Abstract:A summary is given of the current status of measurements of the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$ performed at LEP. These include measurements from inclusive observables as well as from event shape variables. Recent results based on power law corrections are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the microlensing effects of wormholes associated to black hole spacetimes. Specifically, we work on three typical wormholes (WH): Schwarzschild WH, Kerr WH, and RN WH, as well as their blackhole correspondences. We evaluate the deflection angle upon the second order under weak field approximation using Gauss-Bonnet theorem. Then, we study their magnification with numerics.We find that a Kerr WH could lead to multi peaks in the magnification with certain parameters in the prograde case, while a Kerr BH predicts one peak. Therefore, the multi-peak feature of can be used to distinguish the Kerr WH from other compact objects. We also find that the magnification of RN BH will be one peak compared to RN WH, in which the magnification of RN WH is negative in some situations. For other cases, the behavior of magnification from wormholes and their corresponding blackholes is similar. Our result may shed new light on exploring compact objects through the microlensing effect.

Microlensing and event rate of static spherically symmetric wormhole

Abstract:The study focuses on the impact of microlensing in modern cosmology and introduces a new framework for the static spherically symmetrical wormhole in terms of the radial equation of state. Following a standard procedure, the study calculates the lensing equation, magnification, and event rate based on the the radial equation of state. The analysis highlights that the image problem of the light source is complex. Furthermore, the study suggests that larger values for the throat radius of the wormhole and the radial equation of state lead to higher event rates. Additionally, it is proposed that the event rate of a wormhole will be larger compared to that of a black hole, provided their masses and distances from the light source and observer are comparable. This study offers the potential to distinguish between a wormhole and a black hole under similar conditions.

Microlensing effect of a charged spherically symmetric wormhole

Abstract:We systematically investigate the microlensing effect of a charged spherically symmetric wormhole, where the light source is remote from the throat. Remarkably, there will be at most three images by considering the charge part. We study all the situations including three images, two images, and one image, respectively. The numerical result shows that the range of total magnification is from 105 to 10-2 depending on various metrics. In the case of three images, there will be two maximal values of magnification (a peak and a gentle peak) when the contribution via mass is much less than that of charge. However, we cannot distinguish the case that forms three images or only one image as the total magnification is of order 105. Finally, our theoretical investigation could shed new light on exploring the wormhole with the microlensing effect.

Abstract:Uncertainty in the initial-final mass relation (IFMR) has long been a problem in understanding the final stages of massive star evolution. One of the major challenges of constraining the IFMR is the difficulty of measuring the mass of non-luminous remnant objects (i.e. neutron stars and black holes). Gravitational wave detectors have opened the possibility of finding large numbers of compact objects in other galaxies, but all in merging binary systems. Gravitational lensing experiments using astrometry and photometry are capable of finding compact objects, both isolated and in binaries, in the Milky Way. In this work we improve the PopSyCLE microlensing simulation code in order to explore the possibility of constraining the IFMR using the Milky Way microlensing population. We predict that the Roman Space Telescope's microlensing survey will likely be able to distinguish different IFMRs based on the differences at the long end of the Einstein crossing time distribution and the small end of the microlensing parallax distribution, assuming the small ($\pi_E \lesssim 0.02$) microlensing parallaxes characteristic of black hole lenses are able to be measured accurately. We emphasize that future microlensing surveys need to be capable of characterizing events with small microlensing parallaxes in order to place the most meaningful constraints on the IFMR.

Microlensing of gravitational waves by dark matter structures

Abstract:Gravitational lensing of gravitational waves provides a potential new probe of dark matter structures. In this work, we consider the microlensing effect on gravitational wave signals from black hole binaries induced by low-mass dark matter halos that do not retain enough baryonic matter to hold stars. We clarify systematically when this microlensing effect is relevant and study in detail its detectability by future gravitational wave observatories. We consider lensing by cold dark matter halos and by solitonic cores that reside in fuzzy dark matter halos. Our results show that although the effect can be detectable at relatively large impact parameters, the probability of detecting such lensed events is low. In particular, we find that the expected number of events lensed by cold dark matter halos is $O(0.01)$ per year for BBO and the expected number of events lensed by solitonic cores inside fuzzy dark matter halos is $O(0.01)$ per year for ET. In the case that a significant fraction of dark matter consists of $=O(100 M_\odot)$ objects that are relatively compact, $R < O(0.1\,{\rm pc})$, we show that the expected number of lensed events per year ET can be very large, $0(1000)$.

