Abstract:We review the physics of CP violation in B decays. After introducing the CKM matrix and how it causes CP violation, we cover three types of CP violation that can occur in B decays: CP violation in mixing, CP violation by mixing-decay interference, and CP violation in decay.

Abstract:This is a quick review of CP non-conservation in $B$ physics. Several methods are described for testing the Kobayashi-Maskawa single phase origin of CP violation in B decays, pointing out some limitations due to hadronic uncertainties. A few characteristic signatures of new physics in B decay asymmetries are listed.

Double-mixing CP violation in $B$ decays

Abstract:We study a long-overlooked CP violation observable, termed double-mixing CP violation, which arises from the interference between two neutral meson oscillating paths involved in a decay chain. The double-mixing CP violation is beneficial for the precise test of the Standard Model CKM mechanism, as it offers the potential to extract weak phases without pollution from strong dynamics. To provide a comprehensive understanding of the double-mixing CP violation, we perform phenomenological analyses on the cascade decays of the $B^0_d$ and $B^0_s$ mesons. Our results show that the double-mixing CP violation can be very significant in certain decay channels, such as $B^0_s \to \rho^0 K \to \rho^0(\pi^-\ell^+\nu_\ell)$. In addition, we employ the decay process $B^0_d \to D^0 K \to (K^-\pi^+)(\pi\ell\nu)$ to demonstrate that the involved strong and weak phases can be directly determined from the experimental data without any theoretical inputs.

Abstract:We discuss several issues related to direct CP violation in rare $B$ meson decays. We review the use of CP asymmetries in extracting information of strong and weak phases, how the experimental data fit into the overall picture, and the current status of the $K \pi$ puzzle. We also examine the flavor symmetry assumption using closely related decay modes and extract the weak phase $\gamma$ from certain $B \to K^* \pi$ and $\rho K$ decays.

Abstract:These lectures provide a basic overview of topics related to the study of CP Violation in B decays. In the first lecture, I review the basics of discrete symmetries in field theories, the quantum mechanics of neutral but flavor-non-trivial mesons, and the classification of three types of CP violation. The actual second lecture which I gave will be separately published as it is my Dirac award lecture and is focussed on the separate topic of strong CP Violation. In Lecture 2 here, I cover the Standard Model predictions for neutral B decays, and in particular discuss some channels of interest for CP Violation studies. Lecture 3 reviews the various tools and techniques used to deal with the hadronic physics effects. In Lecture 4, I briefly review the present and planned experiments that can study B decays. I cannot teach all the details of this subject in this short course, so my approach is instead to try to give students a grasp of the relevant concepts and an overview of the available tools. The level of these lectures is introductory. I will provide some references to more detailed treatments and current literature, but this is not a review article so I do not attempt to give complete references to all related literature. By now there are some excellent textbooks that cover this subject in great detail. I refer students to these for more details and for more complete references to the original literature.

Theoretical Highlights of CP Violation in $B$ Decays

Abstract:In this presentation, we discuss recent key topics in theoretical analyses of CP violation in benchmarks decays of the $B$ meson. We provide the most updated values of the mixing phases and discuss the importance of including the penguin contributions in their studies. Exploring intriguing patterns in purely tree decays, interesting new methodologies can be developed and applied. New data related to the CP asymmetries of key modes like $B^0_d \to \pi^0 K_S$ and $B^0_s \to K^+ K^-$ lead to interesting results. The new $R_{K^{(*)}}$ measurement, compatible with the Standard Model, can still allow for electron-muon symmetry violation through new sources of CP violation.

Abstract:Observations in astronomy suggest that our Universe contains an abundance of matter over antimatter, which can only be explained if the combined CP symmetry is violated. Studies of CP violation have driven the flavor physics with the aim of testing the Standard Model of particle physics and searching for physics beyond it. CP violation is discovered in strange, beauty, and charm meson systems; however, no conclusive sign of CP violation in baryon decays has been observed yet. This review summarizes CP violation studies performed by the LHCb experiment in charmless decays and rare decays of beauty baryons and singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays of charm baryons. A brief on prospects for future LHCb measurements is also discussed.
CP Violation in $B \to K\ell^+\ell^-$ Decays: New Opportunities in the High-Precision Era

Abstract:Experimental data on rare $B$-meson decays indicate deviations from Standard Model predictions. In studies of these decays, possible new sources of CP violation are often neglected. We discuss CP violation in the rare $B$-meson decays $B\to K\ell^+\ell^- (\ell = \mu,e)$ and point to two phenomena that arise when new sources of CP violation are included. First, the Wilson coefficients $C_{9\ell}$ and $C_{10\ell}$ become complex, and we show how we can extract their values from measurements of direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetries. Second, new sources of CP violation can generate nontrivial lepton flavour universality violation. Such a violation is usually measured through ratios like $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$, but we show that measuring only these ratios leaves a large parameter space unexplored. These results bring exciting opportunities to reveal New Physics effects in the high-precision era.

