Abstract:The element boron has long been central to two-dimensional superconducting materials, and numerous studies have demonstrated the presence of superconductivity in various boron-based structures. Recent work introduced a new variant: Bilayer Kagome borophene, characterized by its bilayer Kagome lattice with van Hove singularity. Using first-principles calculations, our research investigates the unique electronic structure and superconducting properties of Bilayer Kagome borophene (BK-borophene) through first-principles calculations. BK-borophene is identified as a single-gap superconductor with an initial superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 11.0 K. By strategically doping the material to align its Fermi level with the Van Hove singularity, Tc is significantly enhanced to 30.0 K. The results contribute to the existing understanding of BK-borophene, highlighting its potential as a member of the expanding family of two-dimensional superconducting materials.

Prediction of Nodal-Line Fermion and Phonon-Mediated Superconductivity in Bilayer Α-Borophene

Abstract:The electron deficiency of boron allows the formation of a variety of monolayer or few-layer two-dimensional structures (borophenes) with interesting physical properties. Recent experiments have also confirmed that interlayer covalent bonding makes the bilayer structure more stable than the monolayer. In this work based on α -borophene, we propose three free-stranding bilayer structures with dynamic stability. In these three metallic structures, the electronic band crossings around Fermi level form nodal lines. All these structures also exhibit strong electron-phonon couplings. The Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer superconducting critical temperature T c of the type-II structure went as high as 28.2 K, which was further improved to 32.0 K by the enhancement effect of Li adatom at the Debye frequency. However, no increase in critical temperature was observed in other Li-doping cases. Specifically, Li intercalation inside the bilayer causes a significant abrupt decrease in the critical temperature of type-I structure. Our results indicated that the bilayer borophene would be an ideal platform for the coexistence of topological electronic states and superconducting states.
Prediction of phonon-mediated superconductivity in borophene

Abstract:Superconductivity in two-dimensional compounds is widely studied, not only because of its application in constructing nano-superconducting devices, but also for general scientific interest. Very recently, borophene (a two-dimensional boron sheet) has been successfully grown on the Ag(111) surface, through direct evaporation of a pure boron source. The experiment unveiled two types of borophene structures, namely β12 and χ3. Herein, we employed density-functional first-principles calculations to investigate the electron-phonon coupling and superconductivity in both structures of borophene. The band structures of β12 and χ3 borophenes exhibit inherent metallicity. We found that electron-phonon coupling constants in the two compounds are larger than that in MgB2. The superconducting transition temperatures were determined to be 18.7 K and 24.7 K through the McMillian-Allen-Dynes formula. These temperatures are much higher than the theoretically predicted 8.1 K and experimentally observed 7.4 K superconductivity in graphene. Our findings will enrich nano-superconducting device applications and boron-related materials science.

Prediction of superconductivity in metallic boron-carbon compounds from 0 to 100 GPa by high-throughput screening

Abstract:Boron carbon compounds have been shown to have feasible superconductivity. In our earlier paper [Zheng et al., Phys. Rev. B 107, 014508 (2023)], we identified a new conventional superconductor of LiB3C at 100 GPa. Here, we aim to extend the investigation of possible superconductivity in this structural framework by replacing Li atoms with 27 different cations under pressures ranging from 0 to 100 GPa. Using the high-throughput screening method of zone-center electron-phonon interaction, we find that ternary compounds like CaB3C, SrB3C, TiB3C, and VB3C are promising candidates for superconductivity. The consecutive calculations using the full Brillouin zone confirm that they have Tc < 31 K at moderate pressures. Our study demonstrates that fast screening of superconductivity by calculating zone-center electron-phonon coupling strength is an effective strategy for high-throughput identification of new superconductors.