Abstract:Stable massless wormholes are theoretically interesting in their own right as well as for astrophysical applications, especially as galactic halo objects. Therefore, the study of gravitational lensing observables for such objects is of importance, and we do here by applying the parametric post-Newtonian method of Keeton and Petters to massless dyonic charged wormholes of the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton field theory and to the massless Ellis wormhole of the Einstein minimally coupled scalar field theory. The paper exemplifies how the lensing signatures of two different solutions belonging to two different theories could be qualitatively similar from the observational point of view. Quantitative differences appear depending on the parameter values. Surprisingly, there appears an unexpected divergence in the correction to differential time delay, which seems to call for a review of its original derivation.

Abstract:Identifying black holes is essential for comprehending the development of stars and uncovering novel principles of physics. Gravitational microlensing provides an exceptional opportunity to examine an undetectable population of black holes in the Milky Way. In particular, long-lasting events are likely to be associated with massive lenses, including black holes. We present an analysis of the Gaia18ajz microlensing event, reported by the Gaia Science Alerts system, which has exhibited a long timescale and features indicative of the annual microlensing parallax effect. Our objective is to estimate the parameters of the lens based on the best-fitting model. We utilized photometric data obtained from the Gaia satellite and terrestrial observatories to investigate a variety of microlensing models and calculate the most probable mass and distance to the lens, taking into consideration a Galactic model as a prior. Subsequently, weapplied a mass-brightness relation to evaluate the likelihood that the lens is a main sequence star. We also describe the DarkLensCode (DLC), an open-source routine which computes the distribution of probable lens mass, distance and luminosity employing the Galaxy priors on stellar density and velocity for microlensing events with detected microlensing parallax. We modelled Gaia18ajz event and found its two possible models with most likely Einstein timescale of $316^{+36}_{-30}$ days and $299^{+25}_{-22}$ days. Applying Galaxy priors for stellar density and motion, we calculated the most probable lens mass of $4.9^{+5.4}_{-2.3} M_\odot$ located at $1.14^{+0.75}_{-0.57}\,\text{kpc}$ or $11.1^{+10.3}_{-4.7} M_\odot$ located at $1.31^{+0.80}_{-0.60}\,\text{kpc}$. Our analysis of the blended light suggests that the lens is likely a dark remnant of stellar evolution, rather than a main sequence star.

Abstract:Observations of caustic-crossing galaxies at redshift $0.7<z<1$ show a wealth of transient events. Most of them are believed to be microlensing events of highly magnified stars. Earlier work predicted such events should be common near the critical curves (CCs) of galaxy clusters, but some are found relatively far away from these CCs. We consider the possibility that substructure on milliarcsecond scales (few parsecs in the lens plane) is boosting the microlensing signal. We study the combined magnification from the macrolens, millilenses, and microlenses (3M-lensing). After considering realistic populations of millilenses and microlenses, we conclude that the enhanced microlensing rate around millilenses is not sufficient to explain the high fraction of observed events in the far region. Instead we find a that the shape of the luminosity function (LF) of the lensed stars combined with the amount of substructure in the lens plane determines the number of mcirolensing events found near and far from the CC. By measuring $\beta$ (the exponent of the LF), and the number density of microlensing events at each location, one can create a pseudoimage of the underlying distribution of mass on small scales. We identify two regimes: (i) positive imaging regime where $\beta>2$ and the number density of events is greater around substructureand the number density of events is greater around substructures, and (ii) negative imaging regime where $\beta<2$. We study the particular case of seven microlensing events found by HST in the Dragon arc (at z=0.725). We find that a population of supergiant stars with a steep LF with $\beta=2.55$ fits the distribution of these events. We identify a small region of high density of microlensing events, and interpret it as evidence of a possible invisible substructure, for which we derive a mass of $\sim 1.3 \times 10^8\,\Msun$ (within its Einstein radius).

