Abstract:We consider a Wilson-Dirac operator with improved chiral properties. We show that, for arbitrarily rough gauge fields, it satisfies the index theorem if we identify the zero modes with the small real eigenvalues of the fermion operator and use the geometrical definition of topological charge. This is also confirmed in a numerical study of the quenched Schwinger model. These results suggest that integer definitions of the topological charge based on counting real modes of the Wilson operator are equivalent to the geometrical definition. The problem of exceptional configurations and the sign problem in simulations with an odd number of dynamical Wilson fermions are briefly discussed.

Abstract:We performed large-scale simulations in the current-driven three-dimensional frustrated anisotropic XY model in the presense of point-like defects with resistively-shunted junction dynamics. A moving Bragg (BrG) glass is observed applying the current in the equilibrium BrG state. The first-order phase transition from the moving BrG to the moving smectic is clarified. The effect of disorder become weak once the vortex matter is set in motion.

Abstract:A Coherent Potential Approximation is developed for s-wave and d-wave superconductivity in disordered systems. We show that the CPA formalism reproduces the standard pair-breaking formula, the self-consistent Born Approximation and the self-consistent T-matrix approximation in the appropriate limits. We implement the theory and compute T_c for s-wave and d-wave pairing using an attractive nearest neighbor Hubbard model featuring both binary alloy disorder and a uniform distribution of scattering site potentials. We determine the density of states and examine its consequences for low temperature heat capacity. We find that our results are in qualitative agreement with measurements on Zn doped YBCO superconductors.

Abstract:We study the effect of disorder on the propagation of collective excitations in a disordered Bose superfluid. We incorporate local density depletion induced by strong disorder at the meanfield level, and formulate the transport of the excitations in terms of a screened scattering problem. We show that the competition of disorder, screening, and density depletion induces a strongly non-monotonic energy dependence of the disorder parameter. In three dimensions, it results in a rich localization diagram with four different classes of mobility spectra, characterized by either no or up to three mobility edges. Implications on experiments with disordered ultracold atoms are discussed.

Abstract:We study the influence of diagonal disorder (random site energy) of local pair (LP) site energies on the superconducting properties of a system of coexisting local pairs and itinerant electrons described by the (hard-core) boson-fermion model. Our analysis shows that the properties of such a model with s-wave pairing can be very strongly affected by the diagonal disorder in LP subsystem (the randomness of the LP site energies). This is in contrast with the conventional s-wave BCS superconductors, which according to the Anderson's theorem are rather insensitive to the diagonal disorder (i.e. to nonmagnetic impurities). It has been found that the disorder effects depend in a crucial way on the total particle concentration n and the LP level position DELTA_o and depending on the parameters the system can exhibit various types of superconducting behaviour, including the LP-like, intermediate (MIXED)and the 'BCS'-like. In the extended range of {n,DELTA_o} the superconducting ordering is suppressed by the randomness of the LP site energies and the increasing disorder induces a changeover from the MIXEDlike behaviour to the BCS-like one, connected with abrupt reduction of T_c and energy gap to zero. However, there also exist a definite range of {n,DELTA_o} in which the increasing disorder has a quite different effect: namely it can substantially enhance T_c or even lead to the phenomenon which can be called disorder induced superconductivity. Another interesting effect is a possibility of a disorder induced bound pair formation of itinerant electrons, connected with the change-over to the LP-like regime.

Abstract:We investigate the effect of disorder on mixed d- and s-wave pairing in superconductors and properties of optical conductivity by numerically solving Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. From self-consistent calculations it is found that in the coexistence of attractive interactions for both d- and s-wave pairing, the main role of the disorder is to transfer the pairing potential from one component to the other. For weak disorder the d-wave pairing is favorite, but for strong disorder the s-wave component rapidly increases. Compared with the spectrum of optical conductivity (OC) in the case of pure d-wave pairing, by introducing the s-wave component the main peak is suppressed and becomes more asymmetric, and a new peak appears at higher frequencies reflecting the emergence of gap. This gap structure in OC spectrum disappears if strong fluctuations of the s-wave component are taken into account from the self-consistent calculation.

