Abstract:The assumption of local equilibrium in relativistic heavy ion collisions at energies from 10.7 AGeV (AGS) up to 160 AGeV (SPS) is checked in the microscopic transport model. Dynamical calculations performed for a central cell in the reaction are compared to the predictions of the thermal statistical model. We find that kinetic, thermal and chemical equilibration of the expanding hadronic matter are nearly approached late in central collisions at AGS energy for $t \geq 10$ fm/$c$ in a central cell. At these times the equation of state may be approximated by a simple dependence $P \cong (0.12-0.15) \epsilon$. Increasing deviations of the yields and the energy spectra of hadrons from statistical model values are observed for increasing energy, 40 AGeV and 160 AGeV. These violations of local equilibrium indicate that a fully equilibrated state is not reached, not even in the central cell of heavy ion collisions at energies above 10 AGeV. The origin of these findings is traced to the multiparticle decays of strings and many-body decays of resonances.

Abstract:The hypothesis of local equilibrium (LE) in relativistic heavy ion collisions at energies from AGS to RHIC is checked in the microscopic transport model. The entropy density in the cell is only about 6% smaller than that of the equilibrium state.

Abstract:Fluctuations of the baryon number in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are a promising observable to explore the structure of the QCD phase diagram. The cumulant ratios in heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies ($\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} < 7$ GeV) have not been studied to date. We investigate the effects of mean field potential and clustering on the cumulant ratios of baryon and proton number distributions in Au+Au collisions at beam energy of 1.23 GeV$/$nucleon as measured by the HADES Collaboration at GSI. Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) and the JAM model are used to calculate the cumulants with different mean field potentials. It is found that the cumulant ratios are strongly time dependent. At the early stage, the effects of the potentials on the fluctuations of the particle multiplicity in momentum space are relatively weak. The mean fields enhance the fluctuations during the expansion stage, especially for small rapidity acceptance windows. The enhancement of cumulant ratios for free protons is strongly suppressed as compared to that for all baryons. The mean field potentials and the clustering play an important role for the measured cumulant ratios at intermediate energy.

Abstract:Local density fluctuations near the QCD critical point has been suggested to exhibit a power-law behavior which can be probed by an intermittency analysis on scaled factorial moment (SFM) in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The collision energy and centrality dependence of the second-order SFMs are systematically investigated in Au+Au collisions at sNN=7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, and 200 GeV within the urqmd model. We estimate the noncritical background in the measurement of intermittency and propose a cumulative variable method to effectively remove the background contributions. We further study the effect of particle detection efficiency by implementing the RHIC (STAR) experimental tracking efficiencies in the urqmd events. A cell-by-cell method is proposed for experimental application of efficiency corrections on SFM. This work can provide a guidance of background subtraction and efficiency correction for the experimental measurement of intermittency in the search of the QCD critical point in heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:We present an analysis of hadronic multiplicities measured in Pb-Pb collisions at \sqrt s_{NN} = 2.76 TeV as a function of the collision centrality within the statistical hadronization model. Evidence is found of a dependence of the chemical freeze-out temperature as a function of centrality, with a slow rise from central to peripheral collisions, which we interpret as an effect of post-hadronization inelastic scatterings. Using correction factors calculated by means of a simulation based on the UrQMD model, we are able to obtain a significant improvement in the statitical model fit quality and to reconstruct the primordial chemical equilibrium configuration. This is characterized by a nearly constant temperature of about 164 MeV which we interpret as the actual hadronization temperature.
Analysis of particle production in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions within a two-source statistical model

Abstract:The experimental data on hadron yields and ratios in central lead-lead and gold-gold collisions at 158 AGeV/$c$ (SPS) and $\sqrt{s} = 130$ AGeV (RHIC), respectively, are analysed within a two-source statistical model of an ideal hadron gas. A comparison with the standard thermal model is given. The two sources, which can reach the chemical and thermal equilibrium separately and may have different temperatures, particle and strangeness densities, and other thermodynamic characteristics, represent the expanding system of colliding heavy ions, where the hot central fireball is embedded in a larger but cooler fireball. The volume of the central source increases with rising bombarding energy. Results of the two-source model fit to RHIC experimental data at midrapidity coincide with the results of the one-source thermal model fit, indicating the formation of an extended fireball, which is three times larger than the corresponding core at SPS.

