Abstract:Around the early 2000-s, Bourgain, Katz and Tao introduced an arithmetic approach to study Kakeya-type problems. They showed that the Euclidean Kakeya conjecture follows from a natural problem in additive combinatorics, now referred to as the `Arithmetic Kakeya Conjecture'. We consider a higher dimensional variant of this problem and prove an upper bound using a certain iterative argument. The main new ingredient in our proof is a general way to strengthen the sum-difference inequalities of Katz and Tao which might be of independent interest. As a corollary, we obtain a new lower bound for the Minkowski dimension of $(n, d)$-Besicovitch sets.

Abstract:Restricted isometry constants play an important role in compressed sensing. In the literature, E.J. Candes has proven that delta(2k) < root 2 -1 approximate to 0.4142 is a sufficient condition for the l(1) minimization problem having a k-sparse solution. Later, S. Foucart and M. Lai have improved the condition to delta(2k) < 0.4531 and S. Foucart has improved the bound to delta(2k) < 0.4652. In 2010, T. Cai, L Wang and G. Xu have improved the condition to delta(2k) < 0.4721 for the cases such that k is a multiple of 4 or k is very large and S. Foucart has improved the bound to delta(2k) < 0.4734 for large values of k. In this paper, we have improved the sufficient condition to delta(2k) < 0.4931 for general k. Also, in some special cases, the sufficient condition can be improved to delta(2k) < 0.6569. New bounds in the discrete analogue of Minkowski's second theorem

Abstract:We adapt an argument of Tao and Vu to show that if $\lambda_1\le\cdots\le\lambda_d$ are the successive minima of an origin-symmetric convex body $K$ with respect to some lattice $\Lambda<\mathbb{R}^d$, and if we set $k=\max\{j:\lambda_j\le1\}$, then $K$ contains at most $2^k(1+\frac{\lambda_k}2)^k/\lambda_1\cdots\lambda_k$ lattice points. This provides improved bounds in a conjecture of Betke, Henk and Wills (1993), and verifies that conjecture asymptotically as $\lambda_k\to0$. We also obtain a similar result without the symmetry assumption.

An improved bound on the Hausdorff dimension of sticky Kakeya sets in $\mathbb{R}^4$

Abstract:Kakeya sets are compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ that contain a unit line segment pointing in every direction. The Kakeya conjecture states that such sets must have Hausdorff dimension $n$. The property of stickiness was first discovered by Katz-Łaba-Tao in their 1999 breakthrough paper on the Kakeya problem. Then Wang-Zahl formalized the definition of a sticky Kakeya set, and proposed a special case of the Kakeya conjecture for such sets. Specifically this conjecture states that sticky Kakeya sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$ have Hausdorff dimension $n$ and Wang-Zahl went on to prove the conjecture for $n=3$. A planebrush is a geometric object which is a higher dimensional analogue of Wolff's hairbrush. Using the planebrush argument, Katz-Zahl showed that Kakeya sets in $\mathbb{R}^4$ have Hausdorff dimension at least 3.059. If we restrict our attention to sticky Kakeya sets, we can improve upon this bound by combining the planebrush result with additional stickiness property. To be precise, we will show in this paper that sticky Kakeya sets in $\mathbb{R}^4$ have dimension at least 3.25.

Abstract:In a recent paper, Du and Zhang (Ann Math 189:837–861, 2019) proved a fractal Fourier restriction estimate and used it to establish the sharp estimate on the Schrödinger maximal function in , . In this paper, we show that the Du–Zhang estimate is the endpoint of a family of fractal restriction estimates such that each member of the family (other than the original) implies a sharp Kakeya result in that is closely related to the polynomial Wolff axioms. We also prove that all the estimates of our family are true in .

Abstract:These are related, because the ideas involved in (1) form one of the main foundations for (2). More precisely, the proof of the Yau conjecture relies on an extension of the partial C estimate to metrics with conic singularities. Gang Tian has made claims to credit for these results. The purpose of this document is to rebut these claims on the grounds of originality, priority and correctness of the mathematical arguments. We acknowledge Tian’s many contributions to this field in the past and, partly for this reason, we have avoided raising our objections publicly over the last 15 months, but it seems now that this is the course we have to take in order to document the facts. In addition, this seems to us the responsible action to take and one we owe to our colleagues, especially those affected by these developments.
New bounds on a generalization of Tuza's conjecture

