Abstract:Thin films of CdTe were deposited on glass substrates by thermal evaporation. From the XRD measurements itis found that the films are of zinc-blende-type structure. Transmittance, absorption, extinction, and refractive coefficients are measured. Electronic structure, band parameters and optical spectra of CdTe were calculated from ab initio studies within the LDA and LDA+U approximations. It is shown that LDA underestimates the band gap, energy levels of the Cd-4d states, s-d coupling and band dispersion. However, it calculates the spin-orbit coupling correctly. LDA+U did not increase much the band gap value, but it corrected the s-d coupling by shifting the Cd-4d levels towards the experimentally determined location and by splitting the LDA-derived single s peak into two peaks, which originates from admixture of s and d states. It is shown that the sd coupling plays an important role in absorption and reflectivity constants. The calculated optical spectra fairly agree with experimental data. Independent of wave-vector scissors operator is found to be a good first approximation to shift rigidly the band gap of CdTe underestimated by LDA.

Cosmic Infrared Background Fluctuations and Zodiacal Light

Abstract:We have performed a specific observational test to measure the effect that the zodiacal light can have on measurements of the spatial fluctuations of the near-IR background. Previous estimates of possible fluctuations caused by zodiacal light have often been extrapolated from observations of the thermal emission at longer wavelengths and low angular resolution, or from IRAC observations of high latitude fields where zodiacal light is faint and not strongly varying with time. The new observations analyzed here target the COSMOS field, at low ecliptic latitude where the zodiacal light intensity varies by factors of $\sim2$ over the range of solar elongations at which the field can be observed. We find that the white noise component of the spatial power spectrum of the background is correlated with the modeled zodiacal light intensity. Roughly half of the measured white noise is correlated with the zodiacal light, but a more detailed interpretation of the white noise is hampered by systematic uncertainties that are evident in the zodiacal light model. At large angular scales ($\gtrsim100"$) where excess power above the white noise is observed, we find no correlation of the power with the modeled intensity of the zodiacal light. This test clearly indicates that the large scale power in the infrared background is not being caused by the zodiacal light.

The First Detections of the Extragalactic Background Light at 3000, 5500, and 8000A (II): Measurement of Foreground Zodiacal Light

Abstract:We present a measurement of the absolute surface brightness of the zodiacal light (3900-5100A) toward a fixed extragalactic target at high ecliptic latitude based on moderate resolution (~1.3A per pixel) spectrophotometry obtained with the du Pont 2.5m telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. This measurement and contemporaneous Hubble Space Telescope data from WFPC2 and FOS comprise a coordinated program to measure the mean flux of the diffuse extragalactic background light (EBL). The zodiacal light at optical wavelengths results from scattering by interplanetary dust, so that the zodiacal light flux toward any extragalactic target varies seasonally with the position of the Earth. This measurement of zodiacal light is therefore relevant to the specific observations (date and target field) under discussion. To obtain this result, we have developed a technique that uses the strength of the zodiacal Fraunhofer lines to identify the absolute flux of the zodiacal light in the multiple-component night sky spectrum. Statistical uncertainties in the result are 0.6% (1 sigma). However, the dominant source of uncertainty is systematic errors, which we estimate to be 1.1% (1 sigma). We discuss the contributions included in this estimate explicitly. The systematic errors in this result contribute 25% in quadrature to the final error in our coordinated EBL measurement, which is presented in the first paper of this series.