Abstract:We analyse the influence of diagonal disorder (random site energy) on Charge Density Wave (CDW) and Superconductivity (SS) in local pair systems which are described by the model of hard core charged bosons on a lattice. This problem was previously studied within the mean field approximation for the case of half filled band (n = 1). Here we extend that investigation to the case of arbitrary particle concentration (0 < n < 2) and examine the phase diagrams of the model and the behaviour of superfluid density as a function of n and the increasing disorder. Depending on the strength of random on-site energies, the intersite density-density repulsion and the concentration the model can exhibit several various phases, including homogeneous phases: CDW, SS and Bose-glass (NO) as well as the phase separated states: CDW-SS, CDW-NO and particle droplets. The obtained results for SS phase are in qualitative agreement with the available Monte Carlo calculations for two dimensional lattice. Also, in a definite range of parameters the system exhibits the phenomena which we call a disorder induced superconductivity and a disorder induced charge ordering.
Disorder effects on the Topological Superconductor with Hubbard Interactions

Abstract:We study the two-dimensional disordered topological superconductor with Hubbard interactions. When the magnitude of the pairing potential is tuned to special values, this interacting model is exactly solvable even when disorders are imposed on the potential term or coupling constants. The topology of this model is investigated in detail by the real space Chern number formula, which computes the topological index of disordered systems to high precisions. It is found that the disorders can drive the system from topological trivial phase to a non-trivial phase, which generalizes the topological Anderson phenomena to interacting models. The self-consistent Born approximation is also employed to understand the influence of the disorders on the parameters of the interacting topological superconductor. It provide an alternative way to understand the topological transitions at weak disordered region.

Effect of anisotropic impurity scattering in d-wave superconductors

Abstract:In d$_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductors, the effect of s-wave point disorder has been extensively studied in the literature. In this work, we study the anisotropic disorder with a the form of $V_{kk'}^{\rm imp}=V_if_kf_{k'}$ with $f_k=\cos(2\theta)$ (with $\theta$ the azimuthal angle of $k$), as proposed to be caused by apical oxygen vacancies in overdoped La-based cuprate films, under the Born approximation. The disorder self-energy and d-wave pairing affect each other and have to be solved simultaneously self-consistently. We find the self-energy is reduced at low frequencies and thus weakens the pair-breaking effect. This frequency-dependence vanishes in the dirty limit for which the disorder is well described by a scattering rate $\Gamma_k=\Gamma_if_k^2$. One consequence of the disorder effect is the gap-to-$T_c$ ratio $2\Delta(0)/T_c$ is greatly enhanced by the d-wave disorder, much larger than the s-wave disorder and the clean BCS value $4.28$. At last, we generalize the d-wave scattering rate to a general form $\Gamma_\theta=\Gamma_\alpha|\theta-\theta_0|^\alpha$ around each nodal direction $\theta_0$. We find the density of states $\rho(\omega)-\rho(0)\propto|\omega|$ ($\omega^2$) for all $\alpha\ge1$ ($\alpha<1$) in the limit of $\omega\to0$. As a result, the superfluid density $\rho_s$ exhibits two and only two possible scaling behaviors: $\rho_s(0)-\rho_s(T)\propto T$ ($T^2$) for $\alpha\ge1$ ($\alpha<1$) in the low temperature limit.

Modulation of pairing symmetry with bond disorder in unconventional superconductors

Abstract:We study a two-orbital $t$-$J_1$-$J_2$ model, originally developed to describe iron-based superconductors at low energies, in the presence of bond disorder (via next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$-bond dilution). By using the Bogoliubov--de Gennes approach, we self-consistently calculate the local pairing amplitudes and the corresponding density of states, which demonstrate a change of dominant pairing symmetry from $s_\pm$ wave to $d$ wave when increasing disorder strength as long as $J_1\lesssim J_2$. Moreover, the combined pairing interaction and strong bond disorder lead to the formation of $s_\pm$ wave "islands" with length scale of the superconducting coherence length embedded in a $d$ wave "sea." This picture is further complemented by the disorder-averaged pair-pair correlation functions, distinct from the case with potential disorder, where the "sea" is insulating. Due to this inevitable formation of spatial inhomogeneity, the superconducting $T_c$ determined by the superfluid density $\rho_s(T)$ obviously deviates from the value predicted by the conventional Abrikosov-Gorkov theory, where the pairing amplitudes are viewed as uniformly suppressed as the disorder increases.

