Abstract:This talk describes how modern theories of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking have evolved from the original minimal QCD-like technicolor model in response to three key challenges: R_b, flavor-changing neutral currents, and weak isospin violation.

Abstract:Technicolor and other theories of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking invoke chiral symmetry breaking triggered by strong gauge-dynamics, analogous to that found in QCD, to explain the observed W, Z, and fermion masses. In this talk we describe why a realistic theory of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking must, relative to QCD, produce an enhanced fermion condensate. We quantify the degree to which the technicolor condensate must be enhanced in order to yield the observed quark masses, and still be consistent with phenomenological constraints on flavor-changing neutral-currents. Lattice studies of technicolor and related theories provide the only way to demonstrate that such enhancements are possible and, hopefully, to discover viable candidate models. We comment briefly on the current status of non-perturbative investigations of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, and provide a "wish-list" of phenomenologically-relevant properties that are important to calculate in these theories

Abstract:This review is based on lectures on technicolor and extended technicolor presented at the Frascati Spring School in May 2000. I summarize the motivation and structure of this theory of dynamical breaking of electroweak and flavor symmetries. Particular attention is paid to the main phenomenological obstacles to this picture-flavor-changing neutral currents, precision electroweak measurements, and the large top-quark mass-and their proposed resolutions-walking technicolor and topcolor-assisted technicolor. I then discuss the signatures for technicolor and the existing and upcoming searches for them at LEP, the Tevatron Collider, and the Large Hadron Collider. The final section lists some outstanding theoretical questions.

Abstract:Using new insights into strongly coupled gauge theories arising from analytic calculations and lattice simulations, we explore a framework for technicolor model building that relies on a non-trivial infrared fixed point, and an essential role for QCD. Interestingly, the models lead to a simple relation between the electroweak scale and the QCD confinement scale, and to the possible existence of exotic leptoquarks with masses of several hundred GeV.

Abstract:We summarize basic features associated to dynamical breaking of the electroweak symmetry. The knowledge of the phase diagram of strongly coupled theories as function of the number of colors, flavors and matter representation plays a fundamental role when trying to construct viable extensions of the standard model (SM). Therefore we will report on the status of the phase diagram for SU(N) gauge theories with fermionic matter transforming according to arbitrary representations of the underlying gauge group. We will discuss how the phase diagram can be used to construct unparticle models. We will then review Minimal Walking Technicolor (MWT) and other extensions, such as partially gauged and split technicolor. MWT is a sufficiently general, symmetry wise, model to be considered as a benchmark for any model aiming at breaking the electroweak symmetry dynamically. The unification of the standard model gauge couplings will be revisited within technicolor extensions of the SM. A number of appendices are added to review some basic methods and to provide useful details. In one of the appendices we will show how to gain information on the spectrum of strongly coupled theories relevant for new extensions of the SM by introducing and using alternative large N limits.

Abstract:We provide a pedagogical introduction to extensions of the Standard Model in which the Higgs is composite. These extensions are known as models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking or, in brief, Technicolor. Material covered includes: motivations for Technicolor, the construction of underlying gauge theories leading to minimal models of Technicolor, the comparison with electroweak precision data, the low energy effective theory, the spectrum of the states common to most of the Technicolor models, the decays of the composite particles and the experimental signals at the Large Hadron Collider. The level of the presentation is aimed at readers familiar with the Standard Model but who have little or no prior exposure to Technicolor. Several extensions of the Standard Model featuring a composite Higgs can be reduced to the effective Lagrangian introduced in the text. We establish the relevant experimental benchmarks for Vanilla, Running, Walking, and Custodial Technicolor, and a natural fourth family of leptons, by laying out the framework to discover these models at the Large Hadron Collider.

Condensate Enhancement and D-Meson Mixing in Technicolor Theories

Abstract:Since the pioneering work of Eichten and Lane it has been known that the scale of the interactions responsible for the generation of the strange-quark mass in extended technicolor theories must, absent any "GIM-like" mechanism for suppressing flavor-changing neutral currents, be greater than of order 1000 TeV. In this note we point out that the constraint from the neutral D-meson system is now equally strong, implying that the charm quark mass must also arise from flavor dynamics at a scale this high. We then quantify the degree to which the technicolor condensate must be enhanced in order to yield the observed quark masses, if the extended technicolor scale is of order 1000 TeV. Our results are intended to provide a framework in which to interpret and apply the results of lattice studies of conformal strongly interacting gauge theories, and the corresponding numerical measurements of the anomalous dimension of the mass operator in candidate theories of "walking" technicolor.

