Abstract:We present an analysis of high quality spectra of members of the young cluster M35. By using a multi-fiber spectrograph, we are able to collect high signal-to-noise, high resolution spectra of a sample of photometric candidate members. Accurate radial velocities are used to establish the membership status and rotational velocities are measured using cross-correlation. We also derive the metal content of the cluster, [Fe/H]= -0.21$\pm$0.10, based on spectral synthesis. Finally, we derive the lithium abundances of the bona fide cluster members and compare the results with members of other clusters. For example, M35 shows a smaller range in both rotation rates and lithium abundances as compared to the Pleiades. We discuss possible roles of various parameters. Our high quality M35 database of lithium abundances and rotational velocities are perfectly suited to be used as a laboratory to test theoretical models dealing with the lithium depletion phenomenon.

Abstract:M\,39 is a nearby young open cluster hardly studied in the last few decades. No giant is known among its members and its chemical composition has never been studied. In order to investigate it, we performed high-resolution spectroscopy of 20 expected cluster members with the HARPS and FIES spectrographs. By combining our observations with archival photometry and $Gaia$-DR3 data we searched for evolved members and studied cluster properties such as the radial velocity, extinction, and age. For the first time, we provide stellar parameters and chemical abundances for 21 species with atomic numbers up to 56. We have not found any new giant as a likely member and we notice a negligible reddening along the cluster field, which we place at 300\,pc. We obtain a mean radial velocity for M\,39 of $-$5.5pm $ and an isochrone-fitting age of 430\,pm \,110 Ma, which corresponds to a MSTO mass of around 2.8 sun $. This value is consistent with the Li content and chromospheric activity shown by its members. Based on main-sequence stars, the cluster exhibits a solar composition Fe/H =$+$0.04pm 0.08\,dex, compatible with its Galactocentric location. However, it has a slightly subsolar abundance of Na and an enriched content of neutron-capture elements, specially Ba. In any case, the chemical composition of M\,39 is fully compatible with that shown by other open clusters that populate the Galactic thin disc.

Abstract:We aim at identifying the cluster's members by deriving membership probabilities for the sources within 1 degree of the cluster's center, going further away than equivalent previous studies. We measure accurate proper motions and multi-wavelength (optical and near-infrared) photometry using ground based archival images of the cluster. We use these measurements to compute membership probabilities. The list of candidate members from Barrado+2001 is used as training set to identify the cluster's locus in a multi-dimensional space made of proper motions, luminosities and colors. The final catalog includes 338892 sources with multi-wavelength photometry. Approximately half (194452) were detected at more than two epochs and we measured their proper motion and used it to derive membership probability. A total of 4349 candidate members with membership probabilities greater than 50% are found in this sample in the luminosity range between 10 and 22mag. The slow proper motion of the cluster and the overlap of its sequence with the field and background sequences in almost all color-magnitude and color-color diagrams complicate the analysis and the contamination level is expected to be significant. Our study nevertheless provides a coherent and quantitative membership analysis of Messier 35 based on a large fraction of the best ground-based data sets obtained over the past 18 years. As such, it represents a valuable input for follow-up studies using in particular the Kepler K2 photometric time series.
Lithium, rotation and metallicity in the open cluster M35

Abstract:Lithium (Li) abundance is an age indicator for G, K, and M stellar types, as its abundance decreases over time for these spectral types. However, despite the observational efforts made over the past few decades, the role of rotation, activity, and metallicity in the depletion of Li is still unclear. We have investigated how Li depletion is affected by rotation and metallicity in G and K members of the roughly Pleiades-aged open cluster M35. To do so, we have collected a sample of 165 candidate members observed with the WIYN/Hydra spectrograph. In addition, we have taken advantage of three previous spectroscopic studies of Li in M35. As a result, we have collected a final sample of 396 stars which we have classified as members and non-members of the cluster. We have measured iron abundances, Li equivalent widths, and Li abundances for the 110 M35 members added to the existing sample by this study. Finally, rotation periods for cluster members have been obtained from the literature or derived from Zwicky Transient Facility light curves. As a result, we have confirmed that fast G and K rotators are Li-rich in comparison with slow rotators of similar effective temperature. Furthermore, while we derived subsolar metallicity for M35 from our spectra, the distribution of Li in this cluster is similar to those observed for the Pleiades and M34, which have solar metallicity and slightly different ages. In addition, we have shown that an empirical relationship proposed to remove the contribution of the Fe I line at 670.75 nm to the blended feature at 670.78 nm overestimates the contribution of this iron line for M35 members. We conclude that a 0.2-0.3 dex difference in metallicity makes little difference in the Li distributions of open clusters with ages between 100 and 250 Myr.

