Abstract:For a system consisting of a quantum emitter coupled near threshold (band edge) to a one-dimensional continuum with a van Hove singularity in the density of states, we demonstrate general conditions such that a characteristic triple-level convergence occurs directly on the threshold as the coupling g is shut off. For small g values the eigenvalue and norm of each of these states can be expanded in a Puiseux expansion in terms of powers of g2/3 , which suggests the influence of a third-order exceptional point. However, in the actual g→0 limit, only two discrete states in fact coalesce as the system can be reduced to a 2×2 Jordan block; the third state instead merges with the continuum. Moreover, the decay width of the resonance state involved in this convergence is significantly enhanced compared to the usual Fermi golden rule, which is consistent with the Purcell effect. However, non-Markovian dynamics due to the branch-point effect are also enhanced near the threshold. Applying a perturbative analysis in terms of the Puiseux expansion that takes into account the threshold influence, we show that the combination of these effects results in quantum emitter decay of the unusual form 1−Ct3/2 on the key timescale during which most of the decay occurs. We then present two conditions that must be satisfied at the threshold for the anomalous exceptional point to occur: the density of states must contain an inverse square-root divergence and the potential must be nonsingular. We further show that when the energy of the quantum emitter is detuned from threshold, the anomalous exceptional point splits into three ordinary exceptional points, two of which appear in the complex-extended parameter space. Renormalization of number density in nonequilibrium quantum-field theory and absence of pinch singularities

Abstract:Through introducing a notion of renormalization of particle-number density, a simple perturbation scheme of nonequilibrium quantum-field theory is proposed. In terms of the renormalized particle-distribution functions, which characterize the system, the structure of the scheme (and then also the structure of amplitudes and reaction rates) are the same as in the equilibrium thermal field theory. Then, as an obvious consequence, the amplitudes and reaction rates computed in this scheme are free from pinch singularities due to multiple products of $\delta$-functions, which inevitably present in traditional perturbation scheme.

Resonances at the Threshold for Pauli Operators in Dimension Two

Abstract:It is well-known that, due to the interaction between the spin and the magnetic field, the two-dimensional Pauli operator has an eigenvalue $0$ at the threshold of its essential spectrum. We show that when perturbed by an effectively positive perturbation, $V$, coupled with a small parameter $\varepsilon$, these eigenvalues become resonances. Moreover, we derive explicit expressions for the leading terms of their imaginary parts in the limit $\varepsilon\searrow 0$. These show, in particular, that the dependence of the imaginary part of the resonances on $\varepsilon$ is determined by the flux of the magnetic field. The cases of non-degenerate and degenerate zero eigenvalue are treated separately. We also discuss applications of our main results to particles with anomalous magnetic moments.

Abstract:Fermi surfaces can undergo sharp transitions under smooth changes of parameters. Such transitions can have a topological character, as is the case when a higher-order singularity, one that requires cubic or higher-order terms to describe the electronic dispersion near the singularity, develops at the transition. When time-reversal and inversion symmetries are present, odd singularities can only appear in pairs within the Brillouin zone. In this case, the combination of the enhanced density of states that accompanies these singularities and the nesting between the pairs of singularities leads to interaction-driven instabilities. We present examples of single n=3 (monkey-saddle) singularities when time-reversal and inversion symmetries are broken. We then turn to the question of what instabilities are possible when the singularities are isolated. For spinful electrons, we find that the inclusion of repulsive interactions destroys any isolated monkey-saddle singularity present in the noninteracting spectrum by developing Stoner or Lifshitz instabilities. In contrast, for spinless electrons and at the mean-field level, we show that an isolated monkey-saddle singularity can be stabilized in the presence of short-range repulsive interactions. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.107.205129 ©2023 American Physical Society

