Abstract:Doping a Mott insulator gives rise to unconventional superconducting correlations. Here we address the interplay between d-wave superconductivity and Mott physics using the two-dimensional Hubbard model with cellular dynamical mean-field theory on a $2\times2$ plaquette. Our approach is to study superconducting correlations from the perspective of a cluster quantum impurity model embedded in a self-consistent bath. At the level of the cluster, we calculate the probabilities of the possible cluster electrons configurations. Upon condensation we find an increased probability that cluster electrons occupy a four-electron singlet configuration, enabling us to identify this type of short-range spin correlations as key to superconducting pairing. The increased probability of this four-electron singlet comes at the expense of a reduced probability of a four-electron triplet with no significant probability redistribution of fluctuations of charges. This allows us to establish that superconductivity at the level of the cluster primarily involves a reorganisation of short-range spin correlations rather than charge correlations. We gain information about the bath by studying the spectral weight of the hybridization function. Upon condensation, we find a transfer of spectral weight leading to the opening of a superconducting gap. We use these insights to interpret the signatures of superconducting correlations in the density of states of the system and in the zero-frequency spin susceptibility.

Abstract:We study the superconducting pairing correlations in the ground state of the doped Hubbard model-in its original form without hopping beyond nearest neighbor or other perturbing parameters-in two dimensions at intermediate to strong coupling and near optimal doping. The nature of such correlations has been a central question ever since the discovery of cuprate high-temperature superconductors. Despite unprecedented effort and tremendous progress in understanding the properties of this fundamental model, a definitive answer to whether the ground state is superconducting in the parameter regime most relevant to cuprates has proved exceedingly difficult to establish. In this work, we employ two complementary, state-of-the-art, many-body computational methods-constrained-path (CP) auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods-deploying the most recent algorithmic advances in each. Systematic and detailed comparisons between the two methods are performed. The DMRG is extremely reliable on small width cylinders, where we use it to validate the AFQMC. The AFQMC is then used to study wide systems as well as fully periodic systems, to establish that we have reached the thermodynamic limit. The ground state is found to be nonsuperconducting in the moderate to strong coupling regime in the vicinity of optimal hole doping.

Abstract:We use a renormalized mean-field theory to study the Gutzwiller projected Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer states of the extended Hubbard model in the large U limit or the t-t '-J-J ' model on a two-dimensional checkerboard lattice. At small t(')/t, the frustration due to the diagonal terms of t ' and J ' does not alter the d(x)(2)-y(2)-wave pairing symmetry, and the negative (positive) t '/t enhances (suppresses) the pairing order parameter. At large t '/t, the ground state has an s-s wave symmetry. At the intermediate t '/t, the ground state is d+id or d+is wave with time reversal symmetry broken.

Abstract:We present a two dimensional model of superconductivity where bosonization of fermions is described by topological fermion-boson duality. The model solves the discrepancy between theoretical and empirical values of penetration depth and explains the appearence of quantized vortex lines in supercunductors in accord with cyclotron motion of supercunducting electrons.

Abstract:We study the Hubbard model on the square lattice coupled in addition to the optical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) phonons, using the singular-mode functional renormalization group method. At half filling and in the absence of the Hubbard interaction U, we find the degenerate spin-density-wave–charge-density-wave–s-wave-superconductivity state at smaller electron-phonon coupling strength λ and higher phonon frequency ω, and the valence bond solid (VBS) state at larger λ and lower ω. After switching on a positive U, the VBS state is suppressed, while the spin-density wave (SDW) state is enhanced. At finite doping, the SSH phonon is found to favor s-wave superconductivity (sSC) at U=0. With increasing positive U, we find d-wave superconductivity (dSC) and incommensurate SDW states. In a narrow window of moderate U and λ, we also find the incommensurate VBS state. The sSC and dSC here can be naturally related to the charge-density wave (CDW) and SDW fluctuations, both of which can be triggered by the SSH phonons. In contrast, the repulsive interaction U enhances SDW but suppresses CDW fluctuations. Our results at half filling are consistent with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) and provide insights at finite doping where QMC may suffer from the minus sign problem.