Abstract:Context. We present a photometric and astrometric catalog of 187 963 stars located in the field around the old super-metal-rich Galactic open cluster NGC 6253. The total field-of-view covered by the catalog is 34”33”. In this field, we provide CCD BVRI photometry. For a smaller region close to the cluster's center, we also provide near-infrared JHK photometry. Aims. We analyze the properties of NGC 6253 by using our new photometric data and astrometric membership. Methods. In June 2004, we targeted the cluster during a 10 day multi-site campaign, which involved the MPG/ESO 2.2 m telescope with its wide-field imager and the Anglo-Australian 3.9 m telescope, equipped with the IRIS2 near-infrared imager. Archival CCD images of NGC 6253 were used to derive relative proper motions and to calculate the cluster membership probabilities. Results. We have refined the cluster's fundamental parameters, deriving , , , , and . The color excess ratios obtained using both the optical and near infrared colors indicate a normal reddening law in the direction of NGC 6253. The age of NGC 6253 at 3.5 Gyr, determined from our best-fitting isochrone appears to be slightly older than the previous estimates. Finally, we estimated the binary fraction among the cluster members to be ~20%-30% and identified 11 blue straggler candidates.

Exploring NGC 2345: A Comprehensive Study of a Young Open Cluster through Photometric and Kinematic Analysis

Abstract:We conducted a photometric and kinematic analysis of the young open cluster NGC 2345 using CCD \emph{UBV} data from 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT), \emph{Gaia} Data Release 3 (DR3), 2MASS, and the APASS datasets. We found 1732 most probable cluster members with membership probability higher than 70$\%$. The fundamental and structural parameters of the cluster are determined based on the cluster members. The mean proper motion of the cluster is estimated to be $\mu_{\alpha}cos\delta$ = ${-1.34}\pm0.20$ and $\mu_{\delta}$= $1.35\pm 0.21$ mas $yr^{-1}$. Based on the radial density profile, the estimated radius is $\sim$ 12.8 arcmin (10.37 pc). Using color-color and color-magnitude diagrams, we estimate the reddening, age, and distance to be $0.63\pm0.04$ mag, 63 $\pm$ 8 Myr, and 2.78 $\pm$ 0.78 kpc, respectively. The mass function slope for main-sequence stars is determined as $1.2\pm 0.1$. The mass function slope in the core, halo, and overall region indicates a possible hint of mass segregation. The cluster's dynamical relaxation time is 177.6 Myr, meaning ongoing mass segregation, with complete equilibrium expected in 100-110 Myr. Apex coordinates are determined as $-40^{\circ}.89 \pm 0.12, -44^{\circ}.99 \pm 0.15$. The cluster's orbit in the Galaxy suggests early dissociation in field stars due to its close proximity to the Galactic disk.

Fundamental properties of the open cluster NGC 2355

Abstract:NGC 2355 is an old open cluster in the outer part of the galactic disk (l=203 deg, b=+11 deg) which has been little studied until now. This paper presents the first astrometric and spectroscopic investigation of this cluster. We have measured precise absolute proper motions from old Carte du Ciel plates, POSS-I plates and recent CCD observations obtained with the Bordeaux meridian circle. The proper motion data reveal 38 highly probable cluster members down to B=15 mag within 7' of the cluster center. We have also obtained ELODIE high resolution spectra for 24 stars. Seventeen of them are confirmed to be members of the cluster on the basis of radial velocity. Eight of them are fast rotating turnoff stars for which the projected rotational velocity has been determined. The spectroscopic observations have also provided estimates of the physical parameters Teff, log(g), [Fe/H], Mv of the 24 target stars. Two stragglers have been identified in the cluster. Combining our astrometric and spectroscopic results with previous UBV photometry and recent JHKs photometry from the 2MASS survey we have derived the fundamental properties of the cluster : metallicity, age, distance, size, spatial velocity and orbit.

