Abstract:We recall several categories of graphs which are useful for describing homotopy-coherent versions of generalized operads (e.g. cyclic operads, modular operads, properads, and so on), and give new, uniform definitions for their morphisms. This allows for straightforward comparisons, and we use this to show that certain free-forgetful adjunctions between categories of generalized operads can be realized at the level of presheaves. This includes adjunctions between operads and cyclic operads, between dioperads and augmented cyclic operads, and betweeen wheeled properads and modular operads.

Admissible subcategories of noncommutative curves

Abstract:We study admissible subcategories of the derived categories of smooth noncommutative curves as classified by Reiten-van den Bergh. We prove phantom subcategories do not exist in these derived categories and we obtain a complete classification of the admissible subcategories of the bounded derived category of representations of an acyclic quiver.

$n$-Extension closed subcategories of $n$-exangulated categories

Abstract:Let $n$ be a positive integer. We show that an $n$-extension closed subcategory of an $n$-exangulated category naturally inherits an $n$-exangulated structure through restriction of the ambient $n$-exangulated structure. Furthermore, we show that a strong version of the Obscure Axiom holds for $n$-exangulated categories, where $n \geq 2$. This allows us to characterize $n$-exact categories as $n$-exangulated categories with monic inflations and epic deflations. We also show that for an extriangulated category condition (WIC), which was introduced by Nakaoka and Palu, is equivalent to the underlying additive category being weakly idempotent complete. We then apply our results to show that $n$-extension closed subcategories of an $n$-exact category are again $n$-exact. Furthermore, we recover and improve results of Klapproth and Zhou.

Abstract:Adhesive and quasiadhesive categories provide a general framework for the study of algebraic graph rewriting systems. In a quasiadhesive category any two regular subobjects have a join which is again a regular subobject. Vice versa, if regular monos are adhesive, then the existence of a regular join for any pair of regular subobjects entails quasiadhesivity. It is also known (quasi)adhesive categories can be embedded in a Grothendieck topos via a functor preserving pullbacks and pushouts along (regular) monomorphisms. In this paper we extend these results to $\mathcal{M}, \mathcal{N}$-adhesive categories, a concept recently introduced to generalize the notion of (quasi)adhesivity. We introduce the notion of $\mathcal{N}$-adhesive morphism, which allows us to express $\mathcal{M}, \mathcal{N}$-adhesivity as a condition on the subobjects's posets. Moreover, $\mathcal{N}$-adhesive morphisms allows us to show how an $\mathcal{M},\mathcal{N}$-adhesive category can be embedded into a Grothendieck topos, preserving pullbacks and $\mathcal{M}, \mathcal{N}$-pushouts.

Abstract:For an integer n ⩾ 3, we introduce a simultaneous generalization of ( n − 2)-exact categories and n -angulated categories, referred to as one-sided n -suspended categories. Notably, one-sided n -angulated categories are specific instances of this structure. We establish a framework for transitioning from these generalized categories to their n -angulated counterparts. Additionally, we present a method for constructing n -angulated quotient categories from Frobenius n -prile categories. Our results unify and extend the previous work of Jasso on n -exact categories, Lin on ( n + 2)-angulated categories, and Li on one-sided suspended categories.

Computads and string diagrams for $n$-sesquicategories

Abstract:An $n$-sesquicategory is an $n$-globular set with strictly associative and unital composition and whiskering operations, which are however not required to satisfy the Godement interchange laws which hold in $n$-categories. In <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2202.09293" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2202.09293">arXiv:2202.09293</a> we showed how these can be defined as algebras over a monad $T_n^{D^s}$ whose operations are simple string diagrams. In this paper, we give an explicit description of computads for the monad $T_n^{D^s}$ and we prove that the category of computads for this monad is a presheaf category. We use this to describe a string diagram notation for representing arbitrary composites in $n$-sesquicategories. This is a step towards a theory of string diagrams for semistrict $n$-categories.

A functorial approach to $n$-abelian categories

Abstract:We develop a functorial approach to the study of $n$-abelian categories by reformulating their axioms in terms of their categories of finitely presented functors. Such an approach allows the use of classical homological algebra and representation theory techniques to understand higher homological algebra. As an application, we present two possible generalizations of the axioms "every monomorphism is a kernel" and "every epimorphism is a cokernel" of an abelian category to $n$-abelian categories. We also specialize our results to modules over rings, thereby describing when the category of finitely generated projective modules over a ring is $n$-abelian. Moreover, we establish a correspondence for $n$-abelian categories with additive generators, which extends the higher Auslander correspondence.

