Abstract:We investigate the flavour and quark-antiquark structure of the polarized nucleon by calculating the parton distribution functions of the nucleon sea using the meson cloud model. We find that the SU(2) flavor symmetry in the light antiquark sea and quark-antiquark symmetry in the strange quark sea are broken, {\it i.e.} $\Delta\ubar < \Delta \dbar$ and $\Delta s < \Delta \sbar$. The polarization of the strange sea is found to be positive, which is in contradiction to previous analyses. We predict a much larger quark-antiquark asymmetry in the polarized strange quark sea than that in the unpolarized strange quark sea. Our results for both polarized light quark sea and polarized strange quark sea are consistent with the recent HERMES data.

Abstract:We demonstrate, in the context of a scalar version of the chiral effective field theory, that the multi-sea quark contribution to the nucleon is significant and highly non-trivial in sharp contrast to the prediction of perturbation theory. The non-perturbative calculation is performed in the Fock sector dependent renormalization scheme on the light front, in which the non-perturbative renormalization is incorporated. The calculation suggests that a fully non-perturbative calculation of the chiral EFT is needed to obtain a robust result to be compared with the recent experimental measurement of flavor asymmetry in the proton.

Abstract:The Gottfried sum-rule violation reported by the New Muon Collaboration was interpreted as an indication for a flavor asymmetry of the sea quark in the nucleon. We investigate the alternative possibility that isospin symmetry between the proton and the neutron is breaking. We examine systematically the consequences of this possibility for several processes, namely, neutrino deep inelastic scattering, the charged pion Drell-Yan process, the proton Drell-Yan process, and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, and conclude that a decision between the two alternative explanations is possible.

Abstract:It is shown that the violation of the Gottfried sum rule could be due to the flavour distribution asymmetry in the sea of nucleons while preserving the isospin symmetry between the proton and the neutron, or alternatively, due to the isospin symmetry breaking between the proton and the neutron while preserving the flavour distribution symmetry in the sea of nucleons. A new sum is suggested to distinguish between the two possible explanations.

Abstract:Parton distributions derived from a chiral quark model that generates an excess of down quarks and antiquarks in the proton's sea satisfactorily describe the measured yields of muon pairs produced in proton-nucleus collisions. Abstract:Double-spin asymmetries of semi-inclusive cross sections for the production of identified pions and kaons have been measured in deep-inelastic scattering of polarized positrons on a polarized deuterium target. Five helicity distributions including those for three sea quark flavors were extracted from these data together with re-analyzed previous data for identified pions from a hydrogen target. These distributions are consistent with zero for all three sea flavors. A recently predicted flavor asymmetry in the polarization of the light quark sea appears to be disfavored by the data.

Abstract:We discuss two topics related to the flavor structure of the nucleon sea. The first is on the identification of light-quark intrinsic sea from the comparison between recent data and the intrinsic sea model by Brodsky et al. Good agreement between the theory and data allows a separation of the intrinsic from the extrinsic sea components. The magnitudes of the up, down, and strange intrinsic seas have been extracted. We then discuss the flavor structure and the Bjorken-x dependence of the connected sea (CS) and disconnected sea (DS). We show that recent data together with input from lattice QCD allow a separation of the CS from the DS components of the light quark sea.

Abstract:The propagation of chaos is a central concept of kinetic theory that serves to relate the equations of Boltzmann and Vlasov to the dynamics of many-particle systems. Propagation of chaos means that molecular chaos, i.e., the stochastic independence of two random particles in a many-particle system, persists in time, as the number of particles tends to infinity. We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for a family of general n-particle Markov processes to propagate chaos. This condition is expressed in terms of the Markov transition functions associated to the n-particle processes, and it amounts to saying that chaos of random initial states propagates if it propagates for pure initial states. Our proof of this result relies on the weak convergence approach to the study of chaos due to Sznitman and Tanaka. We assume that the space in which the particles live is homeomorphic to a complete and separable metric space so that we may invoke Prohorov's theorem in our proof. We also show that, if the particles can be in only finitely many states, then molecular chaos implies that the specific entropies in the n-particle distributions converge to the entropy of the limiting single-particle distribution.

Abstract:We show that the chiral $SU(n)\otimes SU(n)$ flavor symmetry on the null-plane severely restricts the sea quarks in the baryon octet. It predicts large asymmetry for the light sea quarks $(u,d,s)$, and universality and abundance for the heavy sea quarks. Further it is shown that existence of the heavy sea quarks constrained by the same symmetry reduces the theoretical value of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule substantially.

