Abstract:In this paper, we explore the gravity theory, which introduces a coupling between matter and curvature, through the simplest linear functional form . We derive the modified Einstein field equations and conservation equations for this theory. We then apply this framework to study the structural properties of quark stars (QSs) composed of interacting quark matter, considering perturbative QCD corrections and color superconductivity. By solving the modified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations, we investigate the mass-radius relation, stability criteria, and energy conditions of QSs. Our results indicate that the gravity significantly influences the properties of QSs, leading to deviations from General Relativity. The analysis shows consistency with recent observational data, suggesting that the modified gravity framework could provide viable models for the study of compact stars.

A non-relativistic theory of quantum mechanics and gravity with local modulus symmetry

Abstract:Inspired by the similarities between quantum field theory and general relativity, in that each theory encompasses two universal constants and a local symmetry, we set out to construct a non-relativistic theory of quantum mechanics and gravity based upon two assumptions: quantum system remains invariant to local modulus transformation, and physical laws reduce to those of conventional quantum mechanics in small enough region, i.e. a modified version of the equivalence principle. Imposing local modulus symmetry brings a number of changes, including the replacement of the complex conjugate of the wave function by a new scalar function with the same phase but different modulus, and particle momentum operator built on covariant derivative, with a connection of purely imaginary velocity field that is identified as the gravitational escape velocity. Three quantum metric functions are defined to signify the kinematic change of quantum state brought by gravity. The modified equivalence principle enables us to relate the escape velocity field with the quantum metric functions. Equation of motion and field equation that are covariant to local modulus transformation are constructed. New features in these equations offer potential mechanisms to account for the dark energy, the mass discrepancies in the universe, and the quantum state reduction of macroscopic objects.

Abstract:Cornell potential is known to represent the quark-antiquark confinement interaction. In addition to the Cornell potential, there have been other interactions in the literature that demonstrate confining structure in the quark-antiquark system. Guendelman has proposed a nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) model which results in electric potential in the form of Cornell interaction. In this study, we propose two NED models whose electric potential is in the form of two other confining potentials. We also study the coupling of gravity to one of these models which are in the form of a correction to linear Maxwell's theory. We find spacetime which can be a black hole or a naked singular particle. In the zeroth approximation, we examine the circular speed of a distant test particle orbiting the central black hole. The Newtonian potential due to the spacetime at the location of the distant particle possesses an additional term proportional to the NED parameter. Due to the presence of such a term, the speed-radius curve gets improved from the pure Reissner-Nordstrom. It is a kind of weaker confinement acting on distant parts of a galaxy due to a supermassive central black hole.

Abstract:We derive the low-energy limit of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and provide evidence that in the 't Hooft limit, i.e. for a very large number of colors and increasing 't Hooft coupling, quark confinement is recovered. The low energy limit of the theory turns out to be a non-local Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. The effect of non-locality, arising from a gluon propagator that fits quite well to the profile of an instanton liquid, is to produce a phase transition from a chiral condensate to an instanton liquid, as the coupling increases with lower momentum. This phase transition suffices to move the poles of the quark propagator to the complex plane. As a consequence, free quarks are no longer physical states in the spectrum of the theory.

Quadratic gravity in analogy to quantum chromodynamics: Light fermions in its landscape