Abstract:The effect of disorder on pairing properties in the mixed d(x)(-y)(2)(2)+is- and d(x)(-y)(2)(2)+id(xy)-wave pairing states in electron-doped high-T-c cuprates is investigated by self-consistently solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. It is found that the dominant d(x)(-y)(2)(2)-wave component will give way to the s-wave component, while the d(xy)-wave component will have the same magnitude as the d(x)(-y)(2)(2)-wave component with the increase of disorder strength. In real space, the d(xy)-wave component competes locally with the d(x)(-y)(2)(2)-wave component, while the s-wave component does not seem to show such competition with the latter. Both transitions from the d(x)(-y)(2)(2)-wave pairing to the mixed d(x)(-y)(2)(2)+is-wave pairing and to the mixed d(x)(-y)(2)(2)+id(xy)-wave pairing can result in the absence of zero-bias peaks in the local tunneling spectra, but it has a U-shaped form for the former and a V-shaped form for the latter. These results may serve to probe the pairing symmetry in the electron-doped cuprates.
Competition between Superconductivity and Charge Density Waves: the Role of Disorder

Abstract:More recently STM experimets present firm evidence of some kind of charge modulation in underdoped cuprates. The peculiar observations of the above experiments are located in the so called pseudo-gap region of the phase diagram, just over the superconducting-dome. The model that will be used captures in a simple way the idea that the pseudo-gap phase is formed of bound fermion pairs which are close to a CDW instability but generally do not have long range order due to quenched disorder. Thus the charge degrees of freedom will be modeled by an Ising order parameter in the presence of quenched disorder, so representing a charge glassy phase. This glassy phase will be in competition with a superconducting phase modeled by a complex order parameter. As a first step we will study the model in one dimension without disorder to familiarize with it and also to search for a possible explanation of the Giant Proximity Effect (GPE). After that we will investigate numerically the ground state properties of the 2-dimensional lattice model, focusing our attention especially on the stiffness and magnetization of the system in the xy plane. We will show that disorder can induce superconductivity in a CDW phase. This picture is really interesting because it could show how an insulating system can produce a superconducting phase thank to the interplay with impurites.

Abstract:We demonstrate that discrepancies between predicted low-energy quasiparticle properties in disordered 2D d-wave superconductors occur because of the unanticipated importance of disorder model details and normal-state particle-hole symmetry. This conclusion follows from numerically exact evaluations of the quasiparticle density-of-states predicted by the Bogoliubov-deGennes (BdG) mean field equations for both binary alloy and random site energy disorder models. For the realistic case, which is best described by a binary alloy model without particle-hole symmetry, we predict density-of-states suppression below an energy scale which appears to be correlated with the corresponding single-impurity resonance.

Abstract:Based on Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, we investigate the superconducting pairing due to the nearest-neighboring attractive interaction in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). It is found that the superconducting is still of the singlet nature and dominated by the d-wave symmetry in the presence of SOC and in the absence of disorder. The pairing strength has decreasing maxima as the SOC strength increases due to its destructive effect on the superconductivity and shows a periodiclike oscillation reflecting the relationship between the characteristic length of SOC and the coherent length of superconductivity. In the presence of SOC and disorder, the pairing has both the singlet and triplet components, and the s- and p-wave symmetries are induced in addition to the dominant d-wave symmetry. The related strengths of different pairing components exhibit complicated dependence on the strengths of the SOC and the disorder.

Abstract:The properties of a two-dimensional low density (n<<1) electron system with strong onsite Hubbard attraction U>W (W is the bandwidth) in the presence of a strong random potential V uniformly distributed in the range from -V to +V are considered. Electronic hoppings only at neighboring sites on the square lattice are taken into account, thus W=8t. The calculations were carried out for a lattice of 24x24 sites with periodic boundary conditions. In the framework of the Bogoliubov - de Gennes approach we observed an appearance of inhomogeneous state of spatially separated Fermi-Bose mixture of Cooper pairs and unpaired electrons with the formation of bosonic droplets of different size in the unpaired fermionic matrix. We observed an increase in the droplet size (from individual bielectronic pairs to larger droplets and finally to the percolation cluster) when we increase the electron density at fixed values of the Hubbard attraction and random potential.
Disorder-dependent superconducting pairing symmetry in doped graphene

Abstract:Disorder and doping have profound effects on the intrinsic physical mechanisms of superconductivity. In this paper, we employed the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method to investigate the symmetry-allowed superconducting orders on the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice within the Hubbard model, using doped graphene as the carrier, focusing their response to bond disorder. Specifically, we calculated the pairing susceptibility and effective pairing interactions for the $d+id$ wave and extended $s$-wave pairings for different electron densities and disorder strengths. Our calculations show that at high electron densities, increased disorder strength may lead to a transform from $d+id$ wave dominance to extended $s$ wave dominance. However, at lower electron densities, neither of the two superconducting pairings appears under larger disorder strength. Our calculations may contribute to a further understanding of the superconducting behavior in doped materials affected by disorder.