Abstract:For a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$, let $\nu^{(m)}(H)$ denote the maximum size of a set $S$ of edges of $H$ whose pairwise intersection has size less than $m$. Let $\tau^{(m)}(H)$ denote the minimum size of a set $S$ of $m$-sets of $V(H)$ such that every edge of $H$ contains some $m$-set from $S$. A conjecture by Aharoni and Zerbib, which generalizes a conjecture of Tuza on the size of minimum edge covers of triangles of a graph, states that for a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$, $\tau^{(k - 1)}(H)/\nu^{(k - 1)}(H) \leq \left \lceil \frac{k + 1}{2} \right \rceil$. In this paper, we show that this generalization of Tuza's conjecture holds when $\nu^{(k - 1)}(H) \leq 3$. As a corollary, we obtain a graph class which satisfies Tuza's conjecture. We also prove various bounds on $\tau^{(m)}(H)/\nu^{(m)}(H)$ for other values of $m$ as well as some bounds on the fractional analogues of these numbers.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce bilinear Bochner–Riesz means associated with convex domains in the plane and study their -boundedness properties for a wide range of exponents. One of the important aspects of our proof involves the use of bilinear Kakeya maximal function in the context of bilinear Bochner–Riesz problem. This amounts to establishing suitable -estimates for the later. We also point out some natural connections between bilinear Kakeya maximal function and Lacey's bilinear maximal function.

New lower bounds on kissing numbers and spherical codes in high dimensions

Abstract:Let the kissing number $K(d)$ be the maximum number of non-overlapping unit balls in $\mathbb R^d$ that can touch a given unit ball. Determining or estimating the number $K(d)$ has a long history, with the value of $K(3)$ being the subject of a famous discussion between Gregory and Newton in 1694. We prove that, as the dimension $d$ goes to infinity, $$ K(d)\ge (1+o(1)){\frac{\sqrt{3\pi}}{4\sqrt2}}\,\log\frac{3}{2}\cdot d^{3/2}\cdot \Big(\frac{2}{\sqrt{3}}\Big)^{d}, $$ thus improving the previously best known bound of Jenssen, Joos and Perkins by a factor of $\log(3/2)/\log(9/8)+o(1)=3.442...$. Our proof is based on the novel approach from Jenssen, Joos and Perkins that uses the hard core sphere model of an appropriate fugacity. Similar constant-factor improvements in lower bounds are also obtained for general spherical codes, as well as for the expected density of random sphere packings in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^d$.

Abstract:We provide a condition on a set of directions $\Omega \subset \mathbb{S}^1$ ensuring that the associated directional maximal operator $M_\Omega$ is unbounded on $L^p(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for every $1 \leq p < \infty$. The techniques of proof extend ideas of Bateman and Katz involving probabilistic construction of Kakeya-type sets involving sticky maps and Bernoulli percolation.

Abstract:We construct a compact set in R2 of measure 0 containing a piece of a parabola of every aperture between 1 and 2. As a consequence, we improve lower bounds for the $L^p$-$L^q$ norm of the corresponding maximal operator for a range of $p$, $q$. Moreover, our construction can be generalised from parabolas to a family of curves with cinematic curvature.

Abstract:In this paper we settle long-standing questions regarding the combinatorial complexity of Minkowski sums of polytopes: We give a tight upper bound for the number of faces of a Minkowski sum, including a characterization of the case of equality. We similarly give a (tight) upper bound theorem for mixed faces of Minkowski sums. This has a wide range of applications and generalizes the classical the Upper Bound Theorems of McMullen and Stanley. Our main tool is relative Stanley--Reisner theory, a powerful generalization of the algebraic theory of simplicial complexes inaugurated by Hochster, Reisner, and Stanley. A key feature of our theory is the ability to accomodate topological as well as combinatorial restrictions. We illustrate this by providing several simplicial isoperimetric and reverse isoperimetric inequalities.

Abstract:We study spectral properties and geometric functional inequalities on Riemannian manifolds of dimension $\ge3$ with (finite or countably many) conical singularities $\{z_i\}_{i\in\mathfrak I}$ in the neighborhood of which the largest lower bound for the Ricci curvature is \begin{equation}\label{d2} k(x)\simeq K_i-\frac{s_i}{d^2(z_i,x)}. \end{equation} Thus none of the existing Bakry-Émery inequalities or curvature-dimension conditions apply. In particular, $k$ does not belong to the Kato (or (extended Kato) class, and $(M,g)$ is not tamed. Manifolds with such a singular Ricci bound appear quite naturally., e.g. as cones over spheres of radius $>1$ For such manifolds with conical singularities we will prove * a version of the Bakry-Émery inequality * a novel Hardy inequality * a spectral gap estimate.