Abstract:Based on an extended Hubbard model and a simplified version of the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation, we explore the charge-density wave (CDW) and superconductivity in the layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). A quantitative analysis on a simplified model of the $2H\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Ta}{\mathrm{S}}_{2}$ is presented. It is demonstrated that the CDW may originate from a combined effect of the scattering between flat bands and an intrinsic property of the off-site Coulomb repulsions. Moreover, the effect of the off-site Coulomb repulsion on the competition of the CDW and superconductivity is elaborated.

Abstract:We study $d$-wave superconductivity(SC) in the Hubbard model on the isotropic triangular lattice described by the hopping parameter $t$ and on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ at zero temperature and half-filling using the variational cluster approximation. We found that the $d_{xy}$ SC is the ground state below the Mott insulator phase $U/t \lesssim 6$, and the energy of chiral $d+id$ SC is slightly higher than the $d_{xy}$ SC. The energy difference between the normal and $d_{xy}$ states is about $0.02t \sim 0.06t$ for $U/t \simeq 5$. This result is semi-quantitatively consistent with the SC transition temperature $T_K=3.9$ K of $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, where $t$ is estimated to be about $0.06$ eV, and the predicted pairing symmetry $d_{xy}$ agrees with the STM observations. The energy difference between the $d+id$ and $d_{xy}$ is about $0.01t\sim 0.03t$ for $U/t \simeq 5$ so the transition from $d+id$ to $d_{xy}$, or some effects of $d+id$ in $d_{xy}$ phase may be observed in experiments for $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$.

Abstract:Numerical studies of the two-dimensional Hubbard model have shown that it exhibits the basic phenomena seen in the cuprate materials. At half-filling one finds an antiferromagnetic Mott-Hubbard groundstate. When it is doped, a pseudogap appears and at low temperature d-wave pairing and striped states are seen. In addition, there is a delicate balance between these various phases. Here we review evidence for this and then discuss what numerical studies tell us about the structure of the interaction which is responsible for pairing in this model.

Abstract:The Hubbard and closely related t-J models are exciting platforms for unconventional superconductivity. Through state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group calculations using the grand canonical ensembles, we address open issues regarding the ground-state phase diagram of the extended t-J model on a square lattice in the parameter regime relevant to cuprate superconductors. On large 8-leg cylinders, we demonstrate that the pure t-J model with only nearest-neighbor hoppings and superexchange interactions, for a wide range of hole doping ($\delta = 0.1 - 0.2$), hosts an exotic SC state where the d-wave and unidirectional pair density wave SC co-exist with spin and charge bond orders. Furthermore, a small next nearest neighbor hopping $t_2$ suppresses the pair density wave and other co-coexisting orders, leading to a d-wave SC phase in both electron- and hole-doped cuprate model systems. We reveal a simple mechanism for SC in the t-J model, in which the nearest neighbor hopping plays an essential role in driving the formation of Cooper pairs with real-space sign oscillations balancing the competition between the kinetic and exchange energies. Our work validates the t-J model as a proper minimum model for describing fundamental physics of cuprate superconductors

Competition between $d$-wave and $d$+$is$-wave superconductivity in the Hubbard model on a checkerboard lattice

Abstract:By employing determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate a checkerboard lattice with next-nearest-neighbor hopping $t'$ as the frustration-control parameter, which exhibits an energetically partial flat-band in the system. Our numerical simulation identifies the dominant pairing symmetry of the checkerboard lattice Hubbard model, and we reveal the competition between the $d$-wave and $d+is$ wave in the parameter space of electron filling $\avg{n}$ and frustration control parameter $t^{\prime}/t$. To ensure the reliability and accuracy of our results, we evaluate the sign problem. We also find that the spin susceptibility, the effective pairing interactions of different pairing symmetries and the superconducting instability are enhanced as the on-site Coulomb interaction increases, demonstrating that superconductivity is driven by strong electron--electron correlation. Our work provides a further understanding of pairing symmetry in the Hubbard model and improves prospects for exploring rich correlated behaviors in frustrated systems.

