Abstract:We demonstrate that films of unconventional (d-wave) superconductor at temperatures $T\lesssim 0.43 T_c$ can exhibit unusual superconducting phases. The new ground states beside the broken gauge and the point group symmetries can spontaneously break (i) continuous translational symmetry and form periodic order parameter structures in the plane of the film, or (ii) time-reversal symmetry and develop supercurrent flowing along the film. These states are result of the strong transverse inhomogeniety present in films with thickness of several coherence lengths. We show a natural similarity between formation of these states and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state.

Dynamics of Vortex Glass Phase in Strongly Type II Superconductors

Abstract:Dynamics of vortices in strongly type-II superconductors with strong disorder is investigated within the frustrated three-dimensional XY model. For two typical models byOlsson [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 077002 (2003)] and Kawamura [Phys. Rev. B 68, 220502 (R) (2003)], strong evidence for the finite temperature vortex glass transition in the unscreened limit is provided by performing large-scale dynamical simulations. The obtained correlation length exponents and the dynamic exponents in both models are different from each other and from those in the three-dimensional gauge glass model. In addition, a genuine continuous depinning transition is observed at zero temperature for both models. A scaling analysis for the thermal rounding of the depinning transition shows a non-Arrhenius type creep motion in the vortex glass phase, contrarily to the recent studies.

Abstract:The interplay between electron-electron interactions and weak localization (or anti-localization) phenomena in two-dimensional systems can significantly enhance the superconducting transition temperature. We develop the theory of quantum fluctuations within such multifractally-enhanced superconducting states in thin films. In conditions of weak disorder, we employ the Finkel'stein nonlinear sigma model to derive an effective action for the superconducting order parameter and the quasiclassical Green's function, meticulously accounting for the influence of quantum fluctuations. This effective action, applicable for interactions of any strength, reveals the critical role of well-known collective modes in a dirty superconductor, and its saddle point analysis leads to modified Usadel and gap equations. These equations comprehensively incorporate the renormalizations stemming from the interplay between interactions and disorder, resulting in the non-trivial energy dependence of the gap function. Notably, our analysis establishes a direct relation between the self-consistent gap equation at the superconducting transition temperature and the known renormalization group equations for interaction parameters in the normal state.

Abstract:We investigate quantum fluctuations in thin superconducting wires. We demonstrate that quantum phase slips dominate the system behavior at low temperatures and are well in the measurable range for sufficiently thin wires. We discuss the effect of dissipation, predict a new quantum superconductor-to-metal (insulator) phase transitions for wires with thicknesses in the 10-nm range, evaluate the resistance R(T) of such wires and compare our results with recent experimental findings.

Abstract:Continuous quantum phase transitions are widely assumed and frequently observed in various systems of quantum particles or spins. Their characteristic trait involves scaling laws governing a second-order, gradual suppression of the order parameter as the quantum critical point is approached. The localization of Cooper pairs in disordered superconductors and the resulting breakdown of superconductivity have long stood as a prototypical example. Here, we show a departure from this paradigm, showcasing that amorphous superconducting films of indium oxide undergo a distinctive, discontinuous first-order quantum phase transition tuned by disorder. Through systematic measurements of the plasmon spectrum in superconducting microwave resonators, we provide evidence for a marked jump of both the zero-temperature superfluid stiffness and the transition temperature at the critical disorder. This discontinuous transition sheds light on the previously overlooked role of repulsive interactions between Cooper pairs and the subsequent competition between superconductivity and insulating Cooper-pair glass. Furthermore, our investigation shows that the critical temperature of the films no longer relates to the pairing amplitude but aligns with the superfluid stiffness, consistent with the pseudogap regime of preformed Cooper pairs. Our findings raise fundamental new questions into the role of disorder in quantum phase transitions and carry implications for superinductances in quantum circuits.

Abstract:Results of the investigation of fluctuation phenomena in bulk type-II superconductors obtained in 1980 - 1984 years are compared with the analogous results obtained at the investigation of high-Tc superconductors (HTSC). It is shown the latter repeat in the main the results obtained before the HTSC discovery. It was discovered in 1981 year that a sharp change of resistive properties is observed below the second critical field, at H_{c4} < H_{c2}, in high quality samples of type-II superconductors. The same was repeated at investigation of high quality HTSC samples and was interpreted as vortex lattice melting. The difference of the (H_{c2} - H_{c4}) values for low- and high-Tc superconductors corresponds with the scaling law obtained in the lowest Landau level approximation. The linear approximation region above H_{c2}, the critical region and the Abrikosov state are considered. It is emphasized that the rigorous Ami-Maki theory should be used for description of paraconductivity in HTSC and "dirty" conventional superconductors. The approximation dependencies obtained from popular Aslamasov-Larkin, Hikami-Larkin and Lawrence-Doniac works do not have a validity region in these superconductors with wide critical region.

