Abstract:The combination of metallicity and ferroelectricity challenges conventional understanding, creating opportunities for advanced electronic materials and devices. This breakthrough is particularly notable, as metallicity and ferroelectricity have traditionally been considered mutually exclusive physical properties. In this work, starting with non-polar metallic single layers, we propose a design scheme for designing two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectric metals (FEMs) based on van der Waals interactions. By first-principles calculations, we also substantiate the feasibility of the design scheme in materials such as FeSe and H-MnTe2. Notably, this scheme unveils metallic ferroelectricity, characterized by reversing polarization through interlayer sliding. Furthermore, these systems exhibit a coexistence of inherent magnetism and sliding ferroelectricity. The investigated design scheme and observed phenomena have broad applicability across 2D materials. Our results not only advance research in 2D FEMs but also enhance the understanding of coupled physical phenomena in 2D lattices.

Abstract:Being parent materials of two-dimensional (2D) crystals, van der Waals layered materials have received revived interest. In most 2D materials, the interaction between electrons is negligible. Introducing the interaction can give rise to a variety of exotic properties. Here, via intercalating a van der Waals layered compound VS2, we find evidence for electron correlation by extensive magnetic, thermal, electrical, and thermoelectric characterizations. The low temperature Sommerfeld coefficient is 64 mJ⋅K−2⋅mol−1 and the Kadowaki–Woods ratio r KW ∼ 0.20a 0. Both supports an enhancement of the electron correlation. The temperature dependences of the resistivity and thermopower indicate an important role played by the Kondo effect. The Kondo temperature T K is estimated to be around 8 K. Our results suggest intercalation as a potential means to engineer the electron correlation in van der Waals materials, as well as 2D materials.

Abstract:With the successive confirmation of two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism and the proposal of ferrovalley, the coexistence of multiple ferroic orders in single-phase materials has attracted extensive attention. Here we demonstrate the coexistence and coupling effects of these three ferroic orders in conventional valley material systems by combining first-principles calculations and the symmetry analysis method. We show that, in 2D ferromagnets lacking inversion symmetry, spin-orbit coupling causes spin direction-dependent ferroelectricity through the p-d hybridization mechanism. The magnitude of spin-induced polarization can be significantly improved by increasing the atomic number of the anion, and the Janus monolayer exhibit an additional in-plane polarization component with respect to its parent structure when the spin deviates from being in plane. Ferrovalley and the resulting anomalous Hall effect depend on the out-of-plane spin component. This work contributes to the design of 2D room-temperature multiferroics with intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling.

Abstract:Abstract The intertwined ferroelectricity and band topology will enable the non-volatile control of the topological states, which is of importance for nanoelectrics with low energy costing and high response speed. Nonetheless, the principle to design such system is unclear and the feasible approach to achieve the coexistence of two parameter orders is absent. Here, we propose a general paradigm to design 2D ferroelectric topological insulators by sliding topological multilayers on the basis of first-principles calculations. Taking trilayer Bi 2 Te 3 as a model system, we show that in the van der Waals multilayer based 2D topological insulators, the in-plane and out-of-plane ferroelectricity can be induced through a specific interlayer sliding, to enable the coexistence of ferroelectric and topological orders. The strong coupling of the order parameters renders the topological states sensitive to polarization flip, realizing non-volatile ferroelectric control of topological properties. The revealed design-guideline and ferroelectric-topological coupling not only are useful for the fundamental research of the coupled ferroelectric and topological physics in 2D lattices, but also enable innovative applications in nanodevices.

Abstract:Multiferroic materials with coupled ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties are important for multifunctional devices due to their potential ability of controlling magnetism via electric field, and vice versa. The recent discoveries of two-dimensional ferromagnetic and ferroelectric materials have ignited tremendous research interest and aroused hope to search for two-dimensional multiferroics. However, intrinsic two-dimensional multiferroic materials and, particularly, those with strong magnetoelectric couplings are still rare to date. In this paper, using first-principles simulations, we propose artificial two-dimensional multiferroics via a van der Waals heterostructure formed by ferromagnetic bilayer chromium triiodide (CrI3) and ferroelectric monolayer Sc2CO2. In addition to the coexistence of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity, our calculations show that, by switching the electric polarization of Sc2CO2, we can tune the interlayer magnetic couplings of bilayer CrI3 between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states. We further reveal that such a strong magnetoelectric effect is from a dramatic change of the band alignment induced by the strong build-in electric polarization in Sc2CO2 and the subsequent change of the interlayer magnetic coupling of bilayer CrI3. These artificial multiferroics and enhanced magnetoelectric effect give rise to realizing multifunctional nanoelectronics by van der Waals heterostructures.