Abstract:In $\mathbb R^n$, we parametrize Kakeya sets using Kakeya maps. A Kakeya map is defined to be a map $$\phi:B^{n-1}(0,1)\times [0,1]\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{n}, (v,t)\mapsto (c(v)+tv,t),$$ where $ c:B^{n-1}(0,1)\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{n-1}$. The associated Kakeya set is defined to be $ K:=\text{Im} (\phi). $ We show that the Kakeya set $K$ has positive measure if either one of the following conditions is true. (1) $c$ is continuous and $c|_{S^{n-2}}\in C^\alpha(S^{n-2})$ for some $\alpha>\frac{(n-2)n}{(n-1)^2}$, (2) $c$ is continuous and $c|_{S^{n-2}}\in W^{1,p}(S^{n-2})$ for some $p>n-2$.

Abstract:In this paper we explore questions regarding the Minkowski sum of the boundaries of convex sets. Motivated by a question suggested to us by V.~Milman regarding the volume of $\partial K+ \partial T$ where $K$ and $T$ are convex bodies, we prove sharp volumetric lower bounds for the Minkowski average of the boundaries of sets with connected boundary, as well as some related results.

Abstract:In a seminal paper "Volumen und Oberfläche" (1903), Minkowski introduced the basic notion of mixed volumes and the corresponding inequalities that lie at the heart of convex geometry. The fundamental importance of characterizing the extremals of these inequalities was already emphasized by Minkowski himself, but has to date only been resolved in special cases. In this paper, we completely settle the extremals of Minkowski's quadratic inequality, confirming a conjecture of R. Schneider. Our proof is based on the representation of mixed volumes of arbitrary convex bodies as Dirichlet forms associated to certain highly degenerate elliptic operators. A key ingredient of the proof is a quantitative rigidity property associated to these operators.

On the coincidence of the Hausdorff and box dimensions for some affine-invariant sets

Abstract:Let $ K $ be a compact subset of the $d$-torus invariant under an expanding diagonal endomorphism with $ s $ distinct eigenvalues. Suppose the symbolic coding of $K$ satisfies weak specification. When $ s \leq 2 $, we prove that the following three statements are equivalent: (A) the Hausdorff and box dimensions of $ K $ coincide; (B) with respect to some gauge function, the Hausdorff measure of $ K $ is positive and finite; (C) the Hausdorff dimension of the measure of maximal entropy on $ K $ attains the Hausdorff dimension of $ K $. When $ s \geq 3 $, we find some examples in which (A) does not hold but (C) holds, which is a new phenomenon not appearing in the planar cases. Through a different probabilistic approach, we establish the equivalence of (A) and (B) for Bedford-McMullen sponges.

Abstract:We give an explicit lower bound, in terms of the distance from the boundary, for the Kobayashi metric of a certain class of bounded pseudoconvex domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$ with $\mathcal{C}^2$-smooth boundary using the regularity theory for the complex Monge--Ampere equation. Using such an estimate, we construct a family of unbounded Kobayashi hyperbolic domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$ having a certain negative-curvature-type property with respect to the Kobayashi distance. As an application, we prove a Picard-type extension theorem for the latter domains.

On the Betti Numbers of Finite Volume Hyperbolic Manifolds

Abstract:We obtain strong upper bounds for the Betti numbers of compact complex-hyperbolic manifolds. We use the unitary holonomy to improve the results given by the most direct application of the techniques of [DS17]. We also provide effective upper bounds for Betti numbers of compact quaternionic- and Cayley-hyperbolic manifolds in most degrees. More importantly, we extend our techniques to complete finite volume real- and complex-hyperbolic manifolds. In this setting, we develop new monotonicity inequalities for strongly harmonic forms on hyperbolic cusps and employ a new peaking argument to estimate $L^2$-cohomology ranks. Finally, we provide bounds on the de Rham cohomology of such spaces, using a combination of our bounds on $L^2$-cohomology, bounds on the number of cusps in terms of the volume, and the topological interpretation of reduced $L^2$-cohomology on certain rank one locally symmetric spaces.
