Abstract:We present a simple criterion for when an N=2 SCFT must be a product SCFT. Applied to the class-S theories of type $E_7$, we find 29 (out of 11,000) 3-punctured spheres which are product SCFTs.

Abstract:We develop a technique for counting the number of stress tensor multiplets in a 4D = 2 SCFT. This provides a simple diagnostic for when an isolated (non-Lagrangian) SCFT is a product of two (or more) such theories. In class-S, the basic building blocks are the isolated SCFTs arising from the compactification of a 6D (2,0) theory on a 3-punctured sphere ("fixture"). We apply our technique to determine when a fixture is a product SCFT. The answer is that this phenomenon is surprisingly rare. In the low-rank A N− 1 , D N theories and the E 6 theory studied by the first author and his collaborators, it occurs less than 1% of the time. Of the 2979 fixtures in the (untwisted and twisted) E 6 theory, only 23 are product SCFTs. Of these, 22 were known to the original authors. The new one is a product of the ( E 7) 8 Minahan-Nemeschansky theory and a new rank-2 SCFT.

Abstract:A bstract We classify the class S theories of type E 7 . These are four-dimensional $$ \mathcal{N}=2 $$ N = 2 superconformal field theories arising from the compactification of the E 7 (2, 0) theory on a punctured Riemann surface, C . The classification is given by listing all 3-punctured spheres (“fixtures”), and connecting cylinders, which can arise in a pants-decomposition of C . We find exactly 11,000 fixtures with three regular punctures, and an additional 48 with one “irregular puncture” (in the sense used in our previous works). To organize this large number of theories, we have created a web application at https://golem.ph.utexas.edu/class-S/E7/ . Among these theories, we find 10 new ones with a simple exceptional global symmetry group, as well as a new rank-2 SCFT and several new rank-3 SCFTs. As an application, we study the strong-coupling limit of the E 7 gauge theory with 3 hypermultiplets in the 56. Using our results, we also verify recent conjectures that the T 2 compactification of certain 6 d (1, 0) theories can alternatively be realized in class S as fixtures in the E 7 or E 8 theories.

Abstract:Compactifying the 6-dimensional (2,0) superconformal field theory, of type ADE, on a Riemann surface, $C$, with codimension-2 defect operators at points on $C$, yields a 4-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theory. An outstanding problem is to classify the 4D theories one obtains, in this way, and to understand their properties. In this paper, we turn our attention to the $E_6$ (2,0) theory, which (unlike the A- and D-series) has no realization in terms of M5-branes. Classifying the 4D theories amounts to classifying all of the 3-punctured spheres ("fixtures"), and the cylinders that connect them, that can occur in a pants-decomposition of $C$. We find 904 fixtures: 19 corresponding to free hypermultiplets, 825 corresponding to isolated interacting SCFTs (with no known Lagrangian description) and 60 "mixed fixtures", corresponding to a combination of free hypermultiplets and an interacting SCFT. Of the 825 interacting fixtures, we list only the 139 "interesting" ones. As an application, we study the strong coupling limits of the Lagrangian field theories: $E_6$ with 4 hypermultiplets in the $27$ and $F_4$ with 3 hypermultiplets in the $26$.
On Low Rank 4d $\mathcal{n}=2$ SCFTs

Abstract:There are two major ways of constructing 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs): the first one is putting a 6d $(2,0)$ theory on a punctured Riemann surface (class-S theory), and the second one is putting type IIB string theory on a 3d canonical singularity. As there are interests on low rank theories, we search all the possibilities from above two constructions. Most of those theories are engineered by class-S theory with irregular singularities, and we find a universal formula for the rank of theory so that a complete search is possible. We then compute various physical quantities of those theories, such as the central charges, flavor symmetry, associated vertex operator algebra and Higgs branch, etc. One of interesting consequence of our results are the prediction of many new isomorphism of 2d vertex operator algebra.
Sequences of $6d$ SCFTs on generic Riemann surfaces

