Abstract:Migratory species are an important component of biodiversity and provide essential ecosystem services for humans, but many are threatened and endangered. Numerous studies have been conducted on the biology of migratory species, and there is an increased recognition of the major role of human dimensions in conserving migratory species. However, there is a lack of systematic integration of socioeconomic and environmental factors. Because human activities affect migratory species in multiple places, integrating socioeconomic and environmental factors across space is essential, but challenging. The holistic framework of telecoupling (socioeconomic and environmental interactions over distances) has the potential to help meet this challenge because it enables researchers to integrate human and natural interactions across multiple distant places. The use of the telecoupling framework may also lead to new conservation strategies and actions. To demonstrate its potential, we apply the framework to Kirtland's warblers (Setophaga kirt-landii), a conservation-reliant migratory songbird. Results show accomplishments from long-term research and recovery efforts on the warbler in the context of the telecoupling framework. The results also show 24 research gaps even though the species has been relatively well-studied compared to many other species. An important gap is a lack of systematic studies on feedbacks among breeding, wintering, and stopover sites, as well as other "spillover" systems that may affect and be affected by migration (e. g., via tourism, land use, or climate change). The framework integrated scattered information and provided useful insights about new research topics and flow-centered management approaches that encapsulate the full annual cycle of migration. We also illustrate the similarities and differences between Kirtland's warblers and several other migratory species, indicating the applicability of the telecoupling framework to understanding and managing common complexities associated with migratory species in a globalizing world.
Contrasting migratory ecology of two threatened and allochronic storm-petrels breeding in the Mexican Pacific

Abstract:Migration is an essential life stage in many species, but is little understood in some groups, e.g. storm-petrels. Considering that storm-petrels reside in non-breeding areas for over half of their lifespan, identifying these areas is a priority for conservation efforts. Townsend’s Hydrobates socorroensis and Ainley’s storm-petrels H. cheimomnestes are 2 threatened sister species, breeding allochronically on Guadalupe Island (Mexican Pacific), for which migratory patterns are unknown. In this article, we describe the non-breeding areas of these 2 species, assess artificial light events recorded by geolocators, and describe the birds’ daily activity patterns. We deployed geolocators from 2021 to 2023 and modeled migratory routes using SGAT. We successfully tracked 7 Townsend’s and 4 Ainley’s storm-petrels over their non-breeding period. Townsend’s storm-petrels were found to travel to the south of the Baja California Peninsula and spent most of the time in Mexican waters, while Ainley’s storm-petrels migrated toward Hawaii and spent most of the time on the high seas. For the Townsend’s storm-petrels, 16.1% of their core areas are in protected waters, whereas for Ainley’s storm-petrel, only 0.7% of the core areas are protected, and 0.8% of those areas are recognized as key biodiversity areas (KBAs). Further, our findings indicate that both species are mainly nocturnal, making them highly susceptible to the impacts of light pollution; we detected 6 artificial light events. Our findings also support the hypothesis that divergence in the migration patterns between allochronic populations could be a crucial factor in sympatric speciation, which seems likely in seasonal environments like the northern Pacific.

Abstract:Foraging behavior plays a fundamental role in animal fitness and population dynamics, particularly in marine ecosystems where seabirds like petrels showcase a diverse array of foraging strategies finely adapted to the pelagic environment, but rarely studied. However, the extent and remote nature of their foraging grounds makes direct observation of foraging behaviour impractical, thereby requiring the use of remote tracking technology. We deployed miniaturized multi-sensor biologgers and collected fine scale movement data to investigate the at-sea behaviours of the Bermuda petrel , a poorly studied and highly threatened gadfly petrel, specialised on mesopelagic prey. GPS-tracking data revealed extensive foraging trips, in consistent directions, over remote oceanic regions. Accelerometer-data analysis highlighted three flying-related and three water-related behaviours. Flying behaviour reflected the expected dynamic soaring flight strategy of procellariforms; individuals spent more than three-quarters of their time in flight with non-flapping flight being the most common behaviour under all conditions. A third and less frequent flight behaviour: the intensive flight, could indicate “aerial dipping”, a characteristic foraging technique of Pterodroma species. The remaining time was spent in three water behaviours: active, inactive, and intensive, with the latter being less common but likely reflecting scavenging and prey seizing. All behaviours but intensive water and flight had a diel activity pattern. Flight-related behaviours increased with negative sun elevation values while water-related behaviours showed an opposite trend, highlighting greater flight activity during nighttime. Finally, time-depth-recorders complemented the results suggesting that the meso-bathypelagic prey targeted by petrels must be available in the very upper layer of the water surface, given the very limited diving capacity of petrels. While some of our findings may require further validation to confirm their relevance to foraging behaviour, our work offers new insights to take into consideration when assessing the extent and nature of offshore anthropogenic-related risks faced by petrels.

