Abstract:We consider dynamics of compositions of stationary random C-2 diffeomorphisms. We will prove that the sample measures of an ergodic hyperbolic invariant measure of the system are exact dimensional. This is an extension to random diffeomorphisms of the main result of Barreira, Pesin and Schmeling (1999), which proves the Eckmann-Ruelle dimension conjecture for a deterministic diffeomorphism.

Abstract:We extend a result of Ledrappier, Hochman, and Solomyak on exact dimensionality of stationary measures for $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ to disintegrations of stationary measures for $\text{GL}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ onto the one dimensional foliations of the space of flags obtained by forgetting a single subspace. The dimensions of these conditional measures are expressed in terms of the gap between consecutive Lyapunov exponents, and a certain entropy associated to the group action on the one dimensional foliation they are defined on. It is shown that the entropies thus defined are also related to simplicity of the Lyapunov spectrum for the given measure on $\text{GL}(\mathbb{R}^d)$.

On the dimension of stationary measures for random piecewise affine interval homeomorphisms

Abstract:We study stationary measures for iterated function systems (considered as random dynamical systems) consisting of two piecewise affine interval homeomorphisms, called Alsedà--Misiurewicz (AM) systems. We prove that for an open set of parameters, the unique non-atomic stationary measure for an AM-system has Hausdorff dimension strictly smaller than $1$. In particular, we obtain singularity of these measures, answering partially a question of Alsedà and Misiurewicz from 2014.

Generic dimensional and dynamical properties of invariant measures of full-shift systems over countable alphabets

Abstract:In this work, we are interested in characterizing typical (generic) dimensional properties of invariant measures associated with the full-shift system, $T$, in a product space whose alphabet is a countable set. More specifically, we show that the set of invariant measures with infinite packing dimension equal to infinity is a dense $G_\delta$ subset of $\mathcal{M}(T)$, the space of $T$-invariant measures endowed with the weak topology, where the alphabet $M$ is a countable Polish metric space. We also show that the set of invariant measures with upper $q$-generalized fractal dimension (with $q>1$) equal to infinity is a dense $G_\delta$ subset of $\mathcal{M}(T)$, where the alphabet $M$ is a countable compact metric space. This improves the results obtained by Carvalho and Condori in \cite{AS} and \cite{AS2}, respectively. Furthermore, we discuss the dynamical consequences of such results, regarding the upper recurrence rates and upper quantitative waiting time indicator for typical orbits, and how the fractal dimensions of invariant measures and such dynamical quantities behave under an $\alpha$-Hölder conjugation.

Stable laws for random dynamical systems

Abstract:In this paper we consider random dynamical systems formed by concatenating maps acting on the unit interval $[0,1]$ in an iid fashion. Considered as a stationary Markov process, the random dynamical system possesses a unique stationary measure $\nu$. We consider a class of non square-integrable observables $\phi$, mostly of form $\phi(x)=d(x,x_0)^{-\frac{1}{\alpha}}$ where $x_0$ is non-periodic point satisfying some other genericity conditions, and more generally regularly varying observables with index $\alpha \in (0,2)$. The two types of maps we concatenate are a class of piecewise $C^2$ expanding maps, and a class of intermittent maps possessing an indifferent fixed point at the origin. Under conditions on the dynamics and $\alpha$ we establish Poisson limit laws, convergence of scaled Birkhoff sums to a stable limit law and functional stable limit laws, in both the annealed and quenched case. The scaling constants for the limit laws for almost every quenched realization are the same as those of the annealed case and determined by $\nu$. This is in contrast to the scalings in quenched central limit theorems where the centering constants depend in a critical way upon the realization and are not the same for almost every realization.

Abstract:We consider the symmetric simple exclusion process on Z^d, for d>= 5, and study the regularity of the quasi-stationary measures of the dynamics conditionned on not occupying the origin. For each \rho\in ]0,1[, we establish uniqueness of the density of quasi-stationary measures in L^2(d\nur), where \nur is the stationary measure of density \rho. This, in turn, permits us to obtain sharp estimates for P_{\nur}(\tau>t), where \tau is the first time the origin is occupied.