Abstract:Abstract Multiferroic materials have been intensively pursued to achieve the mutual control of electric and magnetic properties. The breakthrough progress in 2D magnets and ferroelectrics encourages the exploration of low-dimensional multiferroics, which holds the promise of understanding inscrutable magnetoelectric coupling and inventing advanced spintronic devices. However, confirming ferroelectricity with optical techniques is challenging in 2D materials, particularly in conjunction with antiferromagnetic orders in single- and few-layer multiferroics. Here, we report the discovery of 2D vdW multiferroic with out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization in trilayer NiI 2 device, as revealed by scanning reflective magnetic circular dichroism microscopy and ferroelectric hysteresis loops. The evolution between ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases has been unambiguously observed. Moreover, the magnetoelectric interaction is directly probed by magnetic control of the multiferroic domain switching. This work opens up opportunities for exploring multiferroic orders and multiferroic physics at the limit of single or few atomic layers, and for creating advanced magnetoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Interest in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials has grown rapidly across multiple scientific and engineering disciplines in recent years. However, ferroelectricity, the presence of a spontaneous electric polarization, which is important in many practical applications, has rarely been reported in such materials so far. Here we employ first-principles calculations to discover a branch of the 2D materials family, based on In2Se3 and other III2-VI3 van der Waals materials, that exhibits room-temperature ferroelectricity with reversible spontaneous electric polarization in both out-of-plane and in-plane orientations. The device potential of these 2D ferroelectric materials is further demonstrated using the examples of van der Waals heterostructures of In2Se3/graphene, exhibiting a tunable Schottky barrier, and In2Se3/WSe2, showing a significant band gap reduction in the combined system. These findings promise to substantially broaden the tunability of van der Waals heterostructures for a wide range of applications.

Abstract:The discoveries of magnetism and ferroelectricity in 2D van der Waals (vdW) materials have brought important functionalities to the 2D materials family, and may trigger a revolution in next generation nanoelectronics and spintronics. In this perspective article, we briefly review the recent progress in the field of 2D ferroelectrics, focusing on the mechanisms that drive spontaneous polarizations in 2D systems, unique properties brought about by the reduced lattice dimensionality, and promising applications of 2D ferroelectrics. At the end, we provide an outlook for challenges that need to be addressed and our view on possible future research directions.

Abstract:The recent discovery of two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism in van der Waals materials has opened the door to the control of 2D magnetism by means of electric field. Here we demonstrate the magnetization reversal through switching polarization in a designed 2D multiferroic oxide by combining group theory analysis and first-principles calculation. We show that ferroelectricity can be induced by a specific octahedral rotation in a perovskite bilayer. Ferromagnetism can be introduced simultaneously by extending the guideline to the B-site ordered double-perovskite bilayer. We have found two coupling mechanisms between polarization and magnetization that enable the reversal of the in-plane magnetization by ferroelectric switching. Our work provides guidelines for the design of 2D multiferroics with intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling and helps to control the 2D magnetism by electric field.
Ferroelectrovalley in Two-Dimensional Multiferroic Lattices

Abstract:Engineering valley index is essential and highly sought for valley physics, but currently it is exclusively based on the paradigm of the challenging ferrovalley with spin-orientation reversal under magnetic field. Here, an alternative strategy, i.e., the so-called ferroelectrovalley, is proposed to tackle the insurmountable spin-orientation reversal, which reveres valley index with the feasible ferroelectricity. Using symmetry arguments and tight-binding model, the C_2 rotation is unveiled to be able to take the place of time reversal for operating valley index in two-dimensional multiferroic kagome lattices, which enables the ferroelectricity-engineered valley index, thereby generating the concept of ferroelectrovalley. Based on first-principles calculations, this concept is further demonstrated in the breathing kagome lattice of single-layer Ti3Br8, wherein ferroelectricity couples the breathing process. These findings open a new direction for valleytronics and two-dimensional materials research.

Abstract:Multiferroic materials are potential to be applied in novel magnetoelectric devices, for example, high-density non-volatile storage. Last decades, research on multiferroic materials was focused on three-dimensional (3D) materials. However, 3D materials suffer from the dangling bonds and quantum tunneling in the nano-scale thin films. Two-dimensional (2D) materials might provide an elegant solution to these problems, and thus are highly on demand. Using first-principles calculations, we predict ferromagnetism and driven ferroelectricity in the monolayer and even a few-layers of CuCrP2S6. Although the total energy of the ferroelectric phase of monolayer is higher than that of the antiferroelectric phase, the ferroelectric phases can be realized by applying a large electric field. Besides the degrees of freedoms in the common multiferroic materials, the valley degree of freedom is also polarized according to our calculations. The spins, electric dipoles and valleys are coupled with each other as shown in the computational results. In experiment, we observe the out-of-plane ferroelectricity in a few-layer CuCrP2S6 (approximately 13 nm thick) at room temperature. 2D ferromagnetism of few-layers is inferred from magnetic hysteresis loops of the massively stacked nanosheets at 10 K. The experimental observations support our calculation very well. Our findings may provide a series of 2D materials for further device applications.

