Abstract:Neutron beams are unique tools to probe samples in many fields, such as biology medicine and fusion research. Access to such sources is traditionally limited to large particle accelerators. However, laserdriven pulsed neutron sources have attracted attention in recent years due to their compactness and cost savings. Although, in practical applications, the major obstacle is terribly low neutron flux due to the isotropic scattering. Here we propose a roadmap for laser-driven neutron sources based on "kinematic focusing," which is ideal for producing highly collimated neutron beams and leads to the neutron-flux enhancement by more than 1 order of magnitude. Such a good collimation is conducive to the detection of samples located several meters from neutron sources, and it becomes feasible to place sensitive detectors adjacent to the neutron sources without the necessity of heavy shielding. A theoretical model for kinematic focusing and supporting two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are presented. It is shown that a wellcollimated neutron beam, with the maximal divergence angle of about 30 degrees, is generated by bombardment of a hydrogen target with Li3+ beams, which come from a metallic lithium foil irradiated by a short laser pulse at an intensity of 5.5 x 1020 W cm-2. This proposed method can be achieved by present-day petawatt laser facilities.
A continuous cold rubidium atomic beam with enhanced flux and tunable velocity

Abstract:We present a cold atomic beam source based on a two-dimensional (2D)+ magneto-optical trap (MOT), capable of generating a continuous cold beam of 87Rb atoms with a flux up to 4.3*10^9 atoms/s, a mean velocity of 10.96(2.20) m/s, and a transverse temperature of 16.90(1.56) uK. Investigating the influence of high cooling laser intensity, we observe a significant population loss of atoms to hyperfine-level dark states. To account for this, we employ a multiple hyperfine level model to calculate the cooling efficiency associated with the population in dark states, subsequently modifying the scattering force. Simulations of beam flux at different cooling and repumping laser intensities using the modified scattering force are in agreement with experimental results. Optimizing repumping and cooling intensities enhances the flux by 50%. The influence of phase modulation on both the pushing and cooling lasers is experimentally studied, revealing that the mean velocity of cold atoms can be tuned from 9.5 m/s to 14.6 m/s with a phase-modulated pushing laser. The versatility of this continuous beam source, featuring high flux, controlled velocity, and narrow transverse temperature, renders it valuable for applications in atom interferometers and clocks, ultimately enhancing bandwidth, sensitivity, and signal contrast in these devices.

Direct magneto-optical compression of an effusive atomic beam for high-resolution focused ion beam application

Abstract:An atomic rubidium beam formed in a 70 mm long two-dimensional magneto-optical trap (2D MOT), directly loaded from a collimated Knudsen source, is analyzed using laser-induced fluorescence. The longitudinal velocity distribution, the transverse temperature and the flux of the atomic beam are reported. The equivalent transverse reduced brightness of an ion beam with similar properties as the atomic beam is calculated because the beam is developed to be photoionized and applied in a focused ion beam. In a single two-dimensional magneto-optical trapping step an equivalent transverse reduced brightness of $(1.0\substack{+0.8-0.4})$ $\times 10^6$ A/(m$^2$ sr eV) was achieved with a beam flux equivalent to $(0.6\substack{+0.3-0.2})$ nA. The temperature of the beam is further reduced with an optical molasses after the 2D MOT. This increased the equivalent brightness to $(6\substack{+5-2})$$\times 10^6$ A/(m$^2$ sr eV). For currents below 10 pA, for which disorder-induced heating can be suppressed, this number is also a good estimate of the ion beam brightness that can be expected. Such an ion beam brightness would be a six times improvement over the liquid metal ion source and could improve the resolution in focused ion beam nanofabrication.

An Atomic Beam of Titanium for Ultracold Atom Experiments

Abstract:We generate an atomic beam of titanium (Ti) using a "Ti-ball" Ti-sublimation pump, which is a common getter pump used in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) systems. We show that the sublimated atomic beam can be optically pumped into the metastable $3d^{3}(^4F){4}s$ $a^5F_5$ state, which is the lower energy level in a nearly cycling optical transition that can be used for laser cooling. We measure the atomic density and transverse and longitudinal velocity distributions of the beam through laser fluorescence spectroscopy. We find a metastable atomic flux density of $4.3(2)\times10^9\,$s$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$ with mean forward velocity $773(8)\,$m/s at $2.55\,$cm directly downstream of the center of the Ti-ball. Owing to the details of optical pumping, the beam is highly collimated along the transverse axis parallel to the optical pumping beam and the flux density falls off as $1/r$. We discuss how this source can be used to load atoms into a magneto-optical trap.