Abstract:Fluctuating superconductivity—vestigial Cooper pairing in the resistive state of a material—is usually associated with low dimensionality, strong disorder, or low carrier density. Here, we report single-particle spectroscopic, thermodynamic and magnetic evidence for persistent superconducting fluctuations in the heavily hole-doped cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Tc=66 K) despite the high carrier density. With a sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo calculation, we show how a partially flat band at (π,0) can help enhance superconducting phase fluctuations. Fluctuation and Dimensionality of Superconductivity in High-Tc Thin-Films

Abstract:Strong signal of fluctuation superconductivity has been found in RBa2Cu3O7-δ(R = Y, Gd) superconducting thin films near Tc through careful investigation on resistance transitions. Detailed analyses show that, for both polycrystalline and epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-δ thin films, it tends to be of 2D characteristic when T》Tc, but a crossover from 2D to 3D will occur when T approaches Tc, which is consistent with the prediction of Lawrence-Doniach theory. The 3D-2D crossover can also take place when a rather weak field (1.5G) is applied parallel to Cu-O planes, but it is not the case when H is perpendicular to Cu-O planes, this indicates that there is a weak coupling between Cu-O planes in YBa2Cu3O7-δ. The same study on a GdBa2Cu3O7-δ epitaxial thin films shows that the 2D feature also appeares when T》Tc, but no evidence of 3D has been found when T approaches Tc, this we think is related to the self-moment of Gd ions.

Abstract:We study the amplitude and phase fluctuations of the Ginzburg-Landau quasiorder parameter for superconductors in two spatial dimensions. Starting from the mean-field critical temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}0}$, we calculate the beyond-mean-field critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$ by including thermal fluctuations of the quasiorder parameter within the Gaussian level. Moreover, from our beyond-mean-field results, we derive the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless critical temperature $T_{\rm BKT}$, which takes into account topological vortex-antivortex excitations in the phase fluctuations as well as the amplitude fluctuations, to obtain the shifts of transition temperatures. We elucidate how the Gaussian thermal fluctuations and phase fluctuations associated with vortex excitations affect thermodynamic properties by determining the $H$-$T$ phase diagram for a type-II superconductor and computing the critical behaviors of the heat capacity, which are experimentally accessible, allowing the characterization of the cascade of different kinds of fluctuations in 2D superconductors.

Probable effects of the field of charge carriers' magnetic interactions and the field of temperature fluctuations were taken into account. The order of the phase transition is discussed. Considerations in favor of the applicability of the stochastic dynamical model A to describe the dynamics of this phase transition are given.

Abstract:We address the issue of how triplet superconductivity emerges in an electronic system near a ferromagnetic quantum critical point (FQCP). Previous studies found that the superconducting transition is of second order, and Tc is strongly reduced near the FQCP due to pair-breaking effects from thermal spin fluctuations. In contrast, we demonstrate that near the FQCP, the system avoids pair-breaking effects by undergoing a first order transition at a much larger Tc. A second order superconducting transition emerges only at some distance from the FQCP.

Abstract:The signature for a non-Fermi liquid behavior near a quantum phase transition has been observed in thermal and transport properties of many metallic systems at low temperatures. In the present work we consider specific examples of itinerant ferromagnet as well as antiferromagnet in the limit of vanishing transition temperature. The temperature variation of spin susceptibility, electrical resistivity, specific heat, and NMR relaxation rates at low temperatures is calculated in the limit of infinite exchange enhancement within the frame work of a self consistent spin fluctuation theory. The resulting non-Fermi liquid behavior is due to the presence of the low lying critically damped spin fluctuations in these systems. The theory presented here gives the leading low temperature behavior, as it turns out that the fluctuation correlation term is always smaller than the mean fluctuation field term in three as well as in two space dimensions. A comparison with illustrative experimental results of these properties in some typical systems has been done. Finally we make some remarks on the effect of disorder in these systems.

Abstract:Recent experimental studies on strongly disordered indium oxide films have revealed an unusual first-order quantum phase transition between the superconducting and insulating states (SIT). This transition is characterized by a discontinuous jump from non-zero to zero values of superfluid stiffness at the critical point, contradicting the conventional “scaling scenario” typically associated with SIT. In this paper, we present a theoretical framework for understanding this first-order transition. Our approach is based on the concept of competition between two fundamentally distinct ground states that arise from electron pairs initially localized by strong disorder: the superconducting state and the Coulomb glass insulator. These ground states are distinguished by two crucially different order parameters, suggesting a natural expectation of a discontinuous transition between them at T=0 T = 0 . This transition occurs when the magnitudes of the superconducting gap \Delta Δ and the Coulomb gap E_C E C become comparable. Additionally, we extend our analysis to low non-zero temperatures and provide a mean-field “phase diagram” in the plane of (T/\Delta,E_C/\Delta) ( T / Δ , E C / Δ ) . Our results reveal the existence of a natural upper bound for the kinetic inductance of strongly disordered superconductors.

