Abstract:An atomic-scale model for silicate solutions is introduced for investigation of the nucleation process during zeolite synthesis in the absence of a structure directing agent. Monte Carlo schemes are developed to determine the equilibrium distribution of silicate cluster sizes within the context of this model. How the nucleation barrier and critical cluster size change with Si monomer concentration is discussed. Distance and angle histograms as well as ring size distributions are calculated and compared with known zeolite structures. The free energies of critical clusters are compared with those for small clusters of alpha-quartz.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the nucleation mechanism in the zeolite synthesis process without a structure - directing agent. Specifically, the researchers developed the Monte Carlo method to determine the equilibrium distribution of silicate cluster sizes during nucleation in silicate solutions. Through this model, they explored how the nucleation barrier and critical cluster size change with the change of monomeric silicon concentration, and calculated the distance histogram, angle histogram and ring - size distribution, and these data were compared with the known zeolite structures. In addition, a comparative analysis was also carried out on the free energy of the critical cluster and that of the small α - quartz cluster. The core of the paper lies in understanding the basic steps of zeolite synthesis, especially the synthesis process carried out under hydrothermal conditions. Although a great deal of experimental efforts have been made to characterize the kinetics of zeolite growth, the nucleation mechanism is still not fully understood. This is because the existing experimental techniques (such as NMR, X - ray diffraction, etc.) have limitations in scale and it is difficult to directly observe the nucleation process. Therefore, this study provides a new approach to explore this process through computational simulation methods, especially for the nucleation phenomenon in the zeolite synthesis process without templates.