Abstract:We study the perturbation of the Schrödinger operator on the plane with a bounded potential of the form where is a real function and is a compactly supported function. It is assumed that the one-dimensional Schrödinger operator with the potential has two real isolated eigenvalues in the lower part of its spectrum, and the one-dimensional Schrödinger operator with the potential has a virtual level at the boundary of its essential spectrum, i.e., at , and a spectral singularity at the inner point of the essential spectrum . In addition, the eigenvalues and the spectral singularity overlap in the sense of the equality We show that a perturbation by an abstract localized operator leads to a bifurcation of the internal threshold into four spectral objects which are resonances and/or eigenvalues. These objects correspond to the poles of the local meromorphic continuations of the resolvent. The spectral singularity of the operator qualitatively changes the structure of these poles as compared to the previously studied case where no spectral singularity was present. This effect is examined in detail, and the asymptotic behavior of the emerging poles and corresponding spectral objects of the perturbed Schrödinger operator is described.

Abstract:Metastability is a quintessential feature of first order quantum phase transitions, which is lost either by dynamical instability or by nucleating bubbles of a true vacuum through quantum tunneling. By considering a drive across the first order quantum phase transition in the quantum Ising chain in the presence of both transverse and longitudinal fields, we reveal multiple regions in the parameter space where the initial metastable state loses its metastability in successive stages. The mechanism responsible is found to be semi-degenerate resonant tunnelings to states with specific bubble sizes. We show that such dynamics of quantized bubble nucleations can be understood in terms of Landau-Zener transitions, which provide quantitative predictions of nucleation probabilities for different bubble sizes.
Anomalous Thresholds for the S-matrix of Unstable Particles

Abstract:In this work, we study the analytic properties of S-matrix for unstable particles, which is defined as the residues on the unphysical sheets where unstable poles reside. We demonstrate that anomalous thresholds associated with UV physics are unavoidable for unstable particles. This is in contrast to stable particles, where the anomalous thresholds are due to IR physics, set by the scale of the external kinematics. As a result, any dispersive representation for the amplitude will involve contributions from these thresholds that are not computable from the IR theory, and thus invalidate the general positivity bound. Indeed using toy models, we explicitly demonstrate that the four-derivative couplings for unstable particles can become negative, violating positivity bounds even for non-gravitational theories. Along the way, we show that contributions from anomalous thresholds in a given channel can be captured by the double discontinuity of that channel.

Propagators and widths of physical and purely virtual particles in a finite interval of time

Abstract:We study the free and dressed propagators of physical and purely virtual particles in a finite interval of time $\tau $ and on a compact space manifold $\Omega $, using coherent states. In the free-field limit, the propagators are described by the entire function $(e^{z}-1-z)/z^{2}$, whose shape on the real axis is similar to the one of a Breit-Wigner function, with an effective width around $1/\tau $. The real part is positive, in agreement with unitarity, and remains so after including the radiative corrections, which shift the function into the physical half plane. We investigate the effects of the restriction to finite $\tau $ on the problem of unstable particles vs resonances, and show that the muon observation emerges from the right physical process, differently from what happens at $\tau =\infty $. We also study the case of purely virtual particles, and show that, if $\tau $ is small enough, there exists a situation where the geometric series of the self-energies is always convergent. The plots of the dressed propagators show testable differences: while physical particles are characterized by the usual, single peak, purely virtual particles are characterized by twin peaks.

Higher-Derivative Quantum Gravity with Purely Virtual Particles: Renormalizability and Unitarity

Abstract:We review the formulation of quantum field theories with purely virtual particles, a new type of degrees of freedom that can mediate interactions without ever appear as external on-shell states. This property allows to solve the problem of ghosts in higher-derivative quantum gravity, leading to a renormalizable and unitary theory. The main steps for the BRST quantization of gravity are recalled and renormalizability is discussed. Then, we introduce purely virtual particles in a general quantum field theory and show the derivation of the so-called spectral identities, which are a key ingredient to prove unitarity. Finally, phenomenological consequences and predictions in inflationary cosmology are presented.