Continuous beam of laser-cooled Yb atoms

Abstract:We demonstrate launching of laser-cooled Yb atoms in a continuous atomic beam. The continuous cold beam has significant advantages over the more-common pulsed fountain, which was also demonstrated by us recently. The cold beam is formed in the following steps---(i) Atoms from a thermal beam are first Zeeman slowed to a small final velocity, (ii) the slowed atoms are captured in a two-dimensional magneto-optic trap (2D-MOT), and (iii) atoms are launched {\em continuously} in the vertical direction using two sets of moving-molasses beams, inclined at $\pm 15^\circ$ to the vertical. The cooling transition used is the strongly-allowed ${^1S}_0 \rightarrow {^1P}_1$ transition at 399 nm. We capture about $7 \times 10^6$ atoms in the 2D-MOT, and then launch them with a vertical velocity of 13 m/s at a longitudinal temperature of 125(6) mK.

Abstract:We demonstrate an experimental setup for the production of a beam source of cold 87Rb atoms. The atoms are extracted from a trapped cold atomic cloud in an unbalanced three-dimensional magneto—optical trap. Via a radiation pressure difference generated by a specially designed leak tunnel along one trapping laser beam, the atoms are pushed out continuously with low velocities and a high flux. The most-probable velocity in the beam is varied from 9 m/s to 19 m/s by varying the detuning of the trapping laser beams in the magneto—optical trap and the flux can be tuned up to 4×109 s−1 by increasing the intensity of the trapping beams. We also present a simple model for describing the dependence of the beam performance on the magneto—optical trap trapping laser intensity and the detuning.

Abstract:We demonstrate a method to produce a very slow atomic beam from a vapour cell magneto-optical trap. Atoms are extracted from the trap using the radiation pressure imbalance caused by a push beam. An additional transfer beam placed near the center of the trap transfers the atomic beam into an off-resonant state. The velocity of the atomic beam has been varied by changing the intensity of the push beam or the position of the transfer beam. The method can be used to generate a continuous, magnetically guided atomic beam in a dark state.

Abstract:A beam source is proposed for the production of an intense cold cesium atomic beam that can be used in cesium beam atomic clocks. The source is based on a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap (2D-MOT), but introduces hollow cooling and pushing lights in the axial direction to create a 2D+-MOT, which separates the cooling and pushing functions while the low-power pushing light pushes atoms out to form a cold atomic beam. This cold cesium atomic beam source reduces the light shift due to leakage light and retains longitudinal cooling to increase the flux of the cold atomic beam compared with that of the conventional 2D+-MOT scheme. The specifics of the design are investigated, the atomic velocity and beam flux are calculated, and the results are experimentally verified. The results demonstrate that when the power of the pushing light is 180 µW and when its frequency resonates with the 4 → 5′ transition of the Cs D2 line, the most probable longitudinal velocity of the outgoing cold atomic beam, the width of velocity distribution, and the atomic beam flux are 19.38 m/s, 8.1 m/s, and 1.7 × 1010 atoms/s, respectively.

Abstract:We present an experimental set-up for the production of a beam source of cold Rb-87 atoms, which is formed from a trapped cold atomic cloud in a three-dimensional (3D) magneto-optical trap (MOT). Abstract:We give an overview of the experiments at the Laser Centre of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam on ultracold gases of metastable helium-4 and helium-3 as well as mixtures of both isotopes. We describe our experimental setup and discuss our experiments on Bose-Einstein condensation of 4He* (more than 10 million atoms in a BEC) and sympathetic cooling of 3He* towards Fermi degeneracy (more than 1 million atoms below the Fermi temperature as well as realization of a degenerate boson-fermion mixture). We also present our results on Penning Ionization in ~1 mK clouds containing a single isotope (homonuclear losses) or a mixture of both isotopes (heteronuclear losses).

Abstract:We present a 2D-MOT setup for the production of a continuous collimated beam of cold 87-Rb atoms out of a vapor cell. The underlying physics is purely two-dimensional cooling and trapping, which allows for a high flux of up to 6*10^(10) atoms/s and a small divergence of the resulting beam. We analyze the velocity distribution of the 2D-MOT. The longitudinal velocity distribution of the atomic beam shows a broad feature(FWHM=75m/s), centered around 50m/s. The dependence of the flux on laser intensity, geometry of the trapping volume and on pressure in the vapor cell was investigated in detail. The influence of the geometry of the 2D-MOT on the mean velocity of the cold beam has been studied. We present a simple model for the velocity distribution of the flux based on rate equations describing the general dependencies.
New insights in laser-generated ultra-intense gamma-ray and neutron sources for nuclear applications and science

