Abstract:In this proceeding we discuss the status of the currently running experiments and the capability of the future proposed experiments to study neutrino oscillation. In particular, we discuss the current results of the accelerator-based long-baseline experiments in the standard three-flavour scenario and for a scenario where one assumes the existence of a light sterile neutrino at the eV scale in addition to the three active neutrinos. Further, we also discuss the capability of the future long-baseline experiments to study these scenarios.

Abstract:We perform a global analysis of neutrino oscillation data in the framework of three neutrinos, including the recent improved measurement of the neutral current events at SNO. In addition to all current solar neutrino data we take into account the reactor neutrino data from KamLAND and CHOOZ, the atmospheric neutrino data from Super-Kamiokande and MACRO, as well as the first spectral data from the K2K long baseline accelerator experiment. The up-to-date best fit values and allowed ranges of the three-flavour oscillation parameters are determined from these data. Furthermore, we discuss in detail the status of the small parameters alpha = Delta_m^2_Sol / Delta_m^2_Atm and sin^2(theta_13), which fix the possible strength of CP violating effects in neutrino oscillations.

Abstract:This pedagogical overview will cover the current status of neutrino physics from an experimentalist's point of view, focusing primarily on oscillation studies. The evidence for neutrino oscillations will be presented, along with the prospects for further refinement of observations in each of the indicated regions of two-flavor oscillation parameter space. The next steps in oscillation physics will then be covered (under the assumption of three-flavor mixing): the quest for $\theta_{13}$, mass hierarchy and, eventually, leptonic CP violation. Prospects for non-oscillation aspects of neutrino physics, such as kinematic tests for absolute neutrino mass and double beta decay searches, will also be discussed briefly.

The model of neutrino oscillations has now been established with high confidence, with many of the model parameters measured to an accuracy of a few per cent. However, some parameters still remain unknown, notably the mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ and the amount of CP violation. Recently, new questions have come to light, highlighting possibilities to search for new physics in the neutrino sector.

Abstract:The atmospheric muon neutrino deficit, which was possible evidence of $\nu_\mu \leftrightarrow \nu_\tau$ oscillation, was reported by the Kamiokande experiment from 1988. Many experimental efforts were made to examine the Kamiokande results. Experiments which contributed to the confirmation of $\nu_\mu \leftrightarrow \nu_\tau$ oscillation are reviewed. Especially, long-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiments are described in detail.

Abstract:We review the status of the neutrino oscillation physics (as of June 2003), with a particular emphasis on the present knowledge of the neutrino mass-mixing parameters in a three generation approach. We consider first the nu_mu-->nu_tau flavor transitions of atmospheric neutrinos. It is found that standard oscillations provide the best description of the SK+K2K data, and that the associated mass-mixing parameters are determined at 1 sigma (and dof=1) as: Delta m^2=(2.6 +-0.4) x 10^-3 eV^2 and sin^2(2theta)=1.00+0.00-0.05. Such indications, presently dominated by SK, could be strengthened by further K2K data. Then we analyze the energy spectrum of reactor neutrino events recently observed at KamLAND and combine them with solar and terrestrial neutrino data. We find that the solution to the solar neutrino problem at large mixing angle (LMA) is basically split into two sub-regions, that we denote as LMA-I and LMA-II. The LMA-I solution, characterized by lower values of the squared neutrino mass gap, is favored by the global data fit. Finally, we briefly illustrate how prospective data from the SNO and KamLAND can increase our confidence in the occurrence of standard matter effects in the Sun, which are starting to emerge from current data.

Abstract:The Sun is a source of high energy neutrinos (E > 10 GeV) produced by cosmic ray interactions in the solar atmosphere. We study the impact of three-flavor oscillations (in vacuum and in matter) on solar atmosphere neutrinos, and calculate their observable fluxes at Earth, as well as their event rates in a kilometer-scale detector in water or ice. We find that peculiar three-flavor oscillation effects in matter, which can occur in the energy range probed by solar atmosphere neutrinos, are significantly suppressed by averaging over the production region and over the neutrino and antineutrino components. In particular, we find that the relation between the neutrino fluxes at the Sun and at the Earth can be approximately expressed in terms of phase-averaged ``vacuum'' oscillations, dominated by a single mixing parameter (the angle theta_23).