An improved model for the infrared emission from the zodiacal dust cloud: cometary, asteroidal and interstellar dust

Abstract:We model the infrared emission from zodiacal dust detected by the IRAS and COBE missions, with the aim of estimating the relative contributions of asteroidal, cometary and interstellar dust to the zodiacal cloud. Our most important result is the detection of an isotropic component of foreground radiation due to the interstellar dust. The dust in the inner Solar system is known to have a fan-like distribution. If this is assumed to extend to the orbit of Mars, we find that cometary, asteroidal and interstellar dust account for 70, 22 and 7.5 per cent of the dust in the fan. We find a worse fit if the fan is assumed to extend to the orbit of Jupiter. Our model is broadly consistent with the analysis of interplanetary dust detected by Ulysses and other spacecraft. Our estimate of the mass–density of interstellar dust in the inner Solar system is consistent with estimates from Ulysses at 1.5 au, but is an order of magnitude higher than Ulysses estimates at r > 4 au. Only 1 per cent of the zodiacal dust arriving at the earth would be interstellar, in our model. Our models can be further tested by ground-based kinematical studies of the zodiacal cloud, which need to extend over a period of years to monitor solar cycle variations in interstellar dust, by dynamical simulations, and by in situ measurements from spacecraft.

Abstract:Abstract Measuring the absolute brightness of the zodiacal light (ZL), which is the sunlight scattered by interplanetary dust particles, is important not only for understanding the physical properties of the dust but also for constraining the extragalactic background light (EBL) by subtracting the ZL foreground. We describe the results of high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the night sky in the wavelength range of 300–900 nm with the double spectrograph on the Hale telescope to determine the absolute brightness of the ZL continuum spectra from the Fraunhofer absorption line intensities. The observed fields are part of the fields observed by the Spitzer Space Telescope for the EBL study. Assuming that the spectral shape of the zodiacal light is identical to the solar spectrum in a narrow region around the Fraunhofer lines, we decomposed the observed sky brightness into multiple emission components by amplitude parameter fitting with spectral templates of the airglow, ZL, diffuse Galactic light, integrated starlight, and other isotropic components including EBL. As a result, the ZL component with the Ca ii λλ 393.3, 396.8 nm Fraunhofer lines around 400 nm is clearly separated from the others in all fields with uncertainties around 20%, mainly due to the template errors and the time variability of the airglow. The observed ZL brightness in most of the observed fields is consistent with the modeled ZL brightness calculated by combining the most conventional ZL model at 1250 nm based on the Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment and the observational ZL template spectrum based on the Hubble Space Telescope. However, the ecliptic plane observation is considerably fainter than the ZL model, and this discrepancy is discussed in terms of the optical properties of the interplanetary dust accreted in the ecliptic plane.

A Spitzer IRAC Measure of the Zodiacal Light

Abstract:The dominant non-instrumental background source for space-based infrared observatories is the zo- diacal light. We present Spitzer Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) measurements of the zodiacal light at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 {\mu}m, taken as part of the instrument calibrations. We measure the changing surface brightness levels in approximately weekly IRAC observations near the north ecliptic pole (NEP) over the period of roughly 8.5 years. This long time baseline is crucial for measuring the annual sinusoidal variation in the signal levels due to the tilt of the dust disk with respect to the ecliptic, which is the true signal of the zodiacal light. This is compared to both Cosmic Background Explorer Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (COBE DIRBE) data and a zodiacal light model based thereon. Our data show a few percent discrepancy from the Kelsall et al. (1998) model including a potential warping of the interplanetary dust disk and a previously detected overdensity in the dust cloud directly behind the Earth in its orbit. Accurate knowledge of the zodiacal light is important for both extragalactic and Galactic astronomy including measurements of the cosmic infrared background, absolute measures of extended sources, and comparison to extrasolar interplanetary dust models. IRAC data can be used to further inform and test future zodiacal light models.

