Abstract:With the rapid development of metasurface and metamaterials, the image edge detection based on the optical spatial differential calculation becomes an interesting topic in recent years. There have been a certain number of studies in this region, but most of them are applicable only to one-dimensional optical spatial differential calculation. In this work, a two-dimensional optical differentiator using Pancharatnam-Berry (P-B) phase metasurface is proposed and implemented in optical image two-dimensional edge detection. Based on the principle of the spin-dependent splitting from P-B phase devices, this metasurface is capable of separating the left-handed circularly polarized light from the right-handed circularly polarized light at a certain spatial distance. After filtering out the overlapped linear polarization, the left optical information is the result of the two-dimensional optical spatial differential. Meanwhile, the resolution of the image edge information is adjustable by changing the optic axis distribution of this two-dimensional optical differentiator. These results indicate that our P-B phase metasurface can be applied to the extraction of the optical image two-dimensional edge information, and the extracted edge information is more complete than the previous one-dimensional grating metasurface. For these advantages, this two-dimensional optical differentiator shows great potential applications in ultrafast optical calculation and image processing.
Anisotropic Mode Excitations and Enhanced Quantum Interference in Quantum Emitter-Metasurface Coupled Systems

Abstract:This study proposes a nanophotonic structure that supports quantum interference (QI) between orthogonal decay channels in multilevel quantum emitters within the framework of the quantum master equation. The Green functions of the electric field are obtained by applying boundary conditions in the presence of two-dimensional metasurfaces. We demonstrate distinct in-plane excitation features of the surface plasmon modes (SPMs) with the anisotropic metasurfaces tailored to conductivity components. In particular, we observed that the Purcell factor of transitions with orthogonal polarizations experiences unequal enhancements, owing to the anisotropic propagation of the SPMs. This property depends only on the anisotropy of the metasurfaces; thus, it is easily manipulated. Using this platform and considering experimentally achievable material parameters, we predict a strong interference effect in three-level quantum emitters. In principle, this enables the generation of maximum QI. Our study provides a method for realizing QI systems and has potential applications in highly integrated, tuneable quantum devices.
Edge detection imaging by quasi-bound states in the continuum

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces have revolutionized analog computing and image processing at sub-wavelength scales with faster speed and lower power consumption. They typically involve spatial differentiation with engineered angular dispersion. Quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs) have recently emerged as a powerful tool for tailoring properties of optical resonances. While quasi-BICs have been explored in various applications that require high $Q$-factors and enhanced field confinement, their full potential in image processing remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate edge detection imaging by leveraging a quasi-BIC in an all-dielectric metasurface. This metasurface, composed of four nanodisks per unit cell, supports a polarization-independent quasi-BIC through structural perturbations, allowing simultaneously engineering $Q$-factor and angular dispersion. Importantly, we find that with suitable parameters, this quasi-BIC metasurface can perform isotropic two-dimensional spatial differentiation, which is the core element for realizing edge detection. Following the theoretical design, we fabricate the metasurfaces on the silicon-on-insulator platform and experimentally validate their capability of high-quality, efficient, and uniform edge detection imaging under different incident polarizations. Our results illuminate the mechanisms of edge detection with quasi-BIC metasurfaces and highlight new opportunities for their application in ultra-compact, low-power optical computing devices.

Abstract:Quantum imaging has non-negligible advantages in terms of sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio, and novel imaging schemes. Based on metasurfaces, the information density and stability of the quantum imaging system can be further improved. Here we experimentally demonstrate that two patterns, simultaneously and independently superimposed on a high-efficiency dielectric metasurface, can be remotely switched via polarization-entangled photon pairs. Furthermore, using the time-correlated property of entangled photon pairs, the information carried by quantum light can be remarkably discriminated from background noise. This work confirms that the phase manipulation of quantum light with metasurfaces has a huge potential in the field of quantum imaging, quantum state tomography, and also promises real-world quantum metasurface devices.

