Abstract:We propose a method to generate massive entanglement in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate from an initial product state through an adiabatic sweep of the magnetic field across a quantum phase transition induced by competition between the spin-dependent collision interaction and the quadratic Zeeman effect. The generated many-body entanglement is characterized by the experimentally measurable entanglement depth in the proximity of the Dicke state. We show that the scheme is robust to practical noise and experimental imperfection and under realistic conditions it is possible to generate genuine entanglement for hundreds of atoms.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to store the spin-nematic squeezing in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate by applying periodic microwave pulses. For a proper pulse period and phase shift, the squeezing can be enhanced and maintained for a long time, which realizes the storage of the maximal squeezing. We also propose a method to generate the spin-nematic squeezed vacuum, which is associated with negligible occupation of the squeezed modes, through an adiabatic sweep of the magnetic field. It is shown that the method can be readily implemented for both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic condensates.

Abstract:We discuss a proposal for the efficient generation of the maximally entangled atomic N-GHZ state in a spinor-1 condensate by driving internal state atomic Raman transitions using (classical) laser fields. We illustrate the dynamics in terms of a quantum Zeno subspace, and identify the resultant atomic elastic collision in facilitating the deterministic entanglement creation. Our proposal can be readily implemented in several laboratories where ferromagnetic spinor condensates (of ^87Rb atoms) are investigated.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to generate and detect various kinds of quantum entanglement in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. It is shown that substantial many-particle entanglement can be generated directly in the spin-1 condensate by free dynamical evolution with a properly prepared initial state. The scheme also provides a simple method to generate three-mode entanglement in the second-quantization picture and to detect the continuous variable type of entanglement between two effective modes in the spin-1 condensate.

Abstract:Considering the unique energy level structure of the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian in combination with standard rotations, we propose the implementation of a rapid adiabatic passage scheme on the Dicke state basis. The method permits to drive Dicke states of the many-atom system into entangled states with maximum quantum Fisher information. The designed states allow to overcome the classical limit of phase sensitivity in quantum metrology and sensing. We show how to generate superpositions of Dicke states, which maximize metrological gain for a Ramsey interferometric measurement. The proposed scheme is remarkably robust to variations of the driving field and has favorable time scaling, especially for small to moderate (~ 1000) number of atoms, where the total time does not depend on the number of atoms.

Abstract:Collisions in a thermal gas are perceived as random or incoherent as a consequence of the large numbers of initial and final quantum states accessible to the system. In a quantum gas, for example, a Bose–Einstein condensate or a degenerate Fermi gas, the phase space accessible to low-energy collisions is so restricted that collisions become coherent and reversible. Here, we report the observation of coherent spin-changing collisions in a gas of spin-1 bosons. Starting with condensates occupying two spin states, a condensate in the third spin state is coherently and reversibly created by atomic collisions. The observed dynamics are analogous to Josephson oscillations in weakly connected superconductors and represent a type of matter–wave four-wave mixing. The spin-dependent scattering length is determined from these oscillations to be −1.45(32) bohr. Finally, we demonstrate coherent control of the evolution of the system by applying differential phase shifts to the spin states using magnetic fields.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for generating many-atom maximal entanglement states in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. By applying a far-off-resonate blue-detuned linear-polarized laser to the condensates, the hyperfine level F = 1, m = 0 ground state and the hyperfine F = 0 excited state are conveniently coupled. Such a configuration is more efficient and provides a fast implementation of the maximally entangled GHZ state, using only half of the time that is required in single-atom Raman-transition-based schemes [You, Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 030402 (2003)].

Abstract:We propose protocols for the creation of useful entangled states in a system of spins collectively coupled to a bosonic mode, directly applicable to trapped- ion and cavity QED setups. The protocols use coherent manipulations of the resonant spin-boson interactions naturally arising in these systems to prepare spin squeezed states exponentially fast in time. The resonance condition harnesses the full spin-boson coupling and thus avoids the slower timescales when operating in the off-resonance regime. We demonstrate the robustness of the protocols by analyzing the effects of natural sources of decoherence in these systems and show their advantage compared to more standard slower approaches where entanglement is generated with off-resonant spin-boson interactions.

