Abstract:Non(anti)commutative gauge theories are supersymmetric Yang-Mills and matter system defined on a deformed superspace whose coordinates obey non(anti)commutative algebra. We prove that these theories in four dimensions with N=1/2 supersymmetry are renormalizable to all orders in perturbation theory. Our proof is based on operator analysis and symmetry arguments. In a case when the Grassman-even coordinates are commutative, deformation induced by non(anti)commutativity of the Grassman-odd coordinates contains operators of dimension-four or higher. Nevertheless, they do not lead to power divergences in a loop diagram because of absence of operators Hermitian-conjugate to them. In a case when the Grassman-even coordinates are noncommutative, the ultraviolet-infrared mixing makes the theory renormalizable by the planar diagrams, and the deformed operators are not renormalized at all. We also elucidate relation at quantum level between non(anti)commutative deformation and N=1/2 supersymmetry. We point out that the star product structure dictates a specific relation for renormalization among the deformed operators.
Emergent non-invertible symmetries in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory

Abstract:One of the simplest examples of non-invertible symmetries in higher dimensions appears in 4d Maxwell theory, where its $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality group can be combined with gauging subgroups of its electric and magnetic 1-form symmetries to yield such defects at many different values of the coupling. Even though $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory also has an $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality group, it only seems to share two types of such non-invertible defects with Maxwell theory (known as duality and triality defects). Motivated by this apparent difference, we begin our investigation of the fate of these symmetries by studying the case of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $U(1)$ gauge theory which contains Maxwell theory in its content. Surprisingly, we find that the non-invertible defects of Maxwell theory give rise, when combined with the standard $U(1)$ symmetry acting on the free fermions, to defects which act on local operators as elements of the $U(1)$ outer-automorphism of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal algebra, an operation that was referred to in the past as the "bonus symmetry". Turning to the nonabelian case of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, the bonus symmetry is not an exact symmetry of the theory but is known to emerge at the supergravity limit. Based on this observation we study this limit and show that if it is taken in a certain way, non-invertible defects that realize different elements of the bonus symmetry emerge as approximate symmetries, in analogy to the abelian case.

Abstract:A connection between the gauge fixed dynamics of protected operators in superconformal Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions and Calogero systems is established. This connection generalizes the free Fermion description of the chiral primary operators of the gauge theory formed out of a single complex scalar to more general operators. In particular, a detailed analysis of protected operators charged under an su(1|1)contained in psu(2,2|4) is carried out and a class of operators is identified, whose dynamics is described by the rational super-Calogero model. These results are generalized to arbitrary BPS operators charged under an su(2|3) of the superconformal algebra. Analysis of the non-local symmetries of the super-Calogero model is also carried out, and it is shown that symmetry for a large class of protected operators is a contraction of the corresponding Yangian algebra to a loop algebra.
Exceptionally simple integrated correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

Abstract:Supersymmetric localisation has led to several modern developments in the study of integrated correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. In particular, exact results have been derived for certain integrated four-point functions of superconformal primary operators in the stress tensor multiplet valid for all classical gauge groups, $SU(N)$, $SO(N)$, and $USp(2N)$, and for all values of the complex coupling, $\tau=\theta/(2\pi)+4\pi i/g^2_{_{YM}}$. In this work we extend this analysis and provide a unified two-dimensional lattice sum representation for all simple gauge groups, in particular for the exceptional series $E_r$ (with $r=6,7,8$), $F_4$ and $G_2$. These expressions are manifestly covariant under Goddard-Nuyts-Olive duality which for $F_4$ and $G_2$ is given by particular Fuchsian groups. We show that the perturbation expansion of these integrated correlators is universal in the sense that it can be written as a single function of three parameters, called Vogel parameters, and a suitable 't Hooft-like coupling. To obtain the perturbative expansion for the integrated correlator with a given gauge group we simply need substituting in this universal expression specific values for the Vogel parameters. At the non-perturbative level we conjecture a formula for the one-instanton Nekrasov partition function with simple gauge group and general $\Omega$-deformation background. We check that our expression reduces in various limits to known results and that it produces, via supersymmetric localisation, the same one-instanton contribution to the integrated correlator as the one derived from the lattice sum. Finally, we consider the action of the hyperbolic Laplace operator in $\tau$ on the integrated correlators with exceptional gauge groups and derive inhomogeneous Laplace equations very similar to the ones previously obtained for classical gauge groups.