Abstract:One/two-dimensional (1D/2D) ferroelectric (FE) materials have emerged as a captivating frontier in condensed matter physics, with promising applications in next-generation functional devices. As a complementary to experimental methods, theoretical calculations based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) greatly accelerate the exploration of low-dimensional ferroelectrics, helping to identify promising candidates for experimental synthesis and guiding the design of new materials with tailored properties. Herein, we give a mini review of recent theoretical progress in the exploration of 1D or 2D FE materials, and highlight some of our contributions to this active field, such as triferroic coupling in dual transition-metal dichalcogenides, highly degenerate 2D ferroelectricity in pore decorated metal/covalent organic frameworks, FE switching controlled magnetic order, and discovery of intrinsic 1D FE material. Finally, we give some perspectives on the remaining challenges and opportunities for predicting low-dimensional FE materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional ferroelectric and magnetic van der Waals materials are emergent platforms for the discovery of novel cooperative quantum phenomena and development of energy-efficient logic and memory applications as well as neuromorphic and topological computing. This review presents a comprehensive survey of the rapidly growing 2D ferroic family from the synthesis perspective, including brief introductions to the top-down and bottom-up approaches for fabricating 2D ferroic flakes, thin films, and heterostructures as well as the important characterization techniques for assessing the sample properties. We also discuss the key challenges and future directions of the field, including scalable growth, property control, sample stability, and integration with other functional materials.

Stacking-engineered ferroelectricity and multiferroic order in van der Waals magnets

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials that exhibit spontaneous magnetization, polarization or strain (referred to as ferroics) have the potential to revolutionize nanotechnology by enhancing the multifunctionality of nanoscale devices. However, multiferroic order is difficult to achieve, requiring complicated coupling between electron and spin degrees of freedom. We propose a universal method to engineer multiferroics from van der Waals magnets by taking advantage of the fact that changing the stacking between 2D layers can break inversion symmetry, resulting in ferroelectricity and possibly magnetoelectric coupling. We illustrate this concept using first-principles calculations in bilayer NiI$_2$, which can be made ferroelectric upon rotating two adjacent layers by $180^{\circ}$ with respect to the bulk stacking. Furthermore, we discover a novel multiferroic order induced by interlayer charge transfer which couples the interlayer spin order and electronic polarization. Our approach is not only general but also systematic, and can enable the discovery of a wide variety of 2D multiferroics.

Abstract:Electrical control of magnetic order in van der Waals (vdW) two-dimensional (2D) systems is appealing for high-efficiency and low-dissipation nanospintronic devices. For realistic applications, a vdW 2D material with ferromagnetic (FM) and ferroelectric (FE) orders coexisting and strongly coupling at room temperature is urgently needed. Here we present a potential candidate for nonvolatile electric-field control of magnetic orders at room temperature. Using first-principles calculations, we predict the coexistence of room-temperature FM and FE orders in a 2D transition metal carbide, where the spatial distribution of magnetic moments strongly couples with the orientation of out-of-plane electric polarization. Furthermore, an electric-field switching between interfacial FM and ferrimagnetic orders is realizable through constructing a multiferroic vdW heterostructure based on this material. These findings make a significant step toward realizing room-temperature multiferroicity and strong magnetoelectric coupling in 2D materials.

Abstract:Applied Physics Letters, Volume 120, Issue 19, May 2022. Multiferroics, which combines two or more ferroic orders, is of significant fundamental and practical importance in condensed-matter physics and materials science. Although multiferroics has been broadly studied for decades, intrinsic triferroicity is rarely explored, especially with ferromagnetic ordering. Here, we propose a general mechanism for realizing intrinsic ferromagnetic triferroicity in two-dimensional van der Waals lattices through interlayer sliding and further demonstrate it in bilayer T′-VTe2. Using first-principles calculations, we reveal that bilayer T′-VTe2 exhibits spontaneous ferromagnetism, ferroelasticity, and ferroelectricity simultaneously, yielding the long-sought intrinsic triferroicity. We further predict that such a system could possess many distinctive physics, for example, the ferroelastic control of magnetization orientation and ferroelectric control of magnetic moment distribution. The explored mechanism and phenomena not only greatly enrich the research on two-dimensional multiferroics but also provide a promising avenue to realize novel quantum device applications.