Abstract:We present results on disordered amorphous films which are expected to undergo a field-tuned Superconductor-Insulator Transition. Based on low-field data and I-V characteristics, we find evidence of a low temperature Metal-to-Superconductor transition. This transition is characterized by hysteretic magnetoresistance and discontinuities in the I-V curves. The metallic phase just above the transition is different from the "Fermi Metal" before superconductivity sets in.

Fluctuation-induced phase in CsCuCl3 in transverse magnetic field: Theory

Abstract:CsCuCl3 is a quantum triangular antiferromagnet, ferromagnetically stacked, with an incommensurate (IC) structure due to a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Because of the classical degeneracy caused by the frustration, fluctuations in CsCuCl3 have extraordinarily large effects, such as the phase transition in longitudinal magnetic field (normal to the planes, parallel to the IC wavenumber q) and the plateau in q in transverse field (perpendicular to q). We argue that fluctuations are responsible also for the new IC phase discovered in transverse field near the Neel temperature T_N, by T. Werner et al. [Solid State Commun. 102, p.609 (1997)]. We develop and analyse the corresponding minimal Landau theory; the effects of fluctuations on the frustration are included phenomenologically, by means of a biquadratic term. The Landau theory gives two IC phases, one familiar from previous studies; properties of the new IC phase, which occupies a pocket of the temperature-field phase diagram near T_N, agree qualitatively with those of the new phase found experimentally.

Thermodynamic Theory of Disordered 2D Superconductors

Abstract:Understanding the roles of disorder and superconducting phase fluctuation in superconductivity has been a long-standing challenge. For example, while the phase fluctuation is expected to destroy the superconductivity of intrinsically disordered two-dimensional (2D) superconductors at any finite temperatures, there have been ample experimental evidences showing robust long-range superconducting order in ultra-thin films and atomic sheets. The observed unique superconducting-insulating transition in 2D samples with sufficiently large amount of disorder also goes beyond the conventional theoretical paradigm. Here we develop a self-consistent thermodynamic theory of the superconducting gap and phase fluctuation in disordered 2D superconductors, starting from a purely microscopic model. It incorporates both quantum and thermal phase fluctuations in the presence of the long-range Coulomb interactions. Our numerical simulation based on the developed theory successfully proves a long-range superconducting order in 2D limit even when temperature is increased away from zero, while the gradually emerging large thermal phase fluctuations with further increasing temperature destroy the superconducting gap. On the other hand, the inhomogeneous quantum phase fluctuations with increasing disorder result in a mixed state of superconducting and normal-state islands, thereby reducing $T_c$. But a robust superconductivity can survive at low temperature even at high disorder, giving rise to the prerequisite of the superconducting-insulating transition. More importantly, our theory shows that the phase fluctuation can be suppressed by increasing carrier density, leading to a carrier density-dependent $T_c$. These findings explain many of the recently observed experimental features of the superconductors in 2D limit and can potentially shed light on the understanding of high-$T_c$ superconductors.

Abstract:We report a comprehensive study of the complex AC conductance of amorphous superconducting InO$_x$ thin films. Using a novel broadband microwave `Corbino' spectrometer we measure the explicit frequency dependency of the complex conductance and the phase stiffness over a range from 0.21 GHz to 15 GHz at temperatures down to 350 mK. Dynamic AC measurements are sensitive to the temporal correlations of the superconducting order parameter in the fluctuation range above $T_c$. Among other aspects, we explicitly demonstrate the critical slowing down of the characteristic fluctuation rate on the approach to the superconducting state and show that its behavior is consistent with vortex-like phase fluctuations and a phase ordering scenario of the transition.

Abstract:The interplay between quenched disorder and critical behavior in quantum phase transitions is conceptually fascinating and of fundamental importance for understanding phase transitions. However, it is still unclear whether or not the quenched disorder influences the universality class of quantum phase transitions. More crucially, the absence of superconducting-metal transitions under in-plane magnetic fields in 2D superconductors imposes constraints on the universality of quantum criticality. Here, we observe the thickness-tuned universality class of superconductor-metal transition by changing the disorder strength in β-W films with varying thickness. The finite-size scaling uncovers the switch of universality class: quantum Griffiths singularity to multiple quantum criticality at a critical thickness of tc⊥1~8nm and then from multiple quantum criticality to single criticality at tc⊥2~16nm. Moreover, the superconducting-metal transition is observed for the first time under in-plane magnetic fields and the universality class is changed at tc‖~8nm. The observation of thickness-tuned universality class under both out-of-plane and in-plane magnetic fields provides broad information for the disorder effect on superconducting-metal transitions and quantum criticality.