Exact Demonstration of pair-density-wave superconductivity in the $σ_z$-Hubbard model

Abstract:Describing and achieving `unconventional' superconductivity remains a forefront challenge in quantum many-body physics. Here we use a unitary mapping, combined with the well-established properties of the attractive Hubbard model to demonstrate rigorously a Hamiltonian with a low temperature pair-density-wave (PDW) phase. We also show that the same mapping, when applied to the widely accepted properties of the repulsive Hubbard model, leads to a Hamiltonian exhibiting triplet $d$-wave PDW superconductivity and an unusual combination of ferro- and antiferro-magnetic spin correlations. We then demonstrate the persistence of the $d$-wave PDW in a Hamiltonian derived from the mapping of the extended $t$-$J$ model in the large-$U$ limit. Furthermore, through strategic manipulation of the nearest-neighbor hopping signs of spin-down electrons, we illustrate the attainability of PDW superconductivity at other momenta. The intertwining of different magnetic and exotic pairing correlations noted here may have connections to experimental observations in spin-triplet candidates like UTe$_2$.

Abstract:We study the electronic instabilities of the Hubbard model in the 1/6 hole-doped Kagome lattice using the variational cluster approach. The 1/6 hole doping is unique in the sense that the Fermi level is at the van Hove singularity and the Fermi surface has a perfect nesting. In this case, a density wave is usually realized. However, we demonstrate here that the chiral d(x2-y2) + id(xy) superconducting state is most favorable when a small Hubbard interaction U (U < 3.0t) is introduced, and a scalar chiral spin order is realized at large U (U > 5.5t). Between them, a spin-disordered insulating state is proposed.

Abstract:The possible heavy fermion superconductivity is carefully reexamined in the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model with an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg superexchange between local magnetic moments. To establish an effective mean field theory in the limit of paramagnetic heavy Fermi liquid and near the half-filling case, we find that the spinon singlet pairing from the local antiferromagnetic short-range correlations can reduce the ground state energy substantially. In the presence of the Kondo screening effect, the Cooper pairs between the conduction electrons are induced. Depending on the ratio of the Heisenberg and the Kondo exchange couplings, the resulting superconducting state is characterized by either a d-wave nodal or d-wave nodeless state, and a continuous phase transition exists between these two states. These results are related to some quasi-two-dimensional heavy fermion superconductors.

Abstract:We study the square-lattice extended Hubbard model with on-site $U$ and nearest-neighbor $V$ interactions by exact diagonalization. We show that non-equilibrium quench dynamics can help determine the equilibrium phase transition boundaries, which agree with the calculations of fidelity metric, dynamical structure factor, and correlation function. At half filling, the phase diagrams in the strong-coupling regime include spin density wave and $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductivity at large positive $U$, charge density wave (extended $s^*$-wave superconductivity) at large positive (negative) $V$, and $s$-wave superconductivity at large negative $U$ with vanishing $V$. The energies of different particle sectors also help determine the phase separation region. With carrier doping, charge fluctuation result in strong competition between different orders, making it more difficult to identify the leading instability on finite-size cluster. Nevertheless, the more exotic $p$-wave superconducting pairing is found to be enhanced when the system is heavily overdoped by $37.5\%-50\%$ holes, especially in interaction parameter range relevant to the cuprate superconductors.