On the two-loop four-derivative quantum corrections in 4D N = 2 superconformal field theories

Abstract:In \cN = 2, 4 superconformal field theories in four space-time dimensions, the quantum corrections with four derivatives are believed to be severely constrained by non-renormalization theorems. The strongest of these is the conjecture formulated by Dine and Seiberg in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/9705057" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/9705057">hep-th/9705057</a> that such terms are generated only at one loop. In this note, using the background field formulation in \cN = 1 superspace, we test the Dine-Seiberg proposal by comparing the two-loop F^4 quantum corrections in two different superconformal theories with the same gauge group SU(N): (i) \cN = 4 SYM (i.e. \cN = 2 SYM with a single adjoint hypermultiplet); (ii) \cN = 2 SYM with 2N hypermultiplets in the fundamental. According to the Dine-Seiberg conjecture, these theories should yield identical two-loop F^4 contributions from all the supergraphs involving quantum hypermultiplets, since the pure \cN = 2 SYM and ghost sectors are identical provided the same gauge conditions are chosen. We explicitly evaluate the relevant two-loop supergraphs and observe that the F^4 corrections generated have different large N behaviour in the two theories under consideration. Our results are in conflict with the Dine-Seiberg conjecture.

Single Particle Operators and their Correlators in Free $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

Abstract:We consider a set of half-BPS operators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory which are appropriate for describing single-particle states of superstring theory on AdS${}_5 \times S^5$. These single-particle operators are defined to have vanishing two-point functions with all multi-trace operators and therefore correspond to admixtures of single- and multi-traces. We find explicit formulae for all single-particle operators and for their two-point function normalisation. We show that single-particle $U(N)$ operators belong to the $SU(N)$ subspace, thus for length greater than one they are simply the $SU(N)$ single-particle operators. Then, we point out that at large $N$, as the length of the operator increases, the single-particle operator naturally interpolates between the single-trace and the $S^3$ giant graviton. At finite $N$, the multi-particle basis, obtained by taking products of the single-particle operators, gives a new basis for all half-BPS states, and this new basis naturally cuts off when the length of any of the single-particle operators exceeds the number of colours. From the two-point function orthogonality we prove a multipoint orthogonality theorem which implies vanishing of all near-extremal correlators. We then compute all maximally and next-to-maximally extremal free correlators, and we discuss features of the correlators when the extremality is lowered. Finally, we describe a half-BPS projection of the operator product expansion on the multi-particle basis which provides an alternative construction of four- and higher-point functions in the free theory.

Abstract:Soft theorems for the form factors of 1/2-BPS and Konishi operator supermultiplets are derived at tree level in N=4 SYM theory. They have a form identical to the one in the amplitude case. For MHV sectors of stress tensor and Konishi supermultiplets loop corrections to soft theorems are considered at one loop level. They also appear to have universal form in soft limit. Possible generalization of the on-shell diagrams to the form factors based on leading soft behavior is suggested. Finally, we give some comments on inverse soft limit and integrability of form factors in the limit $q^2\to 0$

Superconformal Monodromy Defects in $\mathcal{N}$=4 SYM and LS theory

Abstract:We study type IIB supergravity solutions that are dual to two-dimensional superconformal defects in $d=4$ SCFTs which preserve $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetry. We consider solutions dual to defects in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory that have non-trivial monodromy for $U(1)^3\subset SO(6)$ global symmetry and we also allow for the possibility of conical singularities. In addition, we consider the addition of fermionic and bosonic mass terms that have non trivial dependence on the spatial directions transverse to the defect, while preserving the superconformal symmetry of the defect. We compute various physical quantities including the central charges of the defect expressed as a function of the monodromy, the on-shell action as well as associated supersymmetric Renyi entropies. Analogous computations are carried out for superconformal defects in the $\mathcal{N}=1$, $d=4$ Leigh-Strassler SCFT. We also show that the defects of the two SCFTs are connected by a line of bulk marginal mass deformations and argue that they are also related by bulk RG flow.

Abstract:We continue the discussion of the decorated on-shell diagrammatics for planar N < 4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories started in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1510.03642" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1510.03642">arXiv:1510.03642</a>. In particular, we focus on its relation with the structure of varieties on the Grassmannian. The decoration of the on-shell diagrams, which physically keeps tracks of the helicity of the coherent states propagating along their edges, defines new on-shell functions on the Grassmannian and can introduce novel higher-order singularities, which graphically are reflected into the presence of helicity loops in the diagrams. These new structures turn out to have similar features as in the non-planar case: the related higher-codimension varieties are identified by either the vanishing of one (or more) Plucker coordinates involving at least two non-adjacent columns, or new relations among Plucker coordinates. A distinctive feature is that the functions living on these higher-codimenson varieties can be thought of distributionally as having support on derivative delta-functions. After a general discussion, we explore in some detail the structures of the on-shell functions on Gr(2,4) and Gr(3,6) on which the residue theorem allows to obtain a plethora of identities among them.

Abstract:Maximally supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory (N=4 SYM) is conformal for any value of the coupling. Lattice regularization breaks conformality through the introduction of a non-zero lattice spacing and a finite lattice volume. This proceedings presents ongoing numerical computations of conformal scaling dimensions in lattice N=4 SYM, based on a lattice formulation that exactly preserves a supersymmetry sub-algebra at non-zero lattice spacing. The main targets are the non-trivial anomalous dimension of the Konishi operator, as well as a mass anomalous dimension extracted from the eigenvalue mode number of the fermion operator. The latter is expected to vanish in the conformal continuum theory, providing insight into the interplay of lattice discretization and conformality.