Abstract:We present this paper in conjuction with the following as the first results in the CFHT Open Star Cluster Survey. This survey is a large BVR imaging data set of 19 open star clusters in our Galaxy. This data set was taken with the CFH12K mosaic CCD (42' X 28') and the majority of the clusters were imaged under excellent photometric, sub-arcsecond seeing conditions. The combination of multiple exposures extending to deep (V ~ 25) magnitudes with short (< 10 second) frames allows for many different studies. The primary aim of this survey is to catalogue the white dwarf stars in these clusters and establish observational constraints on the initial-final mass relationship for these stars and the upper mass limit to white dwarf production. Additionally, we hope to better determine the properties of the clusters, such as age and distance, and also test evolution and dynamical theories by analyzing luminosity and mass functions. In order to more easily incorporate this data in further studies, we have produced a catalogue of positions, magnitudes, colors, and stellarity confidence for all stars in each cluster of the survey. This paper is intended both as a source for the astronomical community to obtain information on the clusters in the survey and as a detailed reference of reduction procedures for further publications of individual clusters. We discuss the methods employed to reduce the data and compute the photometric catalogue. The scientific results for each individual cluster and global results from the study of the entire survey will be presented in further publications (results for the rich old open cluster NGC 6819 immediately follow this paper).

Abstract:A new survey of star clusters in the South-West field of the M31 disk based on the high resolution Subaru Suprime-Cam observations is presented. The UBVRI aperture CCD photometry catalog of 285 objects (V < 20.5; 169 of them identified for the first time) is provided. Each object is supplemented with multi-band color maps presented in the electronic edition of the Astrophysical Journal Supplement. Seventy seven star cluster candidates from the catalog are located in the Hubble Space Telescope archive frames.
The substellar mass function in the central region of the open cluster Praesepe from deep LBT observations

Abstract:Studies of the mass function (MF) of open clusters of different ages allow us to probe the efficiency with which brown dwarfs (BDs) are evaporated from clusters to populate the field. Surveys in old clusters (age > 100 Myr) do not suffer so severely from several problems encountered in young clusters, such as intra-cluster extinction and large uncertainties in BD models. Here we present the results of a deep photometric survey to study the MF of the old open cluster Praesepe (age 590 Myr and distance 190 pc), down to a 5 sigma detection limit at i~25.6 mag (~40M_Jup). We identify 62 cluster member candidates, of which 40 are substellar, from comparison with predictions from a dusty atmosphere model. The MF rises from the substellar boundary until ~60M_Jup and then declines. This is quite different from the form inferred for other open clusters older than 50 Myr, but seems to be similar to those found in very young open cluster, whose MFs peak at ~10M_Jup. Either Praesepe really does have a different MF from other clusters or they had similar initial MFs but have differed in their dynamical evolution. We further have identified six foreground T dwarf candidates towards Praesepe, which require follow-up spectroscopy to confirm their nature.

New $ubvri$ photometry of 234 M33 star clusters

Abstract:This is the second paper of our series. In this paper, we present $UBVRI$ photometry for 234 star clusters in the field of M33. For most of these star clusters, there is photometry in only two bands in previous studies. The photometry of these star clusters is performed using archival images from the Local Group Galaxies Survey, which covers 0.8 deg$^2$ along the major axis of M33. Detailed comparisons show that, in general, our photometry is consistent with previous measurements, especially, our photometry is in good agreement with Zloczewski & Kaluzny. Combined with the star clusters' photometry in previous studies, we present some results: none of the M33 youngest clusters ($\sim 10^7$ yr) have masses approaching $10^5$ $M_{\odot}$; comparisons with models of simple stellar populations suggest a large range of ages of M33 star clusters, and some as old as the Galactic globular clusters.

Abstract:The present study of the open cluster Collinder 223 (Cr 223) has been mainly depended on the photoelectric data of Claria & Lapasset (1991; hereafter CL91). This data of CL91 has been used with the cluster's image of AAO-DSS in order to re-investigate and improve the main parameters of Cr 223. Stellar count has been achieved to determine the stellar density, the cluster's center and the cluster's diameter. In addition, the luminosity function, mass function, and the total mass of the cluster have been estimated.

Wide-Field CCD Photometry of the Globular Cluster M30

Abstract:We present new VI photometry for the halo globular cluster M30 (NGC 7099), and compute luminosity functions (LFs) in both bands for samples of about 15,000 hydrogen-burning stars from near the tip of the red giant branch (RGB) to over four magnitudes below the main-sequence (MS) turnoff. We confirm previously observed features of the LF that are at odds with canonical theoretical predictions: an excess of stars on subgiant branch (SGB) approximately 0.4 mag above the turnoff and an excess number of RGB stars relative to MS stars. Based on subdwarfs with Hipparcos-measured parallaxes, we compute apparent distance moduli of (m-M)_{V} = 14.87+/-0.12 and 14.65+/-0.12 for reddenings of E(V-I)=0.06 and 0.02 respectively. The implied luminosity for the horizontal branch (HB) at these distances is M_V(HB)=0.11 and 0.37 mag. The two helium indicators we have been able to measure (R and Delta) both indicate that M30's helium content is high relative to other clusters of similar metallicity. M30 has a larger value for the parameter Delta V_{TO}^{HB} than any of the other similarly metal-poor clusters for which this quantity can be reliably measured. This suggests that M30 has either a larger age or higher helium content than all of the other metal-poor clusters examined. The color-difference method for measuring relative ages indicates that M30 is coeval with the metal-poor clusters M68 and M92.