Abstract:We investigate a nonperturbative approach to quantum gravity built in terms of analogies between quadratic gravity and quantum chromodynamics. This approach is based on a conjectured phase transition between quadratic gravity in the trans-Planckian regime and an effective field theory, with general relativity as the leading-order term, below the Planck scale. We point out that not all aspects of the analogy between quadratic gravity and quantum chromodynamics are desired. A possible mechanism of chiral symmetry breaking driven by quantum gravity fluctuations could make this setup incompatible with our observed Universe. Here, we put forward a first investigation of chiral symmetry breaking in the context of quadratic gravity. We find indication that gravity, despite being an attractive force, does not trigger chiral symmetry breaking in a nonperturbative regime. This result is based on a (functional) renormalization group analysis of four-fermion interactions coupled to quadratic gravity. We also comment on the particularities associated with the single-flavor case. Abstract:The Mössbauer rotor effect recently gained a renewed interest due to the discovery and explanation of an additional effect of clock synchronization which has been missed for about 50 years, i.e. starting from a famous book of Pauli, till some recent experimental analyses. The theoretical explanation of such an additional effect is due to some recent papers in both the general relativistic and the special relativistic frameworks. In the first case (general relativistic framework) the key point of the approach is the Einstein's equivalence principle (EEP), which, in the words of the same Einstein, enables "the point of view to interpret the rotating system K' as at rest, and the centrifugal field as a gravitational field". In this paper, we analyse both the history of the Mössbauer rotor effect and its interpretation from the point of view of Einstein's general theory of relativity (GTR) by adding some new insight. In particular, it will be shown that, if on one hand the "traditional" effect of redshift has a strong analogy with the gravitational redshift, on the other hand the additional effect of clock synchronization has an intriguing analogy with the cosmological redshift. Finally, we show that a recent claim in the literature that the second effect of clock synchronization does not exist is not correct.

Abstract:In this contribution, we discuss the asymptotic safety scenario for quantum gravity with a functional renormalization group approach that disentangles dynamical metric fluctuations from the background metric. We review the state of the art in pure gravity and general gravity–matter systems. This includes the discussion of results on the existence and properties of the asymptotically safe ultraviolet fixed point, full ultraviolet-infrared trajectories with classical gravity in the infrared, and the curvature dependence of couplings also in gravity–matter systems. The results in gravity–matter systems concern the ultraviolet stability of the fixed point and the dominance of gravity fluctuations in minimally coupled gravity–matter systems. Furthermore, we discuss important physics properties such as locality of the theory, diffeomorphism invariance, background independence, unitarity, and access to observables, as well as open challenges.

Renormalisation of postquantum-classical gravity

Abstract:One of the obstacles to reconciling quantum theory with general relativity, is constructing a theory which is both consistent with observation, and and gives finite answers at high energy, so that the theory holds at arbitrarily short distances. Quantum field theory achieves this through the process of renormalisation, but famously, perturbative quantum gravity fails to be renormalisable, even without coupling to matter. Recently, an alternative to quantum gravity has been proposed, in which the geometry of spacetime is taken to be classical rather than quantum, while still being coupled to quantum matter fields [1, 2]. This can be done consistently, provided the dynamics is fundamentally stochastic. Here, we find that the pure gravity theory is formally renormalisable. We do so via the path integral formulation by relating the classical-quantum action to that of quadratic gravity which is renormalisable. Because the action induces stochastic dynamics of space-time, rather than deterministic evolution of a quantum field, the classical-quantum theory is free of tachyons and negative norm ghosts. The key remaining question is whether the renormalisation prescription retains completely positive (CP) dynamics. This consideration appears to single out the scale invariant and asymptotically free theory. We give further evidence that the theory is CP, by showing that the two-point function of the scalar mode is positive. To support the use of precision accelerometers in testing the quantum nature of spacetime, we also compute the power spectral density of the acceleration. The results presented here have a number of implications for inflation, CMB data, and experiments to test the quantum nature of spacetime. They may also provide a way to compute probabilities in the regime of quantum gravity where spacetime can be treated as effectively classical.

In this essay, it is proven that, in a self-consistent semiclassical theory of gravity, the asymptotically measured orbital periods of test particles around central compact objects are fundamentally bounded from below by the compact universal relation [math] [here [math] are, respectively, the proper mass and the electric charge of the electron, the lightest charged particle]. The explicit dependence of the lower bound on the fundamental constants [math] of gravity, special relativity, and quantum theory suggests that it provides a rare glimpse into the yet unknown quantum theory of gravity.

Abstract:We throw further light on a recently discussed Kerr-Newman type formulation of Fermions and the related cosmological scheme which predicted an ever expanding universe, as indeed has subsequently been confirmed. In the spirit of the correspondence principle, it is shown how the quark picture emerges at the Compton wavelength and the Big Bang scenario at the Planck length. At the same time we obtain a theoretical justification for the peculiar characteristics of the quarks namely their fractional charge, handedness and confinement, as also the order of magnitude of their masses, all of which were hitherto adhoc features.

