Abstract:We say that a (multi)graph $G = (V,E)$ has geometric thickness $t$ if there exists a straight-line drawing $\varphi : V \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^2$ and a $t$-coloring of its edges where no two edges sharing a point in their relative interior have the same color. The \textsc{Geometric Thickness} problem asks whether a given multigraph has geometric thickness at most $t$. This problem was shown to be NP-hard for $t=2$ [Durocher, Gethner, and Mondal, CG 2016]. In this paper, we settle the computational complexity of \textsc{Geometric Thickness} by showing that it is $\exists \mathbb{R}$-complete already for thickness $30$. Moreover, our reduction shows that the problem is $\exists \mathbb{R}$-complete for $4392$-planar graphs, where a graph is $k$-planar if it admits a topological drawing with at most $k$ crossings per edge. In the course of our paper, we answer previous questions on geometric thickness and on other related problems, in particular that simultaneous graph embeddings of $31$ edge-disjoint graphs and pseudo-segment stretchability with chromatic number $30$ are $\exists \mathbb{R}$-complete.

Abstract:We study the classical problem of computing geometric thickness, i.e., finding a straight-line drawing of an input graph and a partition of its edges into as few parts as possible so that each part is crossing-free. Since the problem is NP-hard, we investigate its tractability through the lens of parameterized complexity. As our first set of contributions, we provide two fixed-parameter algorithms which utilize well-studied parameters of the input graph, notably the vertex cover and feedback edge numbers. Since parameterizing by the thickness itself does not yield tractability and the use of other structural parameters remains open due to general challenges identified in previous works, as our second set of contributions, we propose a different pathway to tractability for the problem: extension of partial solutions. In particular, we establish a full characterization of the problem's parameterized complexity in the extension setting depending on whether we parameterize by the number of missing vertices, edges, or both.

Abstract:The thickness $\theta(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of planar spanning subgraphs into which the graph $G$ can be decomposed. As a topological invariant of a graph, it is a measurement of the closeness to planarity of a graph, and it also has important applications to VLSI design. In this paper, the thickness of graphs that are obtained by vertex-amalgamation and bar-amalgamation of any two graphs whose thicknesses are known are obtained, respectively. And the lower and upper bounds for the thickness of graphs that are obtained by edge-amalgamation and 2-vertex-amalgamation of any two graphs whose thicknesses are known are also derived, respectively.

Abstract:Inspired by a classical theorem of topological dimension theory, we prove that every geodesic metric space of asymptotic dimension $n$ containing a bi-infinite geodesic can be coarsely separated by a subset $S$ of asymptotic dimension equal to or smaller than $n-1$.\\ We define asymptotic Cantor manifolds, and we prove that every finitely generated group contains such a manifold. We also state some questions related to them.

Abstract:Every $k$-tree has book thickness at most $k+1$, and this bound is best possible for all $k\geq3$. Vandenbussche et al. (2009) proved that every $k$-tree that has a smooth degree-3 tree decomposition with width $k$ has book thickness at most $k$. We prove this result is best possible for $k\geq 4$, by constructing a $k$-tree with book thickness $k+1$ that has a smooth degree-4 tree decomposition with width $k$. This solves an open problem of Vandenbussche et al. (2009)

Depth Separations in Neural Networks: Separating the Dimension from the Accuracy

Abstract:We prove an exponential separation between depth 2 and depth 3 neural networks, when approximating an $\mathcal{O}(1)$-Lipschitz target function to constant accuracy, with respect to a distribution with support in $[0,1]^{d}$, assuming exponentially bounded weights. This addresses an open problem posed in \citet{safran2019depth}, and proves that the curse of dimensionality manifests in depth 2 approximation, even in cases where the target function can be represented efficiently using depth 3. Previously, lower bounds that were used to separate depth 2 from depth 3 required that at least one of the Lipschitz parameter, target accuracy or (some measure of) the size of the domain of approximation scale polynomially with the input dimension, whereas we fix the former two and restrict our domain to the unit hypercube. Our lower bound holds for a wide variety of activation functions, and is based on a novel application of an average- to worst-case random self-reducibility argument, to reduce the problem to threshold circuits lower bounds.

