Abstract:The baryon mass operator is studied within a combined expansion in $1/N_c$ and perturbative $SU(3)$ flavor symmetry breaking, where $N_c$ denotes the number of quark charges. Flavor projection operators are used to classify the baryon operators involved in the expansion, which fall into the flavor representations $1$, $8$, $10+\overline{10}$, $27$, $35+\overline{35}$ and $64$. This approach allows one to incorporate up to third-order flavor symmetry breaking in the baryon mass operator in a rigorous and systematic way. Previous work on the subject is considered to validate the approach. A fit to data is performed to evaluate the free parameters in the theory and to produce some numerical values of baryon masses. Results are consistent and reaffirm the striking success of the $1/N_c$ expansion.

Abstract:Predictions of unknown heavy baryon masses based on an expansion in $1/m_Q$, $1/N_c$ and $SU(3)$ breaking are updated to take into account a recent measurement of the $\Sigma_c^*$ mass. Values are given for the two remaining unknown charm baryon masses $\Xi_c^\prime$ and $\Omega_c^*$ and the seven unknown bottom baryon masses $\Xi_b, \Sigma_b, \Xi_b^\prime, \Omega_b, \Sigma_b^*, \Xi_b^*$ and $\Omega_b^*$.

Baryon-meson scattering amplitude in the $1/N_c$ expansion

Abstract:The baryon-meson scattering amplitude is computed within the $1/N_c$ expansion of QCD, where $N_c$ is the number of color charges. The most general expression is obtained by accounting for explicitly the effects of the decuplet-octet baryon mass difference and perturbative flavor $SU(3)$ symmetry breaking. Although the resultant expression is general enough that it can be applied to any incoming and outgoing baryons and mesons, provided that the Gell-Mann--Nishijima scheme is respected, results for $N\pi$ scattering processes are explicitly dealt with. With these, some isospin relations are verified to be valid at the physical value $N_c=3$. The expressions obtained here represent a first effort toward understanding scattering processes in the context of the $1/N_c$ expansion.

Abstract:We present the 1/M relativistic B-S expansion formalism for heavy mesons, explain its relation to HQET and give further simplified formulas. Abstract:We study the hierarchy of the coefficients in the 1/Nc expansion for the negative parity L=1 excited baryons from the perspective of the constituent quark model. This is related to the problem of determining the spin-flavor structure of the quark interaction. The most general two-body scalar interaction between quarks contains the spin-flavor structures $t_1^a t_2^a, \vec s_1\cdot \vec s_2$ and $ \vec s_1\cdot \vec s_2 t_1^a t_2^a$. We show that in the limit of a zero range interaction all these structures are matched onto the same hadronic mass operator $S_c^2$, which gives a possible explanation for the dominance of this operator in the 1/Nc expansion for the L=1 states and implies that in this limit it is impossible to distinguish between these different spin-flavor structures. Modeling a finite range interaction through the exchange of a vector and pseudoscalar meson, we propose a test for the spin-flavor dependence of the quark forces. For the scalar part of the quark interaction we find that both pion exchange and gluon exchange are compatible with data.

Abstract:Treating the strange quark mass as a heavy scale compared to the light quark mass, we perform a matching of the nucleon mass in the SU(3) sector to the two-flavor case in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. The validity of the 19 low-energy constants appearing in the octet baryon masses up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order [1] is supported by comparing the effective parameters (the combinations of the 19 couplings) with the corresponding low-energy constants in the SU(2) sector [2]. In addition, it is shown that the dependence of the effective parameters and the pion-nucleon sigma term on the strange quark mass is relatively weak around its physical value, thus providing support to the assumption made in Ref. [2] that the SU(2) baryon chiral perturbation theory can be applied to study nf=2+1 lattice QCD simulations as long as the strange quark mass is close to its physical value.

Abstract:We review the current status and present open challenges of large $N_c$ QCD baryon spectroscopy. After introducing the $1/N_c$ expansion method we first shortly revisit the latest achievements for the ground state properties. Next we discuss the applicability of this method to excited states, presenting two different approaches with their advantages and disadvantages. Selected results for the spectrum and strong and electromagnetic decays are described. We also show further developments supported by the qualitative compatibility between the quark excitation picture and the meson-nucleon scattering picture. We give a quantitative comparison between results obtained from the mass formula of the $1/N_c$ expansion method and quark models and shortly discuss the implications of different large $N_c$ limits.
Exact large $N$ expansion of mass deformed ABJM theory on squashed sphere

Abstract:In this paper we study the partition function of the mass deformed ABJM theory on a squashed three sphere. In particular, we focus on the case with the Chern-Simons levels being $\pm 1$ and apply a duality between this theory and the $\mathcal{N}=4$ $\mathrm{U}\left(N\right)$ super Yang-Mills theory with an adjoint hypermultiplet and a fundamental hypermultiplet. For a special mass parameter depending on the squashing parameter, we find that the partition function can be written as that of an ideal Fermi gas with a non-trivial density matrix. By studying this density matrix, we analytically derive the all order perturbative expansion of the partition function in $1/N$, which turns out to take the form of the Airy function. Our results not only align with previous findings and conjectures but also lead to a new formula for the overall constant factor of the partition function. We also study the exact values of the partition function for small but finite values of $N$.