Abstract:We explore the scenario in which the breaking of the electroweak symmetry is due to the simultaneous presence and interplay of a dynamical sector and an unnatural elementary Higgs. We introduce a low energy effective Lagrangian and constrain the various couplings via direct search limits and electroweak and flavor precision tests. We find that the model we study is a viable model of dynamical breaking of the electroweak symmetry.

CP Violation and Flavor Mixing in Technicolor Theories

Abstract:Vacuum alignment in technicolor models provides an attractive origin for the quarks' CP violation and, possibly, a natural solution for the strong-CP problem of QCD. We discuss these topics in this paper. Then we apply them to determine plausible mixing matrices for left and right-handed quarks. These matrices determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix as well as new mixing angles and phases that are observable in extended technicolor (ETC) and topcolor (TC2) interactions. We determine the contributions of these new interactions to CP-violating and mixing observables in the K^0, B_d and B_s systems. Consistency with mixing and CP violation in the K^0 system requires assuming that ETC interactions are electroweak generation conserving even if technicolor has a walking gauge coupling. Large ETC gauge boson masses and small intergenerational mixing then result in negligibly small ETC contributions to B-meson mixing and CP violation and to Re(epsilon'/epsilon). We confirm our earlier strong lower bounds on TC2 gauge boson masses from B_d--B_d-bar mixing. We then pay special attention to the possibility that current experiments indicate a deviation from standard model expectations of the values of sin(2 beta) measured in B_d -> J/psi K_S, phi K_S, eta' K_S, and pi K_S, studying the ability of TC2 to account for these. We also determine the TC2 contribution to Delta M_{B_s} and to Re(epsilon'/epsilon), and find them to be appreciable.

Abstract:Talks presented at Beyond The Standard Model IV Conference, Lake Tahoe, Dec 94: NEW FERMION FAMILIES AND PRECISION ELECTROWEAK DATA: We highlight a trend in the precision electroweak data towards light new physics and argue that some spectra of strongly interacting technifamilies are plausibly compatible with the data. FERMION MASSES IN EXTENDED TECHNICOLOUR: An ETC model with a minimal number of operators responsible for fermion masses that break the global symmetries in the observed manner postdicts the light quark masses. The up down mass inversion may be explained by the inclusion of a family symmetric ansatz for the CKM matrix angles.

Abstract:We give a complete account of how soft gluon, massless quark, evolution equations in colour space originate, from a factorization into a hard cross section density operator and a soft function encoding measurements and the projection on definite colours. We detail this formalism up to the two loop level and we demonstrate how the evolution kernels relate to infrared subtractions, and how the resolution of infrared singular regions conspires with the structure of observables the algorithm should be able to predict. The latter allows us to address evolution in different kinematic variables, including energy ordering and angular cutoffs in non-global observables. The soft factor and its evolution resembles a hadronization model including effects such as colour reconnection, and could give insight into the structure of power corrections in observables which require soft gluon evolution.

Abstract:In technicolor models with a scalar doublet, we discuss the effect of the custodial isospin violation on the electroweak parameters S and T in one-loop perturbation theory. We find that the “high-energy” contributions to the parameter S could be reduced by the mass splitting of technifermions p and m. The leading contributions to the parameter T come from the technifermions p−m mass splitting and may exceed the experimental bounds. However, the value of parameter T can be reduced by adjusting the value of δ.
The Collider Phenomenology of Technihadrons in the Technicolor Straw Man Model

Abstract:We discuss the phenomenology of the lightest SU(3)_C singlet and non-singlet technihadrons in the Straw Man Model of low-scale technicolor (TCSM). The technihadrons are assumed to be those arising in topcolor--assisted technicolor models in which topcolor is broken by technifermion condensates. We improve upon the description of the color--singlet sector presented in our earlier paper introducing the TCSM (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-ph/9903369" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-ph/9903369">hep-ph/9903369</a>). These improvements are most important for subprocess energies well below the masses of the technirho and techniomega, and, therefore, apply especially to e+e- colliders such as LEP and a low--energy linear collider. In the color--octet sector, we consider mixing of the gluon, the coloron V_8 from topcolor breaking, and four isosinglet color--octet technirho mesons. We assume, as expected in walking technicolor, that these technirhos decay into qbar-q, gg, and g-technipion final states, but not into technipion pairs. All the TCSM production and decay processes discussed here are included in the event generator Pythia. We present several simulations appropriate for the Tevatron Collider, and suggest benchmark model lines for further experimental investigation.