Abstract:We investigate localization behavior of quasiparticles indisordered multi-plane superconductors with s-wave pairing. Byintroducing disorder with random site energies, the spatialfluctuations of Bogoliubov-de Gennes pairing potential areself-consistently determined. The size dependence of rescaledlocalization length for a long bar is calculated by using thetransfer-matrix method. From the finite-size scaling analysis weshow that there exists a critical point of the disorder strengthWc which separates the extended and localized quasiparticlestates in such quasi-two-dimensional systems. The associatedcritical behavior is studied and the relationship of the resultsto the number of planes is discussed.
Unconventional disorder effects in correlated superconductors

Abstract:The understanding of disorder has profoundly influenced the development of condensed matter physics, explaining such fundamental effects as, for example, the transition from ballistic to diffusive propagation, and the presence of quantized steps in the quantum Hall effect. For superconductors, the response to disorder reveals crucial information about the internal gap symmetries of the condensate, and thereby the pairing mechanism itself. The destruction of superconductivity by disorder is traditionally described by Abrikosov-Gor'kov (AG) theory, which however ignores spatial modulations and ceases to be valid when impurities interfere, and interactions become important. Here we study the effects of disorder on unconventional superconductors in the presence of correlations, and explore a completely different disorder paradigm dominated by strong deviations from standard AG theory due to generation of local bound states and cooperative impurity behavior driven by Coulomb interactions. Specifically we explain under which circumstances magnetic disorder acts as a strong poison destroying high-Tc superconductivity at the sub-1% level, and when non-magnetic disorder, counter-intuitively, hardly affects the unconventional superconducting state while concomitantly inducing an inhomogeneous full-volume magnetic phase. Recent experimental studies of Fe-based superconductors have discovered that such unusual disorder behavior seem to be indeed present in those systems.

Evolution of the Density of States Gap in a Disordered Superconductor

Abstract:It has only recently been possible to study the superconducting state in the attractive Hubbard Hamiltonian via a direct observation of the formation of a gap in the density of states N(w). Here we determine the effect of random chemical potentials on N(w) and show that at weak coupling, disorder closes the gap concurrently with the destruction of superconductivity. At larger, but still intermediate coupling, a pseudo-gap in N(w) remains even well beyond the point at which off-diagonal long range order vanishes. This change in the elementary excitations of the insulating phase corresponds to a crossover between Fermi- and Bose-Insulators. These calculations represent the first computation of the density of states in a finite dimensional disordered fermion model via the Quantum Monte Carlo and maximum entropy methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we address ourselves to the nonmagnetic disorder effects onto the quantum critical point, which intervenes the three-dimensional Z(2) quantum spin Hall insulator (topological insulator) and an ordinary insulator. The minimal model describing this type of the quantum critical point is the single copy of the 3+1 Dirac fermion, whose topological mass m induces the phase transition between the topological insulator and an ordinary one. We first derive the phase diagram spanned by the mass term m, chemical potential mu, and strength of the disorder within the self-consistent Born approximation. By way of this, we find a finite density of state appears even at zero energy and at the phase-transition point, i.e., m=mu=0, if the strength of the disorder potential exceeds some critical value. To infer the structure of the low-energy effective theory around these zero-energy states, we further calculated the weak-localization correction to the conductivity. To be more specific, we have found that the diffuson is dominated by the charge diffusion mode and parity diffusion mode. While the charge diffusion mode always carries the diffusion pole, the parity diffusion mode becomes massless only at m=0, but suffers from the infrared cutoff for nonzero m. Corresponding to this feature of the diffuson, the Cooperon is also composed of two quasidegenerate contributions. We found that these two give rise to the same magnitude of the anti-weak-localization (AWL) correction with each other at m=0. As a result, when the topological mass m is fine tuned to be zero (but for generic mu), the AWL correction becomes doubled (quantum correction doubling). Based on this observation, we will discuss the possible microscopic picture of the "levitation and pair-annihilation" phenomena, recently discovered by Onoda [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 076802 (2007)].