Abstract:Increasing numerical studies showed that the simplest Hubbard model on the square lattice with strong repulsion may not exhibit high-temperature superconductivity (SC). It is desired to look for other possible microscopic mechanism of realizing high-temperature SC. Here, we explore the interplay between the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) electron-phonon coupling (EPC) and the Hubbard repulsion by density-matrix-renormalization-group (DMRG) simulations. Our state-of-the-art DMRG study showed convincingly that the interplay between strong Hubbard $U$ and moderate Su-Schrieffer-Heeger EPC $\lambda$ can induce robust $d$-wave SC. The SSH-type EPC can generates effective antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions between neighboring sites, which plays a crucial role in the interplay of inducing robust $d$-wave SC. Specifically, for $U=8t$, we find that $d$-wave SC emerges when $\lambda>\lambda_c$ with a moderate critical value $\lambda_c=0.1\sim 0.2$. Our results might shed new light to understanding high-temperature SC in cuprates as well as pave a possible new route in looking for high-temperature SC in other quantum materials with both strong $U$ and moderate $\lambda$.

Ground state phase diagram and superconductivity of the doped Hubbard model on six-leg square cylinders

Abstract:We have studied the ground state properties of Hubbard model on long six-leg square cylinders with doped hole concentration per site $5.55\% \leq \delta\leq 12.5\%$ using density-matrix renormalization group. By keeping a large number of states for long system sizes, we find that the nature of the ground state is remarkably sensitive to the presence of next-nearest-neighbor electron hopping $t'$. In the positive $t'$ side, we find a robust $d$-wave superconducting (SC) phase characterized by coexisting quasi-long-range SC and charge density wave (CDW) correlations. Without $t'$ the ground state forms an insulating stripe phase with long-range CDW order but short-range spin-spin and SC correlations. In stark contrast to four-leg cylinders, our results show that the lightly doped Hubbard model on six-leg cylinders remains insulating in the negative $t'$ side where the SC correlations decay exponentially with short correlation lengths. In the larger negative $t'$ side, the doped holes form a novel holon Wigner crystal with one doped hole per emergent unit cell and short-range spin-spin correlations.

Abstract:We consider a Hubbard model on a square lattice with an additional interaction, $W$, which depends upon the square of a near-neighbor hopping. At half-filling and a constant value of the Hubbard repulsion, increasing the strength of the interaction $W$ drives the system from an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator to a $d_{x^2 -y^2}$ superconductor. This conclusion is reached on the basis of zero temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulations on lattice sizes up to $16 \times 16$.

Abstract:For over half a century, the Hubbard model has played a paradigmatic role in attempts to understand quantum phenomena exhibited by correlated electrons in solids. Despite a substantial effort and the apparent simplicity of the model, its behavior in many important regimes has remained unknown. Here we study superfluidity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with controlled error bars up to the coupling strength U = 4 and filling factor . We show, by means of unbiased diagrammatic Monte Carlo simulations, that in this regime the superfluid transition is governed by Fermi liquid physics with an emergent weak BCS-type coupling driving the instability. The corresponding ground-state phase diagram in the plane describes the competition between the superfluid states of p- and d-wave symmetry. We also report dimensionless coupling constants in this effective BCS regime.

Abstract:A new method for estimating the parameter ensuring the fulfillment of the Mermin-Wagner theorem in the strong coupling diagram technique (SCDT) for the two-dimensional Hubbard model is suggested. With the precise parameter value, calculated magnetic quantities are in good agreement with the results of numeric and optical-lattice experiments. Obtained spin and charge vertices are used for investigating superconductivity in the $t$-$U$ and $t$-$t'$-$t"$-$U$ Hubbard models in the regime of strong correlations. We found no superconducting transition in the $t$-$U$ model. In the $t$-$t'$-$t"$-$U$ model, the transition occurs for the singlet $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing at $T_c\approx0.016t$. The difference between the two models is in the renormalized hopping describing electron motion in SCDT. In the $t$-$U$ model, it vanishes for momenta $(\pi,0)$, $(0,\pi)$ of extrema of the $d$-wave order parameter, while the hopping is finite in the $t$-$t'$-$t"$-$U$ model. In the one-band model, there are optimal values of $t'$ and $t"$ ensuring the highest $T_c$.