Abstract:The CP violating effects in partial - decay - rate asymmetries of the Bd 0 and Bs 0 systems are reestimated with the method of amplitude ratio. We concentrate on those hadronic final states which are CP eigenstates. We find that for testing CP violations, except the well known Bd 0 �� Ks, the best decay is Bd 0 �� D+D-, which needs, for 3�� signature, 2.2 �� 107 bb? pairs.

Abstract:We report on studies of three types of B-meson decay that can contribute to an understanding of fundamental intergenerational quark mixing, charge-conjugation--parity violation, and long-distance quantum chromodynamics. Specifically, we discuss a selection of analyses related to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) parameters Vcb, Vub, alpha, and gamma, and the nonperturbative heavy quark effective theory quantities lambda_1 and lambda_bar. We first describe an examination of the first and second moments of the hadronic-recoil mass and charged-lepton energy spectra in inclusive b -> c l nu decays. We also report on the reconstruction, using similar experimental techniques, of the CKM-suppressed decay B -> rho l nu and the extraction of its branching fraction, Br(B0 -> rho- l+ nu) = (2.57 +- 0.29 +0.33/-0.46 +- 0.41) x 10E-4, as well as the value |Vub| = (3.25 +- 0.14 +0.21/-0.29 +- 0.55) x 10E-3, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to model dependence, respectively. Finally, we present results on rare two-body charmless hadronic B -> K pi, pi pi, and K K decays and comment briefly on their implications to the geometry of the CKM unitarity triangle, including a bound on gamma.

Abstract:The form factors for ${B}_{c}$ transitions are calculated with a relativistic constituent quark model based on the Bethe-Salpeter formalism. The rates for some semileptonic and nonleptonic ${B}_{c}$ weak decays and $\mathrm{CP}$-violating asymmetries for two-body hardonic ${B}_{c}$ decays are estimated as well. The calculated widths are compared with those predicted in other quark models of mesons. For the most promising signatures for the discovery of ${B}_{c}:$ ${B}_{c}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\psi}l\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{(l}^{\ensuremath{'}+}{l}^{\ensuremath{'}\ensuremath{-}})l\ensuremath{\nu}$ and ${B}_{c}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{(l}^{\ensuremath{'}+}{l}^{\ensuremath{'}\ensuremath{-}})\ensuremath{\pi}$ (with ${l}^{\ensuremath{'}}=e$ or $\ensuremath{\mu})$, the combined branching ratios are, respectively, estimated to be $1.06\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ and ${4.8a}_{1}^{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ for ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{{B}_{c}}=0.5$ ps and as large as $2.56\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ and ${1.15a}_{1}^{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ for ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{{B}_{c}}=1.2$ ps. There are large $\mathrm{CP}$-violating effects in some ${B}_{c}$ decay modes, and the rates for some of these (e.g., ${B}_{c}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\psi}{D}^{*},{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{c}D$, and ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{c}{D}^{*}$, etc.) are large too.

Abstract:We investigate the CP violation in the decay process $\bar B_{s} \rightarrow \phi(\rho,\omega) P \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}P$ by considering the interference effects of $\phi\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$, $\rho\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$ and $\omega\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$ within the framework of perturbative QCD method (P refers to $\pi$, K, $\eta$ and $\eta'$ pseudoscalar mesons, respectively). We analyse the mixings of $\phi-\rho^{0}$, $\phi-\omega$ and $\omega-\rho^{0}$ and provide the amplitudes of the quasi-two-body decay processes. The CP violation for $\bar B_{s} \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-} P$ decay process is obvious at the ranges of the three vector mesons interferences. Meanwhile, the localised CP violation can be found for comparing with the experiment results from three-body decay process at the LHC in the near future.

Abstract:The strong CP violation problem has a long history emanating from its discovery 60 years ago in the decay of neutral kaons and subsequent experimental and theoretical studies over several decades. We review herein experimental data that observe indirect CP violation of the order of $\sim10^{-3}$, as well as the discovery of direct CP violation of the order of $\sim10^{-6}$. Despite improved experimental methods over the past half a century, the original CP violation numbers have remained the same. Verification of the CP violation in the decay of charged kaons was also observed. Data reflecting CP violation in the decays of $B$ and $D$ mesons have become very important and are also discussed in this review. The question of CP violation only with the participation of $s\bar{s}$, $c\bar{c}$, and $b\bar{b}$ quarks in the framework of the Standard Model or beyond it and its small magnitude remains open.
