Abstract:Due to their fast decoding algorithms, quantum generalizations of low-density parity check, or LDPC, codes have been investigated as a solution to the problem of decoherence in fragile quantum states. However, the additional twisted inner product requirements of quantum stabilizer codes force four-cycles and eliminate the possibility of randomly generated quantum LDPC codes. Moreover, the classes of quantum LDPC codes discovered thus far generally have unknown or small minimum distance, or a fixed rate. This paper presents several new classes of quantum LDPC codes constructed from finite projective planes. These codes have rates that increase with the block length $n$ and minimum weights proportional to $n^{1/2}$.

Abstract:Quantum low-density parity-check codes can be decoded using a syndrome based $\mathrm{GF}(4)$ belief propagation decoder. However, the performance of this decoder is limited both by unavoidable $4$-cycles in the code's factor graph and the degenerate nature of quantum errors. For the subclass of CSS codes, the number of $4$-cycles can be reduced by breaking an error into an $X$ and $Z$ component and decoding each with an individual $\mathrm{GF}(2)$ based decoder. However, this comes at the expense of ignoring potential correlations between these two error components. We present a number of modified belief propagation decoders that address these issues. We propose a $\mathrm{GF}(2)$ based decoder for CSS codes that reintroduces error correlations by reattempting decoding with adjusted error probabilities. We also propose the use of an augmented decoder, which has previously been suggested for classical binary low-density parity-check codes. This decoder iteratively reattempts decoding on factor graphs that have a subset of their check nodes duplicated. The augmented decoder can be based on a $\mathrm{GF}(4)$ decoder for any code, a $\mathrm{GF}(2)$ decoder for CSS code, or even a supernode decoder for a dual-containing CSS code. For CSS codes, we further propose a $\mathrm{GF}(2)$ based decoder that combines the augmented decoder with error probability adjustment. We demonstrate the performance of these new decoders on a range of different codes, showing that they perform favorably compared to other decoders presented in literature.

This paper focuses on different strategies for the construction of QLDPC codes, which are based on all points and lines as well as partial points and lines from projective geometry. Finally, a series of simulation analyses are presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel low-density parity-check real-number code, based on compressed sensing. A real-valued message is encoded by a coding matrix (with more rows than columns) and transmitted over an erroneous channel, where sparse errors (impulsive noise) corrupt the codeword. In the decoding procedure, we apply a structured sparse (low-density) parity-check matrix, the Permuted Block Diagonal matrix, to the corrupted output, and the errors can be corrected by solving a compressed sensing problem. A compressed sensing algorithm, Cross Low-dimensional Pursuit, is used to decode the code by solving this compressed sensing problem. The proposed code has high error correction performance and decoding efficiency. The comparative experimental results demonstrate both advantages of our code. We also apply our code to cryptography.
Fault-tolerant quantum computing with the parity code and noise-biased qubits

Abstract:We present a fault-tolerant universal quantum computing architecture based on a code concatenation of noise-biased qubits and the parity architecture. The parity architecture can be understood as a LDPC code tailored specifically to obtain any desired logical connectivity from nearest neighbor physical interactions. The code layout can be dynamically adjusted to algorithmic requirements on-the-fly. This allows reaching arbitrary code distances and thereby exponential suppression of errors with a universal set of fault-tolerant gates. In addition to the previously explored tool-sets for concatenated cat codes, our approach features parallelizable interactions between arbitrary sets of qubits by directly addressing the parity qubits in the code. The proposed scheme enables codes with less physical qubit overhead compared to the repetition code with the same code distances, while requiring only weight-3 and weight-4 stabilizers and nearest neighbor 2D square-lattice connectivity.

Abstract:This paper introduces a construction of quantum CSS codes from a tuple of component CSS codes and two collections of subsets. The resulting codes have parallelizable encoding and syndrome measurement circuits and built-in redundancy in the syndrome measurements. In a certain subfamily of the general construction, the resulting codes are related to a natural generalization of classical Reed-Muller codes, and this leads to formulas for the distance of the quantum code as well as for the distance of the associated classical code that protects against errors in the syndrome. The paper gives a number of examples of codes with block size $2^m, m=3,\dots,9$, and with syndrome measurements involving 2, 4 or 8 qubits. These include codes for which the distance exceeds the syndrome measurement weight, as well as codes which provide asymmetric protection against bit flip and phase flip errors.