Abstract:Borophenes and 2D boron allotropes are metallic and exhibit a BCS superconducting state, unlike graphene. In-plane stretching vibrational modes in bulk MgB2 boron layers induce phonon-mediated superconductivity. However, the effect of stretching vibrational phonon modes on transition temperature (Tc) still requires further investigations. Here, we use first-principles calculations combined with conventional BCS theory to explore the superconducting properties in a series of dynamically stable boron-based sandwich films that have not been realized experimentally. The sandwich films of XB4 (where X = Li, Be, Zn, Ga) are predicted to exhibit good phonon-mediated superconductivity with high Tc values of 25.1 K, 28.7 K, 38.7 K, and 36.2 K, respectively. The origin of the superconducting states is mainly caused by the high metallicity and strong electron-phonon coupling (EPC), which can be attributed to the presence of intercalated atoms within the borophene layers. It is further demonstrated in the XB4 compounds (where X = Li, Be, Zn, Ga) that the pronounced EPC is not solely attributable to the in-plane vibrations of B atoms, but it is also influenced significantly by the out-of-plane vibrations of B atoms. Sandwich (Li,Be,Zn,Ga)B4 films may be a great choice for nanoscale superconductors as the electron-phonon coupling parameter becomes greater than unity, thereby providing a powerful approach for investigating these systems with high critical temperatures.
First-principles exploration of superconductivity in intercalated bilayer borophene phases

Abstract:We explore the emergence of phonon-mediated superconductivity in bilayer borophenes by controlled intercalation with elements from the groups of alkali, alkaline-earth, and transition metals, using systematic first-principles and Eliashberg calculations. We show that the superconducting properties are primarily governed by the interplay between the out-of-plane ($p_{z}$) boron states and the partially occupied in-plane ($s+p_{x,y}$) bonding states at the Fermi level. Our Eliashberg calculations indicate that intercalation with alkaline-earth elements leads to the highest superconducting critical temperatures ($T_{c}$). Specifically, Be in $\delta_{4}$, Mg in $\chi_{3}$, and Ca in the kagome bilayer borophene demonstrate superior performance with $T_{c}$ reaching up to 58~K. Our study therefore reveals that intercalated bilayer borophene phases are not only more resilient to chemical deterioration, but also harbor enhanced $T_{c}$ values compared to their monolayer counterparts, underscoring their substantial potential for the development of boron-based two-dimensional superconductors.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) boron has been predicted to exhibit various structural polymorphs and interesting physics, including superconductivity, ideal strength, negative Possion's ratio, and a higher thermal conductivity than graphene, etc. However, the difficulty in experimental synthesis of 2D boron has further reduced its exploration and applications. In this work we have used a crystal structure search method and first-principles calculations. We have proposed a scheme of "synthesize under high pressure and peel off at ambient conditions" to first predict a bulk phase of KB4, and then peel off free standing 2D boron from it. Based on electron-phonon coupling calculations, we estimated that 2D boron is an intrinsic superconductor with T-c = 17.9 K. In addition we found a strong anisotropy of the electron-phonon coupling strength in 2D boron, thus the superconductivity in 2D boron possesses a quasi-1D feature. Our proposed scheme for the synthesis of free standing 2D boron will stimulate further studies of superconductivity in low dimensional materials, both theoretically and experimentally.

Abstract:It is shown that bilayer phosphorene can be transformed from a direct-gap semiconductor to a BCS superconductor by intercalating Li atoms. For the Li-intercalated bilayer phosphorene, we find that the electron occupation of Li-derived band is small and superconductivity is intrinsic. With increasing the intercalation of Li atoms, both increased metallicity and strong electron-phonon coupling are favorable for the enhancement of superconductivity. The obtained electron-phonon coupling λ can be larger than 1 and the superconducting temperature Tc can be increased up to 16.5 K, suggesting that phosphorene may be a good candidate for a nanoscale superconductor.

