Abstract:A numerical program to calculate the photoproduction of prompt photons is presented. The code includes full next-to-leading order corrections to all subprocesses. The results are compared to recent ZEUS data.

Abstract:We study reduced products $M=\prod_n M_n/\mathrm{Fin}$ of countable structures in a countable language associated with the Fréchet ideal. We prove that such $M$ is $2^{\aleph_0}$-saturated if its theory is stable and not $\aleph_2$-saturated otherwise (regardless of whether the Continuum Hypothesis holds). This implies that $M$ is isomorphic to an ultrapower (associated with an ultrafilter on $\mathbb N$) if its theory is stable, even if the CH fails. We also improve a result of Farah and Shelah and prove that there is a forcing extension in which such reduced product $M$ is isomorphic to an ultrapower if and only if the theory of $M$ is stable. All of these conclusions apply for reduced products associated with $F_\sigma$ ideals or more general layered ideals. We also prove that a reduced product associated with the asymptotic density zero ideal $\mathcal Z_0$, or any other analytic P-ideal that is not $F_\sigma$, is not even $\aleph_1$-saturated if its theory is unstable.

Abstract:From the interpretation of Linear Logic multiplicative disjunction as the $\varepsilon$-product defined by Laurent Schwartz, we construct several models of Differential Linear Logic based on usual mathematical notions of smooth maps. This improves on previous results, by R. Blute, T. Ehrhard and C. Tasson, based on convenient smoothness where only intuitionist models were built. We isolate a completeness condition, called k-quasi-completeness, and an associated notion stable by duality called k-reflexivity, allowing for a $*$-autonomous category of k-reflexive spaces in which the dual of the tensor product is the reflexive version of the $\varepsilon$ product. We adapt Meise's definition of Smooth maps into a first model of Differential Linear Logic, made of k-reflexive spaces. We also build two new models of Linear Logic with conveniently smooth maps, on categories made respectively of Mackey-complete Schwartz spaces and Mackey-complete Nuclear Spaces (with extra reflexivity conditions). Varying slightly the notion of smoothness, one also recovers models of DiLL on the same $*$-autonomous categories. Throughout the article, we work within the setting of Dialogue categories where the tensor product is exactly the $\varepsilon$-product (without reflexivization).

Abstract:This paper has two parts. The first is concerned with a variant of a family of games introduced by Holy and Schlicht, that we call \emph{Welch games}. Player II having a winning strategy in the Welch game of length $\omega$ on $\kappa$ is equivalent to weak compactness. Winning the game of length $2^\kappa$ is equivalent to $\kappa$ being measurable. We show that for games of intermediate length $\gamma$, II winning implies the existence of precipitous ideals with $\gamma$-closed, $\gamma$-dense trees. The second part shows the first is not vacuous. For each $\gamma$ between $\omega$ and $\kappa^+$, it gives a model where II wins the games of length $\gamma$, but not $\gamma^+$. The technique also gives models where for all $\omega_1< \gamma\le\kappa$ there are $\kappa$-complete, normal, $\kappa^+$-distributive ideals having dense sets that are $\gamma$-closed, but not $\gamma^+$-closed.

Strong minimal model theorem and Massey products

Abstract:Kadeishvili's minimal model theorem establishes the existence of an $A_\infty$-structure, unique up to isomorphism, on the cohomology of a dg associative algebra, which captures its homotopy type. In this note we prove the existence of minimal models that are unique up to isotopy, a stronger result obviously known to T. Kadeishvili and certainly to others, yet seemingly overlooked by mankind. We will explore how this stronger result can help in the study of Massey products. First, we show that the attempts to extract a local information from the ternary operation $\mu_3$ of our minimal model leads directly to the rediscovery of the triple Massey product. The motto is: "The triple Massey product is an invariant manifestation of $\mu_3$." We then prove that, under reasonable assumptions, the higher Massey product $\langle x_1,\ldots,x_n\rangle$ equals the set of all values $\mu_n(x_1,\ldots,x_n)$, where $\mu_n$ runs over the $n$-ary products of our minimal models. We believe that this note will help to elucidate the still somewhat enigmatic relationship between minimal models and Massey products.

Abstract:For an intra-regular or a left regular and left duo ordered $\Gamma$-semigroup $M$, we describe the principal filter of $M$ which plays an essential role in the structure of this type of $po$-$\Gamma$-semigroups. We also prove that an ordered $\Gamma$-semigroup $M$ is intra-regular if and only if the ideals of $M$ are semiprime and it is left (right) regular and left (right) duo if and only if the left (right) ideals of $M$ are semiprime.

Abstract:Let $\alpha : \Gamma \curvearrowright A$ be an action of a discrete group $\Gamma$ on a unital C*-algebra $A$ by *-automorphisms and let $A \rtimes_{\alpha,\lambda} \Gamma$ denote the corresponding reduced crossed product C*-algebra. Assuming that $\Gamma$ satisfies the approximation property, we establish a sufficient and (almost always) necessary condition on the action $\alpha$ for the existence of a Galois correspondence between intermediate C*-algebras for the inclusion $A \subseteq A \rtimes_{\alpha,\lambda} \Gamma$ and partial subactions of $\alpha$. This condition, which we refer to as pointwise residual proper outerness, is a natural noncommutative generalization of freeness.

