Abstract:It is well known that a state of pure shear has distinct sets of basis vectors or coordinate systems: the principal axes, in which the stress is diagonal, and pure shear bases, in which diag(stress)=0. The latter is commonly taken as the definition of pure shear, although a state of pure shear is more generally defined by tr(stress)=0. New results are presented that characterize all possible pure shear bases. A pair of vector functions are derived which generate a set of pure shear basis vectors from any one member of the triad. The vector functions follow from compatibility condition for the pure shear basis vectors, and are independent of the principal stress values. The complementary types of vector basis have implications for the strain energy of linearly elastic solids with cubic material symmetry: for a given state of stress or strain, the strain energy achieves its extreme values when the material cube axes are aligned with principal axes of stress or with a pure shear basis. This implies that the optimal orientation for a given state of stress is with one or the other vector basis, depending as the stress is to be minimized or maximized, which involves the sign of one material parameter.

Numerical Study of Nearly Singular Solutions of the 3-D Incompressible Euler Equations

Abstract:In this paper, we perform a careful numerical study of nearly singular solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equations with smooth initial data. We consider the interaction of two perturbed antiparallel vortex tubes which was previously investigated by Kerr in [16, 19]. In our numerical study, we use both the pseudo-spectral method with the 2/3 dealiasing rule and the pseudo-spectral method with a high order Fourier smoothing. Moreover, we perform a careful resolution study with grid points as large as 1,536 × 1,024 × 3,072 to demonstrate the convergence of both numerical methods. Our computational results show that the maximum vorticity does not grow faster than doubly exponential in time while the velocity field remains bounded up to T = 19, beyond the singularity time T = 18.7 reported by Kerr in [16, 19]. The local geometric regularity of vortex lines near the region of maximum vorticity seems to play an important role in depleting the nonlinear vortex stretching dynamically.
Dynamic Depletion of Vortex Stretching and Non-Blowup of the 3-D Incompressible Euler Equations

Abstract:We study the interplay between the local geometric properties and the non-blowup of the 3D incompressible Euler equations. We consider the interaction of two perturbed antiparallel vortex tubes using Kerr's initial condition \cite{Kerr93}[Phys. Fluids {\bf 5} (1993), 1725]. We use a pseudo-spectral method with resolution up to $1536\times 1024 \times 3072$ to resolve the nearly singular behavior of the Euler equations. Our numerical results demonstrate that the maximum vorticity does not grow faster than double exponential in time, up to $t=19$, beyond the singularity time $t=18.7$ predicted by Kerr's computations \cite{Kerr93,Kerr04}. The velocity, the enstrophy and enstrophy production rate remain bounded throughout the computations. As the flow evolves, the vortex tubes are flattened severely and turned into thin vortex sheets, which roll up subsequently. The vortex lines near the region of the maximum vorticity are relatively straight. This local geometric regularity of vortex lines seems to be responsible for the dynamic depletion of vortex stretching.

Abstract:For the 3D compressible isentropic Euler equations with an initial perturbation of size epsilon$\varepsilon$ of a rest state, if the initial vorticity is of size delta$\delta$ with 0P_{\delta }=O(\min \lbrace e<^>\frac{1}{\varepsilon },\frac{1}{\delta }\rbrace )$ for the polytropic gases, and T delta C=O(1 delta)$T<^>C_{\delta }=O(\frac{1}{\delta })$ for the Chaplygin gases. Our result illustrates that the time of existence of smooth solutions depends crucially on the size of the vorticity of the initial data, as long as the initial data are sufficiently close to a constant state. The main ingredients in the paper are as follows: Through looking for the new good unknown instead of the velocity and introducing some suitably weighted energies, we derive the pointwise space-time decay estimates of solutions and establish the required weighted estimates on the vorticity.

Abstract:We investigate the role of convection on its large time behavior of 3D incompressible Euler equations. In [15], we constructed a new 3D model by neglecting the convection term from the reformulated axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations. This model preserves almost all the properties of the full Navier-Stokes equations, including an energy identity for smooth solutions. The numerical evidence presented in [15] seems to support that the 3D model may develop a finite time singularity. In this paper, we prove rigorously that the 3D inviscid model develops a finite time singularity for a family of smooth initial data whose energy is finite and conserved in time.

Abstract:We present a theory for the three-dimensional evolution of tubes with expandable walls conveying fluid. Our theory can accommodate arbitrary deformations of the tube, arbitrary elasticity of the walls, and both compressible and incompressible flows inside the tube. We also present the theory of propagation of shock waves in such tubes and derive the conservation laws and Rankine-Hugoniot conditions in arbitrary spatial configuration of the tubes, and compute several examples of particular solutions. The theory is derived from a variational treatment of Cosserat rod theory extended to incorporate expandable walls and moving flow inside the tube. The results presented here are useful for biological flows and industrial applications involving high speed motion of gas in flexible tubes.