Abstract:The preparation of arbitrary N-particle Dicke states in a one-dimensional N-qubit chain with nearest-neighbor XXZ interaction is investigated. We show by perturbation approach that each of the N + 1 Dicke states can be approximately created as the nondegenerate ground state of the system when suitable external magnetic field and inter-qubit coupling are applied. In some small N situations, the perturbative results agree very well with the exact solutions. We further demonstrate by numerical methods that the proposed ground-state preparation of the Dicke states is robust against the finite temperature in the N = 4 case. We also discuss the feasibility of our scheme in several physical systems including semiconductor quantum dots and an optical lattice.

Abstract:We present a theoretical investigation on the enhancement of the spin coherence with periodic, concatenated, or Uhrig dynamical decoupling $N$-pulse sequences in a $^{87}$Rb spin-1 Bose condensate, where the intrinsic dynamical instability in such a ferromagnetically interacting condensate causes spin decoherence and eventually leads to a multiple spatial-domain structure or a spin texture. Our results show that all the three sequences successfully enhance the spin coherence by pushing the wave vector of the most unstable mode in the condensate to a larger value. Among the three sequences with the same number of pulses, the concatenated one shows the best performance in preserving the spin coherence. Interestingly, we find that all the three sequences exactly follow the same enhancement law, $k_- T^{1/2} = c$, with $k_-$ the wave vector of the most unstable mode, $T$ the sequence period, and $c$ a sequence-dependent constant. Such a law between $k_-$ and $T$ is also derived analytically for an attractive scalar Bose condensate subjecting to a periodic dynamical decoupling sequence.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of $su(2)$ spin-$s$ Dicke states, which are higher-spin generalizations of usual (spin-1/2) Dicke states. These multi-qudit states can be expressed as superpositions of $su(2s+1)$ qudit Dicke states. They satisfy a recursion formula, which we use to formulate an efficient quantum circuit for their preparation, whose size scales as $sk(2sn-k)$, where $n$ is the number of qudits and $k$ is the number of times the total spin-lowering operator is applied to the highest-weight state. The algorithm is deterministic and does not require ancillary qudits.

Abstract:We propose schemes for generating spatially-separated spin entanglement in systems of two quantum dots with onsite Coulomb repulsion weakly coupled to a joint electron reservoir. An enhanced probability for the formation of spin entanglement is found in nonequilibrium situations with one extra electron on each dot, either in the transient state after rapid changes of the gate voltage, or in the steady state with applied bias voltage. In both cases so-called Werner states with spin singlet fidelity exceeding 1/2 are generated, which indicates entanglement.

Abstract:We propose an experimentally accessible procedure for conditional preparation of highly non-classical states of collective spin of an atomic ensemble. The quantum state engineering is based on a combination of QND interaction between atoms and light previously prepared in a non-Gaussian state using photon subtraction from squeezed vacuum beam, homodyne detection on the output light beam, and a coherent displacement of atomic state. The procedure is capable of non-deterministic preparation of a wide class of superpositions of atomic Dicke states. We present several techniques to optimize the performance of the protocol and maximize the trade-off between fidelity of prepared state and success probability of the scheme.
Entangling two Dicke states in a periodic modulated quantum system

Abstract:We propose a theoretical approach for entangling two Dicke states in a periodic modulated quantum system. By considering two qubit ensembles that are nonuniformly coupled to a common resonator, we can derive an effective Hamiltonian whose energy levels depend nonlinearly on the excitation number of each qubit ensemble. More simplified effective Hamiltonian can be obtained by selecting appropriate driving parameters and initial state. Based on the dynamic evolution of the effective Hamiltonian, we can selectively achieve Dicke state transitions and generate entangled Dicke states controllably. For a special case, we can obtain ensemble-ensemble entangled states by performing a projective even-odd cat measurement. By implementing Gaussian soft temporal modulation, we can effectively suppress off-resonant contributions in the interaction and enhance the fidelity of target states. Furthermore, by utilizing the Holstein-Primakoff transformation, we study the resonator-ensemble coupling system in the thermodynamic limit and investigate the generation of entangled magnon states. Additionally, we propose a scheme of creating magnon NOON states through frequency modulation and study the influence of decoherence on the fidelity of target states.

