Abstract:Chiral structures are composed of periodically arranged asymmetric particles. The asymmetry of chiral particles results in extraordinary properties like negative refraction index, giant optical activity and circular dichroism. Consequently, they have applications in super lens and various polarization controllers. There are two types of chiral structures, namely planar and 3D structures. The planar ones usually have three-or fourfold rotational symmetry, which limits the polarization tuning capability. On the other hand, the 3D prototypes are difficult to fabricate and measure. Here, we propose a highly tunable sub-wavelength 3D chiral structure. It can be conveniently manufactured on the single-layer double-side printed circuit board. Based on the proposed idea, a sample converting a linearly polarized wave to a circularly polarized one is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally. The conversion efficiency is measured to be 60%.
Photonic Approach for Generating Bandwidth-Doubled and Switchable Multi-Format Chirp Waveforms.

Abstract:A novel photonic approach for generating switchable multi-format chirp RF waveforms is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The key component in the scheme is a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM). By properly setting the bias voltage on the DPMZM, different chirp RF waveforms with a doubled bandwidth, including the dual-, up-, and down-chirp waveforms, can be generated, when an unmodulated RF signal and a chirp RF signal are injected. The experiments are implemented to demonstrate the generation of switchable chirp waveforms with bandwidths of 2 and 0.8 GHz. The proposed scheme features its compact structure, easiness in switching control, as well as bandwidth doubling, which has potential applications in multifunctional radars.

Abstract:Axially excited chiral sculptured thin films (STFs) are shown to exhibit the circular Bragg phenomenon in the pre-resonant (long-wavelength) regime but not in some parts of the post-resonant (short-wavelength) regime. Chiral STFs act as very good polarization-independent reflectors in the vicinity of material resonances in the latter regime.

Abstract:When a circularly polarized plane wave is normally incident on a slab of a structurally chiral material with local $\bar{4}2m$ point group symmetry and a central twist defect, the slab can function as either a narrowband reflection hole filter for co-handed plane waves or an ultranarrowband transmission hole filter for cross-handed plane waves, depending on its thickness and the magnitude of the applied dc electric field. Exploitation of the Pockels effect significantly reduces the thickness of the slab.

Abstract:A method to increase the bandwidth of long-period waveguide gratings (LPWGs) is proposed using linearly tapered cladding profile and large coupling constant. Compared to conventional uniform LPWG, the simulated 20-dB bandwidth of the designed chirped LPWG is enlarged by 14 times, from 0.9nm to 12.8nm. Besides, a chirped LPWG with the new structure is also fabricated, and bandwidth broadening effect is observed.

Abstract:An ultra-broadband optical filter based on step-chirped multimode waveguide Bragg grating (SCMWBG) with low insertion loss, high sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR), compact size and relaxed fabrication accuracy is demonstrated on SOI platform. The grating length of SCMWBG is divided into grating segments with constant periods, and the period of each segment increases in a fixed step length of 1 nm. Each grating segment of the proposed SCMWBG is designed according to the phase-matching condition. The device is fabricated by a 193 nm DUV lithography, and employs complementary lateral-misalignment apodization to suppress the sidelobes. The measured insertion loss, SLSR and 3-dB bandwidth of fabricated SCMWBG are 1.2 dB, 17 dB and 72 nm, respectively.

Abstract:The periodic nanostructure of the cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) phase inherently exhibits a selective reflection. Polymerization of small concentrations of monomer can stabilize the cholesteric liquid crystal phase. Recent reports detail that in certain conditions, polymer stabilized networks retain structural chirality upon polymerization in CLC media. The retention of structural chirality allows the polymer stabilized network to effectively act as a through-the-thickness anchoring layer. The structural chirality retained in the polymer stabilizing network can be deformed via ion-mediated electromechanical coupling to enable dynamic control of the selective reflection via application of a DC field. Prior reports have nearly exclusively utilized photopolymerization of acrylate monomers to prepare homogenously distributed polymer stabilized network through the thickness of the CLC. Here, we detail that the electro-optic response, visualized here as reflection bandwidth broadening, can be enhanced by the copolymerization of acrylate and methacrylate liquid crystalline monomers. This report details systematic study of the contribution of monomer composition (copolymerization), cell thickness, and initiating intensity to the resulting electro-optic response of the PSCLC. The electrical regulation of reflection bandwidth is of potential interest to functional applications in the built environment, photonics, and consumer products.