Abstract:It is shown here that if we assume that what is conserved in nature is not simply mass-energy, but rather mass-energy plus the energy uncertainty of the uncertainty principle, and if we also assume that position uncertainty is reduced by the formation of relativistic horizons, then the resulting increase of energy uncertainty is close to that needed for a new model for inertial mass (MiHsC, quantised inertia) which has been shown to predict galaxy rotation without dark matter and cosmic acceleration without dark energy. The same principle can also be used to model the inverse square law of gravity, and predicts the mass of the electron.

Quasinormal spectrum in the asymptotically safe gravity

Abstract:Asymptotically safe gravity is based on the idea of the dependence of the gravitational coupling upon the distance from the origin, approaching its classical value in the weak field regime. We consider three cases of identifying the cut-off parameter in the asymptotically safe gravity, leading to the three distinctive models for black holes. We find that the deviation of the fundamental mode from the Schwarzschild limit is a few percent, in contrast to the higher overtones, where the deviation reaches hundreds of percent, even when the fundamental mode almost coincides with the Schwarzschild mode. This behavior is connected with the fact that the quantum correction to the black hole spacetime is strong near the event horizon, but quickly falls off with distance and negligible near the peak of the effective potential surrounding the black hole.

Abstract:We discuss two scenarios of emergent gravity. In one of them the quantum vacuum is considered as superplastic crystal, and the effective gravity describes the dynamical elastic deformations of this crystal. In the other one the gravitational tetrads emerge as the bilinear form of the fermionic fields. In spite of the essentially different mechanisms of emergent gravity, these two scenarios have one important common property: the metric field has dimension of the inverse square of length $[g_{\mu\nu}]=1/[l]^2$, as distinct from the conventional dimensionless metric, $[g_{\mu\nu}]=1$, in general relativity. As a result the physical quantities, which obey diffeomorphism invariance, become dimensionless. This takes place for such quantities as Newton constant, the scalar curvature, the cosmological constant, particle masses, fermionic and scalar bosonic fields, etc. This may suggest that the dimensionless physics can be the natural consequence of the diffeomorphism invariance, and thus can be the general property of any gravity, which emerges in the quantum vacuum. One of the nontrivial consequences of the shift of dimensions is related to topology. Due to the shift of dimensions some operators become topological, and contain the integer or fractional prefactors in the action. This in particular concerns the intrinsic 3+1 quantum Hall effect and the Nieh-Yan quantum anomaly in terms of torsion.

Abstract:Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is the fundamental theory of strong interactions. It describes the behavior of quarks and gluons which are the smallest known constituents of nuclear matter. The difficulties in solving the theory at low energies in the strongly interacting, non-perturbative regime have left unanswered many important questions in QCD, such as the nature of confinement or the mechanism of hadronization. In these lectures oriented towards the students we introduce two classes of dualities that attempt to reproduce many of the features of QCD, while making the treatment at strong coupling more tractable: (1) the AdS/CFT correspondence between a specific class of string theories and a conformal field theory and (2) an effective low-energy theory of QCD dual to classical QCD on a curved conformal gravitational background. The hope is that by applying these dualities to the evaluation of various properties of the strongly-interacting matter produced in heavy ion collisions one can understand how QCD behaves at strong coupling. We give an outline of the applications, with emphasis on two transport coefficients of QCD matter -- shear and bulk viscosities.