Abstract:Significance Edge detection is a fundamental tool in image processing, computing, and machine vision. Compared with digital processes, optical analog approaches show enormous advantages owing to its intrinsic parallel nature for high-speed operation. Recently, optical metamaterials and metasurfaces have performed edge detection via analog spatial differentiation, which shows superior integration capability compared with the traditional bulky system. Unfortunately, experimental realization of optical-edge detection with metamaterials and metasurfaces remains challenging based on previous theoretical proposals. Here, we demonstrated a mechanism to realize an optical spatial differentiator consisting of a designed metasurface sandwiched by two orthogonally aligned linear polarizers. This approach relies on spin-orbit interaction of light and the metasurface, showing versatile edge-detection capability with exceptional quality.

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces open new avenues for precise wavefront control of light for integrated quantum technology. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid integrated quantum photonic system that is capable to entangle and disentangle two-photon spin states at a dielectric metasurface. By interfering single-photon pairs at a nanostructured dielectric metasurface, a path-entangled two-photon NOON state with circular polarization is generated that exhibits a quantum HOM interference visibility of 86 $\pm$ 4%. Furthermore, we demonstrate nonclassicality and phase sensitivity in a metasurface-based interferometer with a fringe visibility of 86.8 $\pm$ 1.1 % in the coincidence counts. This high visibility proves the metasurface-induced path entanglement inside the interferometer. Our findings provide a promising way to hybrid-integrated quantum technology with high-dimensional functionalities in various applications like imaging, sensing, and computing.

Abstract:We develop a concept of metasurface-assisted ghost imaging for nonlocal discrimination between a set of polarization objects. The specially designed metasurfaces are incorporated in the imaging system to perform parallel state transformations in general elliptical bases of quantum-entangled or classically correlated photons. Then, only four or fewer correlation measurements between multiple metasurface outputs and a simple polarization-insensitive bucket detector after the object can allow for the identification of fully or partially transparent polarization elements and their arbitrary orientation angles. Abstract:Optical image edge detection manifests itself as the advantages of fast speed, low energy consumption, parallel operation, and large information capacity, playing a crucial role in object and image recognition in the realms of biology, medicine, and artificial intelligence. In this paper, a dielectric metasurface that can achieve object edge detection in the full visible band is proposed. By combining two optical differential methods referring to spatial spectrum-dependent transmission function and 4f system-based spatial spectrum phase shift, a tetratomic macropixel metasurface that enables polarization-correlated interference based on dual geometric phase modulation is designed, which can achieve object edge detection under 473, 530, and 633 nm wavelengths, and even under white light conditions. This coherent filtering metasurface operator provides a flexible approach for achieving wideband two-dimensional edge detection.

Abstract:Going quantum with metamaterials Metasurfaces should allow wafer-thin surfaces to replace bulk optical components. Two reports now demonstrate that metasurfaces can be extended into the quantum optical regime. Wang et al. determined the quantum state of multiple photons by simply passing them through a dielectric metasurface, scattering them into single-photon detectors. Stav et al. used a dielectric metasurface to generate entanglement between spin and orbital angular momentum of single photons. Metasurface-enabled quantum holograms with hybrid entanglement

Abstract:Metasurfaces, with their capability to control all possible dimensions of light, have become integral to quantum optical applications, including quantum state generation, operation, and tomography. In this work, we utilize a metasurface to generate polarization-hologram hybrid entanglement between a signal-idler photon pair to construct a quantum hologram. The properties of the quantum hologram can be revealed by collapsing the polarization degree of freedom of the idler photon, inducing interference between two holographic states of the signal photon, as a meaningful and selective erasure of the holographic content. In contrary, interference disappears when the idler photon is detected without observing polarization. This process can be further interpreted as a quantum holographic eraser, where the erasing action is visualized with erased contents in holograms. Our construction of polarization-hologram hybrid entangled state with metasurfaces will be useful for quantum communication with enhanced robustness, anti-counterfeiting applications through the additional quantum degrees of freedom, and as an emerging platform for exploring fundamental quantum concepts for entanglement and non-locality.