Abstract:Avian long-distance migration requires refined programming to orchestrate the birds' movements on annual temporal and continental spatial scales. Programming is particularly important as long-distance movements typically anticipate future environmental conditions. Hence, migration has long been of particular interest in chronobiology. Captivity studies using a proxy, the shift to nocturnality during migration seasons (i.e., migratory restlessness), have revealed circannual and circadian regulation, as well as an innate sense of direction. Thanks to rapid development of tracking technology, detailed information from free-flying birds, including annual-cycle data and actograms, now allows relating this mechanistic background to behaviour in the wild. Likewise, genomic approaches begin to unravel the many physiological pathways that contribute to migration. Despite these advances, it is still unclear how migration programmes are integrated with specific environmental conditions experienced during the journey. Such knowledge is imminently important as temporal environments undergo rapid anthropogenic modification. Migratory birds as a group are not dealing well with the changes, yet some species show remarkable adjustments at behavioural and genetic levels. Integrated research programmes and interdisciplinary collaborations are needed to understand the range of responses of migratory birds to environmental change, and more broadly, the functioning of timing programmes under natural conditions.

Abstract:Unsustainable fossil fuel emissions have prompted a global shift towards renewable energy sources, such as wind. This has led to a strong expansion of wind power generation infrastructures, often conflicting with biodiversity conservation. Relatively large flying animals, such as birds and bats, have frequently been reported to collide with wind turbines, resulting in casualties that can depress population size and lead to local extinctions. Migratory species that move across continents through their year-round displacements may be especially at risk. We comprehensively assessed wind turbine exposure for a colonial migratory raptor of European conservation interest, the lesser kestrel Falco naumanni , based on the distribution and size of >1800 colonies and a large GPS-tracking dataset (>350 individuals) for three distinct biogeographical populations (from Iberian, Italian, and Balkan peninsulas). 26 % of the European population has at least one wind turbine within the foraging areas around colony sites, Italian colonies being most at risk. The main European network of protected areas, the Natura 2000 network, failed to mitigate the potential negative impact of wind turbines on breeding populations. GPS-tracking revealed that exposure was negligible in the African non-breeding areas (Sahel region), particularly high during migration, and lower during breeding for Iberian and Balkan individuals but not for Italian ones. Different countries should prioritize different measures to mitigate collision risk with wind power generation infrastructures. This case study can be leveraged by conservationists and renewable energy stakeholders to mitigate conflicts between biodiversity conservation and expected wind energy infrastructure development in the near future.

Abstract:The Tempest (1611) is a play often quoted for its ecological significance: indeed, it is one in which Shakespeare once again addresses the question of climate and the four elements in his revisiting of the early modern travel narratives (in which, incidentally, the motif of the fiery ocean was a topos of the genre). In this rewriting of Virgil’s Aeneid not entirely devoid of Homeric reminiscences, the playwright returns to the initial questions of the Dream : can men and women rule the elements? If we trigger off a climatic disorder, can it be mended? And if we lose control, what may then ensue? The playwright thus reassesses the role of man’s ‘potent art’ (5.1.50) in the ordering of nature. Chapter 7 explores the idea of temperance in connection with that of temperate clime, and it shows that Prospero’s tempest, meant both as a form of revenge against Antonio and as a means of catharsis and rebirth, is deeply problematic as it oscillates between the illusory and the real, magic and science, the sublime and the mundane. Providing us with kaleidoscopic views, the play cogently explores the power of the elements and reaffirms that, for Shakespeare, what appears in the celestial sphere cannot be dissociated from what happens on earth.

Abstract:Meso- and submesoscales (fronts, eddies, filaments) in surface ocean flow have a crucial influence on marine ecosystems. Their dynamics partly control the foraging behavior and the displacement of marine top predators (tuna, birds, turtles, and cetaceans). In this work we focus on the role of submesoscale structures in the Mozambique Channel in the distribution of a marine predator, the Great Frigatebird. Using a newly developed dynamic concept, the finite-size Lyapunov exponent (FSLE), we identified Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs) present in the surface flow in the channel over a 2-month observation period (August and September 2003). By comparing seabird satellite positions with LCS locations, we demonstrate that frigatebirds track precisely these structures in the Mozambique Channel, providing the first evidence that a top predator is able to track these FSLE ridges to locate food patches. After comparing bird positions during long and short trips and different parts of these trips, we propose several hypotheses to understand how frigatebirds can follow these LCSs. The birds might use visual and/or olfactory cues and/or atmospheric current changes over the structures to move along these biologic corridors. The birds being often associated with tuna schools around foraging areas, a thorough comprehension of their foraging behavior and movement during the breeding season is crucial not only to seabird ecology but also to an appropriate ecosystemic approach to fisheries in the channel.