Abstract:If $V = L$, and $\mu$, $\kappa$ and $\lambda$ are three infinite cardinals with $\mu = {\rm cf} (\mu) < \kappa = {\rm cf}(\kappa) \leq \lambda$, then, as shown in \cite{Heaven}, the $\mu$-club filters on $P_\kappa (\lambda)$ and $P_\kappa (\lambda^{< \kappa})$ are isomorphic if and only if ${\rm cf} (\lambda) \not= \mu$. Now in $L$, $\lambda^{< \kappa}$ equals $u (\kappa, \lambda)$ (the least size of a cofinal subset in $(P_\kappa (\lambda), \subseteq)$) equals $\lambda$ if ${\rm cf} (\lambda) \geq \kappa$, and $\lambda^+$ otherwise. We show that, in ZFC, there are many triples $(\mu, \kappa, \lambda)$ for which ($u (\kappa, \lambda) > \lambda$ and) the $\mu$-club filters on $P_\kappa (\lambda)$ and $P_\kappa (u (\kappa, \lambda))$ are isomorphic.

Abstract:In this note, we developed several results concerning abelian von Neumann algebras, their spectrums, and their tensor products with other von Neumann algebras. In particular, we developed a theory connecting elements of the spectrum of $L^\infty(\Omega, \mu)$ with ultrafilters on a Boolean algebra associated with $(\Omega, \mu)$, generalizing the case where $\Omega$ is a discrete space and its spectrum is identified with the space of ultrafilters on $\Omega$. These ultrafilters were also used to define a new kind of tracial ultrapowers. We also developed a theory representing elements of $L^\infty(\Omega, \mu) \bar{\otimes} M$ as functions that are continuous from the spectrum to $M$ equipped with the weak* topology, analogous to the classical direct integral theory, but which can apply to non-separable von Neumann algebras. We then applied this theory to prove several structural results of isomorphisms $L^\infty(\Omega, \mu) \bar{\otimes} M \rightarrow L^\infty(\Omega, \mu) \bar{\otimes} N$ where $M$ and $N$ are $\mathrm{II}_1$ factors and placed several constraints on $M$ and $N$. The ultrafilter representation of the spectrum was then used to perform certain calculations to provide specific examples regarding the spectrum representations of tensor products as well as the structures of isomorphisms $L^\infty(\Omega, \mu) \bar{\otimes} M \rightarrow L^\infty(\Omega, \mu) \bar{\otimes} N$.

Abstract:Geschke, Lubarsky, and Rahn in ``Choice and the Hat Game''~\cite{choice-and-the-hat-game} generalize the classic hat game puzzle to infinitely-many players and ask whether every model of set theory without choice in which the optimal solution can be carried out contains either a nonprincipal ultrafilter on $\mathbb N$ or else a Vitali set. A negative answer is obtained here by constructing a model in which there is an optimal solution to the hat game puzzle but no nonprincipal ultrafilter on $\mathbb N$ and no Vitali set. This is accomplished in a more general setting, establishing that for any Borel bipartite graph $\Gamma$ not embedding some $K_{n,\omega_1}$ and with countable colouring number there is a model of $\mbox{ZF} + \mbox{DC}$ in which $\Gamma$ has a $2$-colouring but there is no ultrafilter as above or Vitali set. The same conclusion applies to the natural generalization of the hat game to an arbitrary finite number of hat colours.

Shelah's Main Gap and the generalized Borel-reducibility

Abstract:We answer one of the main questions in generalized descriptive set theory, the Friedman-Hyttinen-Kulikov conjecture on the Borel reducibility of the Main Gap. We show a correlation between Shelah's Main Gap and generalized Borel reducibility notions of complexity. For any $\kappa$ satisfying $\kappa=\lambda^+=2^\lambda$ and $2^{\mathfrak{c}}\leq\lambda=\lambda^{\omega_1}$, we show that if $T$ is a classifiable theory and $T'$ is a non-classifiable theory, then the isomorphism of models of $T'$ is strictly above the isomorphism of models of $T$ with respect to Borel-reducibility. We also show that the following can be forced: for any countable first-order theory in a countable vocabulary, $T$, the isomorphism of models of $T$ is either analytic co-analytic, or analytically-complete.

Abstract:Generalised indiscernibles highlight a strong link between model theory and structural Ramsey theory. In this paper, we use generalised indiscernibles as tools to prove results in both these areas. More precisely, we first show that a reduct of an ultrahomogenous $\aleph_0$-categorical structure which has higher arity than the original structure cannot be Ramsey. In particular, the only nontrivial Ramsey reduct of the generically ordered random $k$-hypergraph is the linear order. We then turn our attention to model-theoretic dividing lines that are characterised by collapsing generalised indiscernibles, and prove, for these dividing lines, several transfer principles in (full and lexicographic) products of structures. As an application, we construct new algorithmically tame classes of graphs.

