Abstract:The annotation of the sequences that encode enzymes to their functions is a significant step towards better understanding of the world's biological systems. This is precisely the body of knowledge that Biocatalysis has been building throughout the 20(th) century on a case-by-case basis. Candidate technologies and methodologies to accomplish this goal are largely available, yet they have not been brought into practice for this purpose. Combining the knowledge, technologies, and methodologies for this renewed purpose constitutes in fact, a new distinctive science which rests on the foundation of biocatalysis. We henceforth shall refer to it as Genomic Chemistry, or Genochemistry in short, the study of chemistry based on genomic information, resulting from numerous emerging disciplines in the 'omics' cascade. Genochemistry is expected to supply more detailed and descriptive information in order to reveal the relationships of enzymes and their catalytic function and annotation of the genomic sequences. Unlike other 'omics' investigations, Genochemistry cannot be conducted by any single technology platform. It requires the building of databases on the basis of experimental data and the use of computational methods as well as bioinformatics tools. In this article, we provide a discussion of a framework, a guideline, and the problems that Genochemistry can tackle from distilled information and amassed literatures, with emphasis on the potentially useful technologies.

Abstract:Analytical chemistry is a broad area of science comprised of many sub-disciplines. Although each sub-discipline has its own dominant trends, one trend is common to all of them: greenness and sustainability. Efforts to develop more ecological and environmentally friendly methods have been ongoing for over a decade with initial attempts largely focusing on limiting the necessary volume of solvents required and eliminating the use of toxic solvents. Over time, the miniaturization of analytical devices gained popularity as a way of not only reducing chemical usage, but also enabling analyses using smaller sample volumes and more “remote” applications (e.g., on-site sampling and analysis). Of course, miniaturization poses numerous challenges for researchers, for instance, in relation to the method’s sensitivity and reproducibility. Developments in the design of detection systems have largely helped to mitigate these issues, but they also often restrict the potential for on-site analysis. Therefore, attempts have been made to improve analysis throughout the entire analytical process, from sampling through sample preparation and instrumental analysis to data handling. Furthermore, clinical chemistry labs must adhere to certain regulations and use certified protocols and materials, which precludes the rapid implementation of solutions developed in research labs. What are the obstacles in translating such innovations to practical applications, and what inventions can make a difference in the future? The answers to these two questions define the trends in analytical chemistry in the field of medical analysis.

Synthetic biology is involved in many aspects of human life, such as processing information, manipulating chemicals, providing food, fabricating materials and structures, producing energy, as well as maintaining and enhancing human health and our environment. Advances in omics technologies have profound effects on synthetic biology research, pushing synthetic biology research toward rational data-driven and model-driven science. The ultimate goals of synthetic biology are to design and build engineered biological systems. Furthermore, synthetic biology has a broad area for applications, including sustainable food, sustainable energy, sustainable environment, etc. In this chapter, we will introduce the history, techniques, applications, and future challenges of synthetic biology.

Abstract:Pharmaceutical analysis is a discipline based on chemical, physical, biological, and information technologies. At present, biotechnological analysis is a short branch in pharmaceutical analysis; however, bioanalysis is the basis and an important part of medicine. Biotechnological approaches can provide information on biological activity and even clinical efficacy and safety, which are important characteristics of drug quality. Because of their advantages in reflecting the overall biological effects or functions of drugs and providing visual and intuitive results, some biotechnological analysis methods have been gradually applied to pharmaceutical analysis from raw material to manufacturing and final product analysis, including DNA super-barcoding, DNA-based rapid detection, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification, hyperspectral imaging combined with artificial intelligence, 3D biologically printed organoids, omics-based artificial intelligence, microfluidic chips, organ-on-a-chip, signal transduction pathway-related reporter gene assays, and the zebrafish thrombosis model. The applications of these emerging biotechniques in pharmaceutical analysis have been discussed in this review.

Abstract:Synthetic biology is a nascent field that emerged in earnest only around the turn of the millennium. It aims to engineer new biological systems and impart new biological functionality, often through genetic modifications. The design and construction of new biological systems is a complex, multistep process, requiring multidisciplinary collaborative efforts from "fusion" scientists who have formal training in computer science or engineering, as well as hands-on biological expertise. The public has high expectations for synthetic biology and eagerly anticipates the development of solutions to the major challenges facing humanity. This article discusses laboratory practices and the conduct of research in synthetic biology. It argues that the fusion science approach, which integrates biology with computer science and engineering best practices, including standardization, process optimization, computer-aided design and laboratory automation, miniaturization, and systematic management, will increase the predictability and reproducibility of experiments and lead to breakthroughs in the construction of new biological systems. The article also discusses several successful fusion projects, including the development of software tools for DNA construction design automation, recursive DNA construction, and the development of integrated microfluidics systems.