Thinness and its variations on some graph families and coloring graphs of bounded thinness

Abstract:Interval graphs and proper interval graphs are well known graph classes, for which several generalizations have been proposed in the literature. In this work, we study the (proper) thinness, and several variations, for the classes of cographs, crowns graphs and grid graphs. We provide the exact values for several variants of thinness (proper, independent, complete, precedence, and combinations of them) for the crown graphs $CR_n$. For cographs, we prove that the precedence thinness can be determined in polynomial time. We also improve known bounds for the thinness of $n \times n$ grids $GR_n$ and $m \times n$ grids $GR_{m,n}$, proving that $\left \lceil \frac{n-1}{3} \right \rceil \leq \mbox{thin}(GR_n) \leq \left \lceil \frac{n+1}{2} \right \rceil$. Regarding the precedence thinness, we prove that $\mbox{prec-thin}(GR_{n,2}) = \left \lceil \frac{n+1}{2} \right \rceil$ and that $\left \lceil \frac{n-1}{3} \right \rceil \left \lceil\frac{n-1}{2} \right \rceil + 1 \leq \mbox{prec-thin}(GR_n) \leq \left \lceil\frac{n-1}{2} \right \rceil^2+1$. As applications, we show that the $k$-coloring problem is NP-complete for precedence $2$-thin graphs and for proper $2$-thin graphs, when $k$ is part of the input. On the positive side, it is polynomially solvable for precedence proper $2$-thin graphs, given the order and partition.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate basic geometric quantities of a random hyperbolic surface of genus g$g$ with respect to the Weil-Petersson measure on the moduli space Mg$\mathcal {M}_g$. We show that as g$g$ goes to infinity, a generic surface X is an element of Mg$X\in \mathcal {M}_g$ satisfies asymptotically: the separating systole of X$X$ is approximately 2logg;$2\log g\hbox{\it ;}$there is a half-collar of width approximately logg2$\frac{\log g}{2}$ around any separating systolic curve on X;$X\hbox{\it ;}$the length of the shortest separating closed multi-geodesics on X$X$ is approximately 2logg$2\log g$.(1)(2)(3)As applications, we also discuss the asymptotic behavior of the extremal separating systole, the non-simple systole, and the expected length of the shortest separating closed multi-geodesics as g$g$ goes to infinity.
Limitations on Realistic Hyperbolic Graph Drawing

Abstract:We show that several types of graph drawing in the hyperbolic plane require features of the drawing to be separated from each other by sub-constant distances, distances so small that they can be accurately approximated by Euclidean distance. Therefore, for these types of drawing, hyperbolic geometry provides no benefit over Euclidean graph drawing.

Abstract:For self-similar sets, there are two important separation properties: the open set condition and the weak separation condition introduced by Zerner, which may be replaced by the formally stronger finite type property of Ngai and Wang. We show that any finite type self-similar set can be represented as a graph-directed construction obeying the open set condition. The proof is based on a combinatorial algorithm which performed well in computer experiments.

Abstract:This study focuses on linear partial differential equation (PDE) systems that arise in topology optimization where the thickness of a structure is constrained. The thickness derived from the PDE is a fictitious one, and the key challenge of this work is to verify its equivalence to the intuitive, geometrically defined thickness. The main difficulty lies in that while intuitive thickness is determined solely by the shape, the thickness defined by the PDE depends not only on the shape but also on the entire domain and the diffusion coefficients used in solving the PDE. In this paper, we demonstrate that the thickness of an infinite, straight film as a simple shape with constant thickness is equivalent within a general domain. The proof involves constructing a reference solution within a special domain and evaluating the difference using the maximum (modulus) principle and an interior $H^1$ estimate. Additionally, we provide an estimate of the dependence of thickness on the diffusion coefficient.

Abstract:This monograph resolves—in a dense class of cases—several open problems concerning geodesics in i.i.d. first-passage percolation on Z d \mathbb {Z}^d . Our primary interest is in the empirical measures of edge-weights observed along geodesics from 0 0 to n ξ n{\boldsymbol \xi } , where ξ {\boldsymbol \xi } is a fixed unit vector. For various dense families of edge-weight distributions, we prove that these empirical measures converge weakly to a deterministic limit as n → ∞ n\to \infty , answering a question of Hoffman. These families include arbitrarily small L ∞ L^\infty -perturbations of any given distribution, almost every finitely supported distribution, uncountable collections of continuous distributions, and certain discrete distributions whose atoms can have any prescribed sequence of probabilities. Moreover, the constructions are explicit enough to guarantee examples possessing certain features, for instance: both continuous and discrete distributions whose support is all of [ 0 , ∞ ) [0,\infty ) , and distributions given by a density function that is k k -times differentiable. All results also hold for ξ {\boldsymbol \xi } -directed infinite geodesics. In comparison, we show that if Z d \mathbb {Z}^d is replaced by the infinite d d -ary tree, then any distribution for the weights admits a unique limiting empirical measure along geodesics. In both the lattice and tree cases, our methodology is driven by a new variational formula for the time constant, which requires no assumptions on the edge-weight distribution. Incidentally, this variational approach also allows us to obtain new convergence results for geodesic lengths, which have been unimproved in the subcritical regime since the seminal 1965 manuscript of Hammersley and Welsh.