Abstract:Let C be an (n+2)-angulated category with an n-suspension functor Σn and X be a cluster-tilting subcategory of C. Then we show that the quotient category C/X is an n-abelian category, and C/X is equivalent to an n-cluster tilting subcategory of an abelian category mod(Σ−nX). In addition, if C has a Serre functor, we also prove that mod(Σ−nX) is Gorenstein of Gorenstein dimension at most n. As an application, we generalize recent results of Jacobsen-Jørgensen and Koenig-Zhu.

Abstract:We describe a category of Feynman graphs and show how it relates to compact symmetric multicategories (coloured modular operads) just as linear orders relate to categories and rooted trees relate to multicategories. More specifically we obtain the following nerve theorem: compact symmetric multicategories can be characterised as presheaves on the category of Feynman graphs subject to a Segal condition. This text is a write-up of the second-named author's QPL6 talk; a more detailed account of this material will appear elsewhere.

Generic Compacta from Relations between Finite Graphs: Theory Building and Examples

Abstract:In recent work, the authors developed a simple method of constructing topological spaces from certain well-behaved partially ordered sets -- those coming from sequences of relations between finite sets. This method associates a given poset with its spectrum, which is a compact T_1 topological space. In this paper, we focus on the case where such finite sets have a graph structure and the relations belong to a given graph category. We relate topological properties of the spectrum to combinatorial properties of the graph categories involved. We then utilise this to exhibit elementary combinatorial constructions of well-known continua as Fraïssé limits of finite graphs in categories with relational morphisms.

The monotone-light factorization for n-categories via n-preorders

Abstract:Starting with a symmetric monoidal adjunction with certain properties, one derives another symmetric monoidal adjunction with the same properties between the respective categories of all V-categories. If one begins with a reflection of a full replete subcategory, the derived adjunction is also a reflection of the same kind. Semi-left-exactness (also called admissibility in categorical Galois theory) or the stronger stable units property is inherited by the derived reflection. Applying these results, one concludes that the reflection of the category of all n-categories into the category of n-preorders has stable units. Then, it is also shown that this reflection determines a monotone-light factorization system on n-categories, n>=1, and that the light morphisms are precisely the n-functors faithful with respect to n-cells. In order to achieve such results, it was also shown that n-functors surjective both on vertically composable triples of horizontally composable pairs of n-cells, and on horizontally composable triples of vertically composable pairs of n-cells are effective descent morphisms in the category of all n-categories nCat, n>=1.

Abstract:Additive categories play a fundamental role in mathematics and related disciplines. Given an additive category equipped with a biadditive functor, one can construct its category of extensions, which encodes important structural information. We study how functors between categories of extensions relate to those at the level of the original categories. When the additive categories in question are $n$-exangulated, this leads to a characterisation of $n$-exangulated functors. Our approach enables us to study $n$-exangulated categories from a $2$-categorical perspective. We introduce $n$-exangulated natural transformations and characterise them using categories of extensions. Our characterisations allow us to establish a $2$-functor between the $2$-categories of small $n$-exangulated categories and small exact categories. A similar result with no smallness assumption is also proved. We employ our theory to produce various examples of $n$-exangulated functors and natural transformations. Although the motivation for this article stems from representation theory and the study of $n$-exangulated categories, our results are widely applicable: several require only an additive category equipped with a biadditive functor with no extra assumptions; others can be applied by endowing an additive category with its split $n$-exangulated structure.

Manifold Diagrams for Higher Categories

Abstract:We develop a graphical calculus of manifold diagrams which generalises string and surface diagrams to arbitrary dimensions. Manifold diagrams are pasting diagrams for $(\infty, n)$-categories that admit a semi-strict composition operation for which associativity and unitality is strict. The weak interchange law satisfied by composition of manifold diagrams is determined geometrically through isotopies of diagrams. By building upon framed combinatorial topology, we can classify critical points in isotopies at which the arrangement of cells changes. This allows us to represent manifold diagrams combinatorially and use them as shapes with which to probe $(\infty, n)$-categories, presented as $n$-fold Segal spaces. Moreover, for any system of labels for the singularities in a manifold diagram, we show how to generate a free $(\infty, n)$-category.

Abstract:A computable graph is computably categorical if any two computable presentations of the graph are computably isomorphic. In this paper we investigate the class of computably categorical graphs. We restrict ourselves to strongly locally finite graphs; these are the graphs all of whose components are finite. We present a necessary and sufficient condition for certain classes of strongly locally finite graphs to be computably categorical. We prove that if there exists an infinite $\Delta_2^0$-set of components that can be properly embedded into infinitely many components of the graph then the graph is not computably categorical. We outline the construction of a strongly locally finite computably categorical graph with an infinite chain of properly embedded components.