Abstract:We calculate open heavy-flavor (HF) production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$=62.4 GeV utilizing a nonperturbative transport approach as previously applied in nuclear collisions at top RHIC and LHC energies. The effects of hot QCD matter are treated in a strong-coupling framework, by implementing heavy-quark diffusion, hadronization and heavy-flavor meson diffusion within a hydrodynamic background evolution. Since in our approach the heavy-flavor coupling to the medium is strongest in the pseudo-critical region, it is of interest to test its consequences at lower collision energies where the sensitivity to this region should be enhanced relative to the hotter (early) fireball temperatures reached at top RHIC and LHC energies. We find that the suppression and flow pattern of the non-photonic electrons from heavy-flavor decays at 62.4 GeV emerges from an intricate interplay of thermalization and initial-state effects, in particular a Cronin enhancement which is known to become more pronounced toward lower collision energies.

Abstract:Within the relativistic mean-field framework with hadron masses and coupling constants dependent on the mean scalar field we study properties of nuclear matter at finite temperatures, baryon densities and isospin asymmetries relevant for heavy-ion collisions at laboratory energies below 2$A$ GeV. Previously constructed (KVORcut-based and MKVOR-based) models for the description of the cold hadron matter, which differ mainly by the density dependence of the nucleon effective mass and symmetry energy, are extended for finite temperatures. The baryon equation of state, which includes nucleons and $\Delta$ resonances is supplemented by the contribution of the pion gas described either by the vacuum dispersion relation or with taking into account the $s$-wave pion-baryon interaction. Distribution of the charge between components is found. Thermodynamical characteristics on $T-n$ plane are considered. The energy-density and entropy-density isotherms are constructed and a dynamical trajectory of the hadron system formed in heavy-ion collisions is described. The effects of taking into account the $\Delta$ isobars and the $s$-wave pion-nucleon interaction on pion differential cross sections, pion to proton and $\pi^-/\pi^+$ ratios are studied. The liquid-gas first-order phase transition is studied within the same models in isospin-symmetric and asymmetric systems. We demonstrate that our models yield thermodynamic characteristics of the phase transition compatible with available experimental results. In addition, we discuss the scaled variance of baryon and electric charge in the phase transition region. Effect of the non-zero surface tension on spatial redistribution of the electric charge is considered for a possible application to heavy-ion collisions at low energies.

Model dependence of the number of participant nucleons and observable consequences in heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:The centrality determination and the estimated fluctuations of number of participant nucleons $N_{part}$ in Au-Au collisions at 1.23 $A$GeV beam kinetic energy suffers from severe model dependencies. Comparing the Glauber Monte Carlo (MC) and UrQMD transport models, it is shown that $N_{part}$ is a strongly model dependant quantity. In addition, for any given centrality class, Glauber MC and UrQMD predicts drastically different $N_{part}$ distributions. The impact parameter $b$ and the number of charged particles $N_{ch}$ on the other hand are much more correlated and give an almost model independent centrality estimator. It is suggested that the total baryon number balance, from integrated rapidity distributions, can be used instead of $N_{part}$ in experiments. Preliminary HADES data show significant differences to both, UrQMD simulations and STAR data in this respect.

Abstract:We report the latest results on the search for the QCD critical point in the QCD phase diagram through high energy heavy-ion collisions. The measurements discussed are based on the higher moments of the net-proton multiplicity distributions in heavy-ion collisions. A non-monotonic variation in the product of kurtosis times the variance of the net-proton distribution is observed as a function of the collision energy with 3$\sigma$ significance. We also discuss the results of the thermal model in explaining the measured particle yield ratios in heavy-ion collisions and comparison of the different variants of hardon resonance gas model calculation to the data on higher moments of net-proton distributions. We end with a note that the upcoming programs in high baryon density regime at various experimental facilities will complete the search for the QCD critical point through heavy-ion collisions.
Thermodynamics of partonic matter in relativistic heavy-ion collisions from a multiphase transport model

Abstract:Using the string melting version of a multiphase transport model, we focus on the evolution of thermodynamic properties of the central cell of parton matter produced in Au+Au collisions ranging from 200 GeV down to 2.7 GeV. The temperature and chemical potentials have been calculated based on both Boltzmann and quantum statistics in order to locate their evolution trajectories in the QCD phase diagram. We demonstrate that the trajectories can depend on many physical factors, especially the finite nuclear thickness at lower energies. However, from the evolution of pressure anisotropy, only partial thermalization can be achieved when the partonic systems reach the predicted QCD phase boundary. It provides some helpful insights to studying the QCD phase structure through relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Noncritical Fluctuations of (net) Charges and (net) Protons from the Iebe-Vishnu Hybrid Model