Geometric graphs with exponential chromatic number and arbitrary girth

Abstract:In 1975 Erdős initiated the study of the following very natural question. What can be said about the chromatic number of unit distance graphs in $\mathbb{R}^2$ that have large girth? Over the years this question and its natural extension to $\mathbb{R}^d$ attracted considerable attention with the high-dimensional variant reiterated recently by Alon and Kupavskii. We prove that there exist unit distance graphs in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with chromatic number at least $(1.074 + o(1))^d$ that have arbitrarily large girth. This improves upon a series of results due to Kupavskii; Sagdeev; and Sagdeev and Raigorodskii and gives the first bound in which the base of the exponent does not tend to one with the girth. In addition, our construction can be made explicit which allows us to answer in a strong form a question of Kupavskii. Our arguments show graphs of large chromatic number and high girth exist in a number of other geometric settings including diameter graphs and orthogonality graphs.

Abstract:Graphs with bounded thinness were defined in 2007 as a generalization of interval graphs. In this paper we introduce the concept of proper thinness, such that graphs with bounded proper thinness generalize proper interval graphs. We study the complexity of problems related to the computation of these parameters, describe the behavior of the thinness and proper thinness under three graph operations, and relate thinness and proper thinness with other graph invariants in the literature. Finally, we describe a wide family of problems that can be solved in polynomial time for graphs with bounded thinness, generalizing for example list matrix partition problems with bounded size matrix, and enlarge this family of problems for graphs with bounded proper thinness, including domination problems.

Abstract:The thinness of a graph is a width parameter that generalizes some properties of interval graphs, which are exactly the graphs of thinness one. Many NP-complete problems can be solved in polynomial time for graphs with bounded thinness, given a suitable representation of the graph. In this paper we study the thinness and its variations of graph products. We show that the thinness behaves "well" in general for products, in the sense that for most of the graph products defined in the literature, the thinness of the product of two graphs is bounded by a function (typically product or sum) of their thinness, or of the thinness of one of them and the size of the other. We also show for some cases the non-existence of such a function.

Eliminating Depth Cycles Among Triangles in Three Dimensions

Abstract:The vertical depth relation among n pairwise openly disjoint triangles in 3-space may contain cycles. We show that, for any $\varepsilon >0$, the triangles can be cut into $O(n^{3/2+\varepsilon })$ connected semialgebraic pieces, whose description complexity depends only on the choice of $\varepsilon $, such that the depth relation among these pieces is now a proper partial order. This bound is nearly tight in the worst case. The pieces can be constructed efficiently. This work extends the recent study by two of the authors (Discrete Comput. Geom. 59(3), 725–741 (2018)) on eliminating depth cycles among lines in 3-space. Our approach is again algebraic, and makes use of a recent variant of the polynomial partitioning technique, due to Guth (Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 159(3), 459–469 (2015)), which leads to a recursive algorithm for cutting the triangles. In contrast to the case of lines, our analysis here is considerably more involved, due to the two-dimensional nature of the objects being cut, so additional tools, from topology and algebra, need to be brought to bear. Our result makes significant progress towards resolving a decades-old open problem in computational geometry, motivated by hidden-surface removal in computer graphics. In addition, we generalize our bound to well-behaved patches of two-dimensional algebraic surfaces of constant degree.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Ahead of Print. The random geometric graph model [math] is a distribution over graphs in which the edges capture a latent geometry. To sample [math], we identify each of our [math] vertices with an independently and uniformly sampled vector from the [math]-dimensional unit sphere [math], and we connect pairs of vertices whose vectors are "sufficiently close," such that the marginal probability of an edge is [math]. Because of the underlying geometry, this model is natural for applications in data science and beyond. We investigate the problem of testing for this latent geometry, or, in other words, distinguishing an Erdős–Rényi graph [math] from a random geometric graph [math]. It is not too difficult to show that if [math] while [math] is held fixed, the two distributions become indistinguishable; we wish to understand how fast [math] must grow as a function of [math] for indistinguishability to occur. When [math] for constant [math], we prove that if [math], the total variation distance between the two distributions is close to 0; this improves upon the best previous bound of Brennan, Bresler, and Nagaraj (2020), which required [math], and further our result is nearly tight, resolving a conjecture of Bubeck, Ding, Eldan, and Rácz (2016) up to logarithmic factors. We also obtain improved upper bounds on the statistical indistinguishability thresholds in [math] for the full range of [math] satisfying [math], improving upon the previous bounds by polynomial factors. Our analysis uses the belief propagation algorithm to characterize the distributions of (subsets of) the random vectors conditioned on producing a particular graph. In this sense, our analysis is connected to the "cavity method" from statistical physics. To analyze this process, we rely on novel sharp estimates for the area of the intersection of a random sphere cap with an arbitrary subset of [math], which we prove using optimal transport maps and entropy-transport inequalities on the unit sphere. We believe these techniques may be of independent interest.