Spatio-temporal Relationship between Three-Dimensional Deformations of a Collapsible Tube and the Downstream Flowfield

Abstract:The interactions between fluid flow and structural components of collapsible tubes are representative of those in several physiological systems. Although extensively studied, there exists a lack of characterization of the three-dimensionality in the structural deformations of the tube and its influence on the flow field. This experimental study investigates the spatio-temporal relationship between 3D tube geometry and the downstream flow field under conditions of fully open, closed, and slamming-type oscillating regimes. A methodology is implemented to simultaneously measure three-dimensional surface deformations in a collapsible tube and the corresponding downstream flow field. Stereophotogrammetry was used to measure tube deformations, and simultaneous flow field measurements included pressure and planar Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) data downstream of the collapsible tube. The results indicate that the location of the largest collapse in the tube occurs close to the downstream end of the tube. In the oscillating regime, sections of the tube downstream of the largest mean collapse experience the largest oscillations in the entire tube that are completely coherent and in phase. At a certain streamwise distance upstream of the largest collapse, a switch in the direction of oscillations occurs with respect to those downstream. Physically, when the tube experiences constriction downstream of the location of the largest mean collapse, this causes the accumulation of fluid and build-up of pressure in the upstream regions and an expansion of these sections. Fluctuations in the downstream flow field are significantly influenced by tube fluctuations along the minor axes. The fluctuations in the downstream flowfield are influenced by the propagation of disturbances due to oscillations in tube geometry, through the advection of fluid through the tube. Further, the manifestation of the LU-type pressure fluctuations is found to be due to the variation in the propagation speed of the disturbances during the different stages within a period of oscillation of the tube.
Long-time behavior to the 3D isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations

Abstract:We are concerned with the long-time behavior of classical solutions to the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb R^3$. Our main results and innovations can be stated as follows: Under the assumption that the density $\rho({\bf{x}}, t)$ verifies $\rho({\bf{x}},0)\geq c>0$ and $\sup_{t\geq 0}\|\rho(\cdot,t)\|_{L^\infty}\leq M$, we establish the optimal decay rates of the solutions. This greatly improves the previous result (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 234 (2019), 1167--1222), where the authors require an extra hypothesis $\sup_{t\geq 0}\|\rho(\cdot,t)\|_{C^\alpha}\leq M$ with $\alpha$ arbitrarily small. We prove that the vacuum state will persist for any time provided that the initial density contains vacuum and the far-field density is away from vacuum, which extends the torus case obtained in (SIAM J. Math. Anal. 55 (2023), 882--899) to the whole space. We derive the decay properties of the solutions with vacuum as far-field density. This in particular gives the first result concerning the $L^\infty$-decay with a rate $(1+t)^{-1}$ for the pressure to the 3D compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of vacuum. The main ingredient of the proof relies on the techniques involving blow-up criterion, a key time-independent positive upper and lower bounds of the density, and a regularity interpolation trick.

Abstract:We investigate the global in time stability of regular solutions with large velocity vectors to the evolutionary Navier-Stokes equation in ${\bf R}^3$. The class of stable flows contains all two dimensional weak solutions. The only assumption which is required is smallness of the $L_2$-norm of initial perturbation or its derivative with respect to the `$z$'-coordinate in the same norm. The magnitude of the rest of the norm of initial datum is not restricted.

Abstract:We are concerned with the inviscid limit of the Navier-Stokes equations to the Euler equations for barotropic compressible fluids in $\mathbb{R}^3$. When the viscosity coefficients obey a lower power-law of the density (i.e., $\rho^\delta$ with $0<\delta<1$), we identify a quasi-symmetric hyperbolic--singular elliptic coupled structure of the Navier-Stokes equations to control the behavior of the velocity of the fluids near the vacuum. Then this structure is employed to prove that there exists a unique regular solution to the corresponding Cauchy problem with arbitrarily large initial data and far-field vacuum, whose life span is uniformly positive in the vanishing viscosity limit. Some uniform estimates on both the local sound speed and the velocity in $H^3(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with respect to the viscosity coefficients are also obtained, which lead to the strong convergence of the regular solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations with finite mass and energy to the corresponding regular solutions of the Euler equations in $L^{\infty}([0, T]; H^{s}_{\rm loc}(\mathbb{R}^3))$ for any $s\in [2, 3)$. As a consequence, we show that, for both viscous and inviscid flows, it is impossible that the $L^\infty$ norm of any global regular solution with vacuum decays to zero asymptotically, as $t$ tends to infinity. Our framework developed here is applicable to the same problem for the other physical dimensions via some minor modifications.

Abstract:We prove that the vortex structures of solutions to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations can change their topology without any loss of regularity. More precisely, we construct smooth high-frequency solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations where vortex lines and vortex tubes of arbitrarily complicated topologies are created and destroyed in arbitrarily small times. This instance of vortex reconnection is structurally stable and in perfect agreement with the existing computer simulations and experiments. We also provide a (non-structurally stable) scenario where the destruction of vortex structures is instantaneous.

