Abstract:Consider the complete flag variety $X$ of any complex semi-simple algebraic group $G$. We show that the structure coefficients of the Belkale-Kumar product $\odot_0$, on the cohomology ${\operatorname H}^{*}(X,\mathbb{Z})$, are all either $0$ or $1$. We also derive some consequences. The proof contains a geometric part and uses a combinatorial result on root systems. The geometric method is uniform whereas the combinatorial one is proved by reduction to small ranks and then, by direct checkings.

K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of line degrees on flag varieties

Abstract:A homology class $d \in H_2(X)$ of a complex flag variety $X = G/P$ is called a line degree if the moduli space $\overline{M}_{0,0}(X,d)$ of 0-pointed stable maps to $X$ of degree $d$ is also a flag variety $G/P'$. We prove a quantum equals classical formula stating that any $n$-pointed (equivariant, K-theoretic, genus zero) Gromov-Witten invariant of line degree on $X$ is equal to a classical intersection number computed on the flag variety $G/P'$. We also prove an $n$-pointed analogue of the Peterson comparison formula stating that these invariants coincide with Gromov-Witten invariants of the variety of complete flags $G/B$. Our formulas make it straightforward to compute the big quantum K-theory ring of $X$ modulo degrees larger than line degrees.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate homogeneous Riemannian geometry on real flag manifolds of the split real form of $\mathfrak{g}_2$. We characterize the metrics that are invariant under the action of a maximal compact subgroup of $G_2.$ Our exploration encompasses the analysis of g.o. metrics and equigeodesics on the $\mathfrak{g}_2$-type flag manifolds. Additionally, we explore the Ricci flow for the case where the isotropy representation has no equivalent summands, employing techniques from the qualitative theory of dynamical systems.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be either i) the absolute Galois group of a local field $F$, or ii) the topological fundamental group of a closed connected orientable surface of genus $g$. In case i), assume that $\mu_{p^2} \subset F$. We give an elementary and unified proof that every representation $\rho_1: \Gamma \to \mathbf{GL}_d(\mathbb{F}_p)$ lifts to a representation $\rho_2: \Gamma \to \mathbf{GL}_d(\mathbb{Z}/p^2)$. [In case i), it is understood these are continuous.] The actual statement is much stronger: for $r \geq 1$, under "suitable" assumptions, triangular representations $\rho_r: \Gamma \to \mathbf{B}_d(\mathbb{Z}/p^r)$ lift to $\rho_{r+1}: \Gamma \to \mathbf{B}_d(\mathbb{Z}/p^{r+1})$, in the strongest possible step-by-step sense. Here "suitable" is made precise by the concept of $\textit{Kummer flag}$. An essential aspect of this work, is to identify the common properties of groups i) and ii), that suffice to ensure the existence of such lifts.

Abstract:We prove the Harder-Siegel formula for the Euler characteristic of $\mathcal{A}_g$ via the intersection theory of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_g$ and a vanishing result for lambda classes on the boundary of the toroidal compactifications of $\mathcal{A}_g$, recently proven by Canning, Molcho, Oprea and Pandharipande.

Abstract:This note is concerned with the unipotent characters of the Ree groups of type G_2. We determine the roots of unity associated by Lusztig and Digne-Michel to unipotent characters of ^2G_2(3^{2n+1}) and we prove that the Fourier matrix of ^2G_2(3^{2n+1}) defined by Geck and Malle satisfies a conjecture of Digne-Michel. Our main tool is the Shintani descent of Ree groups of type G_2.

Abstract:Consider a connected reductive algebraic group G and a symmetric subgroup K. Let X = K / B K × G / P be a double flag variety of finite type, where B K is a Borel subgroup of K, and P a parabolic subgroup of G. A general argument shows that the orbit space C X / K inherits a natural action of the Hecke algebra H = H ( K , B K ) of double cosets via convolutions. However, it is a quite different problem to find out the explicit structure of the Hecke module. In this paper, for the double flag variety of type AIII, we determine the explicit action of H on C X / K in a combinatorial way using graphs. As a by-product, we also get the description of the representation of the Weyl group on C X / K as a direct sum of induced representations.