Abstract:Let be a diffeomorphism on an -dimensional compact smooth Riemannian manifold M and a hyperbolic ergodic f-invariant probability measure. This paper obtains an upper bound for the stable (unstable) pointwise dimension of , which is given by the unique solution of an equation involving the sub-additive measure-theoretic pressure. If is a Sinai–Ruelle–Bowen (SRB) measure, then the Kaplan–Yorke conjecture is true under some additional conditions and the Lyapunov dimension of can be approximated gradually by the Hausdorff dimension of a sequence of hyperbolic sets . The limit behaviour of the Carathéodory singular dimension of on the unstable manifold with respect to the super-additive singular valued potential is also studied.

Abstract:For random compositions of independent and identically distributed measurable maps on a Polish space, we study the existence and finitude of absolutely continuous ergodic stationary probability measures (which are, in particular, physical measures) whose basins of attraction cover the whole space almost everywhere. We characterize and hierarchize such random maps in terms of their associated Markov operators, as well as show the difference between classes in the hierarchy by plenty of examples, including additive noise, multiplicative noise, and iterated function systems. We also provide sufficient practical conditions for a random map to belong to these classes. For instance, we establish that any continuous random map on a compact Riemannian manifold with absolutely continuous transition probability has finitely many physical measures whose basins of attraction cover Lebesgue almost all the manifold.

Abstract:Any Borel probability measure supported on a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure on the real line possesses a discrete inverse measure. We study the validity of the multifractal formalism for the inverse measures of random weak Gibbs measures supported on the attractor associated with some $C^1$ random dynamics encoded by a random subshift of finite type, and expanding in the mean. The study requires, in particular, to develop in this context of random dynamics a suitable extension of the results known for heterogeneous ubiquity associated with deterministic Gibbs measures.

Abstract:In this work we consider a finite dimensional approximation for the 2D Euler equations on the sphere, proposed by V. Zeitlin, and show their convergence towards a solution to Euler equations with marginals distributed as the enstrophy measure. The method relies on nontrivial computations on the structure constants of $\mathbb{S}^2$, that appear to be new. In the last section we discuss the problem of extending our results to Gibbsian measures associated with higher Casimirs.

On the dimension theory of random walks and group actions by circle diffeomorphisms

Abstract:We establish new results on the dimensional properties of measures and invariant sets associated to random walks and group actions by circle diffeomorphisms. This leads to several dynamical applications. Among the applications, we show, strengthening of a recent result of Deroin-Kleptsyn-Navas [24], that the minimal set of a finitely generated group of real-analytic circle diffeomorphisms, if exceptional, must have Hausdorff dimension less than one. Moreover, if the minimal set contains a fixed point of multiplicity k + 1 of an diffeomorphism of the group, then its Hausdorff dimension must be greater than k/(k + 1). These results generalize classical results about Fuchsian group actions on the circle to non-linear settings. This work is built on three novel components, each of which holds its own interest: a structure theorem for smooth random walks on the circle, several dimensional properties of smooth random walks on the circle and a dynamical generalization of the critical exponent of Fuchsian groups.

Limitations of the Generalized Pareto Distribution-based estimators for the local dimension

Abstract:Two dynamical indicators, the local dimension and the extremal index, used to quantify persistence in phase space have been developed and applied to different data across various disciplines. These are computed using the asymptotic limit of exceedances over a threshold, which turns to be a Generalized Pareto Distribution in many cases. However the derivation of the asymptotic distribution requires mathematical properties which are not present even in highly idealized dynamical systems, and unlikely to be present in real data. Here we examine in detail issues that arise when estimating these quantities for some known dynamical systems with a particular focus on how the geometry of an invariant set can affect the regularly varying properties of the invariant measure. We demonstrate that singular measures supported on sets of non-integer dimension are typically not regularly varying and that the absence of regular variation makes the estimates resolution dependent. We show as well that the most common extremal index estimation method is ambiguous for continuous time processes sampled at fixed time steps, which is an underlying assumption in its application to data.

