Abstract:Inclusions of air bubbles or soot particles have significant effects on the single-scattering properties of ice crystals, effects that in turn have significant impacts on the radiation budget of an atmosphere containing the crystals. This study investigates some of the single-scattering effects in the case of hexagonal ice crystals, including effects on the backscattering depolarization ratio, a quantity of practical importance in the interpretation of lidar observations. One distinguishing feature of the study is an investigation of scattering properties at a visible wavelength for a crystal with size parameter (x) above 100, a size regime where one expects some agreement between exact methods and geometrical optics methods. This expectation is generally borne out in a test comparison of how the sensitivity of scattering properties to the distribution of a given volume fraction of included air is represented using (i) an approximate Monte Carlo Ray Tracing (MCRT) method and (ii) a numerically exact pseudo-spectral time-domain (PSTD) method. Another distinguishing feature of the study is a close examination, using the numerically exact Invariant-Imbedding T-Matrix (II-TM) method, of how some optical properties of importance to satellite remote sensing vary as the volume fraction of inclusions and size of crystal are varied. Although such an investigation of properties in the x>100 regime faces serious computational burdens that force a large number of idealizations and simplifications in the study, the results nevertheless provide an intriguing glimpse of what is evidently a quite complex sensitivity of optical scattering properties to inclusions of air or soot as volume fraction and size parameter are varied.
The Use of Superspheroids As Surrogates for Modeling Electromagnetic Wave Scattering by Ice Crystals

Abstract:Electromagnetic wave scattering by ice particles is commonly modeled by defining representative habits, including droxtals, columns, plates, and aggregates, although actual particles in the atmosphere can be even much more complex. In this study, we examined a superspheroidal approximation method for modeling electromagnetic wave scattering by ice crystals. Superspheroid can be associated with a shape index (SI) defined by the particle volume and average projected area. Corresponding to realistic ice crystals, suitable superspheroid models with the same SI (that means, identical volume and average projected area) and aspect ratio can be identified as surrogates for optical property calculations. We systematically compared the optical properties of ice crystals and superspheroids at 33 microwave bands in the range of 3–640 GHz and at three representative visible or infrared wavelengths (0.66, 2.13, and 11 μm). It was found that the single-scattering properties of compact ice crystal habits and their superspheroidal model particles were quite close. For an aggregate with sparse distribution of elements, a superspheroid model produces relatively large errors because the aspect ratio may not be sufficient to describe a particle shape. However, the optical similarity of a superspheroid and an aggregate is still encouraging.
Ephemeral ice-like local environments in classical rigid models of liquid water

Abstract:The Journal of Chemical Physics, Volume 156, Issue 21, June 2022. Despite great efforts over the past 50 years, the simulation of water still presents significant challenges and open questions. At room temperature and pressure, the collective molecular interactions and dynamics of water molecules may form local structural arrangements that are non-trivial to classify. Here, we employ a data-driven approach built on Smooth Overlap of Atomic Position (SOAP) that allows us to compare and classify how widely used classical models represent liquid water. Macroscopically, the obtained results are rationalized based on water thermodynamic observables. Microscopically, we directly observe how transient ice-like ordered environments may dynamically/statistically form in liquid water, even above freezing temperature, by comparing the SOAP spectra for different ice structures with those of the simulated liquid systems. This confirms recent ab initio-based calculations but also reveals how the emergence of ephemeral local ice-like environments in liquid water at room conditions can be captured by classical water models.