Abstract:Due to the orbifold singularities, the intersection numbers on the moduli space of curves $\bar{\sM}_{g,n}$ are in general rational numbers rather than integers. We study the properties of the denominators of these intersection numbers and their relationship with the orders of automorphism groups of stable curves. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber. We also present a conjectural multinomial type numerical property for Hodge integrals.

Overview on the theory of double flag varieties for symmetric pairs

Abstract:Let $ G $ be a connected reductive algebraic group and its symmetric subgroup $ K $. The variety $ \dblFV = K/Q \times G/P $ is called a double flag variety, where $ Q $ and $ P $ are parabolic subgroups of $ K $ and $ G $ respectively. In this article, we make a survey on the theory of double flag varieties for a symmetric pair $ (G, K) $ and report entirely new results and theorems on this theory. Most important topic is the finiteness of $ K $-orbits on $ \dblFV $. We summarize the classification of $ \dblFV $ of finite type, which are scattered in the literatures. In some respects such classifications are complete, and in some cases not. In particular, we get a classification of double flag varieties of finite type when a symmetric pair is of type AIII, using the theorems of Homma who describes ``indecomposable'' objects of such double flag varieties. Together with these classifications, newly developed embedding theory provides double flag varieties of finite type, which are new. Other ingredients in this article are Steinberg theory, generalization of Robinson-Schensted correspondence, and orbit classification via quiver representations. We hope this article is useful for those who want to study the theory of double flag varieties.

A flag version of Beilinson-Drinfeld Grassmannian for surfaces

Abstract:In this paper we define and study a generalization of the Belinson-Drinfeld Grassmannian to the case where the curve is replaced by a smooth projective surface $X$, and the trivialization data are given on loci suitably associated to a nonlinear flag of closed subschemes. In order to do this, we first establish some general formal gluing results for moduli of almost perfect complexes, perfect complexes and torsors. We then construct a simplicial object $Fl_X$ of flags of closed subschemes of a smooth projective surface $X$, naturally associated to the operation of taking union of flags. We prove that this simplicial object has the 2-Segal property. For an affine complex algebraic group $G$, we finally define a derived, flag analog $Gr_X$ of the Beilinson-Drinfeld Grassmannian of $G$-bundles on the surface $X$, and show that most of the properties of the Beilinson-Drinfeld Grassmannian for curves can be extended to our flag generalization. In particular, we prove a factorization formula, the existence of a canonical flat connection, and define a chiral product on suitable sheaves on $Fl_X$ and on $Gr_X$. We also sketch the construction of actions of flags analogs of the loop group and of the positive loop group on $Gr_X$. To fixed ``large'' flags on $X$, we associate ``exotic'' derived structures on the classical stack of $G$-bundles on $X$. Analogs of the flag Grassmannian for other Perf-local stacks (replacing the stack of $G$-bundles) are briefly considered, and flag factorization is proved for them, too.

Abstract:The intersection numbers of moduli spaces of stable curves $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,m}$ are well-studied and are known to have rich combinatorial structure. We introduce a natural class of these intersection numbers $\omega_{G,g,m}$ indexed by finite simple graphs $G=(V,E)$. In genus zero, these numbers are closely related to several previously-studied quantities, including maximum likelihood degrees in algebraic statistics, counts of regions of certain hyperplane arrangements, and Kapranov degrees. We give two proofs of a simple closed formula $\omega_{G,g,m}=(-1)^{\left\lvert V \right\rvert}\chi_G(-(2g-2+m)),$ where $\chi_G$ is the chromatic polynomial of $G$ -- one proof via intersection theory on moduli spaces of stable curves, and the other using the theory of hyperplane arrangements. We discuss several related questions and speculations, including new candidates for the chromatic polynomial of a directed graph.

