We make use of the same in-medium hadronization mechanism developed for heavy-ion collisions, which involves local color-neutralization through recombination of charm quarks with nearby opposite color charges from the background fireball. Our model incorporates the presence of diquark excitations in the hot medium, which promotes the formation of charmed baryons. Moreover, the recombination process, involving closely aligned partons from the same fluid cell, effectively transfers the collective flow of the system to the final charmed hadrons. We show that this framework can qualitatively reproduce the observed experimental findings in heavy-flavor particle-yield ratios, pT -spectra and elliptic-flow coefficients. The Effect of Light Nuclei on Chemical Freeze-out Parameters at RHIC Energies

Abstract:This study investigates the chemical freeze-out of hadrons, including light-flavor, strange-flavor particles, and light nuclei, produced in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Utilizing the Thermal-FIST thermodynamic statistical model, we analyzed various particle sets: those inclusive of light nuclei, those exclusive of light nuclei, and those solely comprising light nuclei. We have determined the chemical freeze-out parameters at $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}}=$7.7-200 GeV and four centralities. A significant finding was a decrease in the chemical freeze-out temperature $T_{\textrm{ch}}$ upon the inclusion of light nuclei, with an even more pronounced reduction when considering light nuclei yields exclusively. This indicates that light nuclei formation occurs at a later stage in the system's evolution at RHIC energies. We present parameterized formulas that describe the energy dependence of the chemical freeze-out temperature $T_{\textrm{ch}}$ and baryon chemical potential $\mu_B$ for three distinct particle sets in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC energies. Our results reveal the presence of at least three distinct freeze-out hyper-surfaces at RHIC energies, corresponding to different chemical freeze-out temperatures: a light flavor freeze-out temperature of $T_L$=150.2$\pm$6 MeV, a strange flavor freeze-out temperature $T_s$=165.1$\pm$2.7 MeV, and a light nuclei freeze-out temperature $T_{\textrm{ln}}$=141.7$\pm$1.4 MeV. Notably, at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies, the expected lower freeze-out temperature for light nuclei was not observed. Instead, the chemical freeze-out temperature for light nuclei was found to be approximately 10 MeV higher than that for light flavor hadrons. This discrepancy may suggest different production mechanisms for light nuclei between RHIC and LHC energies.

Abstract:The dynamics of partons and hadrons in ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions are analyzed within the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach, which is based on a dynamical quasiparticle model (DQPM) for the partonic phase including a dynamical hadronization scheme while reproducing lattice QCD results in thermodynamic equilibrium for the equation-of-state as well as transport coefficients like shear and bulk viscosities, the electric conductivity or the charm diffusion coefficient of the hot QCD medium. In this contribution, we report on recent results on the charm dynamics and elliptic flow in Au+Au collisions at RHIC and Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC.
Tunable Molecular Resonances of Double Quantum Dots Embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm Interferometer

Abstract:We investigate resonant tunneling through molecular states of coupled double quantum dots embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer. The conductance through the system consists of two resonances associated with the bonding and the antibonding quantum states. We predict that the two resonances are composed of a Breit-Wigner resonance and a Fano resonance, those widths and Fano factor depending on the AB phase very sensitively. Further, we point out that the bonding properties, such as the covalent and the ionic bonding, can be identified by the AB oscillations.

Abstract:Heavy-flavor hadrons produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions are a sensitive probe for studying hadronization mechanisms of the quark-gluon-plasma. In this work, we survey how different transport models for the simulation of heavy-quark diffusion through a quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions implement hadronization and how this affects final-state observables. Utilizing the same input charm-quark distribution in all models at the hadronization transition, we find that the transverse-momentum dependence of the nuclear modification factor of various charm hadron species has significant sensitivity to the hadronization scheme. In addition, the charm-hadron elliptic flow exhibits a nontrivial dependence on the elliptic flow of the hadronizing partonic medium.

Abstract:The experimental determination of freeze-out temperatures and densities from the yields of light elements emitted in heavy ion collisions is discussed. Results from different experimental approaches are compared with those of model calculations carried out with and without the inclusion of medium effects. Medium effects become of relevance for baryon densities above $\approx 5 \times 10^{-4}$ fm$^{-3}$. A quantum statistical (QS) model incorporating medium effects is in good agreement with the experimentally derived results at higher densities. A densitometer based on calculated chemical equilibrium constants is proposed.

Abstract:Heavy-ion collisions at very high colliding energies are expected to produce a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at the highest temperature obtainable in a laboratory setting. Experimental studies of these reactions can provide an unprecedented range of information on properties of the QGP at high temperatures. We report theoretical investigations of the physics perspectives of heavy-ion collisions at a future high-energy collider. These include initial parton production, collective expansion of the dense medium, jet quenching, heavy-quark transport, dissociation and regeneration of quarkonia, photon and dilepton production. We illustrate the potential of future experimental studies of the initial particle production and formation of QGP at the highest temperature to provide constraints on properties of strongly interaction matter.

Abstract:The heavy ion experiments in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are going through upgrade in the next five years, shifting their focus more on the hard processes in the new runs. One of the main goals is to draw a finer image for the quark gluon plasma (QGP). The heavy flavor probes , which witness the whole history of heavy ion collision are particularly sensitive to test the properties of QGP formed in such collisions. The lattice results for heavy flavor probes provide transport and phenomenological models crucial inputs to describe the experimental observations like the strong suppression of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ and the non-zero azimuthal anisotropy at low $p_T$. In the last two years we have seen significant advances in the lattice QCD studies of heavy flavor probes, including the in-medium quarkonium properties, the complex static quark-antiquark potential and the heavy quark diffusion from lattice simulations at nonzero temperature. These achievements substantially deepen our understanding of the fate of quarkonium, the screening/unscreening of the complex potential and the temperature and quark mass dependence of the heavy quark diffusion in thermal medium. In these proceedings, we review recent results and briefly discuss possible directions in these studies.

Abstract:Transport models that take into account non-equilibrium partonic dynamics of relativistic heavy ion collisions are useful tools for relating the properties of the produced partonic matter to the experimental observables. In this talk, we review results obtained from some of the transport models, particularly the multiphase AMPT transport model, regarding the partonic effects on observables from relativistic heavy ion collisions. Also discussed are recent results from the AMPT model for the dependence of the ratio of parton hexadecupole flow to the square of its elliptic flow on the parton collision number and the separation distribution of pion pairs emitted from a heavy ion collision.

Abstract:We establish a linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) model coupled to hydrodynamical background to study hard parton evolution in heavy-ion collisions. Both elastic and inelastic scatterings are included in our calculations; and heavy and light flavor partons are treated on the same footing. Within this LBT model, we provide good descriptions of heavy and light hadron suppression and anisotropic flow in heavy-ion collisions. Angular correlation functions between heavy and light flavor hadrons are studied for the first time and shown able to quantify not only the amount of heavy quark energy loss, but also how the parton energy is re-distributed in parton showers.