Baryon masses estimate in heavy flavor QCD

Abstract:We apply the renormalization group procedure for effective particles (RGPEP) to the QCD eigenvalue problem for only heavy quarks. We derive the effective Hamiltonian that acts on the Fock space by solving the RGPEP equation up to second order in powers of the coupling constant. The eigenstates that contain three quarks and two or more gluons are eliminated by inserting a gluon-mass term in the component with one gluon and formulate the eigenvalue problem for baryons. We estimate masses for $bbb$ and $ccc$ states and find that the results match the estimates obtained in lattice QCD and in quark models.

Abstract:Baryons with one or more heavy quarks have been shown, in the context of a nonrelativistic description, to exhibit mass inequalities under permutations of their quarks, when spin averages are taken. These inequalities sometimes are invalidated when spin-dependent forces are taken into account. A notable instance is the inequality $2E(Mmm) > E(MMm) + E(mmm)$, where $m = m_u = m_d$, satisfied for $M = m_b$ or $M = m_c$ but not for $M = m_s$, unless care is taken to remove effects of spin-spin interactions. Thus in the quark-level analog of nuclear fusion, the reactions $\Lambda_b \Lambda_b \to \Xi_{bb}N$ and $\Lambda_c \Lambda_c \to \Xi_{cc}^{++}n$ are exothermic, releasing respectively 138 and 12 MeV, while $\Lambda \Lambda \to \Xi N$ is endothermic, requiring an input of between 23 and 29 MeV. Here we explore such mass inequalities in the context of an approach, previously shown to predict masses successfully, in which contributions consist of additive constituent-quark masses, spin-spin interactions, and additional binding terms for pairs each member of which is at least as heavy as a strange quark.

Abstract:Using a confining, symmetry-preserving regularization of a vector x vector contact interaction, we compute the spectra of ground-state pseudoscalar and vector of (f (g) over bar) mesons, scalar and axial-vector (fg) diquarks, and J(P) = 1/2(+), 3/2(+) (fgh) baryons, where f, g, h is an element of {u, d, s, c, b}. The diquark correlations are essentially dynamical and play a key role in formulating and solving the three-valence-quark baryon problems. The baryon spectrum obtained from this largely algebraic approach reproduces the 22 known experimental masses with an accuracy of 2.9(2.4)%. It also possesses the richness of states typical of constituent-quark models, predicting many heavy-quark baryons not yet observed. This study indicates that diquark correlations are an important component of all baryons; and owing to the dynamical character of the diquarks, it is typically the lightest allowed diquark correlation that defines the most important component of a baryon's Faddeev amplitude.

Abstract:The mass formulas and decay constants of electrically charged and strange pseudoscalar mesons are analyzed within the combined framework of Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio model and the $1/N_c$ expansion up to $\mathcal O(1/N_c^2)$. The light quark masses explicitly violating $SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$ chiral symmetry of the strong interactions are taken to be of order $\mathcal O(1/N_c)$. The Fock-Schwinger proper-time method and the Volterra series are used to derive the effective action. A set of sum rules is obtained that relates the phenomenological values of the masses of pseudoscalar mesons to the mass ratios of light quarks. It is shown that combining the new sum rules with the experimental data on the decay width $\eta\to 3\pi$ allows to establish limits for the ratios: $0.47<m_u/m_d<0.59$ and $18.60<m_s/m_d<19.66$. A comparison with the results of similar calculations in $1/N_c$ chiral perturbation theory is made.

Mass hierarchies in gauge theory with two index symmetric representation matter

Abstract:In gauge theories, the running of the anomalous dimension of a fermion bilinear operator is believed to lead to chiral symmetry breaking when gamma=1. Naively using perturbative results to judge when gamma=1 leads to the possibility of large dynamically generated mass hierarchies in models with both two index symmetric representation and fundamental representation fermions. In this paper we study a holographic model of this physics to predict the separation in scales in the meson spectrum. We study SU(Nc) theories at different Nc with one flavour of two index symmetric representation as a function of the number of fundamental fermion flavours NfF. The largest hierarchy we find is for Nc=7 and NfF=22 where the rho mesons made of the two different representations are separated in scale by a factor of 13. For general Nc the hierarchy can be made greater than 7 by tuning NfF. We display the hierarchy as a function of NfF and investigate the quark mass dependence. These predictions do depend on the extrapolation of gamma from the perturbative regime - even in a pessimistic scenario a distinct gap can be achieved.