The Mid-Infrared Spectrum of the Zodiacal and Exozodiacal Light

Abstract:The zodiacal light is the dominant source of the mid-infrared sky brightness seen from Earth, and exozodiacal light is the dominant emission from planetary and debris systems around other stars. We observed the zodiacal light spectrum with ISOCAM over 5-16 over a wide range of orientations relative to the Sun and the ecliptic. We present theoretical models for a wide range of particle size distributions and compositions. The observed temperature is as expected for large (>10 um radius), low-albedo (< 0.08), rapidly-rotating, grey particles 1 AU from the Sun. In addition to the continuum, we detect a weak excess in the 9-11 um range, with an amplitude of 6% of the continuum. The shape of the feature can be matched by a mixture of silicates: amorphous forsterite/olivine, dirty crystalline olivine, and a hydrous silicate (montmorillonite). The presence of hydrous silicate suggests the parent bodies of those particles were formed in the inner solar nebula. Large particles dominate the size distribution, but at least some small particles (radii ~1 um) are required to produce the silicate emission feature. To compare the properties of zodiacal dust to dust around other main sequence stars, we reanalyzed the exozodiacal light spectrum for Beta Pic. The exozodiacal spectra are dominated by cold dust, with emission peaking in the far-infrared, while the zodiacal spectrum peaks around 20 um. The shape of the silicate feature from Beta Pic is nearly identical to that derived from the ISO spectrum of 51 Oph; both exozodiacal features are very different from that of the zodiacal light. The exozodiacal features are roughly triangular, peaking at 10.3 um while the zodiacal feature is more boxy.

Determining the Shape, Size, and Sources of the Zodiacal Dust Cloud using Polarized Ultraviolet Scattered Sunlight

Abstract:The solar system's Zodiacal Cloud is visible to the unaided eye, yet the origin of its constituent dust particles is not well understood, with a wide range of proposed divisions between sources in the asteroid belt and Jupiter Family comets. The amount of dust contributed by Oort Cloud comets is uncertain. Knowledge of the Zodiacal Cloud's structure and origins would help with NASA's aim of characterizing potentially Earth-like planets around nearby stars, since the exo-Earths must be studied against the light scattered from extrasolar analogs of our cloud. As the only example where the parent bodies can be tracked, our own cloud is critical for learning how planetary system architecture governs the interplanetary dust's distribution. Our cloud has been relatively little-studied in the near-ultraviolet, a wavelength range that is important for identifying potentially-habitable planets since it contains the broad Hartley absorption band of ozone. We show through radiative transfer modeling that our cloud's shape and size at near-UV wavelengths can be measured from Earth orbit by mapping the zodiacal light's flux and linear polarization across the sky. We quantify how well the cloud's geometric and optical properties can be retrieved from a set of simulated disk observations, using a Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis. The results demonstrate that observations with sufficient precision, covering a set of fields distributed along the ecliptic and up to the poles, can be used to determine the division between asteroidal, Jupiter Family, and Oort Cloud dust components, primarily via their differing orbital inclination distributions. We find that the observations must be repeated over a time span of several months in order to disentangle the zodiacal light from the Galactic background using the Milky Way's rotation across the sky.

Abstract:We report on new observations of the motion of zodiacal dust using optical absorption line spectroscopy of zodiacal light. We have measured the change in the profile shape of the scattered solar Mg I 5184 line toward several lines of sight in the ecliptic plane as well as the ecliptic pole. The variation in line centroid and line width as a function of helio-ecliptic longitude show a clear prograde signature and suggest that significant fraction of the dust follows non-circular orbits that are not confined to the ecliptic plane. When combined with dynamical models, the data suggest that the zodiacal dust is largely cometary, rather than asteroidal, in origin.

Zodiacal Light Beyond Earth Orbit Observed with Pioneer 10

Abstract:We reanalyze the Imaging Photopolarimeter data from Pioneer 10 to study the zodiacal light in the B and R bands beyond Earth orbit, applying an improved method to subtract integrated star light (ISL) and diffuse Galactic light (DGL). We found that there exists a significant instrumental offset, making it difficult to examine the absolute sky brightness. Instead, we analyzed the differential brightness, i.e., the difference in sky brightness from the average at high ecliptic latitude, and compared with that expected from the model zodiacal light. At a heliocentric distance of r<2 au, we found a fairly good correlation between the J-band model zodiacal light and the residual sky brightness after subtracting the ISL and DGL. The reflectances of the interplanetary dust derived from the correlation study are marginally consistent with previous works. The zodiacal light is not significantly detectable at r>3 au, as previously reported. However, a clear discrepancy from the model is found at r=2.94 au which indicates the existence of a local dust cloud produced by the collision of asteroids or dust trail from active asteroids (or main-belt comets). Our result confirms that the main component of the zodiacal light (smooth cloud) is consistent with the model even beyond the earth orbit, which justifies the detection of the extragalactic background light after subtracting the zodiacal light based on the model.