Abstract:The discovery of superconductivity in Magnesium Diborate (MgB$_2$) has stimulated great interest in the search of new superconductors with similar lattice structures. Unlike cuprate or iron-based superconductors, MgB$_2$ is indisputably a phonon-mediated high temperature superconductor. The emergence of high temperature superconductivity in this material results from the strong coupling between the boron $\sigma$-bonding electrons around the Fermi level and the bond-stretching optical phonon modes. Here we show, based on the first-principles calculations, that Li$_2$B$_3$C is such a good candidate of superconductor whose superconducting transition temperature (T$_c$) might be even higher than MgB$_2$. Li$_2$B$_3$C consists of alternating graphene-like boron-carbon layers and boron-boron layers with intercalated lithium atoms between them. Similar to MgB$_2$, Li$_2$B$_3$C is inherently metallic and possesses two $\sigma$- and two $\pi$-electron bands around the Fermi energy. The superconducting pairs are glued predominately by the strong interaction between boron $\sigma$-bonding electrons and various optical phonon modes.

Abstract:Two-dimensional superconductors, especially the covalent metals such as borophene, have received significant attention due to their new fundamental physics, as well as potential applications. Furthermore, the bilayer borophene has recently ignited interest due to its high stability and versatile properties. Here, the mechanical and superconducting properties of bilayer-δ6 borophene are explored by means of first-principles computations and anisotropic Migdal–Eliashberg analytics. We find that the coexistence of strong covalent bonds and delocalized metallic bonds endows this structure with remarkable mechanical properties (maximum 2D-Young's modulus of ~570 N/m) and superconductivity with a critical temperature of ~20 K. Moreover, the superconducting critical temperature of this structure can be further boosted to ~46 K by applied strain, which is the highest value known among all borophenes or two-dimensional elemental materials.

Prediction of fully metallic σ-bonded boron framework induced high superconductivity above 100 K in thermodynamically stable Sr2B5 at 40 GPa

Abstract:Metal borides have been considered as potential high-temperature superconductors since the discovery of record-holding 39 K superconductivity in bulk MgB2. In this work, we identified a superconducting yet thermodynamically stable F43m Sr2B5 at 40 GPa with a unique covalent sp3-hybridized boron framework through extensive first-principles structure searches. Remarkably, solving the anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg equations resulted in a high superconducting critical temperature (Tc) around 100 K, exceeding the boiling point (77 K) of liquid nitrogen. Our in-depth analysis revealed that the high-temperature superconductivity mainly originates from the strong coupling between the metalized {\sigma}-bonded electronic bands and E phonon modes of boron atoms. Moreover, anharmonic phonon simulations suggest that F43m Sr2B5 might be recovered to ambient pressure. Our current findings provide a prototype structure with a full {\sigma}-bonded boron framework for the design of high-Tc superconducting borides that may expand to a broader variety of lightweight compounds.

Abstract:We use first-principles calculations to systematically investigate electronic, vibrational, and superconducting properties in borophenes (boron monolayer sheets). Remarkably, superconducting transition temperature T-c is a V-like function of hexagon hole density and has a similar tendency to the variations of the total energy and density of states at the Fermi level, which shows that the larger density of states at the Fermi level corresponds to the higher T-c. In consideration of substrate, the Ag(111) surfaces weaken the superconductivity in borophenes, which results in T-c(mu)*(-0.1) of about 5.2K in the buckled triangular sheet. As synthesis of borophenes was reported, superconducting boron sheets are feasible. Published by AIP Publishing.
Prediction of above $20$ K superconductivity of blue phosphorus bilayer with metal intercalations

Abstract:First-principles calculations predicted monolayer blue phosphorus to be an alternative two-dimensional allotrope of phosphorus, like the recently discovered monolayer black phosphorus. Due to its unique crystalline and electronic structure, blue phosphorus may be a promising candidate as a BCS-superconductor after proper intercalation. In this study, using first-principles calculations, the favorable intercalation sites for some alkali metals and alkaline earths have been identified for Blue-P bilayer and the stacking configuration of bilayer is changed. Then the blue phosphorus bilayer transforms from a semiconductor to a metal due to the charge transfer from metal to phosphorus. Own to the strong electron-phonon coupling, isotropic superconducting state is induced and the calculated transition temperatures are $20.4$, $20.1$, and $14.4$K for Li-, Na-, and Mg-intercaltion, respectively, which is superior to other predicted or experimentally observed two-dimensional BCS-superconductors.