Abstract:The past decade or so has witnessed a large number of articles about water structure. The most incisive experiments involve radiation with a wavelength compatible with the observed inter-molecular separations found in water, of order $\sim 3$\AA, in other words mostly $<$1eV neutrons and $>$10keV x-rays. Because x-rays are scattered by electrons while neutrons are scattered by nuclei, the two probes give complementary information about the three site-site radial distribution functions for water, namely O-O, O-H and H-H. Here a version of Monte Carlo simulation called Empirical Potential Structure Refinement is used to devise an empirical intermolecular potential which attempts to drive the simulated radial distribution functions as close as possible to the data. New x-ray and neutron scattering data on water in the temperature range 280 - 365K are presented for the first time, alongside a new analysis of some much older neutron data on ice 1h at 220K. This temperature analysis, above and below the water freezing point of water, reveals some non-intuitive water properties in the liquid and solid states.
Structural transitions in amorphous water ice and astrophysical implications

Abstract:Selected area electron diffraction is used to monitor structural changes of vapor-deposited water ice in vacuum during warm-up from 15 to 188 K. A progression of three amorphous forms of water ice is found with well-defined transitions. The formation of a high-density amorphous form (Iah) at 15 K is confirmed, and the transition to the more familiar low-density form (Ial) occurs gradually over the range 38 to 68 K. At 131 K, the ice transforms into a third amorphous form (Iar), which precedes the crystallization of cubic ice (Ic) and coexists metastably with Ic from 148 K until at least 188 K. These structural transformations of amorphous water ice can be used to explain hitherto anomalous properties of astrophysical ices. The structural transition from Iah to Ial is responsible for the diffusion and recombination of radicals in ultraviolet-photolyzed interstellar ices at low temperatures. The occurrence and persistence of Iar explains anomalous gas retention and gas release from water-rich ices at temperatures above 150 K.
Unveiling the Surface Structure of Amorphous Solid Water via Selective Infrared Irradiation of OH Stretching Modes

Abstract:In the quest to understand the formation of the building blocks of life, amorphous solid water (ASW) is one of the most widely studied molecular systems. Indeed, ASW is ubiquitous in the cold interstellar medium (ISM), where ASW-coated dust grains provide a catalytic surface for solid phase chemistry, and is believed to be present in the Earth's atmosphere at high altitudes. It has been shown that the ice surface adsorbs small molecules such as CO, N$_2$, or CH$_4$, most likely at OH groups dangling from the surface. Our study presents completely new insights concerning the behaviour of ASW upon selective infrared (IR) irradiation of its dangling modes. When irradiated, these surface H$_2$O molecules reorganise, predominantly forming a stabilised monomer-like water mode on the ice surface. We show that we systematically provoke "hole-burning" effects (or net loss of oscillators) at the wavelength of irradiation and reproduce the same absorbed water monomer on the ASW surface. Our study suggests that all dangling modes share one common channel of vibrational relaxation; the ice remains amorphous but with a reduced range of binding sites, and thus an altered catalytic capacity.

Abstract:Water (H2O) ice is ubiquitous component of the universe, having been detected in a variety of interstellar and Solar System environments where radiation plays an important role in its physico-chemical transformations. Although the radiation chemistry of H2O astrophysical ice analogues has been well studied, direct and systematic comparisons of different solid phases are scarce and are typically limited to just two phases. In this article, we describe the results of an in-depth study of the 2 keV electron irradiation of amorphous solid water (ASW), restrained amorphous ice (RAI) and the cubic (Ic) and hexagonal (Ih) crystalline phases at 20 K so as to further uncover any potential dependence of the radiation physics and chemistry on the solid phase of the ice. Mid-infrared spectroscopic analysis of the four investigated H2O ice phases revealed that electron irradiation of the RAI, Ic, and Ih phases resulted in their amorphization (with the latter undergoing the process more slowly) while ASW underwent compaction. The abundance of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) produced as a result of the irradiation was also found to vary between phases, with yields being highest in irradiated ASW. This observation is the cumulative result of several factors including the increased porosity and quantity of lattice defects in ASW, as well as its less extensive hydrogen-bonding network. Our results have astrophysical implications, particularly with regards to H2O-rich icy interstellar and Solar System bodies exposed to both radiation fields and temperature gradients.