Abstract:Ultra-intense MeV photon and neutron beams are indispensable tools in many research fields such as nuclear, atomic and material science as well as in medical and biophysical applications. For astrophysical applications aimed for laboratory investigations, neutron fluxes in excess of 10$^{21}$ n/(cm$^2$ s) are required. Such ultra-high fluxes are unattainable with existing conventional reactor- and accelerator-based facilities. Currently discussed concepts for generating high-flux neutron beams are based on ultra-high-power multi-petawatt lasers operating at >10$^{23}$ W/cm$^2$ intensities. Here, we present a novel efficient concept for generating $\gamma$ and neutron beams based on enhanced generation of direct laser accelerated electrons in relativistic laser interactions with a long-scale near critical density plasma at 10$^{19}$ W/cm$^{2}$ intensity. New experimental insights in the laser-driven generation of ultra-intense well-directed multi-MeV beams of photons with >10$^{12}$ ph/sr and a ultra-high intense neutron source with >6$\times$10$^{10}$ neutrons per shot are presented. More than 1.4\% laser-to-gamma conversion efficiency above 10 MeV and 0.05\% laser-to-neutron conversion efficiency were recorded, already at moderate relativistic laser intensities and ps pulse duration. This approach promises a strong boost of the diagnostic potential of existing kJ PW laser systems used for ICF research.

Abstract:We present an all solid-state narrow line-width laser source emitting $670\,\mathrm{mW}$ output power at $671\,\mathrm{nm}$ delivered in a diffraction-limited beam. The \linebreak source is based on a fre-quency-doubled diode-end-linebreak pumped ring laser operating on the ${^4F}_{3/2} \rightarrow {^4I}_{13/2}$ transition in Nd:YVO$_4$. By using periodically-poled po-tassium titanyl phosphate (ppKTP) in an external build-up cavity, doubling efficiencies of up to 86% are obtained. Tunability of the source over $100\,\rm GHz$ is accomplished. We demonstrate the suitability of this robust frequency-stabilized light source for laser cooling of lithium atoms. Finally a simplified design based on intra-cavity doubling is described and first results are presented.

High current well-directed beams of super-ponderomotive electrons for laser driven nuclear physics applications

Abstract:We report on new findings in a laser driven enhanced electron beam generation in the multi MeV energy range at moderate relativistic laser intensities and their applications. In our experiment, an intense sub-picosecond laser pulse propagates through a plasma of a near critical electron density (NCD) and direct laser acceleration (DLA) of electrons takes place. The breakthrough toward high current relativistic electron beams became possible due to application of low density polymer foams of sub-mm thickness. In foams, the NCD-plasma was produced by a mechanism of super-sonic ionization. Compared to NCD-plasmas generated by laser irradiation of conventional foils, the DLA acceleration path in foams was strongly enhanced. Measurements resulted into 11÷13 MeV of the effective electron temperature and up to 100 MeV maximum of the electron energy measured in the laser pulse propagation direction. The growth of the electron energy was accompanied by a strong increase of the number of super-ponderomotive electrons and a well-defined directionality of the electron beam that propagates in a divergence cone with a half angle of 12°. For the energy range above 7.5 MeV that is relevant for gamma-driven nuclear reactions, we estimate a charge carried by these well-directed electron beams as high as 50 nC and a corresponding efficiency of the laser energy conversion into electrons of 6%. The electron spectra generated by the DLA-mechanism in NCD-plasma at 1019 Wcm-2 laser intensity were compared with those measured in shots onto conventional metallic foils at ultra-relativistic laser intensities of 1021 Wcm-2 . In the last case, the twice lower effective electron temperature and the twice lower maximum of the electron energy were registered. The substantial difference in the electron spectra for these two cases presented itself in the isotope production yield.

Laser radiation pressure slowing of a molecular beam

Abstract:There is substantial interest in producing samples of ultracold molecules for possible applications in quantum computation, quantum simulation of condensed matter systems, precision measurements, controlled chemistry, and high precision spectroscopy. A crucial step to obtaining large samples of ultracold, trapped molecules is developing a means to bridge the gap between typical molecular source velocities (~150-600 m/s) and velocities for which trap loading or confinement is possible (~5-20 m/s). Here we show deceleration of a beam of neutral strontium monofluoride (SrF) molecules using radiative force. Under certain conditions, the deceleration results in a substantial flux of molecules with velocities <50 m/s. The observed slowing, from ~140 m/s, corresponds to scattering ~10000 photons. We also observe longitudinal velocity compression under different conditions. Combined with molecular laser cooling techniques, this lays the groundwork to create slow and cold molecular beams suitable for trap loading.

Sub-Doppler Laser Cooling of Fermionic K-40 Atoms

Abstract:We report laser cooling of fermionic K-40 atoms, with temperatures down to (15 +/- 5) microK, for an enriched sample trapped in a MOT and additionaly cooled in optical molasses. This temperature is a factor of 10 below the Doppler-cooling limit and corresponds to an rms velocity within a factor of two of the lowest realizable rms velocity (~3.5v rec) in 3D optical molasses. Realization of such low atom temperatures, up to now only accessible with evaporative cooling techniques, is an important precursor to producing a degenerate Fermi gas of K-40 atoms.