Abstract:By first principles calculations, we predict that the recently prepared borophene is a pristine two-dimensional monolayer superconductor in which the superconductivity can be significantly enhanced by strain and charge carrier doping. The intrinsic metallic ground state with high density of states at Fermi energy and strong Fermi surface nesting lead to sizeable electron-phonon coupling, making the freestanding borophene superconduct with Tc close to 19.0 K. The tensile strain can increase the Tc to 27.4 K, while the hole doping can notably increase Tc to 34.8 K. The results indicate that the borophene grown on substrates with large lattice parameters or under photoexcitation can show enhanced superconductivity with Tc far above the liquid hydrogen temperature of 20.3 K, which will largely broaden the applications of such promising material.

Insight into Two-Dimensional Borophene: Five-Center Bond and Phonon-Mediated Superconductivity

Abstract:We report a previously unknown monolayer borophene allotrope and we call it super-B with a flat structure based on the ab initio calculations. It has good thermal, dynamical, and mechanical stability compared with many other typical borophenes. We find that super-B has a fascinating chemical bond environment consisting of standard sp, sp2 hybridizations, and delocalized five-center three-electron $\pi$ bond, called $\pi$(5c-3e). This particular electronic structure plays a pivotal role in stabilizing the super-B chemically. By extra doping, super-B can be transformed into a Dirac material from pristine metal. Like graphene, it can also sustain tensile strain smaller than 24%, indicating superior flexibility. Moreover, due to the small atomic mass and large density of states at the Fermi level, super-B has the highest critical temperature Tc of 25.3 K in single-element superconductors at ambient conditions. We attribute this high Tc of super-B to the giant anharmonicity of two linear acoustic phonon branches and an unusually low optic phonon mode. These predictions provide new insight into the chemical nature of low dimensional boron nanostructures and highlight the potential applications of designing flexible devices and high Tc superconductors.

Abstract:Borophene has several configurations and shows many unique properties, such as the Dirac point, the negative Poisson's ratio, inherent metallicity, but it is oxidized easily. Recently, ordered chemical modulation of β12 borophene grown on the Ag(111) substrate by hydrogenation was experimentally reported, and three configurations of β12 borophane were proposed by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy [ Science 371 , 1143 (2021)]. In this paper, using first-principles calculations, we study seven configurations of hydrogen atoms adsorbed on freestanding β12 borophene not only including the three adsorption structures in above literature, but also other four possible configurations with one or two hydrogen atoms adsorbed on it per unit cell. Among the seven configurations, we predict two stable β12 borophanes. They possess the dynamic stability and different anisotropic metallicity from pristine β12 borophene and show superconductivity. Based on the Eliashberg equation, the calculated electron-phonon coupling strength are about 0.82 and 0.52, and their superconducting transition temperature Tc are 20.51 and 5.90 K, respectively. Abstract:A new two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic semiconducting boron structure, named as M-B28, is predicted using ab initio evolutionary structure searching. First-principles calculations show that M-B28 has a lower energy than other 2D magnetic boron structures and is dynamically stable. The unpaired electrons from the caps of B26 clusters lead to magnetism in M-B28, while making its highest valence band flat and isolated. The Néel temperature and mechanical properties of M-B28 are evaluated with the Ising model and strain-stress method, respectively, revealing a transition temperature of 32 K and the ideal strengths of 43.7 N/m along x direction and 38.5 N/m along y direction.

Abstract:Pursuit of superconductivity in light-element systems at ambient pressure is of great experimental and theoretical interest. In this work, we combine a machine learning (ML) method with first-principles calculations to efficiently search for the energetically favorable ternary Ca-B-C compounds. Three new layered borocarbides (stable CaBC5 and metastable Ca2BC11 and CaB3C3) are predicted to be phonon-mediated superconductors at ambient pressure. The hexagonal CaB3C3 possesses the highest Tc of 26.05 K among the three compounds. The {\sigma}-bonging bands around the Fermi level account for the large electron-phonon coupling ({\lambda} = 0.980) of hexagonal CaB3C3. The ML-guided approach opens up a way for greatly accelerating the discovery of new high-Tc superconductors.