Abstract:Quantum error correction is necessary for achieving exponential speedups on important applications. The planar surface code has remained the most studied error-correcting code for the last two decades because of its relative simplicity. However, encoding a singular logical qubit with the planar surface code requires physical qubits quadratic in the code distance~($d$), making it space-inefficient for the large-distance codes necessary for promising applications. Thus, {\em Quantum Low-Density Parity-Check (QLDPC)} have emerged as an alternative to the planar surface code but require a higher degree of connectivity. Furthermore, the problems of fault-tolerant syndrome extraction and decoding are understudied for these codes and also remain obstacles to their usage. In this paper, we consider two under-studied families of QLDPC codes: hyperbolic surface codes and hyperbolic color codes. We tackle the three challenges mentioned above as follows. {\em First}, we propose {\em Flag-Proxy Networks (FPNs)}, a generalizable architecture for quantum codes that achieves low connectivity through flag and proxy qubits. {\em Second}, we propose a {\em greedy syndrome extraction scheduling} algorithm for general quantum codes and further use this algorithm for fault-tolerant syndrome extraction on FPNs. {\em Third}, we present two decoders that leverage flag measurements to decode the hyperbolic codes accurately. Our work finds that degree-4 FPNs of the hyperbolic surface and color codes are respectively $2.9\times$ and $5.5\times$ more space-efficient than the $d = 5$ planar surface code, and become even more space-efficient when considering higher distances. The hyperbolic codes also have error rates comparable to their planar counterparts.

Abstract:Fault-tolerant quantum computation demands significant resources: large numbers of physical qubits must be checked for errors repeatedly to protect quantum data as logic gates are implemented in the presence of noise. We demonstrate that an approach based on the color code can lead to considerable reductions in the resource overheads compared with conventional methods, while remaining compatible with a two-dimensional layout. We propose a lattice surgery scheme that exploits the rich structure of the color-code phase to perform arbitrary pairs of commuting logical Pauli measurements in parallel while keeping the space cost low. Compared to lattice surgery schemes based on the surface code with the same code distance, our approach yields about a $3\times$ improvement in the space-time overhead, obtained from a combination of a $1.5\times$ improvement in spatial overhead together with a $2\times$ speedup due to the parallelisation of commuting logical measurements. Even when taking into account the color code's lower error threshold using current decoders, the overhead is reduced by 10\% at a physical error rate of $10^{-3}$ and by 50\% at $10^{-4}$.

Constant Depth Code Deformations in the Parity Architecture

Abstract:We present a protocol to encode and decode arbitrary quantum states in the parity architecture with constant circuit depth using measurements, local nearest-neighbor and single-qubit operations only. While this procedure typically requires a quadratic overhead of simultaneous qubit measurements, it allows for a simple and low-depth implementation of logical multi-qubit gates in the parity encoding via code deformation. We discuss how such encoding and decoding schemes can be used to flexibly change the size and shape of the underlying code to enable a more efficient implementation of quantum gates or algorithms. We apply the new findings to the QAOA which leads to a constant depth implementation using local gates at the same optimization performance as the standard, potentially non-local, QAOA approach without the parity encoding. Furthermore, we show that our method can reduce the depth of implementing the quantum Fourier transform by a factor of two when allowing measurements.

Abstract:We investigate CSS and CSS-T quantum error-correcting codes from the point of view of their existence, rarity, and performance. We give a lower bound on the number of pairs of linear codes that give rise to a CSS code with good correction capability, showing that such pairs are easy to produce with a randomized construction. We then prove that CSS-T codes exhibit the opposite behaviour, showing also that, under very natural assumptions, their rate and relative distance cannot be simultaneously large. This partially answers an open question on the feasible parameters of CSS-T codes. We conclude with a simple construction of CSS-T codes from Hermitian curves. The paper also offers a concise introduction to CSS and CSS-T codes from the point of view of classical coding theory.

Abstract:We present a fault-tolerant [[8, 1, 3]] non-CSS quantum error correcting code and study its logical error rates. We choose the unitary encoding procedure for stabilizer codes given by Gottesman and modify it to suit the setting of a class of non- CSS codes. Considering two types of noise models for this study, namely the depolarising noise and anisotropic noise, to depict the logical error rates obtained in decoding, we adopt the procedure of the bare ancilla method presented by Brown et al. to reorder the measurement sequence in the syndrome extraction step and upgrade it to obtain higher pseudo-thresholds and lower leading order terms of logical error rates.