Abstract:We propose novel bosonic Technicolor models augmented by an <math>SU(2)R</math> gauge group and scalar doublet. Dynamical breaking of <math>SU(2)R</math> induced by technifermion condensation triggers <math>SU(2)L</math> breaking via a portal coupling. The scale of the new strong interactions is as high as that of composite Higgs models, and the vacuum stability challenge confronting ordinary bosonic Technicolor models is avoided. Thermal or asymmetric dark matter, whose stability is ensured by a <math>U(1)TB</math> technibaryon symmetry, can be realized. In the latter case, the correct relic density can be reproduced for a wide range of dark matter mass via leptogenesis.

Abstract:In this talk, I recall the history of the development of the unified electroweak theory, incorporating the symmetry-breaking Higgs mechanism, as I saw it from my standpoint as a member of Abdus Salam's group at Imperial College. I start by describing the state of physics in the years after the Second World War, explain how the goal of a unified gauge theory of weak and electromagnetic interactions emerged, the obstacles encountered, in particular the Goldstone theorem, and how they were overcome, followed by a brief account of more recent history, culminating in the historic discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012.

Abstract:A chiral-symmetric technicolor model successfully reconciles the tension between electroweak precision tests and traditional technicolor models. Focusing on its simplest realization preserving the conventional Higgs mechanism, we study its primordial gravitational wave signatures originating from first order phase transitions in the early Universe. We found that abundant phase transition patterns arise from a physically viable parameter space. Besides, we have also found gravitational wave signals possibly visible by future experiments, such as LISA, BBO and u-DECIGO. Our results stress the importance of gravitational wave detectors in exploring new physics complementary to ground colliders in the multi-messenger astronomy era.
Non-Invertible Peccei-Quinn Symmetry and the Massless Quark Solution to the Strong CP Problem

Abstract:We consider theories of gauged quark flavor and identify non-invertible Peccei-Quinn symmetries arising from fractional instantons when the resulting gauge group has non-trivial global structure. Such symmetries exist solely because the Standard Model has the same numbers of generations as colors, $N_g = N_c$. This leads us to a massless down-type quark solution to the strong CP problem in an ultraviolet $SU(9)$ theory of quark color-flavor unification. We show how the CKM flavor structure and weak CP violation can be generated without upsetting our solution.

Abstract:We introduce the topic of dynamical breaking of the electroweak symmetry and its link to unparticle physics and cosmology. The knowledge of the phase diagram of strongly coupled theories plays a fundamental role when trying to construct viable extensions of the standard model (SM). Therefore we present the state-of-the-art of the phase diagram for SU, Sp and SO gauge theories with fermionic matter transforming according to arbitrary representations of the underlying gauge group. We summarize several analytic methods used recently to acquire information about these gauge theories. We also provide new results for the phase diagram of the generalized Bars-Yankielowicz and Georgi-Glashow chiral gauge theories. These theories have been used for constructing grand unified models and have been the template for models of extended technicolor interactions. To gain information on the phase diagram of chiral gauge theories we will introduce a novel all orders beta function for chiral gauge theories. This permits the first unified study of all non-supersymmetric gauge theories with fermionic matter representation both chiral and non-chiral. To the best of our knowledge the phase diagram of these complex models appears here for the first time. We will introduce recent extensions of the SM featuring minimal conformal gauge theories known as minimal walking models. Finally we will discuss the electroweak phase transition at nonzero temperature for models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking.
A viable one-family technicolor model

Abstract:We construct a one-family technicolor model which is consistent with the precision experiments on the electroweak interaction. The Majorana mass of the right-handed techni-neutrino is introduced and the techni-$U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry is gauged to obtain the correct breaking of the electroweak symmetry. The tree-level kinetic mixing between the techni-$U(1)_{B-L}$ and $U(1)_Y$ gauge bosons plays an important role for having the consistent value of the $S$ parameter.

Holographic Non-Abelian Flavour Symmetry Breaking

Abstract:We investigate a holographic model for both spontaneous and explicit symmetry breaking of non-abelian flavour symmetries. This consists of a bottom-up model inspired by the top-down D3/D7 probe brane model that incorporates the running anomalous dimensions of the fields. We ensure that in the holographic bulk, the full non-abelian flavour symmetries for massless quarks are present. The quark masses are spontaneously generated field values in the bulk and there is a resultant bulk Higgs mechanism. We provide a numerical technique to find the mass eigenvalues for a system of coupled holographic fields. We test this approach using an analytic model of ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric matter. We apply this approach to two-flavour QCD with both $u-d$ quark mass splitting and multi-trace bulk action terms that are expected to break $U(N_f)_V$ to $SU(N_f)_V \times U(1)_V$ away from large $N_c$. We also discuss three-flavour QCD with strange quark mass splitting and applications to more exotic symmetry breaking patterns of potential relevance for composite Higgs models.