Quantum Imaging Using Spatially Entangled Photon Pairs from a Nonlinear Metasurface

Abstract:Nonlinear metasurfaces with subwavelength thickness were recently established as versatile platforms for the enhanced and tailorable generation of entangled photon pairs. The small dimensions and inherent stability of integrated metasurface sources are attractive for free-space applications in quantum communications, sensing, and imaging, yet this remarkable potential remained unexplored. Here, we formulate and experimentally demonstrate the unique benefits and practical potential of nonlinear metasurfaces for quantum imaging at infrared wavelengths, facilitating an efficient protocol combining ghost and all-optical scanning imaging. The metasurface incorporates a subwavelength-scale silica metagrating on a lithium niobate thin film. Its distinguishing feature is the capability to all-optically scan the photon emission angle in the direction across the grating simply by tuning the pump beam wavelength. Simultaneously, the photon emission is broad and anti-correlated along the grating direction, allowing for ghost imaging. Thereby, we reconstruct the images of 2D objects using just a 1D detector array in the idler path and a bucket detector in the signal path, by recording the dependencies of photon coincidences on the pump wavelength. Our results reveal new possibilities for quantum imaging with ultra-large field of view and improved imaging resolution as compared to photon pairs from conventional bulky crystals. The demonstrated concept can be extended to multi-wavelength operation and other applications such as quantum object tracking, paving the way for advancements in quantum technologies using ultra-compact nanostructured metasurfaces.

Abstract:Optical edge-enhanced imaging is an effective method for boundary extraction, and it is also a cutting-edge technology for object detection in image processing. With the rapid development of metamaterial and metasurface fields, the miniaturization and lightweight of optical devices have reached a new scale. At present, the experimental research of optical edge-enhanced imaging using metasurface is insufficient and lags behind the theoretical research. In this paper, we propose optical edge-enhanced imaging based on a Huygens phase metasurface in the near-infrared (NIR). The entire optical edge-enhanced process is simulated, and the feasibility of the method is verified theoretically. Then, the edge-enhanced of numbers, letters, and biological tissues is carried out experimentally, and the results are consistent with the simulation results. This study proposes a near-infrared dielectric metasurface-based edge-enhanced imaging that can find important applications in compact optical platforms such as image processing.

Abstract:Bell state measurement is vital to quantum information technology. Conventional linear optical elements, however, cannot fully distinguish all polarization Bell states without assisting of additional degrees of freedom. Leveraging on a pair of binary-pixel metasurfaces, we demonstrate direct measurement of all four polarization Bell states. Each metasurface is designed to produce two output modes that linearly superpose three Bell states in the coincidence counting measurement. By rotating the polarizers, the coincidence counting measurement achieves a tunable anticorrelation between one and the other two Bell states, achieving Bell state detection efficiency of 75% in a single measurement. Complete and deterministic Bell state measurement is further realized by performing two measurements. Our work shows the advantage of utilization of metasurfaces in quantum detection schemes and is of great applicative interest for quantum dense coding, entanglement swapping, quantum teleportation protocols, and novel quantum information processing tasks.

Abstract:With the development of optical information processing technology, image edge enhancement technology has rapidly received extensive attention, especially in the field of quantum imaging. However, quantum edge enhanced imaging faces challenges in terms of time-consuming acquisition processes and the complexity of the devices used, which limits practical applications in real-time usage scenarios. Here we introduce and experimentally demonstrate a real-time (0.5 Hz) quantum edge enhanced imaging method that combines the spiral phase contrast technique with heralded single-photon imaging. The edge enhancement results show high quality and background free from raw data. Compared with direct imaging, our configuration can improve the signal-to-noise ratio significantly using the tight time correlations between photon pairs. The method also offers competitive advantages over ghost imaging, including higher brightness and a compact optical fiber delay rather than a free space delay. Additionally, we explore curved edge enhancement for specific feature recognition and the oriented shadow effect. Overall, this efficient and versatile platform paves an alternative path toward real-time quantum edge detection in applications including nondestructive bio-imaging, night vision and covert monitoring.