Abstract:Based on the catalogue data, it is presented an approach for modeling and simulating the celestial background observed in any time and at any places. All this can be done with the Hipparcos catalogue in the following way. First, with a series of time conversion, the star position data of the catalogue epoch is converted into the position data of the named time. Then, the star visional coordinate is converted into the observation coordinate, and the star visional position is achieved in accordance with the observe at the named time. Finally, the celestial background at various observing time and places can be rendered using the modeling result.

Abstract:We present ZodiPy, a modern and easy-to-use Python package for modeling the zodiacal emission seen by an arbitrary Solar System observer, which can be used for the removal of both thermal emission and scattered sunlight from interplanetary dust in astrophysical data. The code implements the COBE Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) interplanetary dust model and the Planck extension, which allows for zodiacal emission predictions at infrared wavelengths in the 1.25-240 $\mu$m range and at microwave frequencies in the 30-857 GHz range. The predicted zodiacal emission may be extrapolated to frequencies and wavelengths not covered by the built-in models to produce forecasts for future experiments. ZodiPy attempts to enable the development of new interplanetary dust models by providing the community with an easy-to-use interface for testing both current and future models. We demonstrate how the software can be used by creating simulated zodiacal emission timestreams for the DIRBE experiment and show that these agree with corresponding timestreams produced with the DIRBE Zodiacal Light Prediction Software. We also make binned maps of the zodiacal emission as predicted to be observed by DIRBE and compare them with the DIRBE calibrated individual observations (CIO).

Abstract:We present an improved zodiacal light model for COBE-DIRBE derived through global Bayesian analysis within the Cosmoglobe Data Release 2 framework. The parametric form of the ZL model is identical to that introduced by Kelsall et al. (1998), but the specific best-fit parameter values are re-derived using the combination of DIRBE Calibrated Individual Observations, Planck HFI sky maps, and WISE and Gaia compact object catalogs. Furthermore, the ZL parameters are fitted jointly with astrophysical parameters, such as thermal dust and starlight emission, and the new model takes into account excess radiation that appears stationary in solar-centric coordinates as reported in a companion paper. The relative differences between the predicted signals from K98 and our new model are $\lesssim 5\%$ in the 12 and 25 $\mu$m channels over the full sky. The zero-levels of the cleaned DR2 maps are lower than those of the K98 Zodiacal light Subtracted Mission Average maps by $\sim 10$ kJy/sr at 1.25-3.5 $\mu$m, which is larger than the entire predicted contribution from high-redshift galaxies to the Cosmic Infrared Background at the same wavelengths. The total RMS of each DR2 map at wavelengths up to and including 25 $\mu$m are $\sim 30$ $\%$ lower at high Galactic latitudes than the corresponding DIRBE ZSMA maps. Still, obvious ZL residuals can be seen in several of the DR2 maps, and further work is required to mitigate these. Joint analysis with existing and future high-resolution full-sky surveys such as AKARI, IRAS, Planck HFI, and SPHEREx will be essential both to break key degeneracies in the current model and to determine whether the reported solar-centric excess radiation has a ZL or instrumental origin. Thus, while the results presented in this paper do redefine the state-of-the-art for DIRBE modelling, it also only represents the first among many steps toward a future optimal Bayesian ZL model.