Scaling Phenomena in a Unitary Model of Directed Propagating Waves with Applications to One-Dimensional Electrons in a Time-Varying Potential

Abstract:We study a 2D lattice model of forward-directed waves in which the integrated intensity for classical waves (or probability for quantum mechanical particles) is conserved. The model describes the time evolution of 1D quantum particle in a time-varying potential and also applies to propagation of electromagnetic waves in two dimensions within the parabolic approximation. We present a closed form solution for propagation in a uniform system. Motivated by recent studies of non-unitary directed models for localized 2D electrons tunneling in a magnetic field, we then address related theoretical questions of how the interference pattern between constrained-forward paths in this unitary model is affected by the addition of phases corresponding to such a magnetic field. The behavior is found to depend sensitively on the value of $\Phi/\Phi_{0}$, where $\Phi$ is flux per plaquette and $\Phi_{0}$ is the unit of flux quantum. For $\Phi/\Phi_{0} = p/q$ we find the amplitude to be more collimated the larger is the value of $q$. We next consider propagation in a random forward scattering media. In particular the scaling properties associated with the transverse width $x$ of the wave, as function of its distance $t$ from point source, are addressed. We find the moments of $x$ to scale with $t$ in a very different way from what is known for either off-lattice unitary or on-lattice non-unitary systems. The scaling of the moments of the probability $[P^{n}(x,t)]$ (or intensity) at a point $(x=0,t)$ is found to be consistent with a simple behavior $[P^{n}(0,t)] \sim t^{-\frac{n}{2}}$. Abstract:Quantum Field Theory is applied to study an electron plasma under an intense neutrino flux. The dispersion relation of the longitudinal waves is derived and the damping rate is calculated. It is shown that in the case of Supernova emission the neutrinos are not collimated enough to cause plasma instabilities associated to a strong neutrino resonance effect.

Abstract:Resumming quantum fluctuations at the level of the gravitational path integral is expected to result in non-local effective actions and thus in a non-trivial momentum dependence of the propagator. Which properties the (dressed) graviton propagator has to satisfy and whether they can all be met are key open questions. In this work we present criteria and conditions for the momentum dependence of a graviton propagator which is consistent with unitarity, causality, and stability in a non-perturbative setting. To this end, we revisit several aspects of these conditions, highlighting some caveats and subtleties that got lost in recent discussions, and spelling out others that to our best knowledge have not been studied in detail. We discuss the consequences of these concepts for the properties of the graviton propagator. Finally, we provide examples of propagators satisfying unitarity and causality, while avoiding tachyonic and vacuum instabilities, and allowing for an analytic Wick rotation.

Abstract:We present a novel treatment of resonant massive particles appearing as intermediate states in high energy collisions. The approach uses effective field theory methods to treat consistently the instability of the intermediate resonant state. As a result gauge invariance is respected in every step and calculations can in principle be extended to all orders in perturbation theory, the only practical limitation in going to higher orders being the standard difficulties related to multi-loop integrals. We believe that the longstanding problem related to the treatment of instability of particles is now solved.

Fall of a Particle to the Center of a Singular Potential: Classical vs. Quantum Exact Solutions

Abstract:Exact solutions describing a fall of a particle to the center of a non-regularized singular potential in classical and quantum cases are obtained and compared. We inspect the quantum problem with the help of the conventional Schrödinger's equation. During the fall, the wave function spatial localization area contracts into a single zero-dimensional point. For the fall-admitting potentials, the Hamiltonian is non-Hermitian. Because of that, the wave function norm occurs time-dependent. It demands an extension to this case of the continuity equation and rules for mean value calculations. Surprisingly, the quantum and classical solutions exhibit striking similarities. In particular, both are self-similar at the particle energy equals zero. The characteristic spatial scales of the quantum and classical self-similar solutions obey the same temporal dependence. We present arguments indicating that these self-similar solutions are attractors to a broader class of solutions, describing the fall at finite energy of the particle.