Abstract:We consider compactifications of $6d$ minimal $(D_{N+3},D_{N+3})$ type conformal matter SCFTs on a generic Riemann surface. We derive the theories corresponding to three punctured spheres (trinions) with three maximal punctures, from which one can construct models corresponding to generic surfaces. The trinion models are simple quiver theories with $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(2)$ gauge nodes. One of the three puncture non abelian symmetries is emergent in the IR. The derivation of the trinions proceeds by analyzing RG flows between conformal matter SCFTs with different values of $N$ and relations between their subsequent reductions to $4d$. In particular, using the flows we first derive trinions with two maximal and one minimal punctures, and then we argue that collections of $N$ minimal punctures can be interpreted as a maximal one. This suggestion is checked by matching the properties of the $4d$ models such as `t Hooft anomalies, symmetries, and the structure of the conformal manifold to the expectations from $6d$. We then use the understanding that collections of minimal punctures might be equivalent to maximal ones to construct trinions with three maximal punctures, and then $4d$ theories corresponding to arbitrary surfaces, for $6d$ models described by two $M5$ branes probing a $\mathbb{Z}_k$ singularity. This entails the introduction of a novel type of maximal puncture. Again, the suggestion is checked by matching anomalies, symmetries and the conformal manifold to expectations from six dimensions. These constructions thus give us a detailed understanding of compactifications of two sequences of six dimensional SCFTs to four dimensions.

Abstract:Detailed studies of four dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories (SCFT) defined by isolated complete intersection singularities are performed: we compute the Coulomb branch spectrum, Seiberg-Witten solutions and central charges. Most of our theories have exactly marginal deformations and we identify the weakly coupled gauge theory descriptions for many of them, which involve (affine) D and E shaped quiver gauge theories and theories formed from Argyres-Douglas matters. These investigations provide strong evidence for the singularity approach in classifying 4d N=2 SCFTs.
Exceptional S-fold SCFTs are almost trivial

Abstract:We study 4d exceptional S-fold SCFTs obtained from the 6d $(2,0)$ theories of type $E_{6,7,8}$. We show that all but one of these theories are discrete gaugings of free theories because they do not admit a consistent charge lattice. We compute the 1-form symmetry of the only interacting theory, the $k=4$ exceptional S-fold SCFT of type $E_8$, and find that it is trivial. Along the way we develop a consistency condition for the Coulomb Branch stratification of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs with characteristic dimension $\varkappa \neq \{1,2\}$ and show that the triviality of (most) exceptional S-fold SCFTs follows directly from this constraint.

N=1 SCFTs from F-theory on Orbifolds

Abstract:We study four-dimensional superconformal field theories living on the worldvolume of $D3$ branes probing minimally-supersymmetric F-theory backgrounds, focusing on the case of orbi-orientifold setups with and without 7-branes. We observe that these theories are closely related to compactifications of six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ theories on a torus with flux, where the flux quanta is mapped in Type IIB to the defining data of the orbifold group. We analyze the cases of class $\mathcal{S}_k$ theories as well as of compactifications of the E-string and of orbi-instanton theories. We also classify $\mathcal{S}$-fold configurations in F-theory preserving minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions and their mass deformations.

Hyperelliptic families and 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT

Abstract:We classify four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs whose Seiberg-Witten (SW) geometries can be written as hyperelliptic families. By using special Kähler condition of SW geometry, we reduce the problem to one parameter quasi-homogeneous hyperelliptic families $y^2=f(x,t)$. The classification is given by further demanding that the complex algebraic surface defined by $y^2=f(x,t)$ has an isolated singularity. We then write down the full SW geometry by looking at mini-versal deformations of the one parameter family, and the SW differential is also written down. The detailed physical data for these theories are found by matching the theory with other known construction. Our solutions recover the known rank one and rank two results, and give some infinite sequences valid at arbitrary ranks. We also studied $Z_2$ quotient of above hyperelliptic families which give rise to $B$ type and $D$ type conformal gauge theory, and further generalizations.