Abstract:The covariant canonical transformation theory applied to the relativistic Hamiltonian theory of classical matter fields in dynamical space-time yields a novel (first order) gauge field theory of gravitation. The emerging field equations necessarily embrace a quadratic Riemann term added to Einstein's linear equation. The quadratic term endows space-time with inertia generating a dynamic response of the space-time geometry to deformations relative to (Anti) de Sitter geometry. A "deformation parameter" is identified, the inverse dimensionless coupling constant governing the relative strength of the quadratic invariant in the Hamiltonian, and directly observable via the deceleration parameter $q_0$. The quadratic invariant makes the system inconsistent with Einstein's constant cosmological term, $\Lambda = \mathrm{const}$. In the Friedman model this inconsistency is resolved with the scaling ansatz of a "cosmological function", $\Lambda(a)$, where $a$ is the scale parameter of the FLRW metric. %Moreover, the strain generated by the quadratic term turns out to act as a geometrical stress. The cosmological function can be normalized such that with the $\Lambda$ CDM parameter set the present-day observables, the Hubble constant and the deceleration parameter, can be reproduced. %We analyze the asymptotics of the such normalized Friedman equations with respect to both, the fundamental parameters (coupling constants) and the scale $a$. With this parameter set we recover the dark energy scenario in the late epoch. The proof that inflation in the early phase is caused by the "geometrical fluid" representing the inertia of space-time is yet pending, though.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to derive limits on various forms of "new physics" using atomic experimental data. Interactions with dark energy and dark matter fields can lead to space-time variations of fundamental constants, which can be detected through atomic spectroscopy. In this study, we examine the effects of a varying nuclear mass mN and nuclear radius rN on two transition ratios: the comparison of the two-photon transition in atomic hydrogen with the hyperfine transition in Cs133 based clocks, and the ratio of optical clock frequencies in Al+ and Hg+ . The sensitivity of these frequency ratios to changes in mN and rN enables us to derive new limits on the variations of the proton mass, quark mass, and the QCD parameter θ . Additionally, we consider the scalar field generated by the Yukawa-type interaction of feebly interacting hypothetical scalar particles with Standard Model particles in the presence of massive bodies such as the Sun and Moon. Using the data from the Al+/Hg+ , Yb+/Cs , and Yb+(E2)/Yb+(E3) transition frequency ratios, we place constraints on the interaction of the scalar field with photons, nucleons, and electrons for a range of scalar particle masses. Effects of hyperon potentials and symmetry energy in quark deconfinement

Abstract:In this letter we discuss how the results of recent nuclear experiments that correspond to measurements at low densities can affect the equation of state at large densities and temperatures, changing the particle composition and ultimately influencing deconfinement to quark matter. In particular, saturation values of the hyperon potentials affect the hyperon content, while the symmetry energy at saturation directly regulates how the stiffness of the equation of state changes with isospin. We make use of a chiral model that describes nucleons, hyperons, and quarks to show how astrophysical conditions, such as the ones in neutron stars, present the ideal ground to study the effects of these two quantities in dense matter. In this case, for small charge fraction/ large isospin asymmetry, the couplings that reproduce different symmetry energy slopes can significantly modify deconfinement, with quantitative changes in the critical chemical potential depending on the deconfining potential. On the other hand, different values of the parameter that controls the hyperon potentials (kept within a range close to experimental data) do not affect deconfinement significantly.

Abstract:We present an attempt towards constructing relativistic quark-gluon quasi-potentials from QCD using Unitary Clothing Transformations (UCT) approach. The brief review of the UCT method is given. Starting from a simplified model of QCD hamiltonian (H), we define the 'color-clothed' representation (CCR) of H. In this representaion, it is required that only color-singlet states are the eigenstates of the H. In CCR, H contains the family of quantum relativistic potentials acting between 'color clothed' quarks and gluons. Simultaneously, newly defined quarks acquire new masses (expected to be close to constituent masses), and new renormalized couplings. Properties of 'color clothed' quark-gluon potentials are consistent with the concept of 'color confinement' in a natural way.

Abstract:Recent approaches to quark confinement are reviewed, with an emphasis on their connection to renormalization group (RG) methods. Basic concepts related to confinement are introduced: the string tension, Wilson loops and Polyakov lines, string breaking, string tension scaling laws, centre symmetry breaking and the deconfinement transition at non-zero temperature. Current topics discussed include confinement on R 3 × S 1 , the real-space RG, the functional RG and the Schwinger–Dyson equation approach to confinement.