Abstract:In this paper we reduce the problem of counting the number of connected components in the intersection of two opposite open Schubert cells in the variety of real complete flags to a purely combinatorial question of counting the number of orbits of a certain intriguing group action in the space of upper triangular matrices with {0,1}-valued entries. The crucial step of our reduction uses the parametrization of the space of real unipotent totally positive upper triangular matrices introduced by Lusztig and Berenstein, Fomin, Zelevinski.

The dual complex of a $G$-variety

Abstract:We introduce a new invariant of $G$-varieties, the dual complex, which roughly measures how divisors in the complement of the free locus intersect. We show that the top homology group of this complex is an equivariant birational invariant of $G$-varieties. As an application, we demonstrate the non-linearizability of certain large abelian group actions on smooth hypersurfaces in projective space of any dimension and degree at least $3$.

Abstract:Generating functions for the number of commuting m-tuples in the symmetric groups are obtained. We define a natural sequence of ``orbifold Euler characteristics'' for a finite group G acting on a manifold X. Our definition generalizes the ordinary Euler characteristic of X/G and the string-theoretic orbifold Euler characteristic. Our formulae for commuting m-tuples underlie formulas that generalize the results of Macdonald and Hirzebruch-Hofer concerning the ordinary and string-theoretic Euler characteristics of symmetric products.

A Note On the Orbits of a Symmetric Subgroup in the Flag Variety

Abstract:Motivated by relating the representation theory of the split real and $p$-adic forms of a connected reductive algebraic group $G$, we describe a subset of $2^r$ orbits on the complex flag variety for a certain symmetric subgroup. (Here $r$ is the semisimple rank of $G$.) This set of orbits has the property that, while the closure of individual orbits are generally singular, they are always smooth along other orbits in the set. This, in turn, implies consequences for the representation theory of the split real group.

Codimension one intersections between components of the Emerton-Gee stack for $\mathrm{GL}_2$

Abstract:Let $p$ be a fixed odd prime, and let $K$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$. The Emerton-Gee stack for $\mathrm{GL}_2$ is a stack of $(\varphi, \Gamma)$-modules. The stack, denoted $\mathcal{X}_2$, can be interpreted as a moduli stack of representations of the absolute Galois group of $K$ with $p$-adic coefficients. The reduced part of the Emerton-Gee stack, denoted $\mathcal{X}_{2, \text{red}}$, is an algebraic stack defined over a finite field of characteristic $p$ and can be viewed as a moduli stack of Galois representations with mod $p$ coefficients. The irreducible components of $\mathcal{X}_{2, \text{red}}$ are labelled in a natural way by Serre weights, which are the irreducible mod $p$ representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathcal{O}_K)$. Each irreducible component of $\mathcal{X}_{2, \text{red}}$ has dimension $[K:\mathbb{Q}_p]$. Motivated by the conjectural categorical $p$-adic Langlands programme, we find representation-theoretic criteria for codimension one intersections of the irreducible components of $\mathcal{X}_{2, \text{red}}$. The methods involve two separate computations and a final comparison between the two. The first of these computations determines extension groups of Serre weights and the second determines all the pairs of irreducible components that intersect in codimension one. We show that a non-trivial extension of a pair of non-isomorphic Serre weights implies a codimension one intersection of the corresponding irreducible components. The converse of this statement is also true when the Serre weights are chosen to be sufficiently generic. Furthermore, we show that the number of top-dimensional components in a codimension one intersection is related to the nature of the extension group of corresponding Serre weights.

Abstract:Let G be a reductive algebraic group in classical types A, B, D and e be an element of its Lie algebra with Z its centraliser in G for the adjoint action. We suppose that e identifies with an nilpotent matrix of order two, which guarantees the number of Z-orbits in the flag variety of G is finite. For types B, D in characteristic two, we also suppose the image of e is totally isotropic. We show that any closure Y of such orbit is normal. We also prove that Y is Cohen-Macaulay with rational singularities provided that the base field is of characteristic zero, and that Cohen-Macaulayness remains in any characteristic for type A. We exhibit a birational, rational morphism onto Y involving Schubert varieties. Our work generalizes a result by N. Perrin and E. Smirnov on Springer fibers ([PS12]).