The broadening of the main sequence in the open cluster M38

Abstract:Our recent multi-band photometric study of the colour width of the lower main sequence of the open cluster M37 has revealed the presence of a sizeable initial chemical composition spread in the cluster. If initial chemical composition spreads are common amongst open clusters, this would have major implications for cluster formation models and the foundation of the chemical tagging technique. Here we present a study of the unevolved main sequence of the open cluster M38, employing Gaia DR3 photometry and astrometry, together with newly acquired Sloan photometry. We have analysed the distribution of the cluster's lower main sequence stars with a differential colour-colour diagram made of combinations of Gaia and Sloan magnitudes, like in the study of M37. We employed synthetic stellar populations to reproduce the observed trend of M38 stars in this diagram, and found that the observed colour spreads can be explained simply by the combined effect of differential reddening across the face of the cluster and the presence of unresolved binaries. There is no need to include in the synthetic sample a spread of initial chemical composition as instead necessary to explain the main sequence of M37. Further photometric investigations like ours, as well as accurate differential spectroscopic analyses on large samples of open clusters, are necessary to understand whether chemical abundance spreads are common among the open cluster population.

An updated catalog of M33 clusters and candidates: $UBVRI$ photometry, and some statistical results

Abstract:We present $UBVRI$ photometry for 392 star clusters and candidates in the field of M33, which are selected from the most recent star cluster catalog. In this catalog, the authors listed star clusters' parameters such as cluster positions, magnitudes and colors in the $UBVRIJHK_s$ filters, and so on. However, a large fraction of objects in this catalog do not have previously published photometry. Photometry is performed using archival images from the Local Group Galaxies Survey, which covers 0.8 deg$^2$ along the major axis of M33. Detailed comparisons show that, in general, our photometry is consistent with previous measurements. Positions (right ascension and declination) for some clusters are corrected here. Combined with previous literature, we constitute a large sample of M33 star clusters. Based on this cluster sample, we present some statistical results: none of the M33 youngest clusters ($\sim 10^7$ yr) have masses approaching $10^5$ $M_{\odot}$; roughly half the star clusters are consistent with the $10^4$ to $10^5$ $M_{\odot}$ mass models; the continuous distribution of star clusters along the model line indicates that M33 star clusters have been formed continuously from the epoch of the first star cluster formation until recent times; there are $\sim 50$ star clusters which being overlapped with the Galactic globular clusters on the color-color diagram, and these clusters are old globular clusters candidates in M33.

Abstract:Abstract We present a photometric study of the neglected open cluster Berkeley 53. We derived its fundamental parameters, such as the age, the interstellar reddening, and the distance from the Sun, based on BV photometry combined with near‐infrared JHK S data. The structure and the mass function of the cluster were also studied and the total number of members and the total mass were estimated. The cluster was found to be a rich and massive stellar system, located in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way, 3.1 ± 0.1 kpc from the Sun. Its age exceeds 1 Gy but it seems tobe very young in the context of its dynamical evolution. The analysis of the two‐color diagrams and color‐magnitude diagrams indicates that the cluster is significantly reddened. However, both methods resulted in different values of E ( B – V ), i.e. 1.21 ± 0.04 and 1.52 ± 0.01, respectively. This discrepancy suggests the presence of an abnormal interstellar extinction law toward the cluster (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Revisiting the old end of the Milky Way open cluster age function

Abstract:The age distribution of the open cluster system is a key piece of information to decipher the star formation history of the Milky Way disk. Recently, a remarkable earlier drop of its older end was found, which caught our attention. Precisely, we analyzed in detail the population of open clusters older than 1 Gyr located inside a circle of 2.0 kpc from the Sun contained in the Milky Way Star Cluster catalog, using the Data Release 3.0 of the Gaia survey, and found that it contains a slightly larger old open cluster population with respect to that witnessing the earlier drop age distribution. However, there are still some aspects that deserve further attention in order to undoubtedly handle a statistically complete cluster sample, that allows us to comprehensively know the older end of the open cluster age distribution function. We discuss some reasons that affect such a completeness, among them, the photometric depth of the database employed, the performance of machine learning techniques used to recognize open clusters, the cleaning of cluster color-magnitude diagrams from field star contamination, etc.