Deterministic preparation of Dicke states of donor nuclear spins in silicon by cooperative pumping

Abstract:For donor nuclear spins in silicon, we show how to deterministically prepare various symmetric and asymmetric Dicke states which span a complete basis of the many-body Hilbert space. The state preparation is realized by cooperative pumping of nuclear spins by coupled donor electrons, and the required controls are in situ to the prototype Kane proposal for quantum computation. This scheme only requires a sub-gigahertz donor exchange coupling which can be readily achieved without atomically precise donor placement, hence it offers a practical way to prepare multipartite entanglement of spins in silicon with current technology. All desired Dicke states appear as the steady state under various pumping scenarios and therefore the preparation is robust and does not require accurate temporal controls. Numerical simulations with realistic parameters show that Dicke states of 10-20 qubits can be prepared with high fidelity in presence of decoherence and unwanted dynamics.

Entanglement generation via single-qubit rotations in a torn Hilbert space

Abstract:We propose an efficient yet simple protocol to generate arbitrary symmetric entangled states with only global single-qubit rotations in a torn Hilbert space. The system is based on spin-1/2 qubits in a resonator such as atoms in an optical cavity or superconducting qubits coupled to a main bus. By sending light or microwave into the resonator, it induces AC Stark shifts on particular angular-momentum eigenstates (Dicke states) of qubits. Then we are able to generate barriers that hinder transitions between adjacent Dicke states and tear the original Hilbert space into pieces. Therefore, a simple global single-qubit rotation becomes highly non-trivial, and thus generates entanglement among the many-body system. By optimal control of energy shifts on Dicke states, we are able to generate arbitrary symmetric entangled states. We also exemplify that we can create varieties of useful states with near-unity fidelities in only one or very few steps, including W states, spin-squeezed states (SSS), and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states. Particularly, the SSS can be created by only one step with a squeezing parameter $\xi_R^2\sim1/N^{0.843}$ approaching the Heisenberg limit (HL). Our finding establishes a way for universal entanglement generations with only single-qubit drivings where all the multiple-qubit controls are integrated into simply switching on/off microwave. It has direct applications in the variational quantum optimizer which is available with existing technology.

From spin squeezing to fast state discrimination

Abstract:There is great interest in generating and controlling entanglement in Bose-Einstein condensates and similar ensembles for use in quantum computation, simulation, and sensing. One class of entangled states useful for enhanced metrology are spin-squeezed states of $N$ two-level atoms. After preparing a spin coherent state of width $1/\sqrt{N}$ centered at coordinates $( \theta, \phi) $ on the Bloch sphere, atomic interactions generate a nonlinear evolution that shears the state's probability density, stretching it to an ellipse and causing squeezing in a direction perpendicular to the major axis. Here we consider the same setup but in the $N \rightarrow \infty $ limit . This shrinks the initial coherent state to zero area. Large $N$ also suppresses two-particle entanglement and squeezing, as required by a monogamy bound. The torsion (1-axis twist) is still present, however, and the center of the large $N$ coherent state evolves as a qubit governed by a two-state Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The resulting nonlinearity is known to be a powerful resource in quantum computation. It can be used to implement single-input quantum state discrimination, an impossibility within linear one-particle quantum mechanics. We obtain a solution to the discrimination problem in terms of a Viviani curve on the Bloch sphere. We also consider an open-system variant containing both Bloch sphere torsion and dissipation. In this case it should be possible to generate two basins of attraction within the Bloch ball, having a shared boundary that can be used for a type of autonomous state discrimination. We explore these and other connections between spin squeezing in the large $N$ limit and nonlinear quantum gates, and argue that a two-component condensate is a promising platform for realizing a nonlinear qubit.

Abstract:Recently, strong spin-orbit coupling with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus strength has been realized in neutral atomic Bose-Einstein condensates via a pair of Raman lasers. In this report, we investigate spin and field squeezing of the ground state in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate. By mapping the spin-orbit coupled BEC to the well-known quantum Dicke model, the Dicke type quantum phase transition is presented with the order parameters quantified by the spin polarization and occupation number of harmonic trap mode. This Dicke type quantum phase transition may be captured by the spin and field squeezing arising from the spin-orbit coupling. We further consider the effect of a finite detuning on the ground state and show the spin polarization and the quasi-momentum exhibit a step jump at zero detuning. Meanwhile, we also find that the presence of the detuning enhances the occupation number of harmonic trap mode, while it suppresses the spin and the field squeezing.
