Abstract:In θ-expanded approach, we expand the noncommutative quantum electrodynamics action to θ2 order and calculate the one loop divergent corrections to gauge field propagators. It is shown that the gauge field propagators are one loop renormalizable at θ2-order with a massive or massless fermion field.

Abstract:Two-loop renormalization group equations in the standard model are recalculated. A new coefficient is found in the beta function of the quartic coupling and a class of gauge invariants is found to be absent in the beta functions of hadronic Yukawa couplings. The two-loop beta function of the Higgs mass parameter is presented in complete form.

Abstract:Using Wilsonian renormalization, we calculate the quantum correction to observable quantities, rather than the bare parameters, of the Higgs field. A physical parameter, such as a mass-squared or a quartic coupling, at an energy scale $\mu$ is obtained from that at a reference scale by integrating in the degrees of freedom in between. In this process, heavy modes decouple and the ultraviolet scale dependence is canceled in the observables. An exact renormalization group equation is parametrized by the low-energy scale $\mu$.

Abstract:We extend a previous Landau-gauge study of subtractive renormalization of the fermion propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation in strong-coupling, quenched four-dimensional QED to arbitrary covariant gauges. We use the fermion-photon proper vertex proposed by Curtis and Pennington with an additional correction term included to compensate for the small gauge dependence induced by the ultraviolet regulator. We discuss the chiral limit and the onset of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in the presence of nonperturbative renormalization. We extract the critical coupling in several different gauges and find evidence of a small residual gauge dependence in this quantity.

Abstract:Mandelstam-Leibbrandt(ML) regularization of Very Special Relativity (VSR) amplitudes in momentum space depends on two fixed null vectors $n_\mu,\bar{n}_\mu$ besides external momenta. ML is known to preserve gauge invariance and naive power counting. The second null vector $\bar{n}_\mu$ destroys the $Sim(2)$ symmetry of the VSR model. We devise a systematic procedure to take the $\bar{n}_\mu->0$ limit to recover the lost $Sim(2)$ symmetry. The procedure produces $Sim(2)$ and gauge invariant loop amplitudes. We show how to use this method to remove unphysical terms from the Non Relativistic Potential of Very Special Relativity Quantum Electrodynamics(VSR QED) with a massive photon. Then we compute the one loop renormalization of VSR QED. Finally we derive the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron, modified by neutrino and photon mass; and comments on the phenomenological implications.

Abstract:We review the Universal Extra-Dimensional Model compactified on a S1/Z2 orbifold, and the renormalisation group evolution of quark and lepton masses, mixing angles and phases both in the UED extension of the Standard Model and of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We consider two typical scenarios: all matter fields propagating in the bulk, and matter fields constrained to the brane. The resulting renormalisation group evolution equations in these scenarios are compared with the existing results in the literature, together with their implications.
Renormalisable Non-local Quark-Gluon Interaction: Mass Gap, Chiral Symmetry Breaking & Scale Invariance

Abstract:We derive a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model from a non-local gauge theory and show that it has confining properties at low energies. In particular, we present an extended approach to non-local QCD and a complete revision of the technique of Bender, Milton and Savage applied to non-local theories, providing a set of Dyson--Schwinger equations in differential form. In the local case, we obtain closed form solutions in the simplest case of the scalar field and extend it to the Yang--Mills field. In general, for non-local theories, we use a perturbative technique and a Fourier series and show how higher-order harmonics are heavily damped due to the presence of the non-local factor. The spectrum of the theory is analysed for the non-local Yang--Mills sector and found to be in agreement with the local results on the lattice in the limit of the non-locality mass parameter running to infinity. In the non-local case, we confine ourselves to a non-locality mass that is sufficiently large compared to the mass scale arising from the integration of the Dyson--Schwinger equations. Such a choice results in good agreement, in the proper limit, with the spectrum of the local theory. We derive the gap equation for the fermions in the theory that gives some indication of quark confinement in the non-local NJL case as well. Confinement seems to be a rather ubiquitous effect that removes some degrees of freedom in the original action, favouring the appearance of new observable states, as seen, e.g.,\ for quantum chromodynamics at lower energies.

Renormalization in Some 2D su(2) Coset Models

Abstract:We consider a RG flow in certain 2D coset models perturbed by the least relevant field. In the case of the symmetric su(2) coset model we show, up to second order of the perturbation theory, that there exists a nontrivial IR fixed point.We obtain the structure constants and the four-point functions of certain fields by deriving specific recursive relations. This allows us to compute the anomalous dimensions and the mixing coefficients of these fields in the UV and IR theories. In the case of another su(2) coset model, describing the N=2 superconformal theories, we show that there does not exists a nontrivial IR fixed point up to second order.

Abstract:We consider a higher-derivative extension of QED modified by the addition of a gauge-invariant dimension-6 kinetic operator in the U(1) gauge sector. The Feynman diagrams at one-loop level are then computed. The modification in the spin-1 sector leads the electron self-energy and vertex corrections diagrams finite in the ultraviolet regime. Indeed, no regularization prescription is used to calculate these diagrams because the modified propagator always occurs coupled to conserved currents. Moreover, besides the usual massless pole in the spin-1 sector, there is the emergence of a massive one, which becomes complex when computing the radiative corrections at one-loop order. This imaginary part defines the finite decay width of the massive mode. To check consistency, we also derive the decay length using the electron--positron elastic scattering and show that both results are equivalent. Because the presence of this unstable mode, the standard renormalization procedures cannot be used and is necessary adopt an appropriate framework to perform the perturbative renormalization. For this purpose, we apply the complex-mass shell scheme (CMS) to renormalize the aforementioned model. As an application of the formalism developed, we estimate a quantum bound on the massive parameter using the measurement of the electron anomalous magnetic moment and compute the Uehling potential. At the end, the renormalization group is analyzed.