Astrophysical applications of gravitational microlensing

Abstract:Since the first discovery of microlensing events nearly two decades ago, gravitational microlensing has accumulated tens of TBytes of data and developed into a powerful astrophysical technique with diverse applications. The review starts with a theoretical overview of the field and then proceeds to discuss the scientific highlights. (1) Microlensing observations toward the Magellanic Clouds rule out the Milky Way halo being dominated by MAssive Compact Halo Objects (MACHOs). This confirms most dark matter is non-baryonic, consistent with other observations. (2) Microlensing has discovered about 20 extrasolar planets (16 published), including the first two Jupiter-Saturn like systems and the only five "cold Neptunes" yet detected. They probe a different part of the parameter space and will likely provide the most stringent test of core accretion theory of planet formation. (3) Microlensing provides a unique way to measure the mass of isolated stars, including brown dwarfs and normal stars. Half a dozen or so stellar mass black hole candidates have also been proposed. (4) High-resolution, target-of-opportunity spectra of highly-magnified dwarf stars provide intriguing "age" determinations which may either hint at enhanced helium enrichment or unusual bulge formation theories. (5) Microlensing also measured limb-darkening profiles for close to ten giant stars, which challenges stellar atmo-sphere models. (6) Data from surveys also provide strong constraints on the geometry and kinematics of the Milky Way bar (through proper motions); the latter indicates predictions from current models appear to be too anisotropic compared with observations. The future of microlensing is bright given the new capabilities of current surveys and forthcoming new telescope networks from the ground and from space. Some open issues in the field are identified and briefly discussed.
Detectability of microlensed gravitational waves

Abstract:Gravitational lensing describes the bending of the trajectories of light and gravitational waves due to the gravitational potential of a massive object. Strong lensing by galaxies can create multiple images with different overall amplifications, arrival times, and image types. If, furthermore, the gravitational wave encounters a star along its trajectory, microlensing will take place. Previously, it has been shown that the effects of microlenses on strongly-lensed type-I images could be negligible in practice, at least in the low magnification regime. In this work, we study the same effect on type-II strongly-lensed images by computing the microlensing amplification factor. As opposed to being magnified, type-II images are typically demagnified. Moreover, microlensing on top of type-II images induces larger mismatches with un-microlensed waveforms than type-I images. These results are broadly consistent with recent literature and serve to confirm the findings. In addition, we investigate the possibility of detecting and analysing microlensed signals through Bayesian parameter estimation with an isolated point mass lens template, which has been adopted in recent parameter estimation literature. In particular, we simulate gravitational waves microlensed by a microlens embedded in a galaxy potential near moderately magnified type-I and II macroimages, with variable lens masses, source parameters and macromagnifcations. Generally, an isolated point mass model could be used as an effective template to detect a type-II microlensed image but not for type-I images, demonstrating the necessity for more realistic microlensing search templates.

This technique opens a new window to map the distribution of dark-matter substructure down to $ We study the particular case of seven microlensing events found in the Flashlights program in the Dragon arc ($z=0.725$). A population of supergiant stars having a steep LF with $ $ fits the distribution of these events in the far and near regions. We also find that the new microlensing events from JWST observations in this arc imply a surface mass density substructure of $ $, consistent with the expected population of stars from the intracluster medium. We identify a small region of high density of microlensing events, and interpret it as evidence of a possible invisible substructure, for which we derive a mass of $ (within its Einstein radius) in the galaxy cluster.

Statistics of magnification for extremely lensed high redshift stars

Abstract:Microlensing of stars in strongly lensed galaxies can lead to temporary extreme magnification factors ($\mu\!>\!1000$), enabling their detection at high redshifts. Following the discovery of Icarus, several stars at cosmological distances ($z\!>\!1$) have been observed using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This emerging field of gravitational lensing holds promise to study individual high redshift stars. Also offers the opportunity to study the substructure in the lens plane with implications for dark matter models, as more lensed stars are detected and analysed statistically. Due to the computational demands of simulating microlensing at large magnification factors, it is important to develop fast and accurate analytical approximations for the probability of magnification in such extreme scenarios. In this study, we consider different macro-model magnification and microlensing surface mass density scenarios and study how the probability of extreme magnification factors depends on these factors. To achieve this, we create state of the art large simulations of the microlensing effect in these scenarios. Through the analysis of these simulations, we derive analytical scaling relationships that can bypass the need for expensive numerical simulations. Our results are useful to interpret current observations of stars at cosmic distances which are extremely magnified and under the influence of microlenses.