Abstract:We compute the kaon's valence-quark (twist-two parton) distribution amplitude (PDA) by projecting its Poincaré-covariant Bethe–Salpeter wave-function onto the light-front. At a scale ζ=2GeV, the PDA is a broad, concave and asymmetric function, whose peak is shifted 12–16% away from its position in QCD's conformal limit. These features are a clear expression of SU(3)-flavour-symmetry breaking. They show that the heavier quark in the kaon carries more of the bound-state's momentum than the lighter quark and also that emergent phenomena in QCD modulate the magnitude of flavour-symmetry breaking: it is markedly smaller than one might expect based on the difference between light-quark current masses. Our results add to a body of evidence which indicates that at any energy scale accessible with existing or foreseeable facilities, a reliable guide to the interpretation of experiment requires the use of such nonperturbatively broadened PDAs in leading-order, leading-twist formulae for hard exclusive processes instead of the asymptotic PDA associated with QCD's conformal limit. We illustrate this via the ratio of kaon and pion electromagnetic form factors: using our nonperturbative PDAs in the appropriate formulae, FK/Fπ=1.23 at spacelike-Q2=17GeV2, which compares satisfactorily with the value of 0.92(5) inferred in e+e− annihilation at s=17GeV2.

Abstract:In this study, we performed calculations and analyses of the structure functions of polarized nucleons and light nuclei, specifically $^3$He and $^3$H, using second-order Feynman diagrams. Our investigation focused on two main aspects: Firstly, we examined the symmetry properties of polarized light sea quarks. Secondly, we conducted a detailed investigation into the impacts of symmetry breaking on the structure functions of both nucleons and nuclei. To achieve this, we utilized the existing polarized Parton Distribution Functions (polarized PDFs) available in the literature. These PDFs were used to calculate and compare the polarized structure functions $g_1$ and $g_2$ of the nuclei. Additionally, we examined and analyzed the Bjorken and Efremov-Leader-Teryaev sum rules by utilizing the moments of the polarized structure functions. The Lorentz color force components, namely $F_E^{y,n}$ and $F_B^{y,n}$, are determined using the twist-2, twist-3, and twist-4 matrix elements. When symmetry breaking is applied, it is observed that they have similar magnitudes but opposite signs. Our theoretical predictions for the polarized structure functions of nucleons and light nuclei, taking into account the symmetry breaking of light sea quarks, exhibit better agreement with experimental data.

Abstract:The axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity is used to derive mass formulas for neutral pseudoscalar mesons. Flavor symmetry breaking entails nonideal flavor content for these states. Adding that the eta(') is not a Goldstone mode, exact chiral-limit relations are developed from the identity. They connect the dressed-quark propagator to the topological susceptibility. It is confirmed that in the chiral limit the eta(') mass is proportional to the matrix element which connects this state to the vacuum via the topological susceptibility. The implications of the mass formulas are illustrated using an elementary dynamical model, which includes an Ansatz for that part of the Bethe-Salpeter kernel related to the non-Abelian anomaly. In addition to the current-quark masses, the model involves two parameters, one of which is a mass-scale. It is employed in an analysis of pseudoscalar- and vector-meson bound-states. While the effects of SU(N-f = 2) and SU(N-f = 3) flavor symmetry breaking are emphasized, the five-flavor spectra are described. Despite its simplicity, the model is elucidative and phenomenologically efficacious; e.g., it predicts eta-eta(') mixing angles of similar to -15(degrees) and pi(0)-eta angles of similar to 1(degrees).

Abstract:We present the first direct lattice calculation of the isovector sea-quark distributions in the nucleon within the framework of the large-momentum effective field theory proposed recently. We use N-f = 2 + 1 + 1 highly improved staggered quarks lattice gauge ensembles (generated by the MILC Collaboration) and clover valence fermions with pion mass 310 MeV. We establish the convergence of the result as the nucleon momentum increases within the uncertainty of the calculation. Although the lattice systematics are not yet fully under control, we obtain some qualitative features of the flavor structure of the nucleon sea: (d) over bar (x) > (u) over bar (x) leading to the violation of the Gottfried sum rule, Delta(u) over bar (x) > Delta(d) over bar (x) as indicated by the STAR data at large and small leptonic pseudorapidity.

Abstract:The flavor and helicity distributions of the Lambda and hyperons for both valence and sea quarks are calculated in a perturbative QCD (pQCD) based model. We relate these quark distributions to the fragmentation functions of Lambda and , and calculate the z-dependence of the longitudinal spin transfer to Lambda and in lepton deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). It is shown that the spin transfer to the Lambda is compatible with the first HERMES results at DESY, and further tests are suggested. We also make predictions for the z-dependence of the Lambda and longitudinal polarizations in neutrino (antineutrino) DIS processes. We investigate the sea contribution to the fragmentation functions, and we testa possible scenario where the sea quarks in Lambda (or the sea antiquarks in ) are negatively polarized, whereas the sea antiquarks in the Lambda (or the sea quarks in ) are positively polarized. The asymmetry of the polarized fragmentation functions of the sea quarks and antiquarks to Lambda and provides a way to understand the different behavior between the Lambda and spin transfers observed in the recent E665 experiment at FNAL.

