Abstract:Motivated by the neutron decay anomaly, we reconsider the neutron decay model , where the new species plays the role of dark matter. We precisely compute the rate finding that fitting the anomaly compatibly with all bounds needs at least two "generations" of the particle.

Abstract:A bstract We add to the Standard Model a new fermion χ with minimal baryon number 1/3. Neutron decay n → χχχ into non-relativistic χ can account for the neutron decay anomaly, compatibly with bounds from neutron stars. χ can be Dark Matter, and its cosmological abundance can be generated by freeze-in dominated at T ∼ m n . The associated processes n → χχχγ , hydrogen decay H → χχχν ( γ ) and DM-induced neutron disappearance n → χχ ( γ ) have rates below experimental bounds and can be of interest for future experiments.

Abstract:The discrepancies in different measurements of the lifetime of isolated neutrons could be resolved by considering an extra neutron decay channel into dark matter, with a branching ratio of the order of $O(1$\%). Although the decay channel into a dark fermion $\chi$ plus visible matter has been already experimentally excluded, a dark decay with either a scalar or dark photon remains still a possibility. In particular, a model with a fermion mass $m_\chi\approx 1$ GeV and a scalar $m_\phi \approx O(\rm{MeV})$ could provide not only the required branching ratio to explain the anomaly but also a good dark matter (DM) candidate with the right thermal abundance today. Although the interaction DM-neutron will affect the formation of neutron stars, the combined effect of the dark matter self-interactions mediated by the light scalar and an effective repulsive interaction with the neutrons induced by the scalar-Higgs coupling would allow heavy enough neutron stars. The combined constraints from neutron lifetime, dark matter abundance, neutron star and Higgs physics, and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, restrict the light scalar mass to the range $2 m_e < m_\phi < 2 m_e + 0.0375$ MeV.

Abstract:We discuss a simple theory for neutrino masses where the total lepton number is a local gauge symmetry spontaneously broken below the multi-TeV scale. In this context, the neutrino masses are generated through the canonical seesaw mechanism and a Majorana dark matter candidate is predicted from anomaly cancellation. We discuss in great detail the dark matter annihilation channels and find out the upper bound on the symmetry breaking scale using the cosmological bounds on the relic density. Since in this context the dark matter candidate has suppressed couplings to the Standard Model quarks, one can satisfy the direct detection bounds even if the dark matter mass is close to the electroweak scale. This theory predicts a light pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson (the Majoron) associated to the mechanism of neutrino mass. We discuss briefly the properties of the Majoron and the impact of the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis bounds.

Dark Matter Interpretation of Neutron Multiplicity Anomalies

Abstract:Subterrestrial neutron spectra show weak but consistent anomalies at multiplicities ~100 and above [1-3]. The data of the available measurements are of low statistical significance [4] but indicate an excess of events not correlated with the muon flux. The origin of the anomalies remains ambiguous but could be a signature of WIMP annihilation-like interaction with a Pb target. In this paper, we outline a model consistent with this hypothesis, the extended Standard Model (SM) approach called the Radiation Gauge Model (RGM) [5]. The RGM identifies scalar neutrino-antineutrino wave function components of WIMP Dark Matter (DM) responsible for the weak interaction leading to annihilation with ordinary matter. The model assigns neutrino-nucleon(target) charged current (CC) transitions to the observed anomalies. If the existence of the anomalies is confirmed and the model interpretation is positively verified, this will be the first terrestrial indirect detection of DM.

Abstract:Discrepancies from in-beam and in-bottle type experiments measuring the neutron lifetime are on the 4$\sigma$ standard deviation level. In a recent publication Fornal and Grinstein proposed that the puzzle could be solved if the neutron would decay on the one percent level via a dark decay mode, one possible branch being $n \rightarrow \chi + e^+ e^-$. With data from the \perkeoII experiment we set limits on the branching fraction and exclude a one percent contribution for $95\,\%$ of the allowed mass range for the dark matter particle.

Abstract:It is possible that the strongest interactions between dark matter and the Standard Model occur via the neutrino sector. Unlike gamma rays and charged particles, neutrinos provide a unique avenue to probe for astrophysical sources of dark matter, since they arrive unimpeded and undeflected from their sources. Previously, we reported on annihilations of dark matter to neutrinos; here, we review constraints on the decay of dark matter into neutrinos over a range of dark matter masses from MeV to ZeV, compiling previously reported limits, exploring new electroweak corrections and computing constraints where none have been computed before. We examine the expected contributions to the neutrino flux at current and upcoming neutrino experiments as well as photons from electroweak emission expected at gamma-ray telescopes, leading to constraints on the dark matter decay lifetime, which ranges from $\tau \sim 1.2\times10^{21}$ s at 10~MeV to $1.5\times10^{29}$~s at 1~PeV.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the observation of neutron stars with masses greater than one solar mass places severe demands on any exotic neutron decay mode that could explain the discrepancy between beam and bottle measurements of the neutron lifetime. If the neutron can decay to a stable, feebly-interacting dark fermion, the maximum possible mass of a neutron star is 0.7 solar masses, while all well-measured neutron star masses exceed one solar mass. The survival of $2 M_\odot$ neutron stars therefore indicates that any explanation beyond the Standard Model for the neutron lifetime puzzle requires dark matter to be part of a multi-particle dark sector with highly constrained interactions.