Abstract:Many six-dimensional (1, 0) superconformal field theories (SCFTs) are known to fall into families labeled by nilpotent orbits of certain simple Lie algebras. For each of the three infinite series of such families, we show that the anomalies for the continuous zero-form global symmetries of a theory labelled by a nilpotent orbit O of g can be determined from the anomalies of the theory associated to the trivial nilpotent orbit (the parent theory), together with the data of O . In particular, knowledge of the tensor branch field theory is bypassed completely. We show that the known anomalies, previously determined from the geometric/atomic construction, are reproduced by analyzing the Nambu-Goldstone modes inside of the moment map associated to the g flavor symmetry of the parent SCFT. This provides further evidence for the physics underlying the labeling of the SCFTs by nilpotent orbits. The Bestiary of 6d (1,0) SCFTs: Nilpotent Orbits and Anomalies

Abstract:Many six-dimensional $(1,0)$ SCFTs are known to fall into families labelled by nilpotent orbits of certain simple Lie algebras. Abstract:We show that the $4d$ ${\cal N}=1$ $SU(3)$ $N_f=6$ SQCD is the model obtained when compactifying the rank one E-string theory on a three punctured sphere (a trinion) with a particular value of flux. The $SU(6)\times SU(6)\times U(1)$ global symmetry of the theory, when decomposed into the $SU(2)^3\times U(1)^3\times SU(6)$ subgroup, corresponds to the three $SU(2)$ symmetries associated to the three punctures and the $U(1)^3 \times SU(6)$ subgroup of the $E_8$ symmetry of the E-string theory. All the puncture symmetries are manifest in the UV and thus we can construct ordinary Lagrangians flowing in the IR to any compactification of the E-string theory. We generalize this claim and argue that the ${\cal N}=1$ $SU(N+2)$ SQCD in the middle of the conformal window, $N_f=2N+4$, is the theory obtained by compactifying the $6d$ minimal $(D_{N+3},D_{N+3})$ conformal matter SCFT on a sphere with two maximal $SU(N+1)$ punctures, one minimal $SU(2)$ puncture, and with a particular value of flux. The $SU(2N+4)\times SU(2N+4)\times U(1)$ symmetry of the UV Lagrangian decomposes into $SU(N+1)^2\times SU(2)$ puncture symmetries and the $U(1)^3\times SU(2N+4)$ subgroup of the $SO(12+4N)$ symmetry group of the $6d$ SCFT. The models constructed from the trinions exhibit a variety of interesting strong coupling effects. For example, one of the dualities arising geometrically from different pair-of-pants decompositions of a four punctured sphere is an $SU(N+2)$ generalization of the Intriligator-Pouliot duality of $SU(2)$ SQCD with $N_f=4$, which is a degenerate, $N=0$, instance of our discussion.

Abstract:We study $4D$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories that arise as the compactification of the six-dimensional $(2,0)$ theory of type $E_6$ on a punctured Riemann surface in the presence of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ outer-automorphism twists. We explicitly carry out the classification of these theories in terms of three-punctured spheres and cylinders, and provide tables of properties of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-twisted punctures. An expression is given for the superconformal index of a fixture with twisted punctures of type $E_6$, which we use to check our identifications. Several of our fixtures have Higgs branches which are isomorphic to instanton moduli spaces, and we find that S-dualities involving these fixtures imply interesting isomorphisms between hyperK\"ahler quotients of these spaces. Additionally, we find families of fixtures for which the Sommers-Achar group, which was previously a Coulomb branch concept, acts non-trivially on the Higgs branch operators.
On Twisted $A_{2n}$ Class-S Theories

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the twisted $A_{2n}$ sector of class-S theories. Heretofore, the Coulomb branches of such theories have been poorly understood. In this, and a companion paper, we make progress in our understanding of them. In particular, we find a formula for the dimension of the Coulomb branch of any twisted $A_{2n}$ class-S theory. Deferring a systematic analysis to the companion paper, we here determine many contributions of punctures to the graded Coulomb branch dimensions, and in some low rank cases, all of them. We are then able to identify a variety of known 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs with twisted $A_{2n}$ theories, and reproduce many of their known properties, such as S-duality amongst certain Argyres-Douglas theories.