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the noncritical fluctuations of (net) charges and (net) protons in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 7.7, 39, and 200 GeV, using iEBE-VISHNU hybrid model with Poisson fluctuations added in the particle event generator between hydrodynamics and UrQMD. Various effects, such as volume fluctuations hadronic evolution and scatterings, resonance decays, as well as realistic centrality cuts and acceptance cuts have been embedded in our model calculations. With properly tuned parameters, iEBE-VISHNU roughly describes the centrality-dependent moments and cumulants of (net) charges and (net) protons measured in experiment. Further comparison simulations show that the volume fluctuation is the dominant factor to influence the multiplicity fluctuations, which makes the higher moments of (net) charges largely deviate from the Poisson baselines. We also find that the effects from hadronic evolutions and resonance decays are rather small or even negligible for the multiplicity fluctuations of both (net) charges and (net) protons.
Neutron matter from local chiral EFT interactions at large cutoffs

Abstract:Neutron matter is an important many-body system that provides valuable constraints for the equation of state (EOS) of neutron stars. Neutron-matter calculations employing chiral effective field theory (EFT) interactions have been extensively used for this purpose. Among the various many-body methods, quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods stand out due to their nonperturbative nature and the achievable precision. However, QMC methods require local interactions as input, which leads to the appearance of stronger regulator artifacts as compared to non-local interactions. To circumvent this, we employ large-cutoff interactions derived within chiral EFT (400 MeV $\leq \Lambda_c \leq$ 700 MeV) for studies of pure neutron matter. These interactions have been adjusted to nucleon-nucleon scattering phase shifts, the triton binding energy, as well as the triton beta-decay half life. We find that regulator artifacts significantly decrease with increasing cutoff, leading to a significant reduction of uncertainties in the neutron-matter EOS. We discuss implications for the symmetry energy and demonstrate how our new calculations lead to a reduction in the theoretical uncertainty of predicted neutron-star radii by up to 30% for low-mass stars.

Light Nuclei Production in Au+Au Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 3 GeV within Thermodynamical Approach: Bulk Properties and Collective Flow

Abstract:We present results of simulations of light-nuclei production in Au+Au collisions at collision energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 3 GeV within updated Three-fluid Hydrodynamics-based Event Simulator Extended by UrQMD (Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics) final State interactions (THESEUS). The results are compared with recent STAR data. The light-nuclei production is treated within the thermodynamical approach on equal basis with hadrons. The only additional parameter related to the light nuclei is the energy density of late freeze-out that imitates afterburner stage of the collision because the light nuclei do not participate in the UrQMD evolution. It is found that the late freeze-out is preferable for deuterons, tritons, and $^3$He. Remarkably, the $^4$He observables are better reproduced with the standard freeze-out. This suggests that the $^4$He nuclei better survive in the afterburner stage because they are more spatially compact and tightly bound objects. This is an argument in favor of dynamical treatment of light nuclei. The simulations indicate that the collision dynamics is determined by the hadronic phase. The calculated results reveal not perfect but a good reproduction of the data on bulk observables and directed flow. The elliptic flow turns out to be more intricate.

Abstract:Semiclassical transport simulation of nucleus-nucleus collisions for the range of incident energy from about the Fermi energy up to a few hundred MeV per nucleon evidences that the maximal excitation energy put into a nuclear system during the early compact stage of heavy-ion reaction is a constant fraction of the center-of-mass available energy of the system. Analysis of experimental data without presuming reaction mechanism dominating the collision process on the best corroborates the found constancy of energy partition in central heavy-ion reactions.

Abstract:The nuclear equation of state (EOS) is at the center of numerous theoretical and experimental efforts in nuclear physics. With advances in microscopic theories for nuclear interactions, the availability of experiments probing nuclear matter under conditions not reached before, endeavors to develop sophisticated and reliable transport simulations to interpret these experiments, and the advent of multi-messenger astronomy, the next decade will bring new opportunities for determining the nuclear matter EOS, elucidating its dependence on density, temperature, and isospin asymmetry. Among controlled terrestrial experiments, collisions of heavy nuclei at intermediate beam energies (from a few tens of MeV/nucleon to about 25 GeV/nucleon in the fixed-target frame) probe the widest ranges of baryon density and temperature, enabling studies of nuclear matter from a few tenths to about 5 times the nuclear saturation density and for temperatures from a few to well above a hundred MeV, respectively. Collisions of neutron-rich isotopes further bring the opportunity to probe effects due to the isospin asymmetry. However, capitalizing on the enormous scientific effort aimed at uncovering the dense nuclear matter EOS, both at RHIC and at FRIB as well as at other international facilities, depends on the continued development of state-of-the-art hadronic transport simulations. This white paper highlights the essential role that heavy-ion collision experiments and hadronic transport simulations play in understanding strong interactions in dense nuclear matter, with an emphasis on how these efforts can be used together with microscopic approaches and neutron star studies to uncover the nuclear EOS.