Abstract:The question of whether the 3D incompressible Euler equations can develop a finite time singularity from smooth initial data has been an outstanding open problem in fluid dynamics and mathematics. Recent studies indicate that the local geometric regularity of vortex lines can lead to dynamic depletion of vortex stretching. Guided by the local non-blowup theory, we have performed large scale computations of the 3D Euler equations on some of the most promising blowup candidates. Our results show that there is tremendous dynamic depletion of vortex stretching. The local geometric regularity of vortex lines and the anisotropic solution structure play an important role in depleting the nonlinearity dynamically and thus prevents a finite time blowup.

Abstract:We study the convergence to equilibrium for the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations on the torus T3. Under the conditions that both the density ρ and the temperature θ possess uniform in time positive lower and upper bounds, it is shown that global regular solutions converge to equilibrium with exponential rate. We improve the previous result obtained by Villani in (2009) [28] on two levels: weaker conditions on solutions and faster decay rates.
Enstrophy variations in the collapsing process of point vortices

Abstract:We investigate enstrophy variations by collapse of point vortices in an inviscid flow and, in particular, focus on the enstrophy dissipation that is a significant property characterizing 2D turbulent flows. Point vortex is an ideal vortex whose vorticity is concentrated on a point and the dynamics of point vortices on an inviscid flow is described by the point-vortex system. The point-vortex system has self-similar collapsing solutions, which are expected to cause the anomalous enstrophy dissipation, but this collapsing process of point vortices cannot be described by the 2D Euler equations. In this study, we consider point-vortex solutions of the 2D filtered Euler equations, which are a regularized model of the 2D Euler equations, and the filtered-point-vortex system describing the dynamics of them. The preceding studies have proven that there exist solutions to the three filtered-point-vortex system such that they converge to self-similar collapsing orbits of the point-vortex system and dissipate the enstrophy at the event of collapse in the zero limit of a filter scale. In this study, we numerically show that the enstrophy dissipation by the collapse of point vortices could occur for the four and five vortex problems.

Vorticity blowup in compressible Euler equations in $\mathbb{R}^d, d \geq 3$

Abstract:We prove finite-time vorticity blowup in the compressible Euler equations in $\mathbb{R}^d$ for any $d \geq 3$, starting from smooth, localized, and non-vacuous initial data. This is achieved by lifting the vorticity blowup result from [CCSV24] in $\mathbb{R}^2$ to $\mathbb{R}^d$ and utilizing the axisymmetry in $\mathbb{R}^d$. At the time of the first singularity, both vorticity blowup and implosion occur on a sphere $S^{d-2}$. Additionally, the solution exhibits a non-radial implosion, accompanied by a stable swirl velocity that is sufficiently strong to initially dominate the non-radial components and to generate the vorticity blowup.

The vorticity blowup occurs at the time of the first singularity, and is accompanied by an axisymmetric implosion in which the swirl velocity enjoys full stability, as opposed to finite co-dimension stability.

Abstract:We are concerned with the inviscid limit of the Navier-Stokes equations to the Euler equations for compressible fluids in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Motivated by the Kolmogorov hypothesis (1941) for incompressible flow, we introduce a Kolmogorov-type hypothesis for barotropic flows, in which the density and the sonic speed normally vary significantly. We then observe that the compressible Kolmogorov-type hypothesis implies the uniform boundedness of some fractional derivatives of the weighted velocity and sonic speed in the space variables in $L^2$, which is independent of the viscosity coefficient $\mu>0$. It is shown that this key observation yields the equicontinuity in both space and time of the density in $L^\gamma$ and the momentum in $L^2$, as well as the uniform bound of the density in $L^{q_1}$ and the velocity in $L^{q_2}$ independent of $\mu>0$, for some fixed $q_1 >\gamma$ and $q_2 >2$, where $\gamma>1$ is the adiabatic exponent. These results lead to the strong convergence of solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations to a solution of the Euler equations for barotropic fluids in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Not only do we offer a framework for mathematical existence theories, but also we offer a framework for the interpretation of numerical solutions through the identification of a function space in which convergence should take place, with the bounds that are independent of $\mu>0$, that is in the high Reynolds number limit.

Abstract:In this article, we construct traveling-rotating helical vortices with small cross-section to the 3D incompressible Euler equations in an infinite pipe, which tend asymptotically to singular helical vortex filament evolved by the binormal curvature flow. The construction is based on studying a general semilinear elliptic problem in divergence form \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -\varepsilon^2\text{div}(K(x)\nabla u)= (u-q|\ln\varepsilon|)^{p}_+,\ \ &x\in \Omega,\\ u=0,\ \ &x\in\partial \Omega, \end{cases} \end{equation*} for small values of $ \varepsilon. $ Helical vortex solutions concentrating near several helical filaments with polygonal symmetry are also constructed.