Three-dimensional Microlensing

Abstract:We study three-dimensional microlensing where two lenses are located at different distances along the line of sight. We formulate the lens equation in complex notations and recover several previous results. There are in total either four or six images, with an equal number of images with positive and negative parities. We find that the sum of signed magnifications for six-image configurations is unity. Furthermore, we show that the light curves can be qualitatively different from those for binary lensing in a single plane. In particular, the magnifications between a 'U'-shaped caustic crossing can be close to unity, rather than having a minimum magnification of 3 as in the single-plane binary lensing. There is only a small probability that three-dimensional microlensing events will be seen in microlensing towards the Galactic Centre. It is more likely that they will be first seen in cosmological microlensing.

Abstract:We present analysis of MACHO Alert 95-30, a dramatic gravitational microlensing event towards the Galactic bulge whose peak magnification departs significantly from the standard point-source microlensing model. Alert 95-30 was observed in real-time by the Global Microlensing Alert Network (GMAN), which obtained densely sampled photometric and spectroscopic data throughout the event. We interpret the light-curve ``fine structure'' as indicating transit of the lens across the extended face of the source star. This signifies resolution of a star several kpc distant. We find a lens angular impact parameter theta_{min}/theta_{source} = 0.715 +/- 0.003. This information, along with the radius and distance of the source, provides an additional constraint on the lensing system. Spectroscopic and photometric data indicate the source is an M4 III star of radius 61 +/- 12 Rsun, located on the far side of the bulge at 9 kpc. We derive a lens angular velocity, relative to the source, of 21.5 +/- 4.9 km/s/kpc, where the error is dominated by uncertainty in the source radius. Likelihood analysis yields a median lens mass of 0.67{+2.53}{-0.46} Msun, located with 80% probability in the Galactic bulge at a distance of 6.93{+1.56}{-2.25} kpc. If the lens is a main-sequence star, we can include constraints on the lens luminosity. This modifies our estimates to M_lens = 0.53{+0.52}{-0.35} Msun and D_lens = 6.57{+0.99}{-2.25} kpc. Spectra taken during the event show that the absorption line equivalent widths of H alpha and the TiO bands near 6700 A vary, as predicted for microlensing of an extended source. This is most likely due to center-to-limb variation in the stellar spectral lines. These data demonstrate the feasibility of using microlensing limb crossings as a tool to probe stellar atmospheres directly.

Eclipsing negative-parity image of gravitational microlensing by a giant-lens star

Abstract:Gravitational Microlensing has been used as a powerful tool for astrophysical studies and exoplanet detections. In the gravitational microlensing, we have two images with negative and positive parities. The negative-parity image is a fainter image and is produced at a closer angular separation with respect to the lens star. In the case of a red-giant lens star and large impact parameter of lensing, this image can be eclipsed by the lens star. The result would be dimming the flux receiving from the combination of the source and the lens stars and the light curve resembles to an eclipsing binary system. In this work, we introduce this phenomenon and propose an observational procedure for detecting this eclipse. The follow-up microlensing telescopes with lucky imaging camera or space-based telescopes can produce high resolution images from the events with reddish sources and confirm the possibility of blending due to the lens star. After conforming a red-giant lens star and source star, we can use the advance photometric methods and detect the relative flux change during the eclipse in the order of $10^{-4}-10^{-3}$. Observation of the eclipse provides the angular size of source star in the unit of Einstein angle and combination of this observation with the parallax observation enable us to calculate the mass of lens star. Finally, we analyzed seven microlensing event and show the feasibility of observation of this effect in future observations.