Confronting fluctuations of conserved charges in central nuclear collisions at the LHC with predictions from Lattice QCD

Abstract:We construct net baryon number and strangeness susceptibilities as well as correlations between electric charge, strangeness and baryon number from experimental data on the particle production yields at midrapidity of the ALICE Collaboration at CERN. The data were taken in central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$~=~2.76~TeV and cover one unit of rapidity. We show that the resulting fluctuations and correlations are consistent with Lattice QCD results at the chiral crossover pseudocritical temperature $T_{c} \simeq$ 155 MeV. This agreement lends strong support to the assumption that the fireball created in these collisions is of thermal origin and exhibits characteristic properties expected in QCD at the transition from the quark gluon plasma to the hadronic phase. Since Lattice QCD calculations are performed at a baryochemical potential of $\mu_{B}$ = 0, the comparisons with LHC data are the most direct due to the vanishing baryon transport to midrapidity at these high energies.

Heavy meson tomography of cold nuclear matter at the electron-ion collider

Abstract:An important part of the physics program at the future electron-ion collider is to understand the nature of hadronization and the transport of energy and matter in large nuclei. Open heavy flavor production in deep inelastic scattering provides a new tool to address these critical questions. We present the first calculation of D-mesons and B-meson cross sections in electron-nucleus collisions at the EIC by including both next-to-leading order QCD corrections and cold nuclear matter effects. Our formalism employs generalized DGLAP evolution to include the contribution of in-medium parton showers, and is based on methods developed in soft-collinear effective theory with Glauber gluons that describe inclusive hadron production in reactions with nucleons and nuclei. The comprehensive study summarized here allows us to identify the optimal observables, center-of-mass energies, and kinematic regions most sensitive to the physics of energy loss and hadronization at the EIC.

Abstract:Background: Specific viscosity, defined as the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, was found as a probe of phase transition. It was observed that the specific viscosity reaches a local minimum at the critical point for both macroscopic and microscopic systems. In addition, a universal lower boundary was predicted by the AdS/CFT theory. In intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions, the studies on the relationship of specific viscosity and nuclear liquid-gas phase transition are still rare. Purpose: This paper gives a brief review for our calculations of the specific viscosity of nuclear fireball created in head-on Au+Au collisions in intermediate energy, for the study of liquid-gas phase transition. Besides, the influences of nucleon-nucleon cross section and symmetry energy on the specific viscosity are also addressed. Methods: The hot Thomas-Fermi formalism is employed to extract the thermal properties of the nuclear matter which is located in the central region of the collision. Two different methods, the Green-Kubo and Danielewicz's parameterized formula, are used to evaluate the shear viscosity. Finally the correlation between specific viscosity and temperature or collision energy is presented. Results: In both cases, a local minimum of specific viscosity which has the value of around 10 times of the lower bound is found at certain temperature or beam energy. It is clearly shown that the calculated results are not sensitive to the symmetry energy but strongly influenced by the nucleon-nucleon cross section. Conclusion: Our calculations demonstrate that a local minimum of specific viscosity can be taken as a probe of nuclear liquid-gas phase transition which takes place at around 10 MeV. Furthermore, the lower bound of specific viscosity is still valid for nuclear liquid-gas phase transition.
Light-nuclei production in collisions at GeV within a thermodynamical approach: Bulk properties and collective flow

Abstract:We present results of simulations of light-nuclei production in Au+Au collisions at a collision energy of sNN=3 GeV within the updated Three-fluid Hydrodynamics-based Event Simulator Extended by UrQMD (ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics) final State interactions (THESEUS). The results are compared with recent STAR data. The light-nuclei production is treated within the thermodynamical approach on an equal basis with hadrons. The only additional parameter related to the light nuclei is the energy density of late freeze-out that imitates the afterburner stage of the collision because the light nuclei do not participate in the UrQMD evolution. It is found that the late freeze-out is preferable for deuterons, tritons, and He3 . Remarkably, the He4 observables are better reproduced with the standard freeze-out. This suggests that the He4 nuclei better survive in the afterburner stage because they are more spatially compact and tightly bound objects. This is an argument in favor of dynamical treatment of light nuclei. The simulations indicate that the collision dynamics is determined by the hadronic phase. The calculated results reveal a not perfect, but good reproduction of the data on bulk observables and directed flow.