Spectral Tuning of Polarization Selective Reflections Bands in GLAD deposited HfAlN chiral sculptured thin films

Abstract:We present the first report on fabrication of Hafnium aluminum nitride chiral sculptured thin films (CSTFs) using reactive magnetron sputtering in a glancing angle deposition configuration, and the analysis of its optical polarization properties. The resulting CSTFs were designed to give interference extrema or so-called circular Bragg (CB) resonances at desired wavelengths in the region from 370 to 690 nm. This was achieved by tailoring the growth of the chiral thin films to obtain a dielectric pitch between 87 and 260.9 nm. The spectral positions of the obtained CB resonances were compared to values from analytical expressions. Contrary to the common case where the dielectric pitch is half of the growth-related rotational pitch due to a 180° symmetry, this pitch was shown to be the same as the rotational pitch. It is concluded that this is due to the c-axis of the CSTF being tilted about 45° from the substrate normal. The morphology and crystallographic characterizations were done using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively, while the tilt of the crystal lattice was corroborated using X-ray diffraction pole figures. The optical response from the CSTFs was analyzed using Mueller matrix spectroscopic ellipsometry from which the degree of circular polarization at the CB resonances was obtained. In addition, a strong non-reciprocal reflection was observed which could be attributed to the helicoidal morphology and the intrinsic crystal tilt. An optical layered model of the chiral structure including azimuthal twist and using the Cauchy dispersion relations was used to simulate the Mueller matrix elements and compare with the ellipsometry measurements. The correlation between the simulated and experimental data gave information of the morphological parameters of the CSTF and its optical properties.

Abstract:Sculptured thin films (STFs) are engineered films having tailored morphology and high porosity. Henceforth, we can elicit desired optical responses upon light excitation in these films. The oblique deposition of the nanocolumns and the resulting anisotropic properties have been discovered over the past decade. Their discovery has lead to unique and predictable optical, mechanical, electrical, magnetic, thermal, and biological properties. To study the optical response of such STFs, we introduced a central defect in a perturbed chiral STF (CSTF), which transmits light of one circular polarization state and reflects the other in a spectral Bragg regime. The perturbed CSTF reflects light of both circular polarization states in the Bragg regime if the amplitude of modulation of vapor incident angle increases. A structurally chiral layer defect or either central twist defect in a perturbed matched CSTF fabricated a narrow bandpass (ultranarrow bandstop filter) and Bragg reflectors depending upon the thickness and periods of these nanostructures. However, both the ultranarrow bandstop filter and Bragg reflectors have become polarization insensitive by the appropriate modulation of the tilt nanohelixes of perturbed CSTFs. Moreover, simulation revealed that the polarization-insensitive Bragg mirrors, laser mirror, and Bragg reflector were fabricated using such CSTF structures having structural defect. These structural nanomaterials are very tolerant when the amplitude of modulation of vapor incident angle is sufficiently large. It has been also examined that different STFs structures of different refractive indices and porosity are fabricated by changing deposition angle and angle of inclination through modulation and glancing angle deposition.

Abstract:Releasing the dependence of the low-frequency and broad bandgaps on low stiffness and bulky masses has been an intractable bottleneck. Although inertial amplification is a terrific candidate for addressing the barrier, numerous extended ideas are limited to the classical models, thus, slowing or stalling the advances in this demand. To break this limit, we report a kind of planar chiral phononic crystal based on Thomson scattering. Different from the optimization effect produced in the locally resonant phononic crystals, the mirrored chirality can open a Thomson scattering-induced broad bandgap when the local resonant sub-structure is discarded. In addition, while simplifying the material components, we lower the starting frequency of the bandgap with a virtually unchanged width for the same lattice constant, stiffness and mass. Consequently, the starting frequency of the attenuation can be in the same order of magnitude as the local resonance bandgap, while the width is significantly better than the latter. Our proposal may open a new way to manipulate broadband elastic waves and validate that Thomson scattering is a promising alternative approach and mechanism for bandgap formation.

Abstract:The introduction of either a central layer defect or a central twist defect in a periodic structurally chiral material generates circular-polarization-sensitive spectral holes in the remittance spectrums for normally incident plane waves. We propose and theoretically establish here the third method to generate such spectral holes using two-section chiral sculptured thin films (STFs). Both sections of the proposed device have the same periodicity and handedness, but their dielectric properties are different and related in a specific way. The concept of pseudoisotropy is highly relevant for the production of the proposed device.