Abstract:We propose an alternative method to laser cooling. Our approach utilizes the extreme brightness of a supersonic atomic beam, and the adiabatic atomic coilgun to slow atoms in the beam or to bring them to rest. We show how internal-state optical pumping and stimulated optical transitions, combined with magnetic forces can be used to cool the translational motion of atoms. This approach does not rely on momentum transfer from photons to atoms, as in laser cooling. We predict that our method can surpass laser cooling in terms of flux of ultra-cold atoms and phase-space density, with lower required laser power and reduced complexity.

Two-colour laser cooling for 40K-87Rb quantum gas mixtures

Abstract:We present an efficient cooling scheme for fermionic $^{40}{\text{K}}$ atoms, using laser light red and blue detuned with respect to the $\mathcal{D}2$ and $\mathcal{D}1$ principle flourescence lines, respectively. The cooling scheme is found to significantly increase the saturation level for loading of a $^{40}{\text{K}}$ magneto-optical trap (MOT), resulting in increased atom numbers or decreased cycle times. While the attainable $^{40}{\text{K}}$ atom number is approximately doubled if exclusively $^{40}{\text{K}}$ atoms are cooled, the scheme is particularly powerful for dual-species MOTs, for example, if $^{40}{\text{K}}$ and $^{87}{\text{Rb}}$ atoms are cooled simultaneously in the same MOT configuration. The typical atom losses due to light-assisted hetero-nuclear collisions between $^{40}{\text{K}}$ and $^{87}{\text{Rb}}$ seem to be reduced giving rise to a threefold improvement of the $^{40}{\text{K}}$ atom number as compared to that in a conventional dual-species MOT, operating merely with $\mathcal{D}2$ light. Our scheme can be a useful extension to most dual-species experiments, aiming to reach simultaneous degeneracy of both species.

Abstract:We demonstrate the largest number of 40 K atoms that has ever been cooled to deeply sub-Doppler temperatures in a single chamber apparatus without using an enriched source of potassium. With gray molasses cooling on the D 1 -line following a standard D 2 -line magneto-optical trap, we obtain 3×10 5 atoms at 10(2) μK. We reach densities high enough to measure the temperature via absorption imaging using the time-of-flight method. We magnetically trap a mixture of m F =-3/2,-5/2 and -7/2 Zeeman states of the F=7/2 hyperfine ground state confining 5×10 4 atoms with a lifetime of 0.6 s or ∼10 3 atoms with a lifetime of 2.8 s - depending on whether the temperature of the potassium dispensers was chosen to maximize the atom number or the lifetime. The background pressure-limited lifetime of 0.6 s is a reasonable starting point for proof-of-principle experiments with atoms and/or molecules in optical tweezers as well as for sympathetic cooling with another species if transport to a secondary chamber is implemented. Our results show that unenriched potassium can be used to optimize experimental setups containing 40 K in the initial stages of their construction, which can effectively extend the lifetime of enriched sources needed for proper experiments. Moreover, demonstration of sub-Doppler cooling and magnetic trapping of a relatively small number of potassium atoms might influence experiments with laser cooled radioactive isotopes of potassium.

Abstract:We report on the design, installation, and test of an experimental facility for the production of ultra-cold atomic isotopes and isomers of cesium. The setup covers a broad span of mass numbers and nuclear isomers, allowing one to directly compare chains of isotopes and isotope/isomer pairs. Cesium nuclei are produced by fission or fusion-evaporation reactions using primary proton beams from a 130 MeV cyclotron impinging upon a suitable target. The species of interest is ejected from the target in ionic form, electrostatically accelerated, mass separated, and routed to a science chamber. Here, ions are neutralized by implantation in a thin foil, and extracted by thermal diffusion. A neutral vapor at room temperature is thus formed and trapped in a magneto-optical trap. Real-time fluorescence imaging and destructive absorption imaging provide information on the number of trapped atoms, their density, and their temperature. Tests with a dedicated beam of 133Cs + ions at 30 KeV energy confirm neutralization, evaporation, and laser cooling to 150 μ K, with an average atomic density of 1010 cm−3. Availability of cold and dense atomic samples of Cs isotopes and isomers opens new avenues for high-precision measurements of isotopic and isomeric shifts thereby gaining deeper insight into the nuclear structure, as well as for sensitive measurements of isotopes’ concentration ratios in trace quantities. The facility also constitutes the core for future experiments of many-body physics with nuclear isomers.