Abstract:Based on a contact lagrangian that incorporates the SU(3) flavor and SU(2) spin symmetries, we discuss the symmetry properties of the interactions among the heavy flavor meson-baryon $P_{\psi}^N$, $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda$ (with quark components [$n\bar{c}$][$nnc$], [$s\bar{c}$][$nnc$], or [$n\bar{c}$][$nsc$]) systems and di-baryon $H_{\Omega_{ccc}}^N$, $H^{\Lambda}_{\Omega_{ccc}s}$ (with quark components [$nnc$][$ncc$], [$nnc$][$scc$] or [$nsc$][$ncc$]) systems ($n=u$, $d$). The light quark components of the $P_{\psi}^N$ ($P_{\psi s}^\Lambda$) and $H_{\Omega_{ccc}}^N$ ($H_{\Omega_{ccc}s}^\Lambda$) systems have identical flavors, the interactions generated from the exchanges of light mesons in the $P_{\psi}^N$ ($P^\Lambda_{\psi s}$) systems should be very similar to that of the $H_{\Omega_{ccc}}^N$ ($H^{\Lambda}_{\Omega_{ccc}s}$) systems. We perform the single-channel and multi-channel calculations on the $P_{\psi}^N/P^\Lambda_{\psi s}/H_{\Omega_{ccc}}^N/H^{\Lambda}_{\Omega_{ccc}s}$ systems and introduce the SU(3) breaking effect to identify the different mass spectra among the $P_{\psi}^N$ ($H_{\Omega_{ccc}}^N$) and $P^\Lambda_{\psi s}$ ($H^{\Lambda}_{\Omega_{ccc}s}$) systems. We suggest two kinds of evidences for the existence of the flavor-spin symmetry among the heavy flavor $P_{\psi}^N/H_{\Omega_{ccc}}^N/P^\Lambda_{\psi s}/H^{\Lambda}_{\Omega_{ccc}s}$ molecule community, i.e., the mass arrangements of the $P_{\psi}^N/H_{\Omega_{ccc}}^N/P^\Lambda_{\psi s}/H^{\Lambda}_{\Omega_{ccc}s}$ mass spectra and the binding energies of the heavy flavor meson-baryon (di-baryon) systems attributed to the same contact potentials.

Abstract:We study the possible flavour asymmetry, u ≠ d, of the light quark sea distributions of the proton. We discuss the information that is at present available from data on deep-inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering and from Drell-Yan production on various nuclear targets. We show that the ratio of dilepton yields on hydrogen and deuterium targets is very sensitive to u − d.

Abstract:We construct an extension of the Standard Model with a scalar leptoquark $\phi \sim (3,1,-\tfrac13)$ and the discrete flavour symmetry $G_f=D_{17}\times Z_{17}$ to explain anomalies observed in charged-current semi-leptonic $B$ meson decays and in the muon anomalous magnetic moment, together with the charged fermion masses and quark mixing. The symmetry $Z_{17}^{\rm diag}$, contained in $G_f$, remains preserved by the leptoquark couplings, at leading order, and efficiently suppresses couplings of the leptoquark to the first generation of quarks and/or electrons, thus avoiding many stringent experimental bounds. The strongest constraints on the parameter space are imposed by the radiative charged lepton flavour violating decays $\tau\to\mu\gamma$ and $\mu\to e\gamma$. A detailed analytical and numerical study demonstrates the feasibility to simultaneously explain the data on the lepton flavour universality ratios $R(D)$ and $R(D^\star)$ and the muon anomalous magnetic moment, while passing the experimental bounds from all other considered flavour observables.

Abstract:We identify a geometric symmetry on the two-flavor Bloch sphere for collective flavor oscillations of a homogeneous dense neutrino gas. Based on this symmetry, analytical solutions to the periodic bipolar flavor evolution are derived. Using numerical calculations, we show that for configurations without this symmetry, the flavor evolution displays deviations from the bipolar flavor motion or even exhibits aperiodic patterns. We also discuss the implication of our finding for more general three-flavor and inhomogeneous cases.

Abstract:We calculate the nonzero Boer-Mulders functions of sea quarks inside the proton in a meson-baryon fluctuation model. The results show that the transverse spin effects of sea quarks in an unpolarized nucleon are sizable. Using the obtained antiquark Boer-Mulders functions, we estimate the cos2 phi asymmetries in the unpolarized pp and pD Drell-Yan processes at FNAL E866/NuSea experiments. The prediction for the cos2 phi asymmetries in the unpolarized pp Drell-Yan process at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is also given.