Abstract:The x-ray absorption spectra of water and ice are calculated with a many-body approach for electron-hole excitations. The experimental features, including the effects of temperature change in the liquid, are reproduced from configurations generated by ab initio molecular dynamics. The spectral difference between the solid and the liquid is due to two major short-range order effects. One, due to breaking of hydrogen bonds, enhances the pre-edge intensity in the liquid. The other, due to a nonbonded molecular fraction in the first coordination shell, affects the main spectral edge in the conversion of ice to water. This effect may not involve hydrogen bond breaking as shown by experiment in high-density amorphous ice.

Abstract:Ice is a major component of astrophysical environment - from interstellar molecular clouds through protoplanetary disks to evolved solar systems. Ice and complex organic matter coexist in these environments as well, and it is thought primordial ice brought the molecules of life to Earth four billion years ago, which could have kickstarted the origin of life on Earth. To understand the journey of ice and organics from their origins to becoming a part of evolved planetary systems, it is important to complement high spatial and spectral resolution telescopes such as JWST with laboratory experimental studies that provide deeper insight into the processes that occur in these astrophysical environments. Our laboratory studies are aimed at providing this knowledge. In this article we present simultaneous mass spectrometric and infrared spectroscopic investigation on how molecular ice mixtures behave at different temperatures and how this information is critical to interpret observational data from protoplanetary disks as well as comets. We find that amorphous to crystalline water ice transformation is the most critical phenomenon that differentiates between outgassing of trapped volatiles such as CO2 vs. outgassing of pure molecular ice domains of the same in a mixed molecular ice. Crystalline water ice is found to trap only a small fraction of other volatiles (<5%), indicating ice grain composition in astrophysical and planetary environments must be different depending on whether the ice is in amorphous phase or transformed into crystalline phase, even if the crystalline ice undergoes radiation-induced amorphization subsequently. Crystallization of water ice is a key differentiator for many ices in astronomical environments as well as in our Solar System.

Dissecting the Molecular Structure of the Air/Ice Interface from Quantum Simulations of the Sum-Frequency Generation Spectrum

Abstract:Ice interfaces are pivotal in mediating key chemical and physical processes, such as heterogeneous chemical reactions in the environment, ice nucleation, and cloud micro- physics. At the ice surface, water molecules form a quasi-liquid layer (QLL) with distinct properties from the bulk. Despite numerous experimental and theoretical studies, the molecular-level understanding of this layer has remained elusive. In this work, we use state-of-the-art quantum dynamics simulations with a realistic data-driven many- body potential to dissect the vibrational sum-frequency generation (vSFG) spectrum in terms of contributions arising from individual molecular layers, orientations, and hydrogen-bonding topologies that determine the QLL properties. The agreement be- tween experimental and simulated spectra provides a realistic view of the evolution of the QLL as a function of temperature without the need for empirical adjustments. At lower temperatures, the emergence of specific features in the vSFG spectrum points to surface restructuring, resulting in mixed ice Ih and ice Ic nanodomains at the surface, which may vary depending on how the air/ice interface is prepared. This work not only underscores the critical role of many-body interactions and nuclear quantum effects in understanding ice surfaces but also provides a definitive molecular-level picture of the QLL, which plays a central role in multiphase and heterogeneous processes of relevance to a range of fields, including atmospheric chemistry, cryopreservation, and materials science.

IRFEL Selective Irradiation of Amorphous Solid Water: from Dangling to Bulk Modes

Abstract:Amorphous solid water (ASW) is one of the most widely studied solid phase systems. A better understanding of the nature of inter- and intramolecular forces in ASW is, however, still required to correctly interpret the catalytic role of ASW in the formation and preservation of molecular species in environments such as the icy surfaces of Solar System objects, on interstellar icy dust grains and potentially even in the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere. In this work, we have systematically exposed porous ASW (pASW) to mid-infrared radiation generated by a free-electron laser at the HFML-FELIX facility in the Netherlands to study the effect of vibrational energy injection into the surface and bulk modes of pASW. During multiple sequential irradiations on the same ice spot, we observed selective effects both at the surface and in the bulk of the ice. Although the density of states in pASW should allow for a fast vibrational relaxation through the H-bonded network, part of the injected energy is converted into structural ice changes as illustrated by the observation of spectral modifications when performing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in reflection-absorption mode. Future studies will include the quantification of such effects by systematically investigating ice thickness, ice morphology, and ice composition.