Exploring the Impact of Microlensing on Gravitational Wave Signals: Biases, Population Characteristics, and Prospects for Detection

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the impact of microlensing on gravitational wave (GW) signals in the LIGO$-$Virgo sensitivity band. Microlensing caused by an isolated point lens, with (redshifted) mass ranging from $M_\mathrm{Lz}\in(1,10^5){\rm M}_\odot$ and impact parameter $y\in (0.01,~5)$, can result in a maximum mismatch of $\sim 30\%$ with their unlensed counterparts. When $y<1$, it strongly anti-correlates with the luminosity distance enhancing the detection horizon and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Biases in inferred source parameters are assessed, with in-plane spin components being the most affected intrinsic parameters. The luminosity distance is often underestimated, while sky-localisation and trigger times are mostly well-recovered. Study of a population of microlensed signals due to an isolated point lens primarily reveals: (i) using unlensed templates during the search causes fractional loss ($20\%$ to $30\%$) of potentially identifiable microlensed signals; (ii) the observed distribution of $y$ challenges the notion of its high improbability at low values ($y\lesssim 1$), especially for $y\lesssim 0.1$; (iii) Bayes factor analysis of the population indicates that certain region in $M_\mathrm{Lz}-y$ parameter space have a higher probability of being detected and accurately identified as microlensed. Notably, the microlens parameters for the most compelling candidate identified in previous microlensing searches, GW200208_130117, fall within a 1-sigma range of the aforementioned higher probability region. Identifying microlensing signatures from $M_\mathrm{Lz}<100~$M$_\odot$ remains challenging due to small microlensing effects at typical SNR values. Additionally, we also examined how microlensing from a population of microlenses influences the detection of strong lensing signatures in pairs of GW events, particularly in the posterior-overlap analysis.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This work studies microlensing effects in strongly lensed gravitational wave (GW) signals corresponding to global minima images in galaxy-scale lenses. We find that stellar microlenses alone are unable to introduce noticeable wave effects in the global minima GW signals at strong lensing magnification $( {\mu})\lt 50$ with match value between unlensed and lensed GW signals being above ${\sim }99.5~{{\ \rm per \, cent}}$ in ${\sim }90~{{\ \rm per \, cent}}$ of systems implying that GW signals corresponding to global minima can be treated as reference signal to determine the amount of microlensing in other strongly lensed counterparts. Since the stellar microlenses introduce negligible wave effects in global minima, they can be used to probe the intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) lenses in the galaxy lens. We show that the presence of an IMBH lens with mass in the range $[50,10^3]~{\rm M_\odot }$ such that the global minima lies within five Einstein radius of it, the microlensing effects at $f\lt 10^2$ Hz are mainly determined by the IMBH lens for ${\mu} \lt 50$. Assuming that a typical strong lensing magnification of 3.8 and high enough signal-to-noise ratio (in the range ${\simeq }[10, 30]$) to detect the microlensing effect in GW signals corresponding to global minima, with non-detection of IMBH-led microlensing effects in ${\simeq }15~({\simeq }150)$ lensed GW signals, we can rule out dark matter fraction $\gt 10~{{\ \rm per \, cent}}~(\gt 1~{{\ \rm per \, cent}})$ made of IMBH population inside galaxy lenses with mass values $\gt 150~{\rm M_\odot }$ with ${\sim }$90 per cent confidence. Although we have specifically used IMBHs as an example, the same analysis applies to any subhalo (or compact objects) with lensing masses (i.e. the total mass inside Einstein radius) satisfying the above criterion.

Abstract:We define a second-order moment of the observational differential microlensing curves that can be used to impose constraints on physical properties of lensed quasars. We show that this quantity is sensitive both to variations in the source size and the deflector mass. We formulize a methodology to recover the source size from the observational measurements when the mass spectrum is fixed. As a case study, we test it with a sample of four quadruple lenses, both in simulated scenarios and with real data from theChandra X-ray Observatory. In our simulations with a uniform stellar population the method works best to detect sources around 0.1 Einstein radii, giving correct upper/lower limits for much smaller/bigger sizes without requiring a big leap in additional computational effort as compared to a single-epoch approach, yet taking advantage of multi-epoch information. We apply the method to a small sample of X-ray data from four objects assuming a range of star masses, and obtain a degeneracy relation between the source size and deflector mass. Combined with previous estimates for the size of the X-ray corona, the degeneracy relation suggests that X-ray microlensing is mainly induced by planetary mass objects.