Enhancement of sound in chirped sonic crystals

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel mechanism of sound wave concentration based on soft reflections in chirped sonic crystals. The reported controlled field enhancement occurs at around particular (bright) planes in the crystal, and is related to a progressive slowing down of the sound wave as it propagates along the material. At these bright planes, a substantial concentration of the energy (with a local increase up to 20 times) was obtained for a linear chirp and for frequencies around the first band gap. A simple couple mode theory is proposed, that interprets and estimates the observed effects. The results are obtained for the case of sound waves and sonic crystals, however they are extendable to other type of waves in modulated host matter.

Abstract:The unique spectral behavior exhibited by a class of non-uniform Bragg periodic structures, namely chirped and apodized fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) influenced by parity and time reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, is presented. The interplay between the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and nonuniformities brings exceptional functionalities in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase such as wavelength selective amplification and single-mode lasing for a wide range of variations in gain-loss. We observe that the device is no more passive and it undergoes a series of transitions from asymmetric reflection to unidirectional invisibility and multi-mode amplification as a consequence of variation in the imaginary part of the strength of modulation in different apodization profiles, namely Gaussian and raised cosine, at the given value of chirping. The chirping affords bandwidth control as well as control over the magnitude of the reflected (transmitted) light. Likewise, apodization offers additional functionality in the form of suppression of uncontrolled lasing behavior in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime besides moderating the reflected signals outside the band edges of the spectra.

Abstract:Experimentation with obliquely incident light established that all four circular reflectances of a chiral sculptured thin film backed by a metallic mirror contain strong evidence of the circular Bragg phenomenon. When the mirror is removed, strong evidence of that phenomenon is found only in the spectrum of the copolarized and cohanded reflectance.

Abstract:A CO2 laser and point-by-point method are used for fabricating step-changed period chirped long-period fiber gratings (LPFG). Several types of period chirped LPFGs have been demonstrated, such as, linearly chirp, peak-shape chirp, and cascaded linearly chirp. Unlike uniform LPFGs, the spectrum change such as multiple attenuation peaks, broader spectrum can be seen in these chirp gratings, and the spectral shape can be controlled by the grating period. Especially, the cascaded linearly chirped LPFGs performs a multi-peak as interference between the core mode and cladding mode, which can be used as multi-wavelength filters in fiber optic communication and fiber optic sensors. Also, a linear tuning range of 1.6 nm with -0.559 pm/mu epsilon tuning rate is achieved in these types of devices by applying an axial strain. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We propose an efficient method for spatial filtering of light beams by propagating them through two-dimensional (also three dimensional) chirped photonic crystals, i.e., through the photonic structures with fixed transverse lattice period and with the longitudinal lattice period varying along the direction of the beam propagation. We prove the proposed idea by numerically solving the paraxial propagation equation in refraction-index–modulated media and we evaluate the efficiency of the process by harmonic-expansion analysis. The technique can be also applied for filtering (for cleaning) of the packages of atomic waves (Bose condensates), also to improve the directionality of acoustic and mechanical waves.

Abstract:Plasmonic enhancement of nonlinear light-matter interaction can be achieved via dedicated optimization of resonant plasmonic modes that are spectrally matched to the different wavelengths involved in the particular nonlinear optical process. In this work, we investigate the generation and enhancement of broadband four-wave mixing (FWM) in a plasmonic azimuthally chirped grating (ACG). The azimuthally varying grating periodicity in an ACG offers a well-defined channel to mediate the near field and the far field over a broad range of wavelengths. However, the particular mechanism responsible for field enhancement in such a platform depends on the interplay between the effects manifested by both the groove geometry and the grating's periodicity. This work delineates the collective contribution of groove geometry-dependent localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and periodicity-dependent plasmonic surface lattice resonance (PSLR) over a broad range of wavelengths to bring into effect the enhancement of broadband FWM in an ACG.

Abstract:Three dimensional chiral metamaterials, have unique helical shaped morphologies and periodically varying permittivity, possess inherent fascinatingly chiroptical activity in developing potential photonic applications. Herein, we demonstrate a systemic simulations of optical activity in chiral sculptured thin films (CSTFs) made of ZrO2. In particular, a circular dichroism (CD) and linear dichroism (LD) are scrutinized for the proposed ZrO2 CSTFs. From the calculated differential absorption, LD and CD spectrum is computed using linear and circular polarized light beams respectively. The signated mode of different peaks for LD and CD is observed at different sweep angles with a large LD effect. Moreover, the CD diminishes at large sweep angle. This finding strongly indicates high potential of our proposed helical ZrO2 nanostructures as a perfect polarization converter. Simultaneously, optical remittance of different helical nanostructures are also compared.
