What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the issue of achieving efficient multiphoton ultraviolet (UV) upconversion luminescence under low-power near-infrared (NIR) excitation conditions. Specifically, the paper proposes a mechanistic strategy to achieve this goal by spatially confining lanthanide emitters entirely within the sensitizing lattice. This approach aims to increase the local excitation energy density and accelerate the population of intermediate energy levels as well as higher-energy UV emission levels, thereby promoting an efficient multiphoton UV upconversion process. The paper also explores how to achieve 980/808 nm dual-wavelength responsive UV upconversion by introducing Nd^3+ ions into the inert shell layer, and how to utilize commercial 940 nm near-infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for excitation to achieve UV upconversion, thereby extending the spectral response range and improving solar photocatalytic efficiency. Additionally, the study demonstrates the potential of these novel upconversion nanoparticles in composite materials with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C_3N_4) for photocatalytic applications, particularly by converting NIR photons into UV light to extend the spectral response range of photocatalysts, thus accelerating the effective utilization of solar energy.
