The equations are proved to generate correct canonical equilibrium distributions. The corresponding reversible and symplectic integrator is also given in this paper.

Abstract:The paper develops an approximate solution by means of an averaging method to the system of Euler's equations with additional perturbation terms for a nearly dynamically spherical rigid body containing a viscoelastic element. The averaging method is used. The asymptotic approach permits to obtain some qualitative results and to describe evolution of angular motion using simplified averaged equations and numerical solution. The main objective of this paper is to extend the previous results for the problem of motion about a center of mass of a rigid body under the influence of small internal torque (cavity filled with a fluid of high viscosity) or external torques (resistive medium, constant body-fixed torque). This paper can be considered as mainstreaming of previous works. The advantage of this paper is in receiving the original asymptotic and numerical calculations, as well as solutions that describe the evolution of motion a rigid body with a moving mass over an infinite time interval with an asymptotically small error. The paper presents a contribution in several areas, partially in the problems of spacecraft and satellite motion, and the activities of crew members about the vehicles. The importance of the results is in the progress of moving mass control, and in the motion of spinning projectiles.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a coordinate method for determining the position of molecular bodies in space that does not use either Euler angles or Hamilton quaternions. The capabilities of the developed high-precision computational algorithm are demonstrated using the example of the Louis Poinsot instability. The change in the nature of this instability when a molecular magnetically susceptible body is exposed to an external magnetic field is also analyzed.

Abstract:The fundamental equation describing the rotational dynamics of a rigid body is ${\vec \tau}=d{\vec L} / dt$ which is a straightforward consequence of the Newton's second law of motion and is only valid in an inertial coordinate system. While this equation is written down by an inertial observer, for practical purposes, it is worked out within a non-inertial ancillary coordinate system which is typically fixed in the rigid body. This results in the famous Euler equation for rotation of the rigid bodies. We show that it is also possible to describe the rotational dynamics of a rigid body from the point of view of a non-inertial observer (rotating with the ancillary coordinate system fixed in the rigid body), provided that the non-inertial torques are taken into account. We explicitly calculate the non-inertial torques and express them in terms of physical characteristics of the rigid body. We show that the resulting dynamical equations exactly recover the Euler equation.

Abstract:Intrinsic thermal fluctuations within a real solid challenge the rigid body assumption that is central to Euler's equations for the motion of a free body. Recently, we have introduced a dissipative and stochastic version of Euler's equations in a thermodynamically consistent way (European Journal of Mechanics - A/Solids 103, 105184 (2024)). This framework describes the evolution of both orientation and shape of a free body, incorporating internal thermal fluctuations and their concomitant dissipative mechanisms. In the present work, we demonstrate that, in the absence of angular momentum, the theory predicts that principal axis unit vectors of a body undergo an anisotropic Brownian motion on the unit sphere, with the anisotropy arising from the body's varying moments of inertia. The resulting equilibrium time correlation function of the principal eigenvectors decays exponentially. This theoretical prediction is confirmed in molecular dynamics simulations of small bodies. The comparison of theory and equilibrium MD simulations allow us to measure the orientational diffusion tensor. We then use this information in the Stochastic Dissipative Euler's Equations, to describe a non-equilibrium situation of a body spinning around the unstable intermediate axis. The agreement between theory and simulations is excellent, offering a validation of the theoretical framework.

Stability of Permanent Rotations and Long-Time Behavior of Inertial Motions of a Rigid Body with an Interior Liquid-Filled Cavity

Abstract:A rigid body, with an interior cavity entirely filled with a Navier-Stokes liquid, moves in absence of external torques relative to the center of mass of the coupled system body-liquid (inertial motions). The only steady-state motions allowed are then those where the system, as a whole rigid body, rotates uniformly around one of the central axes of inertia (permanent rotations). Objective of this article is two-fold. On the one hand, we provide sufficient conditions for the asymptotic, exponential stability of permanent rotations, as well as for their instability. On the other hand, we study the asymptotic behavior of the generic motion in the class of weak solutions and show that there exists a time $t_0$ after that all such solutions must decay exponentially fast to a permanent rotation. This result provides a {\em full} and rigorous explanation of Zhukovsky's conjecture, and explains, likewise, other interesting phenomena that are observed in both lab and numerical experiments.

Manifestation of nonequilibrium initial conditions in molecular rotation: the generalized J-diffusion model

Abstract:In order to adequately describe molecular rotation far from equilibrium, we have generalized the J-diffusion model by allowing the rotational relaxation rate to be angular momentum dependent. The calculated nonequilibrium rotational correlation functions (CFs) are shown to decay much slower than their equilibrium counterparts, and orientational CFs of hot molecules exhibit coherent behavior, which persists for several rotational periods. As distinct from the results of standard theories, rotational and orientational CFs are found to dependent strongly on the nonequilibrium preparation of the molecular ensemble. We predict the Arrhenius energy dependence of rotational relaxation times and violation of the Hubbard relations for orientational relaxation times. The standard and generalized J-diffusion models are shown to be almost indistinguishable under equilibrium conditions. Far from equilibrium, their predictions may differ dramatically.