Abstract:Context. Arrays of radio antennas have proven to be successful in astroparticle physics with the observation of extensive air showers initiated by high-energy cosmic rays in the Earth's atmosphere. Accurate determination of the energy scale of the primary particles' energies requires an absolute calibration of the radio antennas for which, in recent years, the utilization of the Galactic emission as a reference source has emerged as a potential standard. Aims. To apply the "Galactic Calibration", a proper estimation of the systematic uncertainties on the prediction of the Galactic emission from sky models is necessary, which we aim to determine on a global level as well as for the specific cases of selected radio arrays. We further aim to quantify the influence of the quiet Sun on the Galactic Calibration. Methods. We look at four different sky models that predict the full-sky Galactic emission in the frequency range from 30 to 408 MHz and compare them. We make an inventory of the reference maps on which they rely and use the output of the models to determine their global level of agreement. Next, we take the sky exposures and frequency bands of selected radio arrays into account and repeat the comparison for each of them. Finally, we study the relative influence of the Sun in its quiet state by projecting it onto the sky with brightness data from recent measurements. Results. We find systematic uncertainty of 12% on the predicted power from the Galactic emission, which scales to approximately half of that value as the uncertainty on the determination of the energy of cosmic particles. When looking at the selected radio arrays, the uncertainty on the predicted power varies between 10% and 19%. The influence of the quiet Sun turns out to be insignificant at the lowest frequencies but increases to a relative contribution of ~ 20% around 400 MHz.

Abstract:The zodiacal emission, which is the thermal infrared (IR) emission from the interplanetary dust (IPD) in our Solar System, has been studied for a long time. Nevertheless, accurate modeling of the zodiacal emission has not been successful to reproduce the all-sky spatial distribution of the zodiacal emission, especially in the mid-IR where the zodiacal emission peaks. We therefore aim to improve the IPD cloud model based on Kelsall et al. 1998, using the AKARI 9 and 18 micron all-sky diffuse maps. By adopting a new fitting method based on the total brightness, we have succeeded in reducing the residual levels after subtraction of the zodiacal emission from the AKARI data and thus in improving the modeling of the zodiacal emission. Comparing the AKARI and the COBE data, we confirm that the changes from the previous model to our new model are mostly due to model improvements, but not temporal variations between the AKARI and the COBE epoch, except for the position of the Earth-trailing blob. Our results suggest that the size of the smooth cloud, a dominant component in the model, is by about 10% more compact than previously thought, and that the dust sizes are not large enough to emit blackbody radiation in the mid-IR. Furthermore we significantly detect an isotropically-distributed IPD component, owing to accurate baseline measurement with AKARI.

Abstract:Joint analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background, Baryon Acoustic Oscillation, and supernova data has enabled precision estimation of cosmological parameters. New programs will push to 1% uncertainty in the dark energy equation of state and tightened constraint on curvature, requiring close attention to systematics. Direct 1% measurement of the Hubble constant (H0) would provide a new constraint. It can be obtained without overlapping systematics directly from recessional velocities and geometric distance estimates for galaxies via the mapping of water maser emission that traces the accretion disks of nuclear black holes. We identify redshifts 0.02<z<0.06 as best for small samples, e.g., 10 widely distributed galaxies, each with 3% distance uncertainty. Knowledge of peculiar radial motion is also required. Mapping requires very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) with the finest angular resolution, sensitivity to individual lines of a few mJy-km/s, and baselines that can detect a complex of ~10 mJy lines (peak) in < 1 min. For 2010-2020, large ground apertures (50-100m diameter) augmenting the VLBA are critical, such as EVLA, GBT, Effelsberg, and the Large Millimeter Telescope, for which we propose a 22 GHz receiver and VLBI instrumentation. A space-VLBI aperture may be required, thus motivating US participation in the Japanese VSOP-2 mission (launch c.2013). This will provide 3-4x longer baselines and ~5x improvement in distance uncertainty. There are now 5 good targets at z>0.02, out of ~100 known masers. A single-dish discovery survey of >10,000 nuclei (>2500 hours on the GBT) would build a sample of tens of potential distance anchors. Beyond 2020, a high-frequency SKA could provide larger maser samples, enabling estimation of H0 from individually less accurate distances, and possibly without the need for peculiar motion corrections.