Abstract:Quantum low density parity check (LDPC) codes may provide a path to build low-overhead fault-tolerant quantum computers. However, as general LDPC codes lack geometric constraints, naïve layouts couple many distant qubits with crossing connections which could be hard to build in hardware and could result in performance-degrading crosstalk. We propose a 2D layout for quantum LDPC codes by decomposing their Tanner graphs into a small number of planar layers. Each layer contains long-range connections which do not cross. For any Calderbank-Shor-Steane code with a degree- δ Tanner graph, we design stabilizer measurement circuits with depth at most ( 2δ+2 ) using at most ⌈δ/2⌉ layers. We observe a circuit-noise threshold of 0.28% for a positive-rate code family using 49 physical qubits per logical qubit. For a physical error rate of 10−4 , this family reaches a logical error rate of 10−15 using fourteen times fewer physical qubits than the surface code. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.129.050504 © 2022 American Physical Society

Abstract:We establish dihedral quantum codes of short block length, a class of CSS codes obtained by the lifted product construction. We present the code construction and give a formula for the code dimension, depending on the two classical codes that the CSS code is based on. We also give a lower bound on the code distance and construct an example of short dihedral quantum codes.

Abstract:We give a new construction of binary quantum codes that enables the generation of a CSS-T code from any given CSS code. Using this construction, we prove the existence of asymptotically good binary CSS-T codes, resolving a previously open problem in the literature. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the same result holds for binary quantum low-density parity check CSS-T codes, and establish the existence of asymptotically good CSS codes that support any given $Z$ rotation transversally. Finally, we analyze the structure of the logical operators corresponding to certain non-Clifford gates supported by the quantum codes obtained from our construction.

Abstract:We construct a new explicit family of good quantum low-density parity-check codes which additionally have linear time decoders. Our codes are based on a three-term chain $(\mathbb{F}_2^{m\times m})^V \quad \xrightarrow{\delta^0}\quad (\mathbb{F}_2^{m})^{E} \quad\xrightarrow{\delta^1} \quad \mathbb{F}_2^F$ where $V$ ($X$-checks) are the vertices, $E$ (qubits) are the edges, and $F$ ($Z$-checks) are the squares of a left-right Cayley complex, and where the maps are defined based on a pair of constant-size random codes $C_A,C_B:\mathbb{F}_2^m\to\mathbb{F}_2^\Delta$ where $\Delta$ is the regularity of the underlying Cayley graphs. One of the main ingredients in the analysis is a proof of an essentially-optimal robustness property for the tensor product of two random codes.
General entropic constraints on CSS codes within magic distillation protocols

Abstract:Magic states are fundamental building blocks on the road to fault-tolerant quantum computing. CSS codes play a crucial role in the construction of magic distillation protocols. Previous work has cast quantum computing with magic states for odd dimension $d$ within a phase space setting in which universal quantum computing is described by the statistical mechanics of quasiprobability distributions. Here we extend this framework to the important $d=2$ qubit case and show that we can exploit common structures in CSS circuits to obtain distillation bounds capable of out-performing previous monotone bounds in regimes of practical interest. Moreover, in the case of CSS code projections, we arrive at a novel cut-off result on the code length $n$ of the CSS code in terms of parameters characterising a desired distillation, which implies that for fixed target error rate and acceptance probability, one needs only consider CSS codes below a threshold number of qubits. These entropic constraints are not due simply to the data-processing inequality but rely explicitly on the stochastic representation of such protocols.

Classical product code constructions for quantum Calderbank-Shor-Steane codes

Abstract:Several notions of code products are known in quantum error correction, such as hyper-graph products, homological products, lifted products, balanced products, to name a few. In this paper we introduce a new product code construction which is a natural generalisation of classical product codes to quantum codes: starting from a set of component Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS) codes, a larger CSS code is obtained where both $X$ parity checks and $Z$ parity checks are associated to classical product codes. We deduce several properties of product CSS codes from the properties of the component codes, including bounds to the code distance, and show that built-in redundancies in the parity checks result in so-called meta-checks which can be exploited to correct syndrome read-out errors. We then specialise to the case of single-parity-check (SPC) product codes which in the classical domain are a common choice for constructing product codes. Logical error rate simulations of a SPC $3$-fold product CSS code having parameters $[[512,174,8]]$ are shown under both a maximum likelihood decoder for the erasure channel and belief propagation decoding for depolarising noise. We compare the results with other codes of comparable length and dimension, including a code from the family of asymptotically good Tanner codes. We observe that our reference product CSS code outperforms all the other examined codes.