Abstract:Traditional optical elements, such as waveplates and polarization beam splitters, are essential for quantum state tomography (QST). Yet, their bulky size and heavy weight are prejudicial for miniaturizing quantum information systems. Here, we introduce nondiffractive silicon metasurfaces with high transmission efficiency to replace the traditional optical elements for QST of polarization-entangled states. Two identical silicon metasurfaces are employed, and each metasurface comprises four independent districts on a micrometer scale. The unit cell of each district consists of two silicon nanopillars with different geometrical sizes and orientation angles, and the interference of the scattered waves from the nanopillars leads to a single output beam from the district with a specific polarization state with a transmission efficiency above 92%. When the two-photon polarization-entangled state shines on different districts of two metasurfaces, each photon of the photon pair interacts with the local nanopillars within the district, and the two-photon state is projected onto 16 polarization bases for state reconstruction. We experimentally demonstrate the reconstruction of four input Bell states with high fidelities. This approach significantly reduces the number of conventional optical components in the QST process and is inspiring for advancing quantum information technology.

Abstract:How to simultaneously obtain the depth, edge, and other light information of the scene to accurately perceive the physical world is an important issue for imaging systems. However, such tasks usually require bulky optical components and active illumination methods. Here, we design and experimentally validate a single geometric metasurface that can achieve depth measurement or edge detection under incoherent or coherent light respectively. Double helix point source function is utilized, and three verification experiments are carried out, including double-helix beam calibration, 2D object and 3D object detection, respectively. Additionally, two-dimensional edge detection can also be achieved. This compact imaging system can enable new applications in various fields, from machine vision to microscopy.

Abstract:Abstract Optical analog signal processing technology has been widely studied and applied in a variety of science and engineering fields, with the advantages of overcoming the low-speed and high-power consumption associated with its digital counterparts. Much attention has been given to emerging metasurface technology in the field of optical imaging and processing systems. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, broadband two-dimensional spatial differentiation and high-contrast edge imaging based on a dielectric metasurface across the whole visible spectrum. This edge detection method works for both intensity and phase objects simply by inserting the metasurface into a commercial optical microscope. This highly efficient metasurface performing a basic optical differentiation operation opens up new opportunities in applications of fast, compactible and power-efficient ultrathin devices for data processing and biological imaging.

Polarization Imaging and Edge Detection with Image-Processing Metasurfaces

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces have been recently explored as ultrathin analog image differentiators. By tailoring the momentum transfer function, they can perform efficient Fourier-filtering - and thus potentially any linear mathematical operation - on an input image, replacing bulky 4f systems. While this approach has been investigated in different platforms, and several techniques have been explored to achieve the required angular response, little effort has been devoted so far to tailor and control also the polarization response of an image-processing metasurface. Here, we show that edge-detection metasurfaces can be designed with tailored polarization responses while simultaneously preserving an isotropic response. In particular, we demonstrate single-layer silicon metasurfaces yielding efficient Laplacian operation on a 2D image with either large polarization asymmetry, or nearly polarization-independent response. In the former case, we show that a strongly asymmetric polarization response can be used to unlock more sophisticated on-the-fly image processing functionalities, such as dynamically tunable direction-dependent edge detection. In parallel, metasurfaces with dual-polarized response are shown to enable efficient operation for unpolarized or arbitrarily polarized images, ensuring high efficiency. For both devices, we demonstrate edge detection within relatively large numerical apertures, with excellent isotropy and intensity throughput. Our study paves the way for the broad use of optical metasurfaces for sophisticated, massively parallel analog image processing with zero energy requirements.

Abstract:Active manipulation on absorption takes an essential place in nanophotonic light modulators, which always suffer from static tuning ability, limited depth, and insufficient modulating efficiency. In this study, we propose an alternative strategy utilizing the symmetry-protected-type bound state in the continuum (SPBIC) to satisfy a tunable critical-coupling absorber with high modulating mobility. To demonstrate our concept, we illustrate an ultrathin critical-coupling absorbing system composed of germanium metasurface and monolayer graphene through elaborately maneuvered quasi-SPBIC, which provides substantial local field enhancement to boost the light absorption of graphene. The intensity of such critical-coupling absorption can be efficiently tuned by modulating the polarization of the incident waves with an efficiency of 97.1%. Via this polarization control, we demonstrate digital switch "0-1" and switchable and selectable image-displaying functions in simulation. Such functions are obtained in one single-designed array by incident polarization while requiring no additional structural change.