The Stranger Things of Symmetric Product Orbifold CFTs

Abstract:Symmetric product orbifold theories are valuable due to their universal features at large $N$. Here we will demonstrate that they have features that are not as pervasive: we provide evidence of strange behaviour under deformations within their moduli space. To this end, we consider the symmetric product orbifold of tensor products of $\mathcal{N}=2$ super-Virasoro minimal models, and classify them according to two criteria. The first criterion is the existence of a single-trace twisted exactly marginal operator that triggers the deformation. The second criterion is a sparseness condition on the growth of light states in the elliptic genera. In this context we encounter a strange variety: theories that obey the first criterion but the second criterion falls into a Hagedorn-like growth. We explain why this may be counter-intuitive and discuss how it might be accounted for in conformal perturbation theory. We also find a new infinite class of theories that obey both criteria, which are necessary conditions for each moduli space to contain a supergravity point.

4d N=2 SCFT and singularity theory Part I: Classification

Abstract: This is the first of a series of papers in which we systematically use singularity theory to study four dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories. Our main focus in this paper is to identify what kind of singularity is needed to define a SCFT. The constraint for a hypersurface singularity has been found by Sharpere and Vafa, and here the complete set of solutions are listed using a related mathematical result of Stephen S. T. Yau and Yu. We also study other type of singularities such as the complete intersection, quotient of hypersurface singularity by a finite group and non-isolated singularity. We finally conjecture that any three dimensional rational Gorenstein graded isolated singularity should define a N=2 SCFT. We explain how to extract various interesting physical quantities such as Seiberg-Witten geometry, central charges, exact marginal deformations, BPS quiver, RG flow trajectory, etc from the properties of singularity.
A 5d perspective on the compactifications of 6d SCFTs to 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs

Abstract:Compactifying 6d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) to 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories on two-punctured spheres (tubes) and tori with flux is realized using duality domain walls in 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ Kaluza-Klein (KK) theories, which are usually denoted by $flux$ $domain$ $walls$. We revisit this construction and study it in detail from the 5d perspective, specifically rephrasing it using the box graph description of the extended Coulomb branch phases of 5d theories. This perspective could be helpful in understanding how to equivalently realize the 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ models from geometric engineering in M-theory. Along the way, we show how to recover various properties of the 4d theories from the 5d perspective, such as the flux associated to the domain wall configurations and the presence of a $\mathfrak{u}(1)$ global symmetry in the 4d theory descending from the KK symmetry on the tube, which is broken to a discrete subgroup on a flux torus. We demonstrate all of these ideas using the rank 1 E-string theory.

E-string spectrum and typical F-theory geometry

Abstract: In recent scans of 4D F-theory geometric models, it was shown that a dominant majority of the base geometries only support SU(2), $G_2$, $F_4$ and $E_8$ gauge groups. Moreover, most of these gauge groups are shown to couple to strongly coupled "conformal matter" sectors. For example, the $E_8$ gauge group can couple to the compactification of 6D E-string theory on a complex curve. In this paper, we initiate the investigation of these strongly coupled sectors by studying the spectrum of 6D E-string theory. We construct a resolved elliptic Calabi-Yau threefold of a non-minimal Weierstrass model, which contains a non-flat fiber with the topology of generalized del Pezzo surface. The spectrum of E-string theory then arises from M2 brane wrapping modes on various 2-cycles on the non-flat fiber. Finally, we discuss the compactification of these fields to 4D.