Abstract:We continue to study the properties of the light pseudoscalar nonet within the combined framework of Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio model and $1/N_c$ expansion, assuming that current quark masses count of order $\mathcal O(1/N_c)$. The masses, mixing angles and decay constants of the $\pi^0$, $\eta$ and $\eta'$ are calculated. The role of the $U(1)_A$ anomaly is emphasized. It is shown that the gluon anomaly suppresses the leading order effects that might otherwise be substantial for the $\eta\to 3\pi$ amplitude. A detailed comparison with the known results of $1/N_c$ chiral perturbation theory is made.

Abstract:We present lattice results for the spectrum of mesons containing one heavy quark and of baryons containing one or two heavy quarks. The calculation is done in the quenched approximation using the NRQCD formalism for the heavy quark. We analyze the dependence of the mass splittings on both the heavy and the light quark masses. Meson P-state fine structure and baryon hyperfine splittings are resolved for the first time. We fix the b quark mass using both M_B and M_{\Lambda_b}, and our best estimate is m_b^\MSbar(m_b^\MSbar) = 4.35(10)({}^{-3}_{+2})(10) GeV. The spectrum, obtained by interpolation to m_b, is compared with the experimental data.

Abstract:The combined large N_c and heavy quark limit for baryons containing a single heavy quark is discussed. The combined large N_c and heavy quark expansion of the heavy quark bilinear operators is obtained. In the combined expansion the corrections proportional to m_N/m_Q are summed to all orders. In particular, the combined expansion can be used to determine semileptonic form factors of heavy baryons in the combined limit.
Low-lying baryon masses using twisted mass fermions ensembles at the physical pion mass

Abstract:We investigate the low-lying baryon spectrum using three $N_f$=2+1+1 ensembles simulated with physical values of the quark masses and lattice spacings of 0.080, 0.069, and 0.057 fm. The ensembles are generated using twisted mass clover-improved fermions and the Iwasaki gauge action. The spatial length is kept approximately the same at about 5.1 fm to 5.5 fm fulfilling the condition $m_\pi L$> 3.6. We investigate isospin splitting within isospin multiples and verify that for most cases the isospin splitting for these lattice spacing is consistent with zero. In the couple of cases, for which there is a non-zero value, in the continuum limit, the mass splitting goes to zero. The baryon masses are extrapolated to the continuum limit using the three $N_f$=2+1+1 ensembles and are compared to other recent lattice QCD results. For the strange and charm quark masses, we find, respectively, $m_s$(2 GeV)=99.2(2.7) MeV and $m_c$(3 GeV)=1.015(39) GeV. The values predicted for the masses of the doubly charmed $\Xi_{cc}^\star$, $\Omega_{cc}$ and $\Omega_{cc}^\star$ baryons are 3.676(55) GeV, 3.703(51) GeV and 3.803(50) GeV, respectively, and for the triply charmed $\Omega_{ccc}$ baryon is 4.785(71) GeV.

Abstract:We present preliminary results for B-physics from a combination of non-perturbative results in the static limit with relativistic computations satisfying $am_{\mathrm{heavy}}\ll 1$. Relativistic measurements are carried out at the physical b-quark mass using the Schrödinger Functional in a $0.5 \ \mathrm{fm}$ box. They are connected to large volume observables through step scaling functions that trace the mass dependence between the physical charm region and the static limit, such that B-physics results can be obtained by interpolation; the procedure is designed to exactly cancel the troublesome $\alpha_s(m_{\mathrm{heavy}})^{n+\gamma}$ corrections to large mass scaling. Large volume computations for both static and relativistic quantities use CLS $N_f=2+1$ ensembles at $m_u=m_d=m_s$, and with five values of the lattice spacing down to $0.039$ fm. Our preliminary results for the b-quark mass and leptonic decay constants have competitive uncertainties, which are furthermore dominated by statistics, allowing for substantial future improvement. Here we focus on numerical results, while the underlying strategy is discussed in a companion contribution.

Massive Meson Fluctuation in NJL Model

Abstract:Based on the self-consistent scheme beyond mean-field approximation in the large $N_c$ expansion, including current quark mass explicitly, a general scheme of SU(2) NJL model is developed. To ensure the quark self-energy expanded in the proper order of $N_c$, an approximate internal meson propagator is deduced, which is in order of $O(1/N_c)$. In our scheme, adopting the method of external momentum expansion, all the Feynman diagrams are calculated in a unified way by only expanding the quark propagator. Our numerical results show, that different from the mean field approximation in which the explicitly chiral symmetry breaking is invisible, the effect of finite pion mass can be seen clearly when beyond mean-field approximation.