Abstract:The ability to manipulate living organisms is at the heart of a range of emerging technologies that serve to address important and current problems in environment, energy, and health. However, with all its complexity and interconnectivity, biology has for many years been recalcitrant to engineering manipulations. The recent advances in synthesis, analysis, and modeling methods have finally provided the tools necessary to manipulate living systems in meaningful ways and have led to the coining of a field named synthetic biology. The scope of synthetic biology is as complicated as life itself-encompassing many branches of science and across many scales of application. New DNA synthesis and assembly techniques have made routine customization of very large DNA molecules. This in turn has allowed the incorporation of multiple genes and pathways. By coupling these with techniques that allow for the modeling and design of protein functions, scientists have now gained the tools to create completely novel biological machineries. Even the ultimate biological machinery-a self-replicating organism-is being pursued at this moment. Annual Review of Analytical Chemistry

Abstract:Analytical chemistry is a fast-paced field with frequent introduction of new techniques via research labs; however, incorporation of new techniques into academic curricula lags their adoption in research and industry. This review describes the recent educational literature on microfluidics, microcontrollers, and chemometrics in the undergraduate analytical chemistry curriculum. Each section highlights opportunities for nonexpert faculty to get started with these techniques and more advanced implementations suitable for experienced practitioners. While the addition of new topics to any curriculum brings some opportunity costs, student engagement with cutting edge techniques brings many benefits, including enhanced preparation for graduate school and professional careers and development of transferable skills, such as coding. Formal assessment of student outcomes is encouraged to promote broader adoption of these techniques. Trends in Biotechnology

Abstract:This article examines the role of computation and quantitative methods in modern biomedical research to identify emerging scientific, technical, policy and organizational trends. It identifies common concerns and practices in the emerging community of computationally-oriented bio-scientists by reviewing a national symposium, Digital Biology: the Emerging Paradigm, held at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, November 6th and 7th 2003. This meeting showed how biomedical computing promises scientific breakthroughs that will yield significant health benefits. Three key areas that define the emerging discipline of digital biology are: scientific data integration, multi-scale modeling and networked science. Each area faces unique technical challenges and information policy issues that must be addressed as the field matures. Here we summarize the emergent challenges and offer suggestions to academia, industry and government on how best to expand the role of computation in their scientific activities.

Abstract:The topic synthetic biology appears still as an 'empty basket to be filled'. However, there is already plenty of claims and visions, as well as convincing research strategies about the theme of synthetic biology. First of all, synthetic biology seems to be about the engineering of biology - about bottom-up and top-down approaches, compromising complexity versus stability of artificial architectures, relevant in biology. Synthetic biology accounts for heterogeneous approaches towards minimal and even artificial life, the engineering of biochemical pathways on the organismic level, the modelling of molecular processes and finally, the combination of synthetic with nature-derived materials and architectural concepts, such as a cellular membrane. Still, synthetic biology is a discipline, which embraces interdisciplinary attempts in order to have a profound, scientific base to enable the re-design of nature and to compose architectures and processes with man-made matter. We like to give an overview about the developments in the field of synthetic biology, regarding polymer-based analogs of cellular membranes and what questions can be answered by applying synthetic polymer science towards the smallest unit in life, namely a cell.

Abstract:Biology is the science of nature’s life. It regards living things in one cell or separate cells (e.g. creatures, plants, and micro-organisms). Natural sciences include numerous areas, including the study and characterization of creatures by subatomic components in cells. It also shows how the collaboration between the ecosystems is determined by species formed in cells. To enhance their exhibition at the characterized activities, sciences can be covered by various sub-topics such as drugs, organic chemistry, and brain study. Natural structures consist of various animals to work together in executing such orders. These systems will possibly boost key developments in human well-being and environmental management. For example, software engineering, bioinformatics, and materials science may provide different logical instructions on how natural structures can change under a variety of conditions after some time. These systems have qualified answers for the most natural and medical treatment frameworks. Through using broad knowledge analysis and datasets, the exhibition of the scientific frameworks in the plant, bioinformatics, and medical services can be enhanced. While there still exists a contrast to the seriousness of the word in large quantities of information, we understand the data of a huge volume and a wide variety of items, which are constantly refreshed and placed in many outlets, as well as extraordinary developments in the skill, movement, handling, and investigation of this information. This chapter emphasizes on applications of big data tools and techniques in bioinformatics. we also addressed big data issues and challenges in the field of bioinformatics.

Abstract:Recent progress in biology, medical science, bioinformatics, and biotechnology has led to the accumulation of tremendous amounts of biodata that demands in-depth analysis. On the other hand, recent progress in data mining research has led to the development of numerous efficient and scalable methods for mining interesting patterns in large databases. The question becomes how to bridge the two fields, data mining and bioinformatics, for successful mining of biological data. In this chapter, we present an overview of the data mining methods that help biodata analysis. Moreover, we outline some research problems that may motivate the further development of data mining tools for the analysis of various kinds of biological data.

Abstract:The continuing pursuit for a healthy life has led to the urgent need for on-site analysis. In response to the urgent needs of on-site analysis, we propose a novel concept, called lab at home (LAH), for building automated and integrated total analysis systems to perform chemical and biological testing at home. It represents an emerging research area with broad prospects that has not yet attracted sufficient attention. Abstract:Spatial biology is a rapidly developing field which enables the visualization of protein and transcriptomic data while preserving tissue context and architecture. Initially used in discovery, there is growing promise for translational and diagnostic assay developments. Immediate applications are in precision medicine, such as being able to match patients to optimal therapies through better understanding the tumor microenvironment. However, it also has ramifications for many other disciplines (e.g. immunology, cancer, infectious disease and digital pathology). With increasingly massive data sets being generated, data storage, curation, analysis and sharing require more computational approaches and artificial intelligence-powered tools to fully utilize spatial tools. Here, we discuss spatial biology as an important convergent science approach to tackling complex global challenges in areas such as health.