Abstract:The study of high energy gamma-ray bursts can be performed by large area air shower arrays operating at very high mountain altitudes. ARGO-YBJ is a detector optimized to observe small size air showers, to be constructed at the Yangbajing Laboratory (Tibet, P.R. China) at an altitude of 4300 m. One of the goals of the experiment is the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts of energies E > 10 GeV. This can be achieved using the "single particle" technique, more profitable in the energy region E < 50 GeV, and the "low multiplicity" technique, suitable to observe GRBs at higher energies. The sensitiviy of ARGO-YBJ allows the detection of GRBs with energy fluences in the range 1--100 GeV as low as F~10^{-6} -- 10^{-5} erg cm^{-2}, depending on the spectral characteristics of the burst.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain the consistency, relative to large cardinals, of the existence of dense ideals on every successor of a regular cardinal simultaneously. Using a consequent transfer principle, we show that in this model there is a $\sigma$-complete, $\aleph_1$-dense ideal on $\aleph_{n+1}$ for every $n < \omega$, answering a question of Foreman. Using this construction we show the consistency of the existence of various irregular ultrafilters on $\omega_n$, the consistency of the Foreman-Laver reflection property for the chromatic number of graphs for all possible pairs of cardinals below $\aleph_\omega$, and the simultaneous consistency of the partition hypotheses $\mathrm{PH}_n(\omega_m)$ for $n < m$.

Abstract:We study correspondences of tracial von Neumann algebras from the model-theoretic point of view. We introduce and study an ultraproduct of correspondences and use this ultraproduct to prove, for a fixed pair of tracial von Neumann algebras M and N, that the class of M-N correspondences forms an elementary class. We prove that the corresponding theory is classifiable, all of its completions are stable, that these completions have quantifier elimination in an appropriate language, and that one of these completions is in fact the model companion. We also show that the class of triples (M, H, N), where M and N are tracial von Neumann algebras and H is an M-N correspondence, form an elementary class. As an application of our framework, we show that a II_1 factor M has property (T) precisely when the set of central vectors form a definable set relative to the theory of M-M correspondences. We then use our approach to give a simpler proof that the class of structures (M, Phi), where M is a sigma-finite von Neumann algebra and Phi is a faithful normal state, forms an elementary class. Finally, we initiate the study of a family of Connes-type ultraproducts on C*-algebras.

Abstract:We define a version of the Ehrenfeucht-Fraïssé game in the setting of metric model theory and continuous first-order logic and show that the second player having a winning strategy in a game of length $n$ exactly corresponds to being elementarily equivalent up to quantifier rank $n$. We then demonstrate the usefulness of the game with some examples. Finally, we discus connections between the game of length $\omega$ and infinitary logic.

Abstract:A divisibility relation on ultrafilters is defined as follows: ${\cal F}\hspace{1mm}\widetilde{\mid}\hspace{1mm}{\cal G}$ if and only if every set in $\cal F$ upward closed for divisibility also belongs to $\cal G$. After describing the first $\omega$ levels of this quasiorder, in this paper we generalize the process of determining the basic divisors of an ultrafilter. First we describe these basic divisors, obtained as (equivalence classes of) powers of prime ultrafilters. Using methods of nonstandard analysis we determine the pattern of an ultrafilter: the collection of its basic divisors as well as the multiplicity of each of them. All such patterns have a certain closure property in an appropriate topology. We isolate the family of sets belonging to every ultrafilter with a given pattern. We show that every pattern with the closure property is realized by an ultrafilter. Finally, we apply patterns to obtain an equivalent condition for an ultrafilter to be self-divisible.

Abstract:Let $\mathbf{A}$ be a finite simple non-abelian Mal'cev algebra (e.g. a group, loop, ring). We investigate the Boolean power $\mathbf{D}$ of $\mathbf{A}$ by the countable atomless Boolean algebra $\mathbf{B}$ filtered at some idempotents $e_1,\dots,e_n$ of $\mathbf{A}$. When $e_1,\dots,e_n$ are all idempotents of $\mathbf{A}$ we establish two concrete representations of $\mathbf{D}$: as the Fraïssé limit of the class of finite direct powers of $\mathbf{A}$, and as congruence classes of the countable free algebra in the variety generated by $\mathbf{A}$. Further, for arbitrary $e_1,\dots,e_n$, we show that $\mathbf{D}$ is $\omega$-categorical and that its automorphism group has the small index property, strong uncountable cofinality and the Bergman property. As necessary background we establish some general properties of congruences and automorphisms of filtered Boolean powers of $\mathbf{A}$ by any Boolean algebra $\mathbf{B}$, including a semidirect decomposition for their automorphism groups.