Expanding measures: Random walks and rigidity on homogeneous spaces

Abstract:Let $G$ be a real Lie group, $\Lambda<G$ a lattice and $H<G$ a connected semisimple subgroup without compact factors and with finite center. We define the notion of $H$-expanding measures $\mu$ on $H$ and, applying recent work of Eskin-Lindenstrauss, prove that $\mu$-stationary probability measures on $G/\Lambda$ are homogeneous. Transferring a construction by Benoist-Quint and drawing on ideas of Eskin-Mirzakhani-Mohammadi, we construct Lyapunov/Margulis functions to show that $H$-expanding random walks on $G/\Lambda$ satisfy a recurrence condition and that homogeneous subspaces are repelling. Combined with a countability result, this allows us to prove equidistribution of trajectories in $G/\Lambda$ for $H$-expanding random walks and to obtain orbit closure descriptions. Finally, elaborating on an idea of Simmons-Weiss, we deduce Birkhoff genericity of a class of measures with respect to some diagonal flows and extend their applications to Diophantine approximation on similarity fractals to a non-conformal and weighted setting.

Typical dimension and absolute continuity for classes of dynamically defined measures, Part II : exposition and extensions

Abstract:This paper is partly an exposition, and partly an extension of our work [1] to the multiparameter case. We consider certain classes of parametrized dynamically defined measures. These are push-forwards, under the natural projection, of ergodic measures for parametrized families of smooth iterated function systems (IFS) on the line. Under some assumptions, most crucially, a transversality condition, we obtain formulas for the Hausdorff dimension of the measure and absolute continuity for almost every parameter in the appropriate parameter region. The main novelty of [1] and the present paper is that not only the IFS, but also the ergodic measure in the symbolic space, whose push-forward we consider, depends on the parameter. This includes many interesting families of measures, in particular, invariant measures for IFS's with place-dependent probabilities and natural (equilibrium) measures for smooth IFS's. One of the goals of this paper is to present an exposition of [1] in a more reader-friendly way, emphasizing the ideas and proof strategies, but omitting the more technical parts. This exposition/survey is based in part on the series of lectures by Károly Simon at the Summer School "Dynamics and Fractals" in 2023 at the Banach Center, Warsaw. The main new feature, compared to [1], is that we consider multi-parameter families; in other words, the set of parameters is allowed to be multi-dimensional. This broadens the scope of applications. A new application considered here is to a class of Furstenberg-like measures.

Abstract:By introducing a novel expression for the Hausdorff and packing measures, denoted as Hφt and Pφt , respectively, in relation to the gauge function defined as φt(x)=h−1(tg(x)) for all positive values of t , we establish a connection between different approaches to defining the exact dimensions of Hausdorff and packing. Furthermore, we define both the upper and lower dimensions of Hausdorff and packing for a Borel probability measure and demonstrate that these dimensions can be represented using an entropy formula. This paper also addresses an intriguing question that has been raised multiple times regarding the structural representation of singular probability measures. We provide an affirmative response to this question by utilizing characteristic measures.

General harmonic measures for distance-expanding dynamical systems

Abstract:Partially motivated by the study of I. Binder, N. Makarov, and S. Smirnov [BMS03] on dimension spectra of polynomial Cantor sets, we initiate the investigation on some general harmonic measures, inspired by Sullivan's dictionary, for distance-expanding dynamical systems. Let $f\colon X\to X$ be an open distance-expanding map on a compact metric space $(X,\rho)$. A Gromov hyperbolic tile graph $\Gamma$ associated to the dynamical system $(X,f)$ is constructed following the ideas from M. Bonk, D. Meyer [BM17] and P. Haïssinsky, K. M. Pilgrim [HP09]. We consider a class of one-sided random walks associated with $(X,f)$ on $\Gamma$. They induce a Martin boundary of the tile graph, which may be different from the hyperbolic boundary. We show that the Martin boundary of such a random walk admits a surjection to $X$. We provide a class of examples to show that the surjection may not be a homeomorphism. Such random walks also induce measures on $X$ called harmonic measures. When $\rho$ is a visual metric, we establish an equality between the fractal dimension of the harmonic measure and the asymptotic quantities of the random walk.