Abstract:In this two-part study, we investigate the motion of rigid, active objects in shear Stokes flow, focusing on bodies that induce rapid rotation as part of their activity. In Part 2, we derive and analyse governing equations for rapidly spinning complex-shaped particles - general helicoidal objects with chirality. Using the multiscale framework we develop in Part 1 (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2301.11311" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2301.11311">arXiv:2301.11311</a>), we systematically derive emergent equations of motion for the angular and translational dynamics of these chiral spinning objects. We show that the emergent dynamics due to rapid rotation can be described by effective generalised Jeffery's equations, which differ from the classic versions via the inclusion of additional terms that account for chirality and other asymmetries. Furthermore, we use our analytic results to characterise and quantify the explicit effect of rotation on the effective hydrodynamic shape of the chiral objects, significantly expanding the scope of Jeffery's seminal study.

Abstract:It is well known that the equations governing the motion of a freely-rotating rigid body possess an exact analytical solution, involving Jacobi's elliptic functions. Andoyer (1923) and Deprit (1967) have shown that the problem may be very usefully reduced to a one-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian system. When two of the body's principal moments of inertia are very nearly equal, the Hamiltonian system has the same form as the Ideal Resonance Problem. In earlier publications (Jupp, 1969, 1972, 1973), the author has constructed formal power-series solutions of the latter problem.In this article, the general solution of the Ideal Resonance Problem is employed to formulate a second-order formal series solution of the problem of a freely-rotating rigid body which has two of its principal moments of inertia differing by a small quantity. This solution is firstly expressed in terms of the mean elements, and then in terms of the initial conditions. The latter solution is global in nature being applicable over the whole phase plane. It is demonstrated that the exact solution and the second-order formal series solution, written in terms of the initial conditions, differ by terms of at most third order in the small parameter, over the whole domain of possible motions. This serves as an important check on the general results published in the earlier articles.

Abstract:We use the Chapman-Enskog method to derive the Smoluchowski equation from the Kramers equation in a high friction limit. We consider two main extensions of this problem: we take into account a uniform rotation of the background medium and we consider a generalized class of Kramers equations associated with generalized free energy functionals. We mention applications of these results to systems with long-range interactions (self-gravitating systems, 2D vortices, bacterial populations,...). In that case, the Smoluchowski equation is non-local. In the limit of short-range interactions, it reduces to a generalized form of the Cahn-Hilliard equation. These equations are associated with an effective generalized thermodynamical formalism.

Abstract:The motion of a rigid body is described in Classical Mechanics with the venerable Euler's equations which are based on the assumption that the relative distances among the constituent particles are fixed in time. Real bodies, however, cannot satisfy this property, as a consequence of thermal fluctuations. We generalize Euler's equations for a free body in order to describe dissipative and thermal fluctuation effects in a thermodynamically consistent way. The origin of these effects is internal, i.e. not due to an external thermal bath. The stochastic differential equations governing the orientation and central moments of the body are derived from first principles through the theory of coarse-graining. Within this theory, Euler's equations emerge as the reversible part of the dynamics. For the irreversible part, we identify two distinct dissipative mechanisms; one associated with diffusion of the orientation, whose origin lies in the difference between the spin velocity and the angular velocity, and one associated with the damping of dilations, i.e. inelasticity. We show that a deformable body with zero angular momentum will explore uniformly, through thermal fluctuations, all possible orientations. When the body spins, the equations describe the evolution towards the alignment of the body's major principal axis with the angular momentum vector. In this alignment process, the body increases its temperature. We demonstrate that the origin of the alignment process is not inelasticity but rather orientational diffusion. The theory also predicts the equilibrium shape of a spinning body.

A Rotational/Roto-translational Constraint Method for Condensed Matter

Abstract:In condensed matter physics, particularly in perovskite materials, the rotational motion of molecules and ions is associated with important issues such as ion conduction mechanism. Constrained Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations offer a means to separate translational, vibrational, and rotational motions, enabling the independent study of their effects. In this study, we introduce a rotational and roto-translational constraint algorithm based on the Velocity Verlet integrator, which has been implemented into a homebrew version of the CP2K package. The MD results show that our program can selectively constrain the molecules and ions in the system and support long-time MD runs. The algorithm can help the future study of important rotation related dynamic problems in condensed matter systems.