Abstract:After two decades of measurements, neutrino physics is now advancing into the precision era. Withthe long-baseline experiments designed to tackle current open questions, a new query arises: can atmospheric neutrino experiments also play a role? To that end, we analyze the expected sensitivity of current and near-future water(ice)-Cherenkov atmospheric neutrino experiments in the context of standard three-flavor neutrino oscillations. In this first in depth combined atmospheric neutrino analysis, we analyze the current shared systematic uncertainties arising from the common flux and neutrino-water interactions. We then implement the systematic uncertainties of each experiment in detail and develop the atmospheric neutrino simulations for Super-Kamiokande, with and without neutron-tagging capabilities, IceCube Upgrade, ORCA, and Hyper-Kamiokande detectors. We carefully review the synergies and features of these experiments to examine the potential of a joint analysis of these atmospheric neutrino data in resolving the $\theta_{23}$ octant at 99% confidence level, and determining the neutrino mass ordering above 5$\sigma$ by 2030. Additionally, we assess the capability to constrain $\theta_{13}$ and the CP -violating phase ($\delta_{CP}$) in the leptonic sector independently from reactor and accelerator neutrino data. A combination of the atmospheric neutrino measurements will enhance the sensitivity to a greater extent than the simple sum of individual experiment results reaching more than 3$\sigma$ for some values of $\delta_{CP}$ . These results will provide vital information for next-generation accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments such as DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande.

Abstract:We describe the current status of solar neutrino measurements and of the theory -- both neutrino physics and solar astrophysics -- employed in interpreting measurements. Important recent developments include Super-Kamiokande's determination of the neutrino-electron elastic scattering rate for 8B neutrinos to 3%; the latest SNO global analysis in which the inclusion of low-energy data from SNO I and II significantly narrowed the range of allowed values for the neutrino mixing angle theta12; Borexino results for both the 7Be and pep neutrino fluxes, the first direct measurements constraining the rate of ppI and ppII burning in the Sun; global reanalyses of solar neutrino data that take into account new reactor results on theta13; a new decadal evaluation of the nuclear physics of the pp chain and CNO cycle defining best values and uncertainties in the nuclear microphysics input to solar models; recognition of an emerging discrepancy between two tests of solar metallicity, helioseismological mappings of the sound speed in the solar interior, and analyses of the metal photoabsorption lines based on our best current description of the Sun's photosphere; a new round of standard solar model calculations optimized to agree either with helioseismology or with the new photospheric analysis; and, motivated by the solar abundance problem, the development of nonstandard, accreting solar models, in order to investigate possible consequences of the metal segregation that occurred in the proto-solar disk. We review this progress and describe how new experiments such as SNO+ could help us further exploit neutrinos as a unique probe of stellar interiors.

Abstract:We review the basic mechanisms of neutrino mass generation and the corresponding structure of the lepton mixing matrix. We summarize the status of three-neutrino oscillation parameters as determined from current observations, using state-of-the-art solar and atmospheric neutrino fluxes, as well as latest experimental data as of September 2007. We also comment on recent attempts to account for these results and to understand flavour from first principles. We discuss extensively the prospects for probing the strength of CP violation in two near term accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments, T2K and NOvA, as well as possible extensions such as T2KK and a second large off-axis detector near the NOvA detector. We also briefly discuss the possibility of probing the effect of Majorana phases in future neutrinoless double beta decay searches and discuss other implications of leptonic CP violation such as leptogenesis. Finally we comment on the issue of robustness of the current oscillation interpretation and possible ways of probing for non-standard neutrino interactions in precision oscillation studies.