Abstract:In this work we perform calculations in order to determine the renormalization factors and the mixing coefficients of the Yukawa and the quartic couplings in $\mathcal{N} = 1$ Supersymmetric QCD. The Yukawa couplings describe the interactions between gluino, quark and squark fields whereas the quartic couplings describe four-squark interactions. We discretize the action on a Euclidean lattice using the Wilson formulation for the gluino, quark and gluon fields; for squark fields (scalar fields) we employ naïve discretization. At the quantum level Yukawa and quartic interactions suffer from mixing with other operators which have the same transformation properties. Exploiting parity and charge conjugation symmetries of the Supersymmetric QCD action, we reduce the allowed mixing patterns. We compute, perturbatively to one-loop and to the lowest order in the lattice spacing, the relevant three-point Green's functions so as to fine tune the Yukawa couplings and the relevant four-point Green's functions to fine tune the quartic couplings. We use both dimensional and lattice regularizations as required for implementing the Modified Minimal Subtraction scheme ($\overline{\rm MS}$).

A real-space renormalization-group calculation for the quantum Z_2 gauge theory on a square lattice

Abstract:We revisit Fradkin and Raby's real-space renormalization-group method to study the quantum Z_2 gauge theory defined on links forming a two-dimensional square lattice. Following an old suggestion of theirs, a systematic perturbation expansion developed by Hirsch and Mazenko is used to improve the algorithm to second order in an intercell coupling, thereby incorporating the effects of discarded higher energy states. A careful derivation of gauge-invariant effective operators is presented in the Hamiltonian formalism. Renormalization group equations are analyzed near the nontrivial fixed point, reaffirming old work by Hirsch on the dual transverse field Ising model. In addition to recovering Hirsch's previous findings, critical exponents for the scaling of the spatial correlation length and energy gap in the electric free (deconfined) phase are compared. Unfortunately, their agreement is poor. The leading singular behavior of the ground state energy density is examined near the critical point: we compute both a critical exponent and estimate a critical amplitude ratio.

Vanishing of the anomaly in lattice chiral gauge theory

Abstract:The anomaly cancellation is a basic property of the Standard Model, crucial for its consistence. We consider a lattice chiral gauge theory of massless Wilson fermions interacting with a non-compact massive U(1) field coupled with left and right handed fermions in four dimensions. We prove in the infinite volume limit, for weak coupling and inverse lattice step of the order of boson mass, that the anomaly vanishes up to subleading corrections and under the same condition as in the continuum. The proof is based on a combination of exact Renormalization Group, non perturbative decay bounds of correlations and lattice symmetries.

Abstract:We propose an exact renormalization group equation for Lattice Gauge Theories, that has no dependence on the lattice spacing. We instead relate the lattice spacing properties directly to the continuum convergence of the support of each local plaquette. Equivalently, this is formulated as a convergence prescription for a characteristic polynomial in the gauge coupling that allows the exact meromorphic continuation of a nonperturbative system arbitrarily close to the continuum limit.

Abstract:Recently, one of us (H.S.) gave an explicit form of the Ward-Takahashi identity for the Wilson action of QED. We first rederive the identity using a functional method. The identity makes it possible to realize the gauge symmetry even in the presence of a momentum cutoff. In the cutoff dependent realization, the abelian nature of the gauge symmetry is lost, breaking the nilpotency of the BRS transformation. Using the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism, we extend the Wilson action by including the antifield contributions. Then, the Ward-Takahashi identity for the Wilson action is lifted to a quantum master equation, and the modified BRS transformation regains nilpotency. We also obtain a flow equation for the extended Wilson action.

Symmetries, Universes and Phases of QCD$_2$ with an Adjoint Dirac Fermion

Abstract:We study 2d $SU(N)$ QCD with an adjoint Dirac fermion. Assuming that the IR limit of the massless theory is captured by a WZW coset CFT, we show that this CFT can be decomposed into a sum of distinct CFTs, each representing a superselection sector (universe) of the gauge theory corresponding to different flux tube sectors. The CFTs describing each universe are related by non-invertible topological lines that exhibit a mixed anomaly with the $\mathbb{Z}^{(1)}_N$ 1-form symmetry. These symmetries exist along the entire RG flow thereby implying deconfinement of the massless theory. We begin by outlining the general features of the model for arbitrary $N$ and then provide a detailed analysis for $N=2$ and $N=3$. In these specific cases, we explicitly determine the IR partition function, identify the symmetries, and explore relevant deformations. Based on these findings and in alignment with various previous studies, we propose a phase diagram for the massive $SU(2)$ gauge theory and calculate its confining string tension.

Abstract:We illustrate how the reorganization of perturbation theory at finite temperature can be economically cast in terms of the Wilson-Polchinski renormalization methods. We take as an example the old saw of the induced thermal mass of a hot scalar field with a quartic coupling, which we compute to second order in the coupling constant. We show that the form of the result can be largely determined by renormalization-group arguments without the explicit evaluation of Feynman graphs.