Abstract:It was recently proposed that the disagreement in the experimental measurements of the lifetime of the neutron might be eradicated if the neutron decays to particles responsible for the dark matter in the Universe. In this paper we construct a proto- type self-interacting dark matter model which, apart from reproducing the correct relic abundance, resolves all small-scale problems of the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm. The theory is compatible with all present cosmological observations and astrophysical bounds.

Abstract:We propose a Majoron-like extension of the Standard Model with an extra global $U(1)_X$-symmetry where neutrino masses are generated through an inverse seesaw mechanism at the 1-loop level. In contrast to the tree-level inverse seesaw, our framework contains dark matter (DM) candidates stabilized by a residual $\mathcal{Z}_2$-symmetry surviving spontaneous breaking of the $U(1)_X$-group. We explore the case in which the DM is a Majorana fermion. Furthermore, we provide parameter space regions allowed by current experimental constraints coming from the dark matter relic abundance, (in)direct detection, and charged lepton flavor violation.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the Standard Model (SM) scalar sector with scalar leptoquarks (LQ) as a portal to the dark sector to resolve some observational anomalies simultaneously. We introduce LQ coupling to scalar dark matter (DM) to suggest an exotic decay channel for the neutron into scalar DM and an SM anti-neutrino. If the branching ratio of this new neutron decay channel is $1\%$, a long-standing discrepancy in the measured neutron lifetime between two different experimental methods, bottle and beam experiments, can be solved. The mass of the scalar DM produced from neutron decay should be in a narrow range and as a result, its production in the early universe is challenging. We discuss that the freeze-in mechanism can produce this scalar DM in the early universe with the correct relic abundance. Then we show that the model can explain other SM anomalies like the muon $(g-2)$, and $R_{D^{(*)}}$ anomaly simultaneously.

Abstract:Models of inelastic (or pseudo-Dirac) dark matter commonly assume an accidental symmetry between the left-handed and right-handed mass terms in order to suppress diagonal couplings. We point out that this symmetry is unnecessary, because for Majorana fermions the diagonal couplings are not strongly constrained. Removing the requirement of such an ad-hoc symmetry instead relaxes the relic density constraint due to additional annihilation modes. We consider a simple UV-complete model realising this setup and study constraints from (in)direct detection, beam dump experiments and colliders. We identify two viable mass regions for the dark matter mass, around a few hundred MeV and around a few GeV, respectively. The former region will be fully tested by near-future analyses of NA64 and Belle II data, while the latter turns out to be challenging to explore even with future experiments.

Dark matter admixed neutron stars with a realistic nuclear equation of state from chiral nuclear interactions

Abstract:We study the effects of dark matter on the structural properties of neutron stars. In particular we investigate how the presence of a dark matter component influences the mass-radius relation, the value of the maximum mass of a neutron star and others stellar properties. To model ordinary matter we use a state-of-the-art equation of state of $\beta$-stable nuclear matter obtained using the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock quantum many-body approach starting from two-body and three-body nuclear interactions derived from chiral effective field theory. The dark matter component of the star is modeled as a non-self-annihilating system of spin $1/2$ fermions and its equation of state as an ideal relativistic Fermi gas. The equilibrium configurations of these dark matter admixed neutron stars (DANS) are calculated by solving a generalization of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations to the case where the system consists of two perfect fluids interacting solely through gravity. We find that, depending on the dark matter particle mass $m_\chi$, one can have somehow opposite effects on the stellar properties. In the case $m_\chi = 1\, \mathrm{GeV}$, the stellar gravitational maximum mass $M_{max}$ decreases, whereas in the case $m_\chi = 0.1\, \mathrm{GeV}$, $M_{max}$ increases with respect to the maximum mass of ordinary neutron stars. We also show that the presence of dark matter has indirect sizeable effect on the proton fraction in the ordinary matter fluid and, in the case $m_\chi = 1\, \mathrm{GeV}$, results in a decrease of the threshold gravitational mass $M_{tot}^{durca}$ for having direct URCA processes and fast stellar cooling. Finally we study the stability of dark matter admixed neutron stars with respect to radial perturbations.

We first assess the viability of the neutron decay hypothesis suggested by Fornal and Grinstein within neutrons tars, in terms of the equation of state and compatibility with observed properties. Abstract:We investigate an interesting correlation among dark matter phenomenology, neutrino mass generation and GUT baryogenesis, based on the scotogenic model. The model contains additional right-handed neutrinos $N$ and a second Higgs doublet $\Phi$, both of which are odd under an imposed $Z_2$ symmetry. The neutral component of $\Phi$, i.e. the lightest of the $Z_2$-odd particles, is the dark matter candidate. Due to a Yukawa coupling involving $\Phi$, $N$ and the Standard Model leptons, the lepton asymmetry is converted into the dark matter asymmetry so that a non-vanishing $B-L$ asymmetry can arise from $(B-L)$-conserving GUT baryogenesis, leading to a nonzero baryon asymmetry after the sphalerons decouple. On the other hand, $\Phi$ can also generate neutrino masses radiatively. In other words, the existence of $\Phi$ as the dark matter candidate resuscitates GUT baryogenesis and realizes neutrino masses.