Abstract:Seasonal migration is a widespread phenomenon, which is found in many different lineages of animals. This spectacular behaviour allows animals to avoid seasonally adverse environmental conditions to exploit more favourable habitats. Migration has been intensively studied in birds, which display astonishing variation in migration strategies, thus providing a powerful system for studying the ecological and evolutionary processes that shape migratory behaviour. Despite intensive research, the genetic basis of migration remains largely unknown. Here, we used state-of-the-art radio-tracking technology to characterize the migratory behaviour of a partially migratory population of European blackbirds (Turdus merula) in southern Germany. We compared gene expression of resident and migrant individuals using high-throughput transcriptomics in blood samples. Analyses of sequence variation revealed a nonsignificant genetic structure between blackbirds differing by their migratory phenotype. We detected only four differentially expressed genes between migrants and residents, which might be associated with hyperphagia, moulting and enhanced DNA replication and transcription. The most pronounced changes in gene expression occurred between migratory birds depending on when, in relation to their date of departure, blood was collected. Overall, the differentially expressed genes detected in this analysis may play crucial roles in determining the decision to migrate, or in controlling the physiological processes required for the onset of migration. These results provide new insights into, and testable hypotheses for, the molecular mechanisms controlling the migratory phenotype and its underlying physiological mechanisms in blackbirds and other migratory bird species.

Abstract:The diverse marine ecosystems found within South America provide a suitable habitat for a wide array of avian species. Nevertheless, despite the richness of species that these ecosystems support, there are still several among them that continue to elude comprehensive scientific understanding and remain unknown. This comprehensive scientific review delves into the intriguing world of two data-deficient marine bird species inhabiting the Pacific coastal regions of South America: the White-Vented Storm-Petrel Oceanites gracilis (Elliot, 1859) and the Pincoya Storm-Petrel Oceanites pincoyae (Harrison et al. 2013). Through an interdisciplinary approach encompassing morphology, distribution, ecology, and conservation issues, we aim to synthesize the available literature about these two species, shedding light on their potential conservation challenges, while also identifying areas where future research efforts should be directed. Much like seabird populations worldwide, these two species are currently confronted with threats such as habitat degradation, overfishing, human disturbances, and disease outbreaks, all of which have the potential to lead to significant population declines in the near future. Based on the IUCN criteria and considering the regional extent of their distribution and population numbers, we suggest a reclassification of both species and strongly advocate for their inclusion in scientific and conservation initiatives to avert their extinction.

Exploring storm petrel pattering and sea-anchoring using deep reinforcement learning

Abstract:Developing hybrid aerial-aquatic vehicles that can interact with water surfaces while remaining aloft is valuable for various tasks, including ecological monitoring, water quality sampling, and search and rescue operations. Storm petrels are a group of pelagic seabirds that exhibit a unique locomotion pattern known as 'pattering' or 'sea-anchoring,' which is hypothesized to support forward locomotion and/or stationary posture at the water surface. In this study, we use morphological measurements of three storm petrel species and aero/hydrodynamic models to develop a computational storm petrel model and interact it with a hybrid fluid environment. Using deep reinforcement learning algorithms, we find that the storm petrel model exhibits high maneuverability and stability under a wide range of constant wind velocities after training. We also verify in the simulation that the storm petrel can use its 'pattering' or 'sea-anchoring' behavior to achieve different biomechanical sub-tasks (e.g. weight support, forward locomotion, stabilization) and adapt it under different wind speeds and optimization objectives. Specifically, we observe an adjustment in storm petrel's movement patterns as wind velocity increases and quantitively analyze its biomechanics underneath. Our results provide new insights into how storm petrels achieve efficient locomotion and dynamic stability at the air-water interface and adapt their behaviors to different wind velocities and tasks in open environments. Ultimately, our study will guide the design of next-generation biomimetic petrel-inspired robots for tasks requiring proximity to the water interface and efficiency.