Abstract:The conditions for fully supersymmetric backgrounds of general N=2 locally supersymmetric theories are derived based on the off-shell superconformal multiplet calculus. This enables the derivation of a non-renormalization theorem for a large class of supersymmetric invariants with higher-derivative couplings. The theorem implies that the invariant and its first order variation must vanish in a fully supersymmetric background. The conjectured relation of one particular higher-derivative invariant with a specific five-dimensional invariant containing the mixed gauge-gravitational Chern-Simons term is confirmed.

Non-planar integrated correlator in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

Abstract:Integrated correlator of four superconformal stress-tensor primaries in $SU(N)$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory in the perturbative limit takes a remarkably simple form, where the $L$-loop coefficient is given by a rational multiple of $\zeta(2L+1)$. In this letter, we extend the previous analysis of expressing the perturbative integrated correlator as a linear combination of periods of $f$-graphs, graphical representations for loop integrands, to the non-planar sector at four loops. At this loop order, multiple zeta values make their first appearance when evaluating periods of non-planar $f$-graphs, but cancel non-trivially in the weighted sum. The remaining single zeta value, along with the rational number prefactor, makes a perfect agreement with the prediction from supersymmmetric localisation.

On the spectrum and structure constants of short operators in N=4 SYM at strong coupling

Abstract:We study short operators in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM at strong coupling, for general spin and $SO(6)$ symmetric traceless representations. At strong coupling their dimension grows like $\Delta \sim 2\sqrt{\delta} \lambda^{1/4}$ and their spectrum of degeneracies can be analysed by considering the massive spectrum of type II strings in flat space-time. We furthermore compute their structure constants with two arbitrary chiral primary operators. This is done by considering the four-point correlator of arbitrary chiral primary operators at strong coupling in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, including the supergravity approximation plus the infinite tower of stringy corrections that contributes in the flat space limit. Our results are valid for generic rank $n$ symmetric traceless representations of $SO(6)$ and in particular for $n \gg 1$, as long as $n \ll \lambda^{1/4}$.

The Renormalization of Composite Operators in Yang-Mills Theories Using General Covariant Gauge

Abstract:Essential to QCD applications of the operator product expansion, etc., is a knowledge of those operators that mix with gauge-invariant operators. A standard theorem asserts that the renormalization matrix is triangular: Gauge-invariant operators have `alien' gauge-variant operators among their counterterms, but, with a suitably chosen basis, the necessary alien operators have only themselves as counterterms. Moreover, the alien operators are supposed to vanish in physical matrix elements. A recent calculation by Hamberg and van Neerven apparently contradicts these results. By explicit calculations with the energy-momentum tensor, we show that the problems arise because of subtle infra-red singularities that appear when gluonic matrix elements are taken on-shell at zero momentum transfer. Resonant Andreev reflections in superconductor-carbon-nanotube devices

Abstract:Resonant Andreev reflection through superconductor-carbon-nanotube devices was investigated theoretically with a focus on the superconducting proximity effect. Consistent with a recent experiment, we find that for high transparency devices on-resonance, the Andreev current is characterized by a large value and a resistance dip; low-transparency off-resonance devices give the opposite result. We also give evidence that the observed low-temperature transport anomaly may be a natural result of Andreev reflection process.

Abstract:We explore novel examples of RG flows preserving a non-invertible self-duality symmetry. Our main focus is on $\mathcal{N}=1$ quadratic superpotential deformations of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{su}(N)$. A theory that can be obtained in this way is the so-called $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ SYM where all adjoint chiral multiplets have a mass. Such IR theory exhibits a rich structure of vacua which we thoroughly examine. Our analysis elucidates the physics of spontaneous breaking of self-duality symmetry occurring in the degenerate gapped vacua. The construction can be generalized, taking as UV starting point a theory of class $\mathcal{S}$, to demonstrate how non-invertible self-duality symmetries exist in a variety of $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs. We finally apply this understanding to prove that the conifold theory has a non-invertible self-duality symmetry.

Abstract:Correlators of Wilson loop operators with O_4=Tr(F_{\mu\nu}^2+...) are computed in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The results are compared with the leading order perturbative computations. As a consequence of conformal invariance, these correlators have identical forms in the weak and strong coupling limits for circular loops. They are essentially different for contours not protected by conformal symmetry.

Abstract:We study d=4, $N\geq 5$ supergravities and their deformation via candidate counterterms, with the purpose to absorb UV divergences. We generalize the earlier studies of deformation and twisted self-duality constraint to the case with unbroken local H-symmetry in presence of fermions. We find that the deformed action breaks nonlinear local supersymmetry. We show that all known cases of enhanced UV divergence cancellations are explained by nonlinear local supersymmetry. This result implies, in particular, that if N=5 supergravity at five loop will turn out to be UV divergent, the deformed theory will be BRST inconsistent. If it will be finite, it will be a consequence of nonlinear local supersymmetry and E7-type duality.