Abstract:In the minimal Scotogenic model with fermionic dark matter, the neutrino Yukawa matrix is fine-tuned to satisfy current bounds on $\mu \rightarrow e \gamma$ while producing dark matter through thermal freezeout. One way to avoid this bound is to open a new annihilation channel for DM with a scalar field that breaks the lepton number spontaneously. This introduces a physical Goldstone boson $a$, which can constitute a light relic and opens up the lepton flavor violating channel $\mu\rightarrow e a$. In this work, we introduce a model that contains the new annihilation channel for fermionic dark matter but avoids the introduction of the Goldstone by using a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_4$ instead of a continuous symmetry. In this way, cosmological constraints on the light relic and experimental limits on lepton flavor violating decays to the Goldstone are avoided. We analyze the experimental viability of the model, identifying the region of parameter space where lepton flavor violating constraints are not saturated, DM has the correct relic density, and DM direct detection experiments are sensitive to the DM candidate.

Abstract:We study the phenomenology of a $U_X(1)$ extension of the Standard Model where the SM particles are not charged under the new abelian group. The Green-Schwarz mechanism insures that the model is anomaly free. The erstwhile invisible dark gauge field $X$, even if produced with difficulty at the LHC has however a clear signature in gamma-ray telescopes. We investigate what BSM scale (which can be interpreted as a low-energy string scale) would be reachable by the FERMI/GLAST telescope after 5 years of running and show that a 1 TeV scale can be testable, which is highly competitive with the LHC.
Exploring robust correlations between fermionic dark matter model parameters and neutron star properties: A two-fluid perspective

Abstract:We investigate the probable existence of dark matter in the interior of neutron stars. Despite the current state of knowledge, the observational properties of neutron stars have not definitively ruled out the possibility of dark matter. Our research endeavors to shed light on this intriguing mystery by examining how certain neutron star properties, including mass, radius, and tidal deformability, might serve as constraints for the dark matter model. In our investigation, we adopt a two-fluid approach to calculate the properties of neutron stars. For the nuclear matter equation-of-state (EOS), we employ several realistic EOS derived from the relativistic mean field model (RMF), each exhibiting varying stiffness and composition. In parallel, we look into the dark matter EOS, considering fermionic matter with repulsive interaction described by a relativistic mean field Lagrangian. A reasonable range of parameters is sampled meticulously. Our study primarily focuses on exploring correlations between the dark matter model parameters and different neutron star properties using a rich set of EOSs. Interestingly, our results reveal a promising correlation between the dark matter model parameters and stellar properties, particularly when we ignore the uncertainties in the nuclear matter EOS. However, when introducing uncertainties in the nuclear sector, the correlation weakens, suggesting that the task of conclusively constraining any particular dark matter model might be challenging using global properties alone, such as mass, radius, and tidal deformability. Notably, we find that dark-matter admixed stars tend to have higher central baryonic density, potentially allowing for non-nucleonic degrees of freedom or direct Urca processes in stars with lower masses. There is also a tantalizing hint regarding the detection of stars with the same mass but different surface temperatures, which may indicate the presence of dark matter. With our robust and extensive dataset, we delve deeper and demonstrate that even in the presence of dark matter, the semiuniversal C-Love relation remains intact. Dark Matter in the High-Scale Seesaw Leptogenesis Paradigm

Abstract:The seesaw mechanism with three heavy Majorana right-handed neutrinos provides an elegant explanation for neutrino masses and, combined with leptogenesis, can generate the baryon asymmetry of the universe (BAU). Naturally embedded in a Grand Unified Theory, this framework stands as one of the best-motivated extensions beyond the Standard Model. However, it does not account for dark matter (DM). In this paper, we propose a minimal extension that introduces a dark sector with a singlet Majorana fermion (as the DM candidate) and a complex scalar singlet. The heavy right-handed neutrinos serve multiple roles: i) explaining the small masses of active neutrinos via the seesaw mechanism, ii) generating the BAU through leptogenesis, and iii) producing the cold DM density through their decays. Interestingly, the model also predicts a subdominant DM component from late scalar decays, which in some cases may be hot or warm at the onset of structure formation, as well as an equal number of non-thermal neutrinos. These components leave distinct signatures in various cosmological observables. Furthermore, electromagnetic energy injection from scalar decays alter predictions from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and induce spectral distortions in the Cosmic Microwave Background black-body spectrum. Upcoming experiments, such as the Primordial Inflation Explorer (PIXIE), could probe a significant portion of the parameter space of this extended high-scale seesaw scenario.