Comparative Electron Irradiations of Amorphous and Crystalline Astrophysical Ice Analogues

Abstract:Laboratory studies of the radiation chemistry occurring in astrophysical ices have demonstrated the dependence of this chemistry on a number of experimental parameters. One experimental parameter which has received significantly less attention is that of the phase of the solid ice under investigation. In this present study, we have performed systematic 2 keV electron irradiations of the amorphous and crystalline phases of pure CH3OH and N2O astrophysical ice analogues. Radiation-induced decay of these ices and the concomitant formation of products were monitored in situ using FT-IR spectroscopy. A direct comparison between the irradiated amorphous and crystalline CH3OH ices revealed a more rapid decay of the former compared to the latter. Interestingly, a significantly lesser difference was observed when comparing the decay rates of the amorphous and crystalline N2O ices. These observations have been rationalised in terms of the strength and extent of the intermolecular forces present in each ice. The strong and extensive hydrogen-bonding network that exists in crystalline CH3OH (but not in the amorphous phase) is suggested to significantly stabilise this phase against radiation-induced decay. Conversely, although alignment of the dipole moment of N2O is anticipated to be more extensive in the crystalline structure, its weak attractive potential does not significantly stabilise the crystalline phase against radiation-induced decay, hence explaining the smaller difference in decay rates between the amorphous and crystalline phases of N2O compared to those of CH3OH. Our results are relevant to the astrochemistry of interstellar ices and icy Solar System objects, which may experience phase changes due to thermally-induced crystallisation or space radiation-induced amorphisation.

Abstract:Irradiation by energetic ions, electrons, and UV photons induces sputtering and chemical processes (radiolysis) in the surfaces of icy moons, comets, and icy grains. Laboratory experiments, both of ideal surfaces and of more complex and realistic analog samples, are crucial to understand the interaction of surfaces of icy moons and comets with their space environment. This study shows the first results of mass spectrometry measurements from porous water ice regolith samples irradiated with electrons as a representative analogy to water-ice rich surfaces in the solar system. Previous studies have shown that most electron-induced H2O radiolysis products leave the ice as H2 and O2 and that O2 can be trapped under certain conditions in the irradiated ice. Our new laboratory experiments confirm these findings. Moreover, they quantify residence times and saturation levels of O2 in originally pure water ice. H2O may also be released from the water ice by irradiation, but the quantification of the released H2O is more difficult and the total amount is sensitive to the electron flux and energy.

Molecular-Resolution Imaging of Ice Crystallized from Liquid Water

Abstract:Despite the ubiquity of ice, a molecular-resolution image of ice crystallized from liquid water or the resulting defect structure has never been obtained. Here, we report the stabilization and angstrom-resolution electron imaging of ice Ih crystallized from liquid water. We combine lattice mapping with molecular dynamics simulations to reveal that ice formation is highly tolerant to nanoscale defects such as misoriented subdomains and trapped gas bubbles, which are stabilized by molecular-scale structural motifs. Importantly, bubble surfaces adopt low-energy nanofacets and create negligible strain fields in the surrounding crystal. These bubbles can dynamically nucleate, grow, migrate, dissolve, and coalesce under electron irradiation and be monitored in situ near a steady state. This work opens the door to understanding water crystallization behaviors at an unprecedented spatial resolution.

Electron Diffraction of Water in No Man's Land

Abstract:A generally accepted understanding of the anomalous properties of water will only emerge if it becomes possible to systematically characterize water in the deeply supercooled regime, from where the anomalies appear to emanate. This has largely remained elusive because water crystallizes rapidly between 160 K and 232 K. Here, we present an experimental approach to rapidly prepare deeply supercooled water at a well-defined temperature and probe it with electron diffraction before crystallization occurs. We show that as water is cooled from room temperature to cryogenic temperature, its structure evolves smoothly, approaching that of amorphous ice just below 200 K. Our experiments narrow down the range of possible explanations of the origin for the water anomalies and open up new avenues for studying supercooled water.