Abstract:In late summer and autumn, the passage of intense tropical cyclones can profoundly perturb oceanic and coastal ecosystems. Direct negative effects on individuals and marine communities can be dramatic, especially in the coastal zone,1,2,3,4 but cyclones can also enhance pelagic primary and secondary production.5,6,7,8,9 However, cyclone impacts on open ocean marine life remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate their effects on the foraging movements of a wide-ranging higher predator, the Desertas petrel (Pterodroma deserta), in the mid-latitude North Atlantic during hurricane season. Contrary to previously studied pelagic seabirds in tropical and mid-latitude regions,10,11 Desertas petrels did not avoid cyclones by altering course, nor did they seek calmer conditions within the cyclone eye. Approximately one-third of petrels tracked from their breeding colony interacted with approaching cyclones. Upon encountering strong winds, the birds reduced ground speed, likely by spending less time in flight. A quarter of birds followed cyclone wakes for days and over thousands of kilometers, a behavior documented here for the first time. Within these wakes, tailwind support was higher than along alternative routes. Furthermore, at the mesoscale (hours-weeks and hundreds of kilometers), sea surface temperature dropped and surface chlorophyll sharply increased, suggesting direct effects on ocean stratification, primary production, and therefore presumably prey abundance and accessibility for surface-feeding petrels. We therefore hypothesize that cyclone wakes provide both predictably favorable wind conditions and foraging opportunities. As such, cyclones may have positive net effects on the demography of many mid-latitude pelagic seabirds and, likely, other marine top-predators.
Avian responses to an extreme weather event: The case of the 'Filomena' snowstorm in Madrid (central Spain)

Abstract:Cold spells and severe weather may have detrimental effects in wild birds, but owing to the stochastic nature of these events, it is not always possible to measure their impacts. In January 2021, a strong snowstorm known as 'Filomena' affected Spain, mainly the region of Madrid (Central Spain), which was fully covered with snow and suffered freezing temperatures for a fortnight. Using bird surveys conducted in the winter-spring of 2020 and 2021 (before and after Filomena) at same locations, we addressed the possible impact of the cold spell in three widespread gamebirds: Wood Pigeon ( Columba palumbus ), Eurasian Magpie ( Pica pica ) and Red-legged Partridge ( Alectoris rufa ). No significant abundance differences were found between years for none of the species and hunting pressure was only significantly reduced for Partridges, hence this species may have been negatively affected by Filomena. Results suggest that in response to Filomena, Pigeons conducted partial migration in search of better conditions, while Magpies aggregated in certain areas of Madrid and Partridges endured the harsh conditions within their home ranges. Our results highlight the importance to alleviate negative impacts of extreme weather events in wild birds through management actions, especially for sedentary species.

Abstract:Human mobility necessitates that people adapt not only to a new society but also to a new natural environment and biodiversity. We use birds as biodiversity proxies to explore the place experiences of 26 Latin Americans adapting to Canada and the United States. Using interviews with open-ended questions, we prompted participants to identify birds that were linked to remarkable experiences in both places of origin and immigration, which we coded respectively as “roots” and “routes.” Participants reported foundational keystone species linked to their cultural heritage and conspicuous key species they associated with self-realization in the new place. Linking species, involving connections between roots and routes, triggered a process of place recalibration in association with key and keystone birds that worked as points of reference. We suggest that biodiversity offers critical social functions that need to be addressed by social integration programs promoting conviviality between humans and nature in the Anthropocene.

Abstract:Addressing urgent conservation issues, like the drastic declines of North American migratory birds, requires creative, evidence-based, efficient, and collaborative approaches. Over 50% of monitored North American shorebird populations have lost over 50% of their abundance since 1980. To address these declines, we developed a partnership of scientists and practitioners called the Shorebird Science and Conservation Collective (hereinafter "the Collective"). Here, we present this successful case study as an example for others engaged in translational science. The Collective acts as an intermediary whereby dedicated staff collate and analyze data contributions from scientists to support knowledge requests from conservation practitioners. Data contributions from 74 organizations include over 6.7 million shorebird locations forming movement paths of 3,345 individuals representing 36 species tracked across the Americas. We describe the founding and structure of the Collective and conservation activities we supported in our first two years. As the volume of scientific data on animal movements continues to grow, groups like the Collective can be vital liaisons to rapidly integrate and interpret research to support conservation action.

Abstract:Movement is central to understanding the ecology of animals. The most robustly definable segments of an individual's lifetime track are its diel activity routines (DARs). This robustness is due to fixed start and end points set by a 24-h clock that depends on the individual's quotidian schedule. An analysis of day-to-day variation in the DARs of individuals, their comparisons among individuals, and the questions that can be asked, particularly in the context of lunar and annual cycles, depends on the relocation frequency and spatial accuracy of movement data. Here we present methods for categorizing the geometry of DARs for high frequency (seconds to minutes) movement data.