Abstract:A new method of preparing the pseudo-pure state of a spin system for quantum computation in liquid nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was put forward and demonstrated experimentally. Applying appropriately connected line-selective pulses simultaneously and a field gradient pulse techniques we acquired straightforwardly all pseudo-pure states for two qubits in a single experiment much efficiently. The signal intensity with the pseudo-pure state prepared in this way is the same as that of temporal averaging. Our method is suitable for the system with arbitrary numbers of qubits. As an example of application, a highly structured search algorithm----Hogg's algorithm was also performed on the pseudo-pure state $\mid 00>$ prepared by our method.

On the Occurrence of a Phase Transition in Atomic Systems

Abstract:We present a simple argument confirming the spontaneous quantum condensation of an electromagnetic field in matter in the case of a multi-level atomic system coupled to a single-mode electromagnetic field in the dipole approximation. The obtained result disproves the validity of a ``no-go theorem'' and fully rehabilitates theories of spontaneous quantum condensation of the electromagnetic field in matter. Peculiar features of the identified coherent states are outlined.

Abstract:We study the Euclidean effective action and the full fermion propagator for a Dirac field in the presence of a scalar field with a domain wall defect, in 2+1 dimensions. We include quantum effects due to both fermion and scalar field fluctuations, in a one-loop approximation. The results are interpreted in terms of the quantum stability of the zero mode solution. We also study, for this system, the induced `inertial' electric field for the fermions on the defect, due to the quantum fluctuations of the scalar field.

Quantum gravitational non-singular tunneling wavefunction proposal

Abstract:It was recently shown that tunneling wavefunction proposal is consistent with loop quantum geometry corrections including both holonomy and inverse scale factor corrections in the gravitational part of a spatially closed isotropic model with a positive cosmological constant. However, in presence of an inflationary potential the initial singularity is kinetic dominated and the effective minisuperspace potential again diverges at zero scale factor. Since the wavefunction in loop quantum cosmology cannot increase towards the zero scale factor, the tunneling wavefunction seems incompatible. We show that consistently including inverse scale factor modifications in scalar field Hamiltonian changes the effective potential into a barrier potential allowing the tunneling proposal. We also discuss a potential quantum instability of the cyclic universe resulting from tunneling.

Abstract:We introduce and solve the one-dimensional quantum non-linear Schrodinger (NLS) equation for an N-component field defined on the real line with a defect sitting at the origin. The quantum solution is constructed using the quantum inverse scattering method based on the concept of Reflection-Transmission (RT) algebras recently introduced. The symmetry of the model is generated by the reflection and transmission defect generators defining a defect subalgebra. We classify all the corresponding reflection and transmission matrices. This provides the possible boundary conditions obeyed by the canonical field and we compute these boundary conditions explicitly. Finally, we exhibit a phenomenon of spontaneous symmetry breaking induced by the defect and identify the unbroken generators as well as the exact remaining symmetry.

The Breakdown of Resummed Perturbation Theory at High Energies

Abstract:Calculations of high-energy processes involving the production of a large number of particles in weakly-coupled quantum field theories have previously signaled the need for novel non-perturbative behavior or even new physical phenomena. In some scenarios, already tree-level computations may enter the regime of large-order perturbation theory and therefore require a careful investigation. We demonstrate that in scalar quantum field theories with a unique global minimum, where suitably resummed perturbative expansions are expected to capture all relevant physical effects, perturbation theory may still suffer from severe shortcomings in the high-energy regime. As an example, we consider the computation of multiparticle threshold amplitudes of the form $1 \to n$ in $\varphi^6$ theory with a positive mass term, and show that they may violate unitarity of the quantum theory for large $n$, even after the resummation of all leading-$n$ quantum corrections. We further argue that this is a generic feature of scalar field theories with higher-order self-interactions beyond $\varphi^4$, thereby rendering the latter unique with respect to its high-energy behavior.