Abstract:The observed behaviour of passive objects in simple flows can be surprisingly intricate, and is complicated further by object activity. Inspired by the motility of bacterial swimmers, in this two-part study we examine the three-dimensional motion of rigid active particles in shear Stokes flow, focusing on bodies that induce rapid rotation as part of their activity. Here, in Part 1, we develop a multiscale framework to investigate these emergent dynamics and apply it to simple spheroidal objects. In Part 2 (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2301.11032" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2301.11032">arXiv:2301.11032</a>), we apply our framework to understand the emergent dynamics of more complex shapes; helicoidal objects with chirality. Via a multiple-scales asymptotic analysis for nonlinear systems, we systematically derive emergent equations of motion for long-term trajectories that explicitly account for the strong (leading-order) effects of fast spinning. Supported by numerical examples, we constructively link these effective dynamics to the well-known Jeffery's orbits for passive spheroids, deriving an explicit closed-form expression for the effective shape of the active particle, broadening the scope of Jeffery's seminal study to spinning spheroids.

Covariant Equations of Motion Beyond the Spin-Dipole Particle Approximation

Abstract:The present paper studies the post-Newtonian dynamics of N bodies in general relativity. We derive covariant equations of translational and rotational motion of N extended bodies having arbitrary distribution of mass and velocity of matter by employing the set of global and local coordinate charts on curved spacetime manifold of N-body system along with the mathematical apparatus of the Cartesian STF tensors and Blanchet-Damour multipole formalism. We separate the self-field effects of the bodies from the external gravitational environment and construct the effective background spacetime manifold by making use of the asymptotic matching technique. We make worldline of the center of mass of each body identical with that of the origin of the body-adapted local coordinates by the appropriate choice of the dipole moments. The covariant equations of motion are obtained by applying the Einstein principle of equivalence and the Fermi-Walker law of transportation of the linear momentum and spin of each body. Our approach significantly extends the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon covariant equations of motion beyond the spin-dipole particle approximation by accounting for the entire infinite set of the internal multipoles of the bodies which are gravitationally coupled with the curvature tensor of the background manifold and its covariant derivatives. The results of our study can be used for much more accurate prediction of orbital dynamics of extended bodies in inspiraling binary systems and construction of templates of gravitational waves at the merger stage when the strong gravitational interaction between the higher-order multipoles of the bodies play a dominant role. The covariant theory of the post-Newtonian equations of motion beyond the spin-dipole approximation is a solid foundation for future improvements in long-term accuracy of relativistic celestial ephemerides of the solar system bodies.

On the elastodynamics of rotating planets

Abstract:Equations of motion are derived for (visco)elastic, self-gravitating, and variably-rotating planets. The equations are written using a decomposition of the elastic motion that separates the body's elastic deformation from its net translational and rotational motion as far as possible. This separation is achieved by introducing degrees of freedom that represent the body's rigid motions; it is made precise by imposing constraints that are physically motivated and should be practically useful. In essence, a Tisserand frame is introduced exactly into the equations of solid mechanics. The necessary concepts are first introduced in the context of a solid body, motivated by symmetries and conservation laws, and the corresponding equations of motion are derived. Next, it is shown how those ideas and equations of motion can readily be extended to describe a layered fluid--solid body. A possibly new conservation law concerning inviscid fluids is then stated. Thereafter the equilibria and linearisation of the fluid--solid equations of motion are discussed, along with new equations for use within normal-mode coupling calculations and other Galerkin methods. Finally, the extension of these ideas to the description of multiple, interacting fluid--solid planets is qualitatively discussed.

Abstract:High-resolution spectroscopy of small molecules and radicals is associated with the interpretation of rotational-vibrational spectra, the theory of which is based on the study of the internal motions of a free system of particles and its rotation as a whole. In this paper, in addition to the differential geometry methods, a vector version of the transformation of the kinetic energy operator for a system of many particles is considered, in which the energy operator of the system rotation as a whole is expressed in terms of the square of the total angular momentum relative to the center of mass of the particle system. It is shown that the construction of a solution to the Schrödinger equation for atomic-molecular systems in the form of a multipolar harmonic product and an energy eigenfunction is consistent with the conclusion obtained by methods of differential geometry that the internal motions of multiparticle systems are realized under the condition of zero angular momentum and under the influence of effective centrifugal potentials, and additional gradient contributions corresponding to the rotational states of the total angular momentum that take place in the system of many particles also at zero value of the total angular momentum.

Abstract:Recently, several femtosecond laser techniques have been developed that are capable of bringing gas molecules to extremely fast rotation in a very short time, while keeping their translational motion intact and relatively slow. We investigate collisional equilibration dynamics of this new state of molecular gases, and find that it follows a remarkable generic scenario. The route to equilibrium starts with a durable metastable 'gyroscopic stage', in the course of which the molecules maintain their fast rotation and orientation of the angular momentum through many collisions. The inhibited rotational-translational relaxation is characterized by a persistent anisotropy in the molecular angular distribution, and is manifested in the long-lasting optical birefringence, and anisotropic diffusion in the gas. After a certain induction time, the 'gyroscopic stage' is abruptly terminated by a self-accelerating explosive rotational-translational energy exchange leading the gas towards the final thermal equilibrium. We illustrate our conclusions by direct Molecular Dynamics simulation of super-rotors in several gases consisting of common linear molecules (such as N_2, O_2 and CO_2).