Abstract:For the astronomical community analyzing ISO-SWS data, a first point to assess when judging and qualifying the observational data concerns the flux calibration accuracy. Since the calibration process is not straightforward and since a wrong calibration may lead to an over- or underestimation of the results, knowledge on the full calibration process and on the still remaining calibration problems is crucial when processing the data. One way to detect calibration problems is by comparing observed data with theoretical predictions of a whole sample of calibration sources. By using an iterative process in which improvements on both the calibration and the theoretical modelling are involved, we will demonstrate that a consistent theoretical data-set of infrared spectra has been constructed. This data-set has been used to derive the OLP10 flux calibration of the ISO-SWS. We will shown that the relative flux calibration accuracy of (high-flux) ISO-SWS observations has reached a 2% level of accuracy in band 1 and that the flux calibration accuracy in band 2 has improved significantly with the introduction of the memory-effect corrrection and the use of our synthetic spectra for the flux calibration derivation, reaching a 6% level of accuracy in band 2.

Abstract:We present an extragalactic population model of the cosmic background light to interpret the rich high-quality survey data in the X-ray and IR bands. The model incorporates star formation and supermassive black hole (SMBH) accretion in a co-evolution scenario to fit simultaneously 617 data points of number counts, redshift distributions, and local luminosity functions (LFs) with 19 free parameters. The model has four main components, the total IR LF, the SMBH accretion energy fraction in the IR band, the star formation spectral energy distribution (SED), and the unobscured SMBH SED extinguished with a Hi column density distribution. As a result of the observational uncertainties about the star formation and SMBH SEDs, we present several variants of the model. The best-fit reduced chi(2) reaches as small as 2.7-2.9 of which a significant amount (>0.8) is contributed by cosmic variances or caveats associated with data. Compared to previous models, the unique result of this model is to constrain the SMBH energy fraction in the IR band that is found to increase with the IR luminosity but decrease with redshift up to z similar to 1.5; this result is separately verified using aromatic feature equivalent-width data. The joint modeling of X-ray and mid-IR data allows for improved constraints on the obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN), especially the Compton-thick AGN population. All variants of the model require that Compton-thick AGN fractions decrease with the SMBH luminosity but increase with redshift while the type 1 AGN fraction has the reverse trend.
Measuring the Variance of the Macquart Relation in z-DM Modeling

Abstract:The Macquart relation describes the correlation between the dispersion measure (DM) of fast radio bursts (FRBs) and the redshift $z$ of their host galaxies. The scatter of the Macquart relation is sensitive to the distribution of baryons in the intergalactic medium (IGM) including those ejected from galactic halos through feedback processes. The width of the distribution in DMs from the cosmic web (${\rm DM}_{\rm cosmic}$) is parameterized by a fluctuation parameter $F$, which is related to the cosmic DM variance by $\sigma_{\rm DM}= F z^{-0.5}$. In this work, we present a new measurement of $F$ using 78 FRBs of which 21 have been localized to host galaxies. Our analysis simultaneously fits for the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the DM distribution due to the FRB host galaxy. We find that the fluctuation parameter is degenerate with these parameters, most notably $H_0$, and use a uniform prior on $H_0$ to measure $\log_{10} F > -0.89$ at the $3\sigma$ confidence interval and a new constraint on the Hubble constant $H_0 = 85.3_{-8.1}^{+9.4} \, {\rm km \, s^{-1} \, Mpc^{-1}}$. Using a synthetic sample of 100 localized FRBs, the constraint on the fluctuation parameter is improved by a factor of $\sim 2$. Comparing our $F$ measurement to simulated predictions from cosmological simulation (IllustrisTNG), we find agreement between $0.4 < z < 2$. However, at $z < 0.4$, the simulations underpredict $F$ which we attribute to the rapidly changing extragalactic DM excess distribution at low redshift.