Abstract:Interstellar and cometary ices play an important role in the formation of planetary systems around young stars. Their main constituent is amorphous solid water (ASW). Although ASW is widely studied, vibrational energy dissipation and structural changes due to vibrational excitation are less well understood. The hydrogen-bonding network is likely a crucial component in this. Here we present experimental results on hydrogen-bonding changes in ASW induced by the intense, nearly monochromatic mid-IR free-electron laser (FEL) radiation of the FELIX-2 beamline at the HFML-FELIX facility at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Structural changes in ASW are monitored by reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy and depend on the irradiation history of the ice. The experiments show that FEL irradiation can induce changes in the local neighborhood of the excited molecules due to energy transfer. Molecular Dynamics simulations confirm this picture: vibrationally excited molecules can reorient for a more optimal tetrahedral surrounding without breaking existing hydrogen bonds. The vibrational energy can transfer through the hydrogen-bonding network to water molecules that have the same vibrational frequency. We hence expect a reduced energy dissipation in amorphous material with respect to crystalline material due to the inhomogeneity in vibrational frequencies as well as the presence of specific hydrogen-bonding defect sites which can also hamper the energy transfer.

Abstract:Understanding the role of inelastic electron scattering in water is of fundamental importance in various fields ranging from atmospheric chemistry to radiation biology. The lack of accurate excitation cross sections for water results in a large uncertainty, for example, in the track structure simulation for modeling radiation damage to DNA. The large differences of the integral cross sections (ICSs) for the optical-allowed excitations (A) over tilde B-1(1) and (B) over tilde (1)A(1) of H2O among experiments and theories have been maintaining for decades. To resolve this issue, by combining the ab initio calculation with the electron correlation being taken into account accurately, we compare the ICSs determined by high-energy electron scattering with the existing experiments at low and intermediate energies and theories, where the present experiment eliminated the errors from the spectral deconvolution in low-energy measurements. Our work provides a recommendation for the ICSs of the two excitations from thresholds up to several keV, and suggests the existing selected ICSs for H2O be revised for accurate modeling radiation effects in biological matter and describing the transport properties of electrons in aqueous systems.

Abstract:Water is a ubiquitous liquid with unique physico-chemical properties, whose nature has shaped our planet and life as we know it. Water in restricted geometries has different properties than in bulk. Confinement can prevent low-temperature crystallization into a hexagonal structure, thus creating a state of amorphous water. In this work we introduce a family of synthetic lipids with designed cyclopropyl modification in the hydrophobic chains that exhibit unique liquid-crystalline behaviour at low temperature, enabling maintenance of amorphous water down to 10 K due to nanoconfinement in a bio-mimetic milieu. Small and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering, Elastic and Inelastic Neutron Scattering, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Differential Scanning Calorimetry, complemented by Molecular Dynamics Simulations, unveil a complex lipid/water phase diagram, in which bicontinuous cubic and lamellar liquid crystalline phases containing sub-zero liquid, glassy, or ice water emerge as a competition between the two components, each pushing towards its thermodynamically favoured state.

Abstract:Electron scattering on liquid samples has been enabled recently by the development of ultrathin liquid sheet technologies. The data treatment of liquid-phase electron scattering has been mostly reliant on methodologies developed for gas electron diffraction, in which theoretical inputs and empirical fittings are often needed to account for the atomic form factor and remove the inelastic scattering background. In this work, we present an alternative data treatment method that is able to retrieve the radial distribution of all the charged particle pairs without the need of either theoretical inputs or empirical fittings. The merits of this new method are illustrated through the retrieval of real-space molecular structure from experimental electron scattering patterns of liquid water, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, and dichloromethane.
