Abstract:The electromagnetic characteristics of the fractional quantum Hall states are studied by formulating an effective vector-field theory that takes into account projection to the exact Landau levels from the beginning. The effective theory is constructed, via bosonization, from the electromagnetic response of an incompressible and uniform state. It does not refer to either the composite-boson or composite-fermion picture, but properly reproduces the results of the standard bosonic and fermionic Chern-Simons approaches, thus revealing the universality of the long-wavelength characteristics of the quantum Hall states and the associated quasiparticles. In particular, the dual-field Lagrangian of Lee and Zhang is obtained without invoking the composite-boson picture. An argument is also given to verify, within a vector-field version of the fermionic Chern-Simons theory, the identification by Goldhaber and Jain of a composite fermion as a dressed electron.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to understand the electromagnetic properties in the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) and construct an effective vector - field theory to describe these properties. Specifically, the author aims to solve this problem in the following ways:
1. **Consider the projection of Landau levels**: The traditional Chern - Simons (CS) theory does not explicitly consider the projection of Landau levels when describing FQHE. In this paper, by introducing the projection of Landau levels from the very beginning, the consistency between the theory and Landau quantization is ensured.
2. **Do not rely on the composite boson or composite fermion picture**: The author hopes to construct a theoretical framework that neither depends on composite bosons nor on composite fermions, but directly starts from the electromagnetic response of Hall electrons and constructs an effective vector - field theory through the bosonization technique.
3. **Reveal universality**: The author hopes to reveal the universal properties of FQHE states and their associated quasiparticles at long wavelengths through this method, that is, these properties are independent of the specific composite boson or composite fermion picture.
### Main research contents and methods
- **Research on electromagnetic response**: The author first studied the response of an electron system confined to a plane in a perpendicular magnetic field to an external electromagnetic potential. By introducing the Hubbard - Stratonovich field, the Coulomb interaction is linearized, and precise calculations are carried out using the Landau level structure.
- **Bosonization and construction of effective theory**: Based on the above - mentioned electromagnetic response, the author constructs an effective vector - field theory describing the FQHE state through the bosonization technique. This theory can correctly describe the long - wavelength properties of the system and does not require the introduction of the concepts of composite bosons or composite fermions.
- **Verify existing results**: The author proves that the constructed theory can reproduce the random - phase - approximation (RPA) results of the standard Bose and Fermi CS theories, thus verifying its correctness and universality.
### Key formulas
1. **Representation of the Hamiltonian**:
\[
H=\frac{1}{2M}\left(p + eA_{B}(x)+eA(x,t)\right)^{2}+eA_{0}(x,t)
\]
where \(A_{B}(x)\) is the vector potential providing a uniform magnetic field \(B_{z} = B>0\).
2. **Effective Lagrangian**:
\[
L_{\text{eff}}[b]=-A_{\mu}\epsilon^{\mu\nu\rho}\partial_{\nu}b_{\rho}-2\pi\tilde{j}_{\mu}b_{\mu}+L^{(0)}[b]-\frac{1}{2}\delta b_{12}V\delta b_{12}
\]
where \(L^{(0)}[b]\) contains the background field and kinetic terms.
3. **Correction term related to the filling factor**:
\[
\sigma(\nu)=1 + 2n-\frac{n(n + 1)}{\nu}
\]
within each integer interval \(n<\nu\leq n + 1\).
Through these methods and formulas, the author successfully constructs an effective vector - field theory that can describe the electromagnetic properties in the FQHE state and reveals the universality of these properties at long wavelengths.
